demon's souls is one of the best game i have ever played, the game technically never ends because once you beat it, it starts over again and the enemies are harder what's not to love?!?
Not true. They don’t get infinitely harder on infinite replays. There’s only like maybe 7 NG+s I think where the enemies will get harder. Then it tops out and stays the same.
Elden Ring is launching in a couple of days and I can’t wait, so I thought I’d revisit the game review that got me started on Souls games. I watched this when it was published and though I had to play this game, and now, 12 years later, I’m chomping at the bit waiting for my next From hit. May there be many many more.
It’s definitely waayy up there, but I still think the greatest game of all time on the PlayStation is Shadow of the Colossus, and just like Demon’s Souls, it was HIGHLY innovative, had GORGEOUS art design, and was addicting to play. The only thing DeS was missing that SotC had was the heartstring tug. I never felt bad killing enemies in DeS, but good lord did SotC cause the biggest lump in my throat, choking me up every time I downed a boss (especially when they were just minding their own business, not harming me!), and the ending made me cry. Very few special video games can cause that kind of emotion. And I don’t say that to take away from DeS obvious amazing atmosphere (I’m of course talking about the original PS3 version; not the dumpster fire that Bluepoint made for the PS5). The OG DeS did cause outstanding tension, fear when being invaded, and a feeling of isolation and despair. It caused very different emotions than SotC.

Don't get me wrong, Demon's Souls was and still is an amazing game, but Objectively speaking Dark Souls 1 is the best out of all the Souls games. It had everything that made Demon's Souls good, took out some bad things and then some upgrades. One example is the map/world: in Demon's Souls you teleport from the nexus to different locations. However in Dark Souls EVERYTHING is connected : the world is out there to explore and it's build in a masterful way. How many times did I walk and played for hours just to get back at a familiar place by opening a door or climbing a ladder? When the game is over you can spawn at the start and walk through almost all the world without loading (exceptions new anor londo and Gwym's final battle). The game was more fluid, the story was better, the fighting was better and there's a lot more different environments. Demon's souls is : world 1 castle, world 2 mines, world 3 towers, world 4 rocky mountains and 5 is a swamp. In Dark Souls you get all that AND a forest, water falls, caverns, lakes, temples, churches, an underground hidden in a huge tree that brings you to the actual earth level where ashes of dragons feed the roots of other huge trees only to realize you're under the whole map and the whole world that you explored which was gigantic is all bases on a bunch of tree's. MIND BLOWN.
In my opinion, the greatest game ever made (Dark Souls a very close second, maybe tied). The atmosphere is perfect, level design mind blowing (still). I could go on and on.
Dark souls has some severely underdeveloped sections. I'd say the moment to moment gameplay is better in Demon's but the overall continuity and world design is better in dark souls.

@MultiCaliban Don't know if you have/haven't decided to buyit, but here's my two cents. Although there are different classes in the beginning of the game, and they will decide your fighting style for the first few areas, it is possible for any character to branch out into different paths. Started as a magician but also like big weapons? no problem, simple pay souls to upgrade your strength (or any other stat, it's this games version of leveling up) and you can wield it. i remember watching this review before i got this game... its hard on your first play through, but it gets really easy once you've finished it a few times... *sigh* i remember going through area 3-1 for the first time... memories...
When I first played this game, I thought it was terrible. I didn't go past the tutorial. Then I went back and played it, and liked it a lot, but I died tremendously to the point of where I was getting mad as hell. Now I'm getting the hang of it, and loving it. :D
This game is amazing!! it's very very hard but once you get used to it its not so bad, this is not a game for poor sports if u die u messed up, it's nicely balanced, all about the players skill.
I can't explain why, but I like Demon's Souls more than its Dark cousins. When I played Dark Souls I got aggrivated in Blighttown and stopped playing, though I may pick up again later. Demon's Souls, however, just keeps reeling me back in. I still haven't beaten it yet, because I have to be in the mood for it, but I've got one world left.
I picked up dark souls last week and blighttown has been giving me a hard time aswell, it's easily hardest area in the game so far but I refuse to give up! I've never played demon's souls but I want to. Infant I actually went into the store to pick up demon's souls but I couldn't find any copies left so I picked up dark souls instead. Either way I'm still really enjoying dark souls alot. It's one of the best games I've played in a while!
You Tube I am enjoying Dark Souls 2. It doesn't quite have the enemy variety, but it's still an engaging experience with some beautiful environment design. The hub-ish area is gorgeous!
@JSasRays I died when I first started, I was use to other games. Just run in kill, finish, complete. Once I realized how this game was met to be played I never died again.
managed to beat Dark Souls today, and recently ordered this game! and to top it all off we get Dark Souls 2 next month! ah the perfect time to get into the Souls series!
i still need to sink my teeth into demon souls, ive only beaten the first boss and i haven't played it much since. it's by no means a bad game! just so many great games so little time
this is a really really good review. He gets it! Meanwhile the guys at IGN are like, "duuuggghhh, but it's so hard, the only people who should play it are hardcore gamer masochists." Thank the Lord that an intern slipped in there and rated it 9.4 on IGN before he left. I could hug that man.
