I think these look fantastic. I've seen a bit of sniffiness and snobbery from the online community about them but personally, if I still owned a Saturn I would have loved to mod it this way.
I don't think they use broken shell consoles to make them, I just don't see how there could be so many broken shells out there. It's likely that they destroy perfectly usable Saturns to make those things. I think it's a pity, leave them Saturns alone.
Sounds like gatekeeping to me. Saturn is too prohibitively expensive to collect for and physical media and the drives that read it are going to die sooner or later. So I think the scene can live without original Saturn hardware and enjoy it this way instead. Hardware purists are so annoying. Clutch your pearls all you want. Letting people have an affordable way to enjoy Saturn is a net positive.
I do plan on picking 1 of these up ever since i found out about em. I do own a original but it would be nice to own 1 specifically for the saroo cart. And i might as well get the package that comes with the cart since i dont own a saroo cart. Ive been using a cart that lets me play backups on my saturn 🤷♂️ ONLY thing i wish is that they used US bios. i grew up with that start up not the japanese lol
The fact that Chinese resellers are butchering perfectly good Saturn consoles that are serviceable is disgusting. I’ve seen photos of the piles of shells, CD-Rom drives and PSU boards that are left when these FrankenSaturn’s are built. You don’t need to butcher a Saturn to use Saroo. You can replace a faulty CD-Rom drive with a Fenrir, you can recap the PSU board or replace it with a Pico PSU variant … these things are absolutely pointless and are robbing future gamers/collectors of genuine Saturn consoles to experience. Some have labelled those who speak out against these things as “gatekeepers”, but it’s anything of the sort … people go on and on about video game preservation, yet they focus on the software and totally forget about the preservation of hardware, which is just as important; if not more so.
i mean if the cable is still there you can also use it to add a GDEMU and considering a GDEMU is very much small in size its just a small board with an SD card, you can fit it in there and it could work, cuz the saroo has its own problems with some 4mb games like one of the samurai showdown games. but am happy they left it inside
Im assuming you mean the RHEA/Phoebe? The GDEMU is for the Dreamcast. Just to clarify as I would hate to see someone buy the GDEMU to try and install in a Saturn...
Yo Wicked! Have you tried installing a V-CD card expansion in one of these yet? Looks like it would still fit. There are Japanese games that can use it for high-quality FMVs 😎👍
@WickedGamerCollector - 👍. Def a good topic to cover. The Saturn V-CD card jungle. I went with the Victor V3. There is Victor, Hitachi, and more brands + revisions to choose from! V-CD cards for the Saturn can get pricey, too.
*These things look AWESOME!* No doubt there are countless Saturns out there in beat up cases, and faulty disc drives. This breaths NEW Life into those consoles. Are these Saturn boards recapped though? Edit: If i were you, i'd undo that top panel, reach in and disconnect that lone internal wire that you won't be using. For the sake of that CLEAN look.
What's the best HD solution for the Sega Saturn? I've found that S-Video gives me a more than adequate picture on this system, but there has got to be better options for more modern televisions which don't typically have S-Video ports.
So that's a VA15 board, meaning most likely a Skeleton or Derby Saturn was destroyed for this. Even worse it looks like they cut the PSU pins off so even if you wanted to this couldn't be put back in a stock case and work anymore. On top of that the place they put the power port prevents the Video CD card or an ODE like the Satiator from being used. Honestly there's no reason to buy these slim consoles. You can easily get a Japanese Saturn for less than what you'd pay for these.
Ur right...I should have gotten Japan Saturn before I got this. I need to buy new controller and video cords. Didn't read the pine print but looking back buying Japan Saturn is better lol
Dont think i really like the idea of having the saturn guts visible like that , Pitty they couldn't preserve the original case , Also the bios boot screen is better on the UK ver rather than that kinda "screeching cat" style sound 😀
But you CAN preserve an original case. You just buy an original Saturn and play the cartridge in it. These boards are completely pointless AAND Hella ugly!

I've watched a few of your vids (enjoyed the racing wheel ones) and you seem to be having fun with what you're doing, which is great to see. Nothing personal, but I do have to give a big thumbs down on the Saturn "mini." Saroo is a solid alternative to expensive ODEs but there is no reason to get a butchered Saturn. It doesn't have a smaller footprint so calling it a mini doesn't work, and the power supply modification is problematic. Plus that shell looks awful. I can't endorse or abide any shop that destroys and irrevocably modifies classic hardware for no good reason except to make a cheap buck.
@@WickedGamerCollector And to correct you on something, that Pink variat made specially for the Sakura Wars fans, and if you don't know what Sakura Wars is, you actually should play it with the fan-translation, it's great!
I just had a thought. Does the Satiator fit in there? You would probably have to take the top off but it looks like the connector is still there on the board. While were at it. Would the TerraOnion MODE still work?
It won't fit. Neither will the Video CD card. They put the power supply cable in that spot. They've also blocked the Comm port so you can't use the Taisen Cable, floppy dirve, etc. if you have those.
Please stop supporting these. We have no idea if they are tearing up working or broken Saturns. These limit the functionality of a Saturn motherboard to the weakest ODE solution while taking away other stock features. Plus, it would cost less to just buy a Saturn and Saroo. Call it snobbery or whatever, but my point stands. These are trash.
I'm sure there are countless beat-up and broken disc-drive Saturn consoles out there just sitting in storage, rotting, that nobody wants. The actual boards inside many them might be Perfectly functional. So this is an awesome way to 'restore' those consoles back to their former glory.
@@Gametester110-qf8vs They're most likely just buying cheap systems on Yahoo Auctions and butchering them. Many consoles listed there as "junk" are still 100% working fine, the seller just can't test them so they list them as "junk".
