Gen 1 is the definition of rushed game lol

"Blaine has what's called good AI"
Also Blaine: Full HP Growlithe? Better use a potion!
"Good" ai
It’s named “good ai” sarcastically
For those wondering, this kind of things happen because in Gen 1 the AI knows what you selected and how it will play out before choosing the move. So it is able to know that you'll hit and how much HP it will have left, leading to seemingly retroactive potions.
It cracks me up that it's easier to beat the entire game with just a Poliwag than it is to beat it with a Moltres
Pokemon makers new this..
That's why poliwag is the first thing you see in Pokemon snap
Poliwag/Poliwhirl/Poliwrath are underappreciated. Poliwhirl is my favorite pokemon and I always have space for him on a team.
@@Gatorade69 i used to have a Golem in team this pokemon is so underrated too. Insane movepool and excellent defense statistics a pretty nice counter to the 100% crit Persian
Poliwag gets access to more, better, moves. And it does so faster than Moltres can. Moltres is stuck with Peck and Fire Spin until level FIFTY ONE! And only has Fire-, Flying-, and Normal- type moves.
@@WazaYTB Golem was neck and neck with Rhydon as two of the best defensive monsters in competitive in Gen1. What are you talking about?

@@Jrose11 Oooh that's baaaad.
But you get your choice of topping .....
"How fast can you beat Pokemon Red/Blue with just a Gengar?"
Pretty fast. Gengar is my all-time favorite Pokemon for a reason, and it's this game. Ran through the entire game with just an Alakazam and Gengar once, was ez pz.
Alakazam and Gengar are just downright broken in Gen 1, and it's glorious. They're the two most broken examples of two already broken types in Gen 1, Psychic and Ghost.
Good video, liked this one.
For the bide confusion at 2:20, this is taken from bulbapedia:
“The damage received during the period is counted as equal to the last amount of damage done. The last amount of damage done will include crash damage, an opponent's self-inflicted confusion damage, and the full damage absorbed by a substitute. Additionally, if the opponent does not use an attack that misses, the last amount of damage done will not be reset, effectively resulting in damage done during the previous turn also being counted as damage done during that turn.”
So, you're saying:
* 9 damage done
* Confuse ray missed (another 9 dmg calc'd)
* Bide returns 2x (9+9) // 36dmg?
Essentially that initial night shade will count for every turn when the “last damage done” is not reset”. So i guess the optimal strategy once he had already used bide prior to your night shade, would be to use lick? Or at least use lick once, then confuse ray. That way the most recent damage would be from lick, and then you can confuse it.
This weird status of the last damage dealt causes a lotttttt of fun stuff with counter as well. Counter can even counter itself. You can counter hyper beam during its recharge turn if you outspeed, etc.
Something fun to do if you have, say a chansey vs a tauros (any faster hyper beam user really). Use thunderwave to paralyze it on the same turn it uses hyper beam, then use counter.
Heres another dumb, but unrelated mechanic. If a pokemon that has yet to recharge is target by a sleep move, it is put to sleep no matter what. As in the accuracy check is bypassed, and its current status is overridden. Using the same example above, paralyze the opponent on the same turn hyper beam is used against you. Then use sing, and tauros will be put to sleep, even though it was paralyzed. This is risky though because it gets rid of the recharge, meaning tauros will be ready to attack next turn if it gets a first-turn wake. HOWEVER, thanks to more gen 1 fun, the tauros will still be slower because the paralysis speed drop persists until status healing item is used on it or it switches out.
Ok sorry, done ranting :p
@@MsCravenMoorehead yes, according to that passage haha. Bide is never used competitively, so i dont have any actual experience with it
@@blah9500 And you didn't even went on how crazy Substitute and Items are.
@@MsCravenMoorehead it doubles the damage it took, so yes. That's basically exactly what he's saying since it counts confuse ray (items too) as an additional hit.

