The surfers back in the 60s thought this music was trash, they were more into jazz back in the day. Just like they had a huge distain for the 60s "surfer" movies like Gidget.
Per Songfacts The lyrics are basically a guide to good surf locations, but the "Surfin' U.S.A." music was based on Chuck Berry's 1958 hit "Sweet Little Sixteen." The Beach Boys did it as a tribute to Berry, but didn't get his permission first - maybe because Berry was in jail for transporting a minor across state lines. When Berry threatened to sue, The Beach Boys agreed to give him most of the royalties and list him as the song's composer. The song also helped build Berry's legend while he served his time. David Marks, who was a guitarist in The Beach Boys from 1961-1963, explains on the DVD Brian Wilson Songwriter 1962 - 1969, that he and Carl Wilson would play guitars every day after school, and one day Carl brought home the album Chuck Berry Is On Top. They loved the album and introduced Berry's sound to Brian Wilson, who loved the rhythm parts and put together "Surfin' U.S.A." based on that sound. Brian changed the lyrics and added a hook, but it is basically a rewrite of Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen."
Fun fact, this is actually a Chuck berry song called sweet little sixteen that Wilson took inspiration from and decided to swap out the various locations in the US that Berry named with surf spots.
The Beach Boys harmonies were just outstanding. The three Wilson brothers and cousin Mike Love were just a music machine - cranking out hit after hit!! Wonderful 60's music!
I love how they manage to fit in almost every great surf spot, in SoCal specifically, Cali generally, and even one in Hawaii... This song is enmeshed in my memory, and comes alive whenever I stop at these immortal beaches!
Some of the "go-go" dancers were doing the Twist, the Swim, the Pony, and even Mike Love, the lead singer, looked like he was doing the Monkey for a minute!
The Beach Boys are one of the best groups in rock history and arguably the greatest and important American band ever Lead singer/songwriter Brian Wilson is a pure musical genius. Their numerous hits include: "God Only Knows", "Don't Worry Baby", "Darlin'", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Help Me, Rhonda", "In My Room", Do It Again", "Caroline No", "California Girls", "You Still Believe Me" and one of the most influential songs ever written," Good Vibrations". The album, "Pet Sounds" was a landmark recording and Paul McCartney said it was the inspiration for "Sgt. Pepper's"
Not to mention I Get Around. I love the way Pet Sounds starts with the wonderfully optimistic Wouldn't It Be Nice & ends with the sad & elegiac Caroline No.
When i was a little kid circa 1975 my uncle gave me a record player & a box of his old 45's. This along with a dozen or so other BB's singles was among them. Within a few months I knew the words to every Beach Boys single in the case. Still do.
That album is the proof that Brian Wilson is a genius. He used multiple studios for a single song because the sound of certain instruments was better at one studio while others were better elsewhere. He mastered multitrack recording before most people knew what it was.
The Beach Boys were the feel-good music soundtrack to my childhood! There were lots of other surf-culture bands that used similar guitar styles, but the Beach Boys were more mainstream. There were a lot of music shows on TV where bands would appear live, often lip-synching to their recorded songs that were hits. The biggest was American Bandstand, but there were many others. Some featured the fans just watching or participating like this one, while others had regular teenagers who appeared on there dancing to all the songs. A lot of the videos on RUclips that look like music videos from that era were pulled from old tapes of these shows.
It was probably a performance for a TV show. TV studios started switching to color in the sixties, but sometimes they still archived shows in black and white.
I love this beach music of the sixties! The Beach Boys were probably the kings of this sound! This video looks like it was probably two television performances put together! They didn’t really have videos like the eighties did back then! Most of the videos we see from before the eighties are either live performances, television performances, or clips from movies! I love seeing the old dances they were doing, like the twist and the jerk! It looks like so much fun!❤️❤️
Gotta give Chuck Berry credit, which he officially received after suing the Beach Boys for plagiarising the tune to Sweet Little Sixteen. The Beach Boys tried to argue that they were honoring Chuck by borrowing his tune, but he didn't buy it, and insisted on a songwriting credit rather than cash as payment. Chuck was perhaps the shrewdest businessperson of all the early rockers, and he knew that continuous royalties would pay off over the long run.