Was just about to comment here to say this is one of the best game reviews I’ve seen anywhere. I feel like reviews by big outlets days have really taken a dive
Josh Mclaughlin A lot of people feel that way. I played Demon's>Dark>Dark II. There is just something off with the worlds in 2. It doesn't feel cohesive, it feels like a mess kind of.
No new game has been announced, but From Software has stated they're working on a new project. It was probably Steel Battalion, but after that it could be the next Souls game.
@deliman there is a slight difficut mode, if you constantly died a lot. The monsters gets harder and harder until it reached the peak that it can kill you if you are not careful. Early in the game, you get adjusted to the controls and dodging is an important factor in the game.
@shadowkill555 there are no difficulty settings on this game. but like the other two people have said, all you need to beat this game are time and patience. and there is an incredibly helpful demons souls wiki online that you can use if you're stuck or don't understand something.
No, they are both set in the same world, just set in a different place and time. Dark Souls takes place in the land of Lordran, in the Age of Fire, close to the Age of Darkness, while Demon Souls takes place in Boletaria. NPCs in Dark Souls mention Boletaria in their dialog and items also have lore from Boletaria. The next Souls title will most likely take place in another province/country. Trust me, look up the lore in the game, IT IS FANTASTIC, not another generic storyline.
I dont know why everyone complains about no voice chat. it makes sense why they did it. It's because they're not actually together, one of them is just like a ghost of themselves in another world. If they are actually in separate worlds, how would they communicate? Skype works.
Well actually it has been confirmed that Dark Souls and Demon's Souls aren't related in any way, so it's more like a spiritual successor than a sequel. Basically two different games set in two different worlds.
they have an R2 attack that has long range and is really fast and there is a weapon called the scraping spear which damages the durability of your oponents weapons with every hit so after 3 hits or so you have won the fight.
This game was great, best part is that still have 3 years and a new game, they still have server events. And though the invading may seem harsh and dumb, sometimes it's really fun and rewarding.
I know this has all got a bit heated, but you guys obviously come from two totally different gaming backgrounds, so you're always going to disagree. Basically donkeylips, the fact that you have to redo a section if you die to get back your souls not only forces you to get better through practice, but adds pressure to succeed and rewards you with your souls back and the extra ones you made on the way.Surely you must agree it's alot more satisfying to beat an area when you've had to work at it.
Been playing this game for a total of 21 hours all in. Just had my new Royalty character finally beat all up to the tower night and beyond. At last. Plenty souls this time round.
The ghosts aren't actually other players (though it sais they are,) they are just animated. You can tell because they always have the same noob equipement and follow the same paths.
"Demon Souls is one of the finest games of 2009" Correction: It is the finest game of 2009. I hardly even remember any games that came out of that year except for this one.
Many other great games came out in 2009. Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Killzone 2, Dirt 2, Street Fighter 4, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, Dragon Age Origins.
@PsychoticSnake enemies up the line don't do that. where are you getting these assumptions from? enemies wont come after you until your like 5 feet in their sight, and none of the enemies wonder around, they're all pretty much hiding behind things and just waiting for you to encounter them.
Just ordered this game, I started hearing about Dark Souls and then I found out that there was a first game. This looks fucking amazing! and I don't even play RPGs that much. Can't wait for it to get here!
My only issue with all souls games is that they become obsolete quickly. For example I just now started playing Dark Souls 3 but the game has been out for over a year and most of the community is much higher level probably doing PVP somewhere later in the game. As a result summon signs to help me coop boss battles are rare to find. And if you were to go all the way back to Demon Souls, the community is pretty much gone for good so you'll be playing it alone. What makes the souls games so much fun is the community and without it souls is only half the fun.
I like how people from other consoles joke about PS3's supposedly having all the children on this console, yet this title is for a mature hardcore audience, and it's a PS3 exclusive... That just pissed on their bonfire.
An entire generation of gamers raised on Halo and Call of Duty has never trudged through an epic journey like this, something on the scale of intricacy and difficulty of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Dark Souls is Zelda, all grown up, evil.
@FloresRain PS3 disks use Blu-Ray format to hold the content. Xbox 360 uses DVD. Blu-Ray can hold and run much more content than DVD. Since the new Dark Souls is going to be multi-platform, the developers will have to be able to make the game playable on DVD format, which will more than likely result in small environments, less weapons, worse framerate, etc. Unless they make it on more than one disk for 360, but I doubt it.
