I have a year old male marble halfmoon betta named "Rambo", for quite awhile now his tail fin has been ripping over and over again. It has gotten to the point where his tail fin has completely disappeared and its only down to the base of it. At this point in time, an inch and a half of his tail fin has grown back in the time span of 2 months. Ive been searching online for answers to why his tail would be ripping at the volume it is but I have been unsuccessful with answers. Some facts... -He has never had Fin Rot, a fungal infection or any other disease -He is fed an nutritional diet of pellets, blood worms and cooked peas -He is kept in a 10 gallon bare bottom aquarium that is to himself with silk artifical plants and a buddah statue with no sharp edges -I do 25% water changes every four days, which includes removing the little amount of accumulated algae growth -There is a sponge filter in the far back left corner of his tank to filter his tank instead of a hang on filter, to ensure there is no major flow rate -The Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia and PH levels are always checked before and after water changes to ensure the water is safe -He is always very active around his tank I am looking for advice on how I could promote tail growth...
Katie Kat . Hi, sorry to hear you're having problems with your betta. The best thing to treat fin damage (if it isn't deseased) is clean water and lots of it. Do you think your fish could be mutilating his own tail? Some fish fin bite even when there's no apparent reason for it. From what you have said you have a wonderful set up for him so there's nothing obvious that could cause the stress or boredom that can lead to fin biting. The only thing I can think of (this is a long shot), is you mentioned your tank is barebottomed. Is there any chance he can see his own reflection and is being stressed by that? Just a thought. I hope Rambo improves and good luck with him.
Thank you for responding! I initially thought it could of been him seeing his reflection too but I had gravel down before and his tail was still turning out the sameway even with the same tank set up. I recently read up on tail biting tho and came across a blog that explained genetics, apparently with high bred stock of bettafish you can get tail biting passed down through their genes which I never knew but if true it would make sense being I bought my bettafish from an online breeder in Asia.
When I got my first two bettas I didn't do any research and I kinda just grabbed things that said they were good for bettas... around half a year later, my two were doing great and i had started upgrading the tank a lot and did a bunch more research and now i have five bettas, two 5 gallon split tanks and one 3 gallon. They all have 2 silk plants and suction cup plants that stick to the sides and top. I have 5 different jars of betta food all labeled and an entire closet full of extra supplies I might need...😂 I went from being lonely and a blank room to having 5 bettas and a large 10 gallon tank within a year. Worst part is I want to get more bettas because I love them so much😂😭
I would recommend Prime water condition as it 100% removes everything from tap water. While other conditions dont remove everything that effects the fish.
I've owned bettas for many years so I thought I'd give you any advice I had solely based on what you showed in the video 😊 1. Flake food probably isn't the best, some betta owners use it as a last resort if their betta isn't eating, some yet few bettas only prefer flakes. Pellets are much better, a cleaner option, and most bettas are used to eating them. Just make sure they are small pellets, even micro pellets for tropical fish are great for their small mouths! (try omega one brand) also their stomach is only around the size of their eyeball so keep that in mind when feeding them to not overfeed! (usually 4-5 pellets is good, they expand when in water too) you can also fast them one day a week to prevent over feeding or if they seem bloated due to food consumption. 2. Not sure if you already have these things but a filter (might already come with your tank) is a must! Make sure it's low flow and doesn't push your betta around as they aren't the best swimmers and are used to mostly still water in the wild. And a heater is also a BIG MUST! This ensures the water is between 78-80 degrees at all times and is optimal for your bettas' overall health and longevity. Other than those things, weekly water changes of 25-50% of the water is all you really need to do to maintain a healthy Betta Fish 👍🏽💖 Aquarium salt is good to have on hand as well for things like fin rot, or fin biting. Good luck with fish keeping!
Also, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp etc can be found at Petco, they should have a freezer near the fish section! Sorry just noticed you bought a heater lol 😂 Btw, love that you got a 5 gallon for him!! 💕
Hey! I'm on my way to become a huge betta enthusiast. I would recommend you get some moss balls, they do great with betas as well as catappa leaves, they will stain your water but only because they release some minerals that are essential for you betta, you can get them at amazon. You can also get mineral balls, they're like small mineral pearls that also help your betta, something helpful as well to keep their fins in good shape is aquarium salt, you can get it from petsmart of petco and follow very carefully the instruction, you don't want the water be too salty for a freshwater fish. Remember to do water changes every week taking out 20 to 25% of the water and replacing it with new conditioned water. You could as well get a small fish that will help you cleaning the inside of the aquarium (snails work as well) but it has to be small enough that it won't bother the betta so around 4 inch max and it also will depend on your beta's personality, I have 2 corydoras with my betta and he does just fine but probably is because my betta is a sweet heart and doesn't fight that much. Corydoras don't clean the glass but they do eat the food that falls on the bottom so the chances of you tank being dirty due to overdose of food will be low. And last thing, for life plants it is nice to instead of having normal gravel, to get some substrate so it helps the plant grow due to its minerals, just make sure you rinse it until the water is clean and then put it on your tank. I hope this helps!