You reminded me of the way that Rock & Roll started in the UK before the establishment had any idea how to handle it. So bands performed on the stage at local cinemas, expecting the crowd to just sit there and listen to the music. Didn't go well when they started dancing in the aisles, and ripping up the cinema seats
The Beach Boys were a much deeper band than people realized. A lot of folks just wrote them off as a surf band, but The Beatles thought very highly of their music.
This video was created after the fact by combining a TV show appearance (which takes up most of the video) with a live appearance that was filmed for TV (the TAMI Show), and then superimposing the original studio recording onto the combined clips. Trivia: the first clip shows David Marks, who was an early member of the band, was on their first four albums before leaving, and rejoined the band for a tour by the surviving original line-up members in 2012.
“...All over La Jolla...” We still live just a few minutes from La Jolla (Shores) Beach near San Diego. When we used to take the kids to the Beach we would generally go there. It seems we would always play this song on the way. At first the kids (friends/relatives) would be so excited that the song was mentioning the very beach we were going to. It soon became a ritual and the kids would insist that we listen to this song as we drove there. Such great memories.
This song - and Surfin' Safari were foundational to the Beach Boys fame in their early days when they were essentially adapting Chuck Berry riffs and song patterns to the subject of Girls, Cars and Surf. The harmonies of the brothers and the production of their later stuff were what kept them in the top tier, but then Brian Wilson took wings as a songwriter and the wrecking crew session musicians came in at just the right time to take them higher then higher still - culminating in the Pet Sounds era which gets about as far from this as you can go. From their early or mid-era songs I would always gravitate to "Fun Fun Fun" or "Little Honda" which both have so much energy going on that you could maybe power a town from them!
As I recall this was a reaction/follow to Chuck Berry's Back in the USA, which also prompted the Beatles to do Back in the USSR, forming kind of musical trifecta. Another cool thing about this song is they name the best surfing spots in Southern Cal, for instance, Doheny Beach near which we used to live in the lates 70s and 80s in Capistrano Beach and Dana Point.
This was the anthem I played whenever I took my older son skiing. Heading up to Loveland, Copper, or WinterPark on I70 when we got to Evergreen Parkway and could see the mountains on the continental divide I would select Surfin USA on the DVD player. My younger son barely knows who the Beach Boys are.
This is from the beginning of the Beach Boys' career soon after they graduated from high school. This and "Little Surfer Girl" were their first hits and there was a surfing craze at the time, which you can see in those silly beach movies from the early 60's. Other groups and singers sounding like them came along quickly, like Jan and Dean, Ronnie and the Daytonas, etc.
I remember when this came out in 1963. It was all about having fun at the beach, which I loved. I am from San Diego, and I knew about the beaches in the L.A. and Orange county area, but they also mentioned La Jolla in the song, and that made me feel great!!
The Beach Boys were from Hawthorne, California, which is a small city just about four miles East of the South Bay Beaches of Los Angeles, Manhattan Bch, El Porto, El Segundo, Dock Weiler State Bch., Gillian Bch, Toes Bch (Playa Del Rey/ Westchester, which is where I grew up) and they formed while in high school. They became one of the most bands in the world selling over 100 million albums world wide. They've got many great songs and influenced many musicians as well as single handedly creating a music genre, surf music, but a lot modern rock is built on their music, pop, power pop, boy bands, punk rock, alternative, even the psychedelic rock was influenced by Brian Wilson's creative genius. So many hits from fast to ballads, to rock, to love songs, songs about cars, songs about girls, they are one of the all time greatest American bands of all time.
That was from the "Steve Allen Show" - which was a variety show kind of like the Ed Sullivan Show. As for the first music video, that depends upon how you define "music video." If you define the term "music video" as "music put to images" - then the first music video was made in 1894 by Joseph Stern and Edward Mark, who set a recording of their song “The Little Lost Child” to a moving slide show and marketed it as an “illustrated song.” If you define "music video" as "music put to motion pictures," then you can go back to the '30s with films featuring performers like Cab Calloway. If you think of "music video" as a certain style or format of how the music is artistically put to film, then it's Elvis Presley's first movie, "Jailhouse Rock." If you define "music video" as a "short film made to promote a newly released song," then it could be either Bob Dylan with "Subterranean Homesick Blues," or the Beatles with their two songs "Paperback Writer" and "Rain." Now, I say it is either Bob Dylan or the Beatles because it depends on if you award the prize based on "first to be filmed" or "first to be released." Bob Dylan recorded his promotional film first - but didn't release it until almost a year after the Beatles released theirs in 1966. However, if you mean the first ever "official music video" - then the prize goes to Queen with “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 1975.
