I've never understood the people who try to do a skyrim vs dragon age rpg war. It's apples and oranges. Both are fantasy rpgs, but the similarities end there. Skyrim has a main storyline, but the main allure is the open world setting and the freedom to literally do whatever you want. I love Skyrim and the elder scroll games in general, but the weakness (my opinion) is that your companion characters aren't really fleshed out and don't truly feel like real people. Dragon Age has a linear storyline that you *have* to follow to finish the game. People used to the open world of ES games might not like that, but they're two different kind of games. Yes the plot is your generic fantasy 'become the hero, fight the forces of evil and save the world', but that's the main storyline plot of Skyrim too. The positives of Dragon Age is the companion characters; the voice acting and writing in the game are excellent...and you actually can see your companion characters as real people that you care about. While Skyrim has some good voice acting (especially for some of the unique npcs), their over-use of them (how many npcs and townspeople have the exact same voice?) is immersion-breaking for me. In DA I never feel like a merchant I'm talking to is just a clone of another one with an identical voice. Also, like the name says, DA gives you options on what history you want your character to have. In Skyrim you only have one beginning...with your only initial choice being your gender and race. And in origins your choices have a real impact on the world. If you choose to leave a village under attack by undead, that village is slaughtered. Act like an evil bastard, then your more moral party members will abandon you. People complain about the relationships in DA...but to me that's a draw; it's an RPG...Role Playing Game. By making your warden you're choosing a role in a story to play. And to me, romance is a part of that. Yeah you can get married in Skyrim, but your pool of potential spouses is so limited and generic it's almost an afterthought. That said though, I like both Skyrim and Dragon Age and appreciate both for what they do.
Well said, but I honestly can't go back to the elder scrolls series after playing Origins. I used to love the elder scrolls game (still do) but they just feel too shallow and less mature in a way compared to Origins. Origins really has a soul and everything feels very important, with far superior writing, voice acting, characters and even gameplay as I love the tactical combat in Origins. In Origins I wanted to read all the lore and codices because it was so interesting whereas in the elder scrolls games I rarely had the courage to read any of it's lore books tbh. Also the fact that you can do anything whenever you want used to be appealing, but it is so standard these days it could hardly be considered anything impressive anymore.
dragon age :origins is the game that made me play and fall in love with the rpg genere, but sykrim is simply the best game ever made. While in DA:O i was interested to see how my choices would play out in the story of the game, in skyrim i couldn't be arsed to even tackle the main storyline until the news that story dlc would hit and i was like already 400 hours in of just horseing around as the most powerful being alive.
Dragon age origins is one of those few games that after ten years it still holds up pretty well. Yeah the combat isn't amazing but conversations are still so engaging
put hundreds of hours in on the 360 version, just bought the PC version to go back and replay it. to anyone worrying about the console versions don't. it's amazing anyway you play it but the PC version is by far the best way to play it. if only for the tactical mode & better textures. but that doesn't make or break the game at all. anyways play it anyway you can! one of the if not the best RPG's of all time.
Are you referring to all versions or Consoles version. I want to know so I can decide wether to get it for my ps3 or wait and get it for pc. My pc is bust atm so I'm leaning for PS3 but it might change.
@parkerman23 I'm playing the PC version, and yeah it has that also, but it will highlight the item with a yellow boarder until you look at, so unless you never check your inventory when you get new items, it doesn't seem that big of a problem. (Although I agree, if it would tell you what you got, that'd make things easier.)
one of a very Good and inspiring Review iv'e ever watched.. the review is fully detailed, from minor issues to major issues that he can explain why and when! and mr. Van Ord gives this game an inspiring message that can loose your self in a fantasy world.. that simple but I do really like this review! keep it up Mr. Kevin Van Ord
wait, so you have to manually manage and level up each person in your party? like, swapping armour around and distributing earned points when one of them levels up??
hey guys i was wondering, i am a warrior and im in shield and defense(which sucks) and i want to switch to two handed, is there anyway that i can clear all of my attacks and put all of those points that i get back from clearing my attacks(that i have now) and spend that on the two handed area. if you know how too, please tell me, thanks.
i had to uninstall this game 18 months ago because i played a ridiculous amount of hours within the first 3 weeks. i've just reinstalled it let's hope i have better self-control ;)
I've been playing these games backwards. Played inquisition and fell in love so bought DA 2 and couldn't even get through an hour of it but then one day I was like I'll just try it again and now I'm in love. I played like 2 seconds of origins and can't even handle the graphics :( but maybe I'll love it after I get more involved in the story.