He is so cute! Im setting up a divided tank soon, but for now all my bettas are in bowls with clean water. Bettas are so fun and addicting! Welcome to the fish keeping hobby! You off to a great start
I know I’m supposed to leave a comment about Bettas, but I heard you say how you keep lumos at 80 degrees. I purchased a thermostat for my crested geckos lamp, and it’s so relieving knowing I won’t over/under heat his tank☺️
Is it very important to get a filter for a five gallon tank? I have a betta fry in there, his name is Milo. I just thought maybe i'd do a 30% water change every few days instead. I do want to get a filter but I don't have the money for it at the moment.
i just started breeding bettas last february 2018, i have 2 batches so far and 1st one are like adults now! bettas are so addicting! i hope everything works out for you, keep up your awesome videos Lisa!
IMPORTANT: the live plant you got, anubias is so cool! You dont need to put it into the substrate. You can anchor or glue it onto decorations and wood. You could super glue it onto the octopus and it will look sick!!!!
I know this is really late but flakes are just fillers for the fish and pellets are recommended. Soak the pellets before feeding for at least 10 minutes and then feed 2-3 for each betta
I’m glad you did your research. Btw the test kits are generally unnecessary for only one betta fish. Being relatively hardy, bettas really only need water tests if they have a noticeable illness (i.e. ich, fin rot, low energy.) If you do get multiple fish however, a water test once a month is good.
I bought my blue beta fish from Pets Mart and I’ve had him for 3 years! I wash the basic glass bowl every couple months when the water gets to half, I don’t use any special water, I don’t put any extra stuff or decorations in the water, just cuz they already make the water so dirty! I feed him the brown pellets! I add a dime size of the water conditioner it’s water every time I wash the bowl and add just water from the bathtub! So far, mine is doing good! I keep him on our kitchen counter, and Named him Neptune after the planet cuz he’s blue! Good luck! They’re great fish!
Hey Alyssa! First off beautiful fish! Pellets are Betta than flakes as flakes can cause bloat. I'd also highly recommend the api master test kit, it's much easier than buying them separately. Good luck! So far you're doing great:)
you should try and get him omega one betta buffet pellets and when you feed pellets, get the cup the you got your fish in, put water in it, and soak the pellets for a few mins because dry pellets will expand inside his belly and it can cause bloating, so this makes the pellets expand in the water. And also try and feed him frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms are better than freeze dried ones because those may also cause constipation and bloating. Keep his tank 76-80 degrees farenheit. 78 is a perfect temperature.
I absolutely love the fish videos you make!! People are so rude and it makes me sad to hear they are being mean smh. I love your fish videos and your channel :)
A variety of food is a great way to keep your Betta happy. I personally love feeding frozen foods, especially bloodworms. Other foods include pellets, I love the Hikari Betta Bio Gold, freeze dried brine shrimp and freeze dried Bloodworms. People within the community suggest allowing a certain time in the day to exercising your Betta, using a mirror and holding it up to the tank and letting him flare. 2 minutes is usually enough as too much flaring can hurt them and stress them out. Can lead to fin blow outs. Interact with him lots, they're very interactive little guys and get an attachment to us. Switch up the tank now and again to keep him interested. Water changes are every aquarists best friend. Also, get yourself on forums like Aquarium Advice or Fishlore, post any questions and you'll get great definitive answers. Happy fishkeeping 🐠
For my betta fish I feed them the pellets because that is just better for them but just wanted to put that out there! I have only had betta fish do 7 years though
Beautiful boy, I rescue mine from Walmart because majority of them have fin rot and will eventually die, ive had mine for about a year and a half. I love Bettas so much❤️ and im soooo happy you didnt get a 1 gallon tank, you’ll be a great betta mom😁 oh try not to focus on feeding him the shrimp or blood worms because bettas can get spoiled and wont eat anything but shrimp or blood worms
Marlene Reyes I rescue mine from Wal-Mart too. I have a friend that works there and they don't even feed the beta fish there. Every time I go there i find at least one That's dead.
