Whether or not he has his FAA certification is irrelevant to whether he's making money off the videos. Some of his drone shots were in violation of FAA drone rules, yes. But they were in violation regardless of whether he was making money off the videos. You don't get to break the rules just because you don't make money off the videos.
Yea, if you set your home point. Also, there was a version of the DJI Go App that wasn't setting the home point accurately and causing flyaways, but I'm pretty sure this video was made long before that unstable version of the app.

yeah, I've noticed that for a while now. Can you imagine if you were hanging out with him? Let's leave.. "okay, np. I have to walk in & out of the room 4 times to get every angle for my vlog". Well a $1000 dollar done is a toy. $14,000+ cinema drones are not.. Which is what I fly for shoots. Also a drone that small falling would cause less damage than a golf ball or baseball. but I don't see anyone crying on line when a $5.00 baseball takes out a $500 windshield or $1000 french bay window.

Not exactly more "accurate", but rather another microcosm. As a claw hammer has points at both ends of it. Also the claw will not crush, under impact, and absorb some of the energy that is being exerted. The psi of the collision could change dramatically depending on where it made contact.
Casey.. I was never much into Quad copters. After winning a Phantom 3 at work. Charging the controller and drone battery a couple nights later. I took off with my first flight. At first it was like a kid in a candy shop. Watching the copter hover at eye level. Slowly I moved the drone higher and higher in the air. Seconds later, it slowly drifted backward with no response.. crashed into a tree being stuck two .. almost three floors high. A cold freezing night. I put up a ladder and climbed a tree with the garden tool. I climbed the tree until the branches were too thin. I used the garden tool and finally knocked the drone free from the tree. It came crashing down and surprising it landed right on the landing gear. I thought almost no damage occurred. Later I learned it cost me a ribbon cable, housing and center board. Then I thought maybe the Mavic was the way to go..I am happy to watch your video.. It has saved me alot of money I believe..

Unfortunately fly aways happen. My phantom 4 was gone on Sep 24th contacted DJI couple of days after; until now Oct 12th. no data analysis provided or results. They are so slow in terms of costumer service or i'm just one of the few victims? Calgary snowed already probably the drone that flew away is unusable...
Sorry about your drone! Their customer service is a total joke, and there's no number to call to speak to anyone. Live chat, or email, if you call and talk to tech support you get someone with rough english who tells you you need to go online to the chat...had to cancel my Mavic order because the shipping address got somehow changed at checkout (not what I typed in, but the billing address had to be right for my card to go through...), but they refused to correct the address.
DRONE EXPERT: when you fly behind a building the drone loses connection and it stops, it then flys upwards 20m (to clear buildings on way back) it then flys in a straight line back home to take off point, in NYC the buildings are so high, you need to set the drone to go up 100m higher or what ever you want to be sure to clear buildings on the staight path home. This said, i cant understand why it ended up in the drink! DJi should come and do an investigation, they should get you to re enact this and see what happens!!!!!!!!
I wonder if the DJI just stops (obstacle avoidance) if its on RTH because of going out of range/singal, if something is blocking its route? Been flying with DJI a while now, and never let the drone out of my site

Casey didn't focus it properly in his other videos. Look up "Michael Shainblum DJI Mavic 4k test footage" and you can see how good the image quality is, honestly nearly on par with the Phantom 4.

You have never heard Casey's motto on equipment use. If he was always careful with it he'd never be able to conveniently get the shot. He prides convenience over the safety of the equipment because he wants to be able to get the shot when he can. It's why he used to strap his Phantom 4's to his backpack out of the case. But you misunderstand, most of the cameras he breaks and drones he breaks are paid for by him at the store. They're not cheap, but he wants to get the good shot as conveniently as possible.

How did you manage to turn off the Return to Base function *and* shut down the controller *and* not register it with the FAA *and* not have the required FAA ID on it that would allow it to be returned to you? You shouldn't be allowed near drones. You break them, fly them illegally, and manage to defeat all the functions they have inbuilt to stop you losing them via OOR/signal loss failures.

Sometimes when you travel, you have to choose to leave certain things behind if they do not fit in the luggage or are something that is not worth hanging on to. Its a shame since it probably was a decently fitting suit. Maybe it did not have sentimental value or was a gift and that was a hamper or clothing return instead. I am sure it will be donated to Goodwill or something.

So far as I know, they should be flying back to where they launched once lost connection with the controller, and this is directed by GPS signal and the GPS coordinates of their "original point", which they have stored in their internal memories after taking off.
Auto-home has been a feature since APM 1.something back about 6 years ago. Especially in cities with tall buildings, GPS is wonky. It may auto-land if the battery gets close to dead (keep in mind the flight controller only pulls maybe a quarter watt, where the motors pull hundreds of watts, so even after the batteries are "dead" for flying, the FC/radio can keep on trucking for several hours.) My bet is it got tangled in a line on the boat and is just hanging out. Would be nice if it had a strobe.
You still didn't explain the out of range part. The mavic pro and phantom 4 is suppose to return home on its own, or at least back into range, unless Casey put the drone out of range at like 3% battery....
Well, he didn't know to focus it, so perhaps he didn't change the setting to return home. By default, it will auto land upon losing signal and I'm guessing he didn't change that.