See I made that same mistake also. By first Elder Scrolls game was Skyrim. So I thot what the he'll And bought Oblivian......there was no way I could handle the graphics of Oblivian after playing Skyrim. If it was 2006 again maybe but you know what I mean.
While I don't think the game is bad, I'm glad it was free on Origin. Compared to Neverwinter Nights, DA:O has a less interesting story, is very dumbed-down, and isn't as fun. What I really don't like is there's very little you can do to actually defeat an opponent that is more powerful than you. Unless you're a mage, characters just simply don't have a lot of effective attack or defense abilities. I've often found myself exhausting all resources I had against a group of enemies and failing miserably, where the only way to beat them is to attract small groups at a time or to spend 5 minutes getting everyone in your group positioned properly. I just find that annoying and uninteresting. NWN was just as strategic except you could defeat far more powerful things without any assistance. I also think there's too much dialog about insignificant things. I couldn't care less about some elf's ritual to earn a girlfriend, but you kinda have to ask him about it if you want to get a mission.
It's arguably one of the most overrated games of recent times. I never quite understood the hype about it's combat, which is in fact it's weakest point. KotOR was much better. NWN was superior, even when I did not quite liked the art style as much. As an RPG, it had much better combat. The focus of Dragon Age on 'relationship' stuff makes no sense to me whatsoever, it comes across as robots dating each other, there's no realism there.
It's "very dumbed-down" but you keep "failing miserably"? then maybe it's not that died down now is it? I've defeated enemies that are a higher level than me and I'm a warrior, not a mage. The combat is old school and if YOU don't understand it, doesn't mean it's bad, God this generation of gamers are so entitled.
LAKings4TheCup difficulty and complexity are not the same thing... The problem is the game is simplified so much that if something is too challenging, there is *nothing* you can do about it. I'm used to playing RPGs and regularly play them on harder difficulties. The first time I faced a *small* dragon in DA:O, it killed me and my entire group in less than 6 attacks. At best, I managed to damage it 20%. I had to look up a guide online on how to avoid it, which apparently was only achievable because of a design flaw in the game. If I wasn't supposed to encounter the dragon so soon, why did the game allow me to get that far so easily? The combat is NOT old school. NWN is more old school and even that isn't perfect. I've played games since DOS 4.0, so you can shove you "this generation of gamers are so entitled" up your ass.
***** I ended up stopping but only because A.I ruined the immersion of the game by being completely clueless. May feel good while you roam to your location but in combat it's like playing battleships with trucks.
thing is...the AI is as good as you make it. You can dictate what it does at every possible scenario. If you leave it to the game to make the decisions on how to level and act in battle...then ya...the ai sucks...but if you take full control of it...its as good as you want to make it. Also...the ending is some of the best parts of the game. The large scale battle....the last huge decisions that not only affect how the ending evolves but things further down the line in DA2 and 3. Im playing again now to get ready for DAI....my only problem was deciding on an origin/sex/race combo i felt made for the best story/ending....lol
Shadownian Well it's more that if my team is left alone they just run into the weapons of the enemy. I feel that if left alone AI could be better at taking care of themselves.
Tweeaak Tweek yeah, the slow combat is a bit of an annoyance.. but in regards to the AI... you can customize what it does in the tactics. When to use what ability or spells, when to melee, when to go ranged, and so on. And that way it performs great. But trust me, the game is worth playing and finishing and then replaying(unlike it's successor)..
for pc: the gameplay is realtime and you controle yourself and your team with the mouse and the shortcuts ; but you can hold on the gameplay, give commands and go on... and you can give every of your teammates exact orders for their reactions in fight, like: when under 50 hp...take a potion i dont know if the system has great changes on xbox360 and ps3
you can play it on a laptop as long as your laptop meets the minimum specs (though it might run slowly if you only just meet the specs) - also your laptop will probably get pretty hot running the game
I recently got Dragon Age Origins for the PC and to all RPG fans, you NEED this game. After I bought it I found myself staying up to 6AM playing it because I couldnt stop and finally finished my FIRST playthrough with about 50 hours on it alone. It may seem a bit startling at first being throw into a world you arnt familiar with, but the Codex system helps alot to teach you. Buy it now. Heck, buy two!