Catherine Wilson i used to buy food flakes and feed them cause i know they didnt feed them, its so sad they capture these beautiful fish just to leave them to die :(
Please don't buy pets from irresponsible sources. You're only proving to the sellers that if they bring in these animals they will get purchased. I know it feels like you're saving them but you're just freeing up space for them to bring in more fish that will get sick. They will stop selling sick fish when people stop buying them.
Also, i think your plants will do fine. They dont really need a ton of light and as long as they have fish poop and uneaten food(ammonia) they will thrive
Also bettas are a little lazy, so dont get scared if you dont see your betta that active. I have never had an active betta unless it was a plakat(bettas with short fins). You could get your betta some tank mates if you want. In that size thank, though, i would only do some freshwater shrimp or snails. From my experience, if bettas have tank mates, they will be much more active and (in some cases happier). Some bettas have gotten stressed for no reason, and when the owners gave those bettas some "friends" they got much happier. There is a 50/50 chance that the betta will except tankmates. Good luck! I named all my bettas anime names (my newest male is named takisumi.
Alyssa Nicole Just be prepared for a bigger bioload :). Snails produce a lot of waste 😆 So more frequent water changes might be needed, and think about introducing more food appropriated towards snails, as a newer tank may not fully be able to support two snails on its own till the system is more cycled and set up :)! Best of luck!
You should get some shrimp or snails to put in the tank with him. African dwarf frogs are good with bettas too! I have a lot of betta experience and he should do fine with them. Shrimp is a iffy but frogs and snails would be fine with him.
Make sure your fish stays fairly warm. I bought my little boy a betta fish and it unfortunately got too cold in the house and he froze to death. We only had him for 2 days. So hopefully you have a better experience than we did. Good luck!
Hey Alissa. I'd like to give you a few tips to care for your betta... 1. Use Seachem Prime water conditioner- it's ranges from $4-10 and lasts you a LONG TIME. 2 drops are used per gallon of water. Compared to API that needs 5ml per 10 gallons. Prime is much more cost effective and removes ammonia, etc. It's the best! 2. Soak freeze dried foods before feeding them to avoid constipation/swim bladder disorder 3. Feed a variety of high quality foods! Pellets should have a minimum of 40% protein. I do not recommend flakes- too many bettas have gotten swim bladder disorder because of it. 4. Test your water every 2-4 weeks to make sure the parameters are on point. You should have 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, and no more than 20ppm of nitrate. I highly recommend the API freshwater master test kit (it's $23 on amazon right now- usually $35!) it tests ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph! It allegedly tests 800 tests-but all I know is I've had mine for 3 years and have 3 tanks. 💁 The shelf life is very long on them. 4. Checkout Lifewithpets episode series on betta care/setup here on YT! It's extremely helpful. I also recommend Creativepetkeeping. They're both very experienced betta owners.
Hi, you should also buy the nitrite API kit because on smaller and new aquariums the levels can be pretty high and it is really harmfull to the fish even more than the amonia levels. Also, before you put the fish in the aquarium you should let the sistem get stable so that the "good bacterias" can grow, that will help stable the levels of nitrite and amonia. when cleaning the aquarium don't switch all the water only like 40% depending on the nitrite levels... Loved this video and Bettas are so cute ^^
When you buy top fin live plants, you want to be sure to read on the package of its for aquariums or for terrariums. Terrarium plant die quickly in an aquarium.
I just got my betta last night I’ve named him Wraith cause he looks like a ghost although today he has a little minty color to him. Getting some live plants this weekend and thanks to you I’ll be getting the anubias
I used to have a betta fish when i was younger! they're such fascinating fish, i love them 💕 Did you touch up your book tattoo by the way? It looks a lot darker :)
Sounds like you did some research! Your going to be a great fish keeper if you keep it up! I recommend dosing seachem prime every day till your tank finishes cycling as it nullifies ammonia, nitrites and nitrates while the good bacteria get a chance to bloom and balance the tank out. Subscribing just to see how you get on with your betta!
Alyssa Nicole That's very odd.. I've never heard of anyone having that problem! Overfeeding is more likely to make your tank dirty, or too much light (algae bloom) live plants should only really be planted in an established tank, but in saying that live plants generally 'melt' - this occurs when an emersed grown plant then has to adjust to submerged growth. Hope that helps!
Kidreviewsandfun 2 first off, does* second, bettas like to be able to blend in with their surroundings. I've had bettas my entire life, I've learned that they more comfortable when they can blend in.