The Beach Boy all the way to the left...first time I ever saw him perform in anything the Beach Boys ever did. He was in the group at the beginning....but only for an instant.
From what I've read The Beach Boys realized not everyone could relate to surfing and beach life so they wrote about hot rods and car culture for the Heartland kids.
When "Little Deuce Coup" hit the airways, I lived in Illinois. We pre-driver's license teenagers argued frequently over the lyric: "...and one more thing, I got the pink slip, Daddy." The consensus was that it referred to a girl's lace garter, hanging as a trophy from the center mirror. Wasn't til I moved to California in the '70s and bought my first bike that I realized how wrong we were. The title to a CA vehicle was (and still is) a "pink slip" of stiff paper. I burst out laughing in the DMV.
Those striped Beach Boy shirts were a HUGE thing in 63. Most teenage boys had at least one. Then The Beatles hit in early 64 and no one was wearing them anymore.
The Beaches mentioned in the song, Del Mar, La Jolla, Swamis and Trestle are all beaches in San Diego County. I am fortunate to be living all of them within a 15 mile radius. :)
First warm day of spring you had to roll down the car windows and put the Beach Boys in the 8 track and cruise...gave you hope summer was going to be soon!!
I love their song forever. So, idk if you guys ever watched full house but the guy who played uncle Jesse (John stamos) was very close to The Beach Boys, he played drums for them before the show, and his character loved The Beach Boys, they actually guessed starred a few times and they let them use The Beach Boys song called forever. Uncle Jesse sang it to Rebecca at their wedding and then later they had uncle Jesse get famous and do a video using the same song. And you can still occasionally see John stamos do a performance with The Beach Boys. They preformed at a fair in my town and John was playing with them then.
This played on TV *once* and if you missed it, you missed it, never to be seen again until somebody did a Beach Boys retrospective 20-30 years later OR somebody uploaded it to RUclips 50 years later! It played on the radio daily back in the day, but this is the first time I have ever personally seen it. Cool reaction.
In my junior and Senior high school years. I liked the surfer lifestyle, the bikinied, tanned, long blond haired girls (Surfer girls) at the time some of the most hottest looking women. Wow!. In a junior high school class someonr sitting behind me asked if I was a surfer or a low rider. I said low rider. Because I thought that there were two types of surfers. A newbie surfer would be a low rider because they would ride low waves. A surfer someone who can surf the higher waves. But in reality Chicanos and surfers had some rivalry. In rare instances even have fights. Back to the topic, The Beach Boys are part of a genre called Surf Music. Dick Dale started the genre. The Beach Boys popularized it. Notable other artists/bands that are played Surf music: Del-Tones, Jan & Dean, The Ventures, The Go-Go's, The Bel-Airs, The Safaris, The Tornadoes, The Astronauts, The Temptations. If I missed anybody I'm sorry. I like the Beach Boys very good music and vibe. No recommendations, other commentators have mentioned some of my choices.
Lex when you said the girls in the back were just surfing. In fact, they were doing a dance called "The Swim". The girl in the swimsuit, earlier, dancing close to the camera was doing a version of "The Twist".
Decorum used to matter but unfortunately is hasn't in quite a while, hope it makes a comeback soon. The Beach Boys were a marvelous band to jam too. Roll down the windows, drop the top and crank it up.
Watching you 2 discover old music and making it new again is great. I grew up listening to these guys cause my dad was a fan . I love it even today. Keep digging , you will like these guys more and more. Its fun....dont read so much into it just dance and have fun :)
Before the Beatles became famous there was the Beach Boys. Unless the video is from a concert, in the 60s they were recordings from "variety" tv shows that highlighted all sorts of performers. There were a ton of them always hosted by a well known performer. There were so many. It was like they took the place of the westerns of which there were many. "Variety" shows are where all of the great bands made their appearances for us teens to see. These days there's music videos instead. It was great back then except there were no vcrs to record the show if it was missed.