What's the combat like on the console ? Is it like errr how to say this MMORPG combat or press a button to use your weapon and another to block. So basicllly is it like dragon age 2 combat
I was looking forward to getting this, but knowing that the computer version will be better is kind of annoying (my comp wont be able to handle it). Will getting the xbox version still leave the game a good experience anyway?
but help me on which game i should get for the ps3 check my profile. Demon's souls, borderlands, or Dragon Age : Origins which one should i pick? check my video, Demon's Souls or Borderlands? i didn't include dragon age origins tho so just pick out of the 3
What's the use when the pc is better, it takes alot of requirements or a super computer to play them, which I believe most of us couldn't afford. Not to mention installation!
I love this game so much, I've played every race, every class, every specialization, and worked with every ending. It was so epic. I wish I could do it all again.
Actually, to make sure you get accurate information, the console version also uses a pause option for more tactical play. However, the PC version has an alternate "overhead" view which allows you to get an additional view of the action. I don't have a problem with the console, because in reality, the view of the characters is really all that you would be able to see. Two other advantages of the PC version are higher graphics and the use of a mouse and keyboard.
i enjoy the final fantasy series i have a ps3 is this the best/most similar game to FF that i can get until FF comes out ? or can any1 recommend another?
Playing this in 2024 on PC after staying away from it in '09 due to how difficult it was. Now that I'm wiser and more patient, I saw all the things I missed. The game's awesome!!
Actually Dog is one of the best choices for a tank, you dont need to use any points apart from Constitution because you should have a DPS and Dog has no armour or skills so other points are wasted.
uh just a couple of questions to anyone who can help, ive always played everything on consoles but this looks real good on pc firstly, how do i know if my pc can stand up to this game? and secondly do u need to play this with constant online acces or not really?
I actually meant: if you did it once it SHOWS you're capable of doing that so basicly she's a blood mage, if you have never killed before, you're not a killer.
@grim3621 Actually quite the opposite. As the pixles are higher defined, the eye can see much more design flaws (if there be any) than a smaller screen. To be the same pixle definition, you would have to be sitting a great deal further away than you would a smaller screen.
2004 - 2011 were the best years for video games by far. Those last Xbox/PS2/GC releases going into the next gen with games like Oblivion/Halo3/Mass Effect/Dragon Age/GTAIV/COD 4/AC and many others released in such a relatively short time was legendary. To me, that period ended with release of Skyrim, which is still an amazing game, but I feel it started the trend of games, especially RPGs, getting progressively watered down and streamlined in order to accommodate "casual players" and the "modern audience". What a shame.
Finished Mass Effect 1 and 2, FFXIII, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey. I didn't really want this game but my need for a new RPG and this review kinda sold me on it. I bought it today and I'll be giving it a shot tonight. Hope it doesn't suck!
When bioware was good before EA devoured it gradually. Thanks Mike Laidlaw for this great game, although the sequels didn't turn as good as this one but they were still enjoying. Now you gone from Bioware i am afraid Dragon Age will go the same downhill Mass Effect Andromeda did. There's no point now for waiting another DA game, i was really hoping for another game though to take place in Tevinter.
Opted for the PC version, which I'm glad I did. This game has a ton of customizable features and in depth commands that I can't imagine working too well on the 360. I really like the hot bar feature, very reminiscent of everquest/ WoW.
I agree, I have it on 360 and PC and I really didn't miss the top-down view as much as I though I would on console, and apart from graphics that's the only difference.
Just finished this game today, I bough it for cheap years ago on steam, there are so many good older games that don't require the latest GPU to play if you just don't chase the hype for the latest released gimmick.
Press one face button to attack automatically. Then use the other 3 to map special moves like special abilities and tasks (anything really). I thought I would hate it, too since I hate MMO combat, but it was actually pretty fun. It's not like Dragon Age 2 where you have to press the attack button repeatedly.
I miss Alistar so much... The best character ever to be created in a game. This sounds depressing, but sometimes i would find myself giggling thinking about what he would do next. This is truly a masterpiece of a game. I played a human mage with all the DLC's, ending with a super op arcane mage/warrior. Never in a game have i felt the actual impact of my actions. Mass effect is good, but Origins is just fantastic.
the year is 2019 and the game still holds up...mostly!
here is to Kevin, we old school Gamespotters still remember you :D
He’s at larian studios now
@@joshnizzle i know brother
@@joshnizzleIs he a writer at Larian??