Thëriziino also I didn't say they had to be the same color as the betta i meant the rocks and plants being similar colors with pops of color that the beta can blend with.
Some tips: First those flakes are not the best they contain a lot of "meals" and many bettas aren't fans of flake foods. I would recommend the Omega One betta pellets or mini pellets. That food is made using real fish not fish meals. The net is okay, many people dont like nets because theyre stressful for the fish but I personally use one because in my eyes its more stressful for the fish to chase them around with a cup than to quickly scoop them with a net. Just be very careful not to damage fins when using the net. Im not sure if that tank has a filter but if it doesnt or if the filter it has is too strong for your betta then I would recommend a sponge filter. You can buy one or diy one (i did mine diy because i already owned most of the materials). These are great because you can buy a flow control valve and control how strong the filter is. I hope this was helpful, goodluck!
Hey Alyssa! Beautiful fish btw! But, I recommend the Omega One (like the brine shrimp you had) Betta Pellets because it has more natural ingredients and Bettas are carnivorous and a tropical fish food is more “vegetable” based. (I know this is late) ;(
I have a butterfly betta I've had him for like 3 years now I did have two but one did die after about a year and a half bettas dont live very long usually and many have genetic diseases I beieve but they blow bubbles when happy they make a lot of noise somehow but avoid fake plants for bettas because theyre fins are very fragile and will get cut on them I didn't know that until after my betta scratched his fin but they do need something besides rocks in their bowl just a little info for everyone
It's funny how in South east Asia . We still refer them as fighthing fish. If you ask for Betta fish . The fish store workers will look very confused lol
I have a 2 beta fish and they have a divider between them one day I went I my room and they were fighting. Somehow they got into the same side and I thought he died he is a survivor and I love him
Hi please get some indian almond leaf it is very good for betta fish because it lowers the ph of the water and also it eliminate ammonia and nitrate and also dont feed betta some flakes thanks but honestly I really Love yahh Video❤
U should get an African dwarf frog with ur betta they won’t fight but you have to make sure to get the food or he may trie to eat him pretty sure they eat sinking pellets
I love how you did your research prior to buying a fish, it really shows lol. Water changes should be once a week! or twice if it's really necessary :)
I'm so proud rn bcs tbh the most american/english speaking youtubers don't know or don't care about their betta fish and buy the shittiest things but damn like you bought a heater, black gravel, live plant and SILK fake plant and even water tests
Prime is better than API just don’t add to much (it won’t hurt your fish if you do it’s not that big of a deal) it will make bubble on top of your water which is unattractive sense you only have a 5 gallon thing I would add one thread of prime you get your moneys worth with prime just some friendly advice :)
I'd recommend learning about the nitrogen cycle which is basically how you cycle your tank. Also you got very good quality food and a great tank. Good good keep it up!

You could do a treatment of aquarium salt, with or without some other medication (like lifeguard for example) along with daily 100% water changes.

i havent tried aquarium salt but I do put in stress guard at the beginning of each month
well i'd definitely suggest the aq salt! I've been using it for my betta's fin rot and it's a pretty common treatment. 1 tsp per gallon of water :)
Finally a fish owner who does her research before jumping into buying a fish 😂❤️❤️❤️
Mielie Mouse that’s what I’m doing but vids are interesting
Where?

Alyssa Nicole awesome! I'm glad! You're a great betta mom already haha 😂
did you buy the little thermometer separately or did it come with the tank?
0:47 EXACTLY. This is the first video I have watched from your channel and I'm subscribing because you said that haha
I would recommend getting the omega one pellets for your Betta, as freeze dried stuff can cause bloat
I’m glad you went all out for your little beta fish. He’s one little happy guy! Enjoy your little fin friend. He’s super gorgeous and handsome!

It’s better to get pre made water in the gallon because the conditioner can kill it faster
I love watching these kinds of videos and I just love watching your videos in general❤️
You should get some shrimp or snails to put in the tank with him. African dwarf frogs are good with bettas too! I have a lot of betta experience and he should do fine with them. Shrimp is a iffy but frogs and snails would be fine with him.
'If the fake plant died and I couldn't take care of it I got this silk plant...' 😂😂😂
The TetraBetta pellets might be a better option for food, just an idea though. Mine wouldn’t eat fish flakes :/
Get either ghost shrimp or mollys but make sure they're not brighter than the betta
OMG ITz Scopez!! The tank is too
Small for a community
Do pellets and also nets can damage fins so use a cup but overall great job!