Mahdrybreads or jroses one
@@gmk9321 what do you think.
@@gmk9321 probably the better one aka jrose one
Same here!
That's ....... Spooky 🤣😂
(Ghosts are spooky)
Great run. By the way, you've uncovered the Gen 1 Bide Glitch. ANY time a non-accuracy action is taken while under Bide from EITHER side, it doubles the Bide counter.
So bide is one of the best moves against Agatha?
I'm very interested in how a Snorlax run would turn out. It starts out with amnesia at level 1, so once you beat Brock you have a move that increases both your attack AND special due to the badge boost glitch. Could make for a very fun run.
I tried it, and was murdered by Brock at minimum battles. Plus, Snorlax is more of a wall than a sweeper normally, so while I think he'd get through a lot of battles on the first try, I'm not sure how fast he would be.
@@cubedmelons876 I definitely don't think he'll be anywhere near the fastest, mostly due to his terrible speed stat, but I just think it would be a fun run regardless. That said, I'm surprised Snorlax had that rough of a time with brock. It starts off with headbutt, which even despite not being very effective, is a decently powerful STAB move, and I feel like rest should let you stall them out pretty well even if it might be agonizingly slow.
@@TheBlueWizzrobe Sadly, a level 6 Snorlax is not gonna do much damage against a Geodude 5 levels higher, even with Headbutt. And with the level difference, Geodude actually does a lot of damage.
@@cubedmelons876not a level 7 or 8 snorlax?
Ugh, jrose you keep getting better at these... the editing is getting sharper, the little interjection in the beginning was great...

Jrose11: "Can anyone dethrone mewtwo?"
Me: Looks suspiciously at Tauros.
Tauros is good. It can learn a lot of great TMs. Too bad the learnset is garbage. Only normal moves up until Surge. Early game will be slow. No way it'll beat Mewtwo.
@@slippy318 i agree, if Tauros started with earthquake it could blow through the game, but mewtwo is just untouchable with psycic and confusion early game. so much is weak to special not to mention psycic type. we need to see what else has a good starting moveset but i doubt anything even will come close to it. honestly it is a contest for how close one can get to mewtwo
@@slippy318 I'm looking at his level learnset, and it's not too great early on for brock, tbh. He'd be as good I'm the late game because of his learnset are serviceable special stat. I'm looking through them all to guess which would compete with m2.
Probably Nidoking? It is what speedrunners use to achieve runs of under 2 hours. It grows respectably faster than Mewtwo, has access to a vast array of TMs, and starts with Thrash.
From some quick searching, my list of contenders:
Nidoking
Victreebell
Dugtrio
Poliwrath
Gyarados
Tauros
All these have good early game options (quickly getting through brock is pretty important) and have some combo of stats, boosting moves (say it with me...), coverage, positive critical matchups, etc.
Honestly, gyarados is the top contender. Starting with hydro pump and dragon rage is preeeeetty good.
I did not know how much I needed to hear Jrose11 Count saying “Oh critical hit!”
'I can't lose against Lance'
I mean you technically can with Confusion RNG from Supersonic, you just need to hit yourself 8 times,

2:34 well the onix didn’t hurt itself in confusion, so that shouldn’t add in. I am wondering if it has to do with onyx’s level possibly coming into play in some way because of nightshade’s play off level.

This video helps show how good the Gastly run was. It might have taken longer time wise, but only 2 levels higher than Gengar is still pretty impressive. This run was pretty fun to watch too.
The fact that Gengar is not a legendary puts it higher in pokemon amazingness than Mewtwo. Mewtwo is suppose to be great stat pokemon with few to no weakness, but the fact Gengar was able to come just shy of Mewtwo's time makes it far superior in my book

Just got off work and there is a new Jrose video. Nice!!! Made my day!
I’m always so happy when a new one of these get uploaded
Nidoking! There is a reason why the speedrunners holds Nidoking in high praise
He’s not that good without Items. Starmie is faster, better Special and better Moves.
Well it's probably mostly because you can get him so early
@G6 Liara speedrunners like nidoking because it evolves very early in the game(a fully evolved non bug type by the time you get to mount moon), has a great move pool, and of course the X accuracy + horn drill exploit(X accuracy ensures the next attack won't miss and horn drill is a one hit knock out move)
I'd like to see nidoking and also alakazam. It has lower stats than mewtwo and starts with confusion instead of psychic but levels a lot faster. Would be cool to see if the levels over take the base for a faster time