Well, if the Mavic is waterproof (don't know) it may indeed be radioing it's GPS coordinates, but odds are that was simply the last thing it transmitted before succumbing to water infiltration. However, if you're really desperate for a drone of this design, you can always get yourself a Prodrone (now GDU)"Byrd". It had the folding arms and 4k resolution (& infrared) at this time LAST YEAR (you know, before DJI, etc. stole the design). Good luck.
Radio signals at normal power levels penetrate water up to some 40 centimeters... you wouldn't be receiving new coordinates even if it's alive. That's why ROVs don't use radio for remote control.
DJI drones are reliable that's why Casey can fly it above the river. In fact if you are a regular viewer(like me) he does drone shots with his P4 over NYC in his Vlogs almost everyday.

Jean Naipas Why does flying over the river present a risk? I mean other than the fact that the drones don't float. I'm wondering what more of a risk does it present versus flying over anything else? Surely the water didn't cause the fly away. I try to pay attention to solar activity not fly on days when it's bad because that can cause issues with the gps me radio signal but I've never heard of issues regarding water aside from the obvious. I lost orientation several hundred feet out over the lake here and almost panicked until I remembered how to regain orientation. Panicking is the worst thing you do.
+rrmcallister I don't think you're allowed to do that, there are regulations on how close you're allowed to fly over other people, and you need to get qualifications to do so. That's why the police told him to move.
ANY and EVERY Rc flier/pilot knows you put a sticker tag on there with your AMA information and name and contact info (at least phone number) so if found you MAY at least still get it back. PLUS some of the custom built drones (by us hobbiests) have GPS that when it looses signal it will AUTOMATICALLY return home. (unless it crashed before it lost sig of course) and will always show the gps coords in the video feed on our monitors. (not the recording though so camera men rest easy lol)

Not exactly more "accurate", but rather another microcosm. As a claw hammer has points at both ends of it. Also the claw will not crush, under impact, and absorb some of the energy that is being exerted. The psi of the collision could change dramatically depending on where it made contact.

Casey.. I was never much into Quad copters. After winning a Phantom 3 at work. Charging the controller and drone battery a couple nights later. I took off with my first flight. At first it was like a kid in a candy shop. Watching the copter hover at eye level. Slowly I moved the drone higher and higher in the air. Seconds later, it slowly drifted backward with no response.. crashed into a tree being stuck two .. almost three floors high. A cold freezing night. I put up a ladder and climbed a tree with the garden tool. I climbed the tree until the branches were too thin. I used the garden tool and finally knocked the drone free from the tree. It came crashing down and surprising it landed right on the landing gear. I thought almost no damage occurred. Later I learned it cost me a ribbon cable, housing and center board. Then I thought maybe the Mavic was the way to go..I am happy to watch your video.. It has saved me alot of money I believe..

Being irresponsible and unnacountable for some kinda serious stuff with flying/crashing drones in dangerous places which not only could go badly and cause injury, but negatively affects the drone/rc hobbyist/racing global community.

Unfortunately fly aways happen. My phantom 4 was gone on Sep 24th contacted DJI couple of days after; until now Oct 12th. no data analysis provided or results. They are so slow in terms of costumer service or i'm just one of the few victims? Calgary snowed already probably the drone that flew away is unusable...
Sorry about your drone! Their customer service is a total joke, and there's no number to call to speak to anyone. Live chat, or email, if you call and talk to tech support you get someone with rough english who tells you you need to go online to the chat...had to cancel my Mavic order because the shipping address got somehow changed at checkout (not what I typed in, but the billing address had to be right for my card to go through...), but they refused to correct the address.
DRONE EXPERT: when you fly behind a building the drone loses connection and it stops, it then flys upwards 20m (to clear buildings on way back) it then flys in a straight line back home to take off point, in NYC the buildings are so high, you need to set the drone to go up 100m higher or what ever you want to be sure to clear buildings on the staight path home. This said, i cant understand why it ended up in the drink! DJi should come and do an investigation, they should get you to re enact this and see what happens!!!!!!!!

Casey didn't focus it properly in his other videos. Look up "Michael Shainblum DJI Mavic 4k test footage" and you can see how good the image quality is, honestly nearly on par with the Phantom 4.

You have never heard Casey's motto on equipment use.
If he was always careful with it he'd never be able to conveniently get the shot. He prides convenience over the safety of the equipment because he wants to be able to get the shot when he can.
It's why he used to strap his Phantom 4's to his backpack out of the case. But you misunderstand, most of the cameras he breaks and drones he breaks are paid for by him at the store. They're not cheap, but he wants to get the good shot as conveniently as possible.
+Soham He is right though. Casey would treat his stuff better if he wasn't just given it for free. Then again half this stuff is probably just shit he does to have interesting stuff in the vlogs.