@@promark5317 I believe so
@@joshnizzle Makes sense. His reviews at gamespot were very well written and often times borderline whimsical lol.
Love that Kevin VanOrd went from reviewing this to being a writer on Baldur’s Gate 3, 15ish years later.

Nah but seriously Origins is better than Skryim. But Oblivion and Morrowind on the other hand.

Slytherin Pride what does age matter? a 9/10 game is still 9/10 50 years later.
Kevin really excels when it comes to reviewing RPGs.
More like inorganically reading a script.
Dragon age for the action
Mass Effect for the Role Playing
Together?
Mass Age
no dragon effect :D
zeratu1000 Dragon Effect sounds like a Badass name.
Agreed. Dragon Effect
dragon age for action and mass effect for role playing? I would prefer vice versa
Mass Dragon Age Effect 2:Inquisition Origins: part 3 Andromeda.
This guy is an awesome reviewer. Good critical feedback without going on a negative tangent like most IGN reviews.

without a doubt one of the BEst RPG ever made, STory, gameplay and everything in it its amazing.

i rly so hope that DA3 will rival or surpass DA origins... DA2 what's that
How does it feel to see DA3 is a rival to DA:O
Well, Inquisition definitely didn't surpass origins, it did hold up beside it.
@parkerman23 I'm playing the PC version, and yeah it has that also, but it will highlight the item with a yellow boarder until you look at, so unless you never check your inventory when you get new items, it doesn't seem that big of a problem. Yeah, the thing is i still dont totall get the fighting system right, like do you just chose a target or, it X or A or what ever system you have?
It's a good story, but I really don't like the slow combat and retarded AI. I do want to finish the game though, it really is interesting!
I never finished the game. I stopped towards the end because I got bored. That was many years ago. XD

@719AO What are number 1 and 2?
best game ever
Great review. But I still have ONE question. Is this game open-ended, or is it a story driven game, where you don't go to misions for yourself??
@LWebb1000 the pc is usually also able to have bigger a bigger hotbat than the consoles in RPG...
i only have the option to get the 360 version and i really want this game but they've been bashing the console versions alot. should i still get it?
for pc:
the gameplay is realtime and you controle yourself and your team with the mouse and the shortcuts ; but you can hold on the gameplay, give commands and go on... and you can give every of your teammates exact orders for their reactions in fight, like: when under 50 hp...take a potion
i dont know if the system has great changes on xbox360 and ps3
if you was down to your last 60 dollars and it was the year 2002 would you choose dragon age orgins or dark alliance?
you can play it on a laptop as long as your laptop meets the minimum specs (though it might run slowly if you only just meet the specs) - also your laptop will probably get pretty hot running the game
help help should i get this or two worlds 2 btw i use xbox 360
Does this one have healing magic?
@TheEman119 And what did you gain from reading them all?
I played Mass Effect series and I loved every minute of it. Is this game similar to the Mass Effect such as great story, good/evil choices?

are you able to play with "birds view" all the time on the PC version? then I might get it cuz thats awesome:P
Is this game still have a framerate issue in PS3?
does the game end like after the last quest or can you still play on
whats the best mage warrior or rouge?
IS the Downloadable content in the ps3 version or is it xbox ad pc only?
just started playing for the first time and cannot believe how beautiful the music is, and the characters are so real! love it love it love it!!
haha I'm just now playing this 8 years later and I feel the same! very few games offer this much depth and interesting decisions

mmmm. What should i take? Risen or dragon age: origins?
can the PC version be downloaded into a MAC?
but help me on which game i should get for the ps3 check my profile. Demon's souls, borderlands, or Dragon Age : Origins
which one should i pick?
check my video, Demon's Souls or Borderlands?
i didn't include dragon age origins tho so just pick out of the 3

Do the races have their own unique abilities?
what should i get dragon age or borderlands?
I love this game so much, I've played every race, every class, every specialization, and worked with every ending. It was so epic. I wish I could do it all again.