It's not really an "RPG" in the traditional sense. It's brutally difficult and you'll need to be on alert 100% of the time. One mistake means death. It's brilliant :P
I absolutely LOVED this game. And I could t imagine Dark Souls being better but it actually is. I hope this trend keeps up and Dark Souls 2 rocks. I highly recommend both Demon's and Dark souls to everyone. They're hard as hell, but so very rewarding and entertaining
I just picked it up and ran through the first stage on four different characters (I'm obsessive about trying everything). Took me bout six hours to find all the nooks and crannies and master it. This is one of those games you hate yourself for playing because you know you'll die, yet you can't stop.
Oh I have looked up the lore, you know EpicNameBro? He has made some fantastic lore videos explaining pretty much everything and every character. But sadly, it indeed was confirmed by Fromsoftware that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls aren't related to each other in any way. Except for game mechanics. It would be pretty rad if they were.
@jtthegame316 a no invite system was the whole point of the game and is the same reason there's no voice chat.... anonymity and loneliness is what makes this game great you learn to co-operate without talking or you die its awesome
I will have Dark Souls soon, but NOT until I complete Demons Souls! I think I owe it to myself to see the whole game before I move onto the next. Dark Souls will be my reward for fighting through the awesome depths of hell that is Demons Souls.
i have had this game a whole day. Still on the first map. the first map !!! the first checkpoint!! it's bloody difficult. BUT I LOVE IT SO FREAKIN MUCH. I'm gonna continue now.
@kingharris22 well the difficulty comes from the fact that danger could come from all angles. Like falling off a cliff during a boss fight, or having multiple enemies coming at you at the same time when you least expect it... Sure after getting used to all the worlds, things get wayy easier.

This game is amazing!! it's very very hard but once you get used to it its not so bad, this is not a game for poor sports if u die u messed up, it's nicely balanced, all about the players skill.
The game you'll love to hate, but will never be able to put down. Fiendishly difficult, but very rewarding.
CoNoRmAcC That should say infact not infant.... Stupid auto correct!
If I like Demons Souls, should I get the others as well?
Ok thx, bt i have to get ds 2 i mean jst cause it might not be as good as the others im sure its still a good game
Get ready. I personally think this is the best in the series.
i still need to sink my teeth into demon souls, ive only beaten the first boss and i haven't played it much since. it's by no means a bad game! just so many great games so little time
Yes its a good time for souls fans ;)
this is a really really good review. He gets it!
Meanwhile the guys at IGN are like, "duuuggghhh, but it's so hard, the only people who should play it are hardcore gamer masochists." Thank the Lord that an intern slipped in there and rated it 9.4 on IGN before he left. I could hug that man.
Remake this with the bloodborne engine
The game is coming to ps5 as a full remake.

Gave some of the best reviews
Was just about to comment here to say this is one of the best game reviews I’ve seen anywhere. I feel like reviews by big outlets days have really taken a dive
Im hoping ill have more fun with this than I did with dark souls 2. I absolutely adored dark souls 1, but I really didn't like 2 :-/
Josh Mclaughlin A lot of people feel that way. I played Demon's>Dark>Dark II. There is just something off with the worlds in 2. It doesn't feel cohesive, it feels like a mess kind of.
DS2 was such a letdown after DS1 for me as well. Thought I was the only one.
It only came out last month in Europe, sadly, we all had to wait a whole lot longer than everyone else.
I'm still going to get it as soon as possible,
I'm in trouble - Please recomend this message!
There's actually quite a lot of story and background, you just need to talk to people and look for it yourself, it's not handed to you on a platter.
Here before they give it game of the year 2020
@shadowkill555 there are no difficulty settings on this game. but like the other two people have said, all you need to beat this game are time and patience. and there is an incredibly helpful demons souls wiki online that you can use if you're stuck or don't understand something.
@halindan the game is surprisingly very active.. their's alot of notes and players online all the time
This game is so fucking awesome!! I'm playing it for 10 hours straight.
Actually Demon's Souls has dedicated servers while Dark Souls is peer-to-peer connection. So Demon's souls has smoother online.
Instead of saying it's hard, people should say it's dangerous. It is only hard until you learn the tricks to stay alive.
Who else playing in 2020? Please don’t just be me
wow 2009 i just beat this game a week a go. then beat it a second time. amazing game.
"Demon Souls is one of the finest games of 2009"
Correction: It is the finest game of 2009. I hardly even remember any games that came out of that year except for this one.
Uncharted 2, Killzone 2.
Hands down one of the best games of this generation.
Can't wait for it to get here!
the best thing is that there is no ninja ring or water running ring >_< but bad thing is you can roll fast with only 50 percent burden
@jtthegame316
a no invite system was the whole point of the game and is the same reason there's no voice chat.... anonymity and loneliness is what makes this game great you learn to co-operate without talking or you die its awesome
That's actually one of the best bosses in the game because if you're playing online that boss can be another player
