  • The Saroo is a drive emulation device that uses the expansion cart slot on the top of the machine.
But is this cheaper alternative any good, and does it have any down sides?
    Lets find out.
I believe this is the official store; www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...

That's a really interesting cartridge. Its the sort of thing that would really encourage me to get a Saturn. As I did not fancy having to fix a knackered cd-drive, or add boards to emulate the cd-drives etc, as I don't have the time needed to get round to doing that with console stuff. So it would just end up in my when I get time pile, and it would never make it to the top.

It is much easier then trying to fit a Fenrir, but compatibility does suffer.

any reference to emulation in this instance is to the drive, typically these are called "ODE".

This is more relevant to the Saroo as it actually uses its own drive software, which is why its faster then the other options.

Only games I ran into that had issues with it so far are games that have issues with other ODE setups also, like the Time Gal/Road Avenger release. turns out there is a new firmware that came out yesterday and this was in the release notes:
Supports the function of changing disks in the game. The directory names of multiple games are required to differ by only one number.
Assume that the game xxxxx has two disks and the directory name is
      [xxxxxxxDisc 1xx]
      [xxxxxxxDisc 2xx]
Make sure that the two directories differ by only one number.
Write the following content in saroocfg.txt:
      [Game-ID]
        multi_disc = "Disc"
In this way, Firm can know the name of the next disk based on the current Disc.
When the game displays the prompt to change the disk, press the SD card to let it pop out, and then press the SD card again to complete the disk replacement.

Note: The "Pal Machine" is just normally restricted to 50hz. It is fully capable of running games at 60hz and can even be modified to run Pal or NTSC games at 60hz with it's stock hardware. Consider the machine to be a 21 pin NTSC Saturn with an odd region restriction that can be worked around.

@@GouldFishOnGames I’ll eventually get a saroo due to my fascination with the Saturn as a whole . I just feel if a disc drive is operating and running for something as old as it can be , might as well utilize it as much as you can . That’s usually the first thing that goes if it’s not the power supply within a console and we have innovations for most consoles now to address either one of those instances. The ram slot too on Saturns are finicky and as shockingly amazing as it is to use a bus through there , it can be hindered by many potential issues too . I have a feeling the Saroo overtime will be perfected and make a lot of consoles / console owners keep their Saturns alive without the knowledge or will power to swap out a disc drive or cough up the money for a video card back door. I enjoyed this video particularly on the Saroo a lot btw