Actually, to make sure you get accurate information, the console version also uses a pause option for more tactical play. However, the PC version has an alternate "overhead" view which allows you to get an additional view of the action. I don't have a problem with the console, because in reality, the view of the characters is really all that you would be able to see.
Two other advantages of the PC version are higher graphics and the use of a mouse and keyboard.
I'm trying to decide between this and Demon's Souls. They both get about the same reviews, but which is better?
Any help?
@UnionJackGaming Not trying to advertise here, but I'm getting the Ultimate PC Edition too from Amazon. Its only £18!
i enjoy the final fantasy series
i have a ps3
is this the best/most similar game to FF that i can get until FF comes out ? or can any1 recommend another?
should I get this for PC or PS3?? Thx!
is this as gd and deep as mass affect?
Playing this in 2024 on PC after staying away from it in '09 due to how difficult it was. Now that I'm wiser and more patient, I saw all the things I missed. The game's awesome!!
Still worth getting now?
when u beat the game can u play on?
@kiensmf Did you get Baldurs Gate or Dragon Age? :)
@COLodii well steam has it on sale right now!
What system are you using, if I may ask?
Actually Dog is one of the best choices for a tank, you dont need to use any points apart from Constitution because you should have a DPS and Dog has no armour or skills so other points are wasted.
uh just a couple of questions to anyone who can help, ive always played everything on consoles but this looks real good on pc firstly, how do i know if my pc can stand up to this game? and secondly do u need to play this with constant online acces or not really?
I actually meant: if you did it once it SHOWS you're capable of doing that so basicly she's a blood mage, if you have never killed before, you're not a killer.
is there much of a differce between the pc game and the xbox game? and is it worth getting on the xbox? cause i dont need another pc game lol
interested in getting this title. however its not an mmorpg is it?, i mean im not paying to play online. is it single player?
@spontaneoussam2 They are developed by Bioware too, just in case you were wondering, but they are old.
2006
cool review,I'm thinking of picking up the ultimate edition soon, been looking for something good to play after I finish Skyrim
Finished Mass Effect 1 and 2, FFXIII, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey. I didn't really want this game but my need for a new RPG and this review kinda sold me on it. I bought it today and I'll be giving it a shot tonight. Hope it doesn't suck!
i like how thorough gamespot is with their reviews
When bioware was good before EA devoured it gradually.
Thanks Mike Laidlaw for this great game, although the sequels didn't turn as good as this one but they were still enjoying. Now you gone from Bioware i am afraid Dragon Age will go the same downhill Mass Effect Andromeda did. There's no point now for waiting another DA game, i was really hoping for another game though to take place in Tevinter.
I wanna get this game, but for xbox, should I?
@relentlesssinner90
For it to be an MMO, it would have to be online and massively multiplayer.
What do you think MMO means?
Opted for the PC version, which I'm glad I did. This game has a ton of customizable features and in depth commands that I can't imagine working too well on the 360.
I really like the hot bar feature, very reminiscent of everquest/ WoW.
soooo...im renting this game but i havent gotten far is it any good should I buy it or not? Someone help, i dont wanna waste any money....
I agree, I have it on 360 and PC and I really didn't miss the top-down view as much as I though I would on console, and apart from graphics that's the only difference.
can you free roam around the game world or this this game linear?
the @DafuqGamerz thing does not work. instead use the reply button beside the thumbs up and down
@mirokumasta it does because this is a dragon age video's comment section.
is it worth it on xbox?
IM thinking Should i get Dragon Age, or Demon's Souls?
Just finished this game today, I bough it for cheap years ago on steam, there are so many good older games that don't require the latest GPU to play if you just don't chase the hype for the latest released gimmick.
Press one face button to attack automatically. Then use the other 3 to map special moves like special abilities and tasks (anything really). I thought I would hate it, too since I hate MMO combat, but it was actually pretty fun. It's not like Dragon Age 2 where you have to press the attack button repeatedly.
kind of is actually with all the different attacks, stuns, classes and you can actually run around during combat unlike runescape
this or fable 3?
i need some1's opinion
I miss Alistar so much... The best character ever to be created in a game. This sounds depressing, but sometimes i would find myself giggling thinking about what he would do next. This is truly a masterpiece of a game. I played a human mage with all the DLC's, ending with a super op arcane mage/warrior. Never in a game have i felt the actual impact of my actions. Mass effect is good, but Origins is just fantastic.