The first acknowledged music video was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, because it was a difficult song for tv to handle on shows like the UK's Top Of The Pops. Videos became a normal thing for artists to do as a matter of course in 1981. Video Killed The Radio Star was the first video aired by MTV when it began a couple of years later, not actually the first video made. Hope this helps Brad 😀👍
There are soooo many great Beach Boys songs but my two faves are Don't Worry Baby and Barbara Ann - highly recommend you check out the studio versions of both!!
Growing up in the San Fernando Valley and in high school. My buddies and I would listen to the surf report on the radio and if they were good waves, we would ditch school to surf.
Such a weird coincidence that ive been listening to them nonstop the last two days after never actually listening to them and now you post this lmao. Find it weird but keep up the great vids!😂
There were music videos decades (or a century depending on your definition of music video) before "Video Killed the Radio Star" became the first music video that played on MTV.
Yes, it's a copy of Sweet Little Sixteen by Chuck Berry. How many people have noticed that Fun, Fun, Fun and Roll Over Beethoven are the same song I seldom hear it mentioned. One is just slower. Noticed on my own years ago. Play them and see.
Yes you realize of course that when this came out most of us here in United States never saw this film we only heard it coming over the radio and that was cool enough so nowadays with RUclips and all that and everything we get to see the actual film which is incredible and I You two are so lucky to be able to see all this stuff now..!!!
Look at how their pants are exactly the same high water length, and stay that way. The first part was a stage, and all the kids dancing were hired dancers. Might be from a movie.
I was 10 when this came out and lived in So Cal. Music shows back then were even cheesy to me as a kid,, probably because the people in charge of these shows were adults who didn't really know how to stage these acts. But we watched anyway! 👍❤🤙
I saw the Beachboys in 1965. They were great. It was nothing for Mike Love to come out into the audience or to take his shoes off on stage and perform in his socks.
During this part of their early career... one or two of them were still in high school. It was all in good fun. Capitol Records wanted them to keep recording this type of stuff and didn't really promote their more serious music.
The Beach Boys were iconic in American pop culture and rock-n-roll. So much so the Beatles were impressed and influenced by them. The California sound originated here. And as you said, it is historic being from 6o years ago. The song was recorded for television. Mist if what you see from days before MTV were videos shot to fill an allotted time on the show and used as promotional tools to promote the acts if they could not actually be on the program. Whether they were touring, out if the country, or otherwise unavailable, this kept them in the public eye and their music on the radio and minds of people who bought and played the music. IN MY ROOM, HELP ME, RHONDA, & GOD ONLY KNOWS are great follow-ups to this song. Enjoy.
The Beach Boys have a bunch of great and fun songs. I agree with the comment for "Help Me Rhonda" as well as many others. It's just too bad they never grew up to become beach men-lol.
The first music videos were probably late 50s to early 60s. Just check out "Mr Lonely" by Bobby Vinton, or Elvis's Jailhouse Rock. I think the 80s was when they became more mainstream, due to MTV.
Fun fact: They sang dozens of sings about surfing, but only the drummer, Dennis Wilson, had ever surfed.
As far as I'm aware, Bruce does also
Brian surfed once with Dan Ackroyd and Jim Belushi.
And hung out with Charles Manson

"Sweet Little Sixteen" is a great song and so is this one.
Thanks for setting the reactors and others straight on that...they wouldn't realize it.
Ha ha, it kinds of reminds me of the school concert show in Back To The Future, where Michael J. Fox plays Chuck Berry.

The "surf guitar" sound was created by guitarist Dick Dale and was influential on The Beach Boys and on Jan & Dean.
First warm day of spring you had to roll down the car windows and put the Beach Boys in the 8 track and cruise...gave you hope summer was going to be soon!!
I already heard this song......when it was called "Sweet Little Sixteen".