The drone is gone? How did you manage to turn off the Return to Base function *and* shut down the controller *and* not register it with the FAA *and* not have the required FAA ID on it that would allow it to be returned to you? You shouldn't be allowed near drones. You break them, fly them illegally, and manage to defeat all the functions they have inbuilt to stop you losing them via OOR/signal loss failures.

Sometimes when you travel, you have to choose to leave certain things behind if they do not fit in the luggage or are something that is not worth hanging on to. Its a shame since it probably was a decently fitting suit. Maybe it did not have sentimental value or was a gift and that was a hamper or clothing return instead. I am sure it will be donated to Goodwill or something.
Casey could have given it to a homeless person but he is too sentimental to film something like that ...the suit will find its way to someone who needs it hopefully and carry Casey's good vibes with it

So far as I know, they should be flying back to where they launched once lost connection with the controller, and this is directed by GPS signal and the GPS coordinates of their "original point", which they have stored in their internal memories after taking off.

How did he lose a drone that in what DJI claims is not possible to lose? What happened to the "if your out of range" it auto returns home?
Auto-home has been a feature since APM 1.something back about 6 years ago. Especially in cities with tall buildings, GPS is wonky. It may auto-land if the battery gets close to dead (keep in mind the flight controller only pulls maybe a quarter watt, where the motors pull hundreds of watts, so even after the batteries are "dead" for flying, the FC/radio can keep on trucking for several hours.)
My bet is it got tangled in a line on the boat and is just hanging out. Would be nice if it had a strobe.
You still didn't explain the out of range part. The mavic pro and phantom 4 is suppose to return home on its own, or at least back into range, unless Casey put the drone out of range at like 3% battery....
Or it got snagged, and *then* went dead while trying to right itself, etc.
Well, he didn't know to focus it, so perhaps he didn't change the setting to return home. By default, it will auto land upon losing signal and I'm guessing he didn't change that.

Well, if the Mavic is waterproof (don't know) it may indeed be radioing it's GPS coordinates, but odds are that was simply the last thing it transmitted before succumbing to water infiltration. However, if you're really desperate for a drone of this design, you can always get yourself a Prodrone (now GDU)"Byrd". It had the folding arms and 4k resolution (& infrared) at this time LAST YEAR (you know, before DJI, etc. stole the design). Good luck.

Well, the most likely scenario is that somebody just found the drone and is currently selling it on ebay from that boat.
Radio signals at normal power levels penetrate water up to some 40 centimeters... you wouldn't be receiving new coordinates even if it's alive. That's why ROVs don't use radio for remote control.

DJI drones are reliable that's why Casey can fly it above the river. In fact if you are a regular viewer(like me) he does drone shots with his P4 over NYC in his Vlogs almost everyday.

Jean Naipas Why does flying over the river present a risk? I mean other than the fact that the drones don't float. I'm wondering what more of a risk does it present versus flying over anything else? Surely the water didn't cause the fly away.
I try to pay attention to solar activity not fly on days when it's bad because that can cause issues with the gps me radio signal but I've never heard of issues regarding water aside from the obvious.
I lost orientation several hundred feet out over the lake here and almost panicked until I remembered how to regain orientation. Panicking is the worst thing you do.
+rrmcallister I don't think you're allowed to do that, there are regulations on how close you're allowed to fly over other people, and you need to get qualifications to do so. That's why the police told him to move.

ANY and EVERY Rc flier/pilot knows you put a sticker tag on there with your AMA information and name and contact info (at least phone number) so if found you MAY at least still get it back. PLUS some of the custom built drones (by us hobbiests) have GPS that when it looses signal it will AUTOMATICALLY return home. (unless it crashed before it lost sig of course) and will always show the gps coords in the video feed on our monitors. (not the recording though so camera men rest easy lol)
This guy is constantly doing irresponsible and downright dangerous things with his multirotors. Douchebags like Casey are the reason we responsible RC flyers have to put up with so much flak from the general public. Personally I'm glad he lost it.

Ian Witten he was talking about the plane. But here's a heli too. That's a cool way to get to the airport. I've driven in NYC a lot and flew in and out often - going by helicopter instead of taxi would be awesome. The traffic is uh, a nightmare sometimes. :-/

So did DJI agree to give him a new Mawic drone like he wanted? If they do that then they are unbelievable.
Hopefully not! Hopefully, they start to treat his recklessness the same way they would treat one of us, which seems like it because they seemed to tell him to go search for it.
Most probably they will it's free advertising and Casey has shown a lot of love and exposure for their phantom 4 even buying a couple out of his pocket.
I get the feeling a lot of people just comment on his video's saying something nice to everyone just for the likes on the comment.