I spent a good amount of time in S. Calif in the 60's and 70's and I will never be able to count the number of times I've heard their songs
The Beach Boys are Thee Sound of Summer
You know you're good when you create a new music genre and influence the Beatles.
Sounds like they influenced Chuck Berry too /s.
@@woedan48 I believe Chuck was a bit earlier, but that didn't mean he didn't dig 'em and used some of their stylings.
Can't beat the beach boys as summer cruising music.Nobody better!
You need to understand that these are clips from TV show appearances. Not a concert. Bands would lip sync to their records. Great tune though!
Lex wanted to let go but something held her back.
Decorum used to matter but unfortunately is hasn't in quite a while, hope it makes a comeback soon. The Beach Boys were a marvelous band to jam too. Roll down the windows, drop the top and crank it up.
When I was a kid I always loved that line, "Tell the teacher we're surfin."
Watching you 2 discover old music and making it new again is great. I grew up listening to these guys cause my dad was a fan . I love it even today. Keep digging , you will like these guys more and more. Its fun....dont read so much into it just dance and have fun :)
For me "Pet Sounds" is a top album. Rock on Brad & Lex
“ Pacific Palisades “ I think that’s here in Cali close to Santa Monica pier… love that ❤️🔥
You were watching the TV show "SHINDIG" one dance shows aired during the 60's thats why everyone was dancing.
I saw the original (before Dennis's death) Beach Boys in Nanaimo B.C. July? 1982. Rail opened for them.
This was an appearance on a TV show...and those are hired Dancers!
Great song to say goodbye this Summer! 🌞 🏖
There are soooo many great Beach Boys songs but my two faves are Don't Worry Baby and Barbara Ann - highly recommend you check out the studio versions of both!!
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
My mum & dad watched them live at Wembley UK back in the day
Growing up in the San Fernando Valley and in high school.
Baseball, Hot dogs, Apple pie, Chevrolet's, and The Beach Boys. It doesn't get any more American than this.
This song was written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and Chuck Berry.. This was not a music video. Its a clip from a television show.
IN MY ROOM,
HELP ME, RHONDA,
& GOD ONLY KNOWS are great follow-ups to this song. Enjoy.
That was a 60s dance you were laughing at near the end :-) This was likely from a TV show and the people on the towels were actors/dancers.
Not sure how many people know this but Beach Boys lifted this from Chuck Berry's
"Sweet Little Sixteen".
It's note for note identical.
Every time I hear this song it reminds of this nut I saw doing a headstand on top of a van whilst being driven
Love the fact you like the 60’s beach vibe.❤
I love how Brad and Lex are growing into pros.
This was from the early 60’s, in a studio. Things were so innocent then. Times have changed.
Surfer girl was my favorite for the great harmony.
It was recorded when it was more about the music than the lights and explosions.
Santa Cruz- my hometown Santa Cruz is in this song 💗 Of course The Beach Boys were popular with us Cruzers, especially this song. Hang Ten 🤙
As a santa cruz local as well, I only found out that they said our city when I was in Jr high. I grew up hearing this song without knowing.
The Beach Boys have a bunch of great and fun songs. I agree with the comment for "Help Me Rhonda" as well as many others. It's just too bad they never grew up to become beach men-lol.
only one of those blokes surfed. Dennis and those birds he encountered. Wowzers
Yes it was a early music video.
Almost all the groups made them starting in the 50's
The video is a composite of 2 videos. In the first one, neighbor Dave Marx is playing rhythm guitar. In the second, cousin Al Jardine replaces him.
The first music videos were probably late 50s to early 60s. Just check out "Mr Lonely" by Bobby Vinton, or Elvis's Jailhouse Rock. I think the 80s was when they became more mainstream, due to MTV.
Actually, I think that we didn't rush the stage back then (, like the 70's for me) is Because we were TOO High....LMAO! 🍞🌹🌹......Love you Two!!!
Lex is the prettiest little thing. Love to teach her to surf 😂
My Momma loved The Beach Boys - she named me after their other big hit.💙
Barbara Ann?!
Check out "California Dreaming". Very good cover of the original.
Coming soon to a beach near you, Pop-Up Beach Parties with Brad & Lex!