Love it! I have a betta fish...do you know how old he is?
Alyssa Nicole I'm sorry
2. Soak freeze dried foods before feeding them to avoid constipation/swim bladder disorder
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this in a comment earlier, but usually male bettas need around 10 gallons
Thank you for the info. You have a good heart.
About the betta fish, you can buy the frozen bloodworms at you local fish store not pet store
I love ur animal videos 💖💖💖
Way to do your research! Can't wait to see how your betta does!
If you feed them flakes the tank will get dirty and need to be cleaned 2 a week also try pellets
I too started with a reptile, (ball python) and now I have a 100 and a 10 gallon tank
you can get a lot of fake plants from wal-mart and meijers ...i also got my houses and plants from ebay..aquarim salt will help also
i also had gold fish which are fresh water and they need that salt
Congrats on your little guy! 🐠💕
I love people that know what there doing
I just got my betta last night I’ve named him Wraith cause he looks like a ghost although today he has a little minty color to him. Getting some live plants this weekend and thanks to you I’ll be getting the anubias
Your room stays at 80 degrees?!?
I love that octopus! 😍
I love your shirt😍
I love your channel! I'm so happy I found you, please make more animal content
I just bought frozen bloodworms at petco they have a huge box for 6.99
I don’t know if you have a pet land but I get my frozen bloodworms from there. Also 😍😍😍 beautiful boy ❤️ I can’t wait to watch the other videos
I used to have a betta fish when i was younger! they're such fascinating fish, i love them 💕
Did you touch up your book tattoo by the way?
Hey just to let you know, pellets are way better for betta fish. Also they do way better when they have plants and rocks that are similar color
Also nets can damage fins so I use a laddle. And be careful feeding them snacks bc they will get spoiled and won't eat regular foods
Color of the decor dose not affect the fish at all
Kidreviewsandfun 2 first off, does* second, bettas like to be able to blend in with their surroundings. I've had bettas my entire life, I've learned that they more comfortable when they can blend in.
Thëriziino again I'm speaking from personal experience and knowledge from working at a pet store.
Thëriziino also I didn't say they had to be the same color as the betta i meant the rocks and plants being similar colors with pops of color that the beta can blend with.
Some tips:
First those flakes are not the best they contain a lot of "meals" and many bettas aren't fans of flake foods.
Looks like mine only difference is mine is a crowntail
Hey Alyssa! Beautiful fish btw! But, I recommend the Omega One (like the brine shrimp you had) Betta Pellets because it has more natural ingredients and Bettas are carnivorous and a tropical fish food is more “vegetable” based. (I know this is late) ;(
Post notifications on!! Love ya!!!💜💜💜
I've read that pellets are better for Bettas also :).
When’s part 2 of the stick and poke tattoo coming out?
Y did the box move
the flakes will make your tank really dirty I recommend you get omega one pellets
Yesssssssssssss another video ❤️
I have a butterfly betta I've had him for like 3 years now I did have two but one did die after about a year and a half bettas dont live very long usually and many have genetic diseases I beieve but they blow bubbles when happy they make a lot of noise somehow but avoid fake plants for bettas because theyre fins are very fragile and will get cut on them I didn't know that until after my betta scratched his fin but they do need something besides rocks in their bowl just a little info for everyone
My beta fish is cool mine was pink and it was the exact one but it died in 2 years
It's funny how in South east Asia . We still refer them as fighthing fish. If you ask for Betta fish . The fish store workers will look very confused lol
You did your research! Good on you XX
You don’t need the test kits you can use a filter
I have a 2 beta fish and they have a divider between them one day I went I my room and they were fighting. Somehow they got into the same side and I thought he died he is a survivor and I love him
Hi please get some indian almond leaf it is very good for betta fish because it lowers the ph of the water and also it eliminate ammonia and nitrate and also dont feed betta some flakes thanks but honestly I really Love yahh Video❤
LOVE YOUR SHIRT ❤️❤️❤️
Got mine from Petco half moon I named him blue
You can buy them at petco the frozen bloodworms
Yay another video 🌷💓
Can you leave the links? thanks xx 💙
Go to petco for frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp btw
U should get an African dwarf frog with ur betta they won’t fight but you have to make sure to get the food or he may trie to eat him pretty sure they eat sinking pellets
I love how you did your research prior to buying a fish, it really shows lol. Water changes should be once a week! or twice if it's really necessary :)
its betta dubbel t from betta splendens !
I'm so proud rn bcs tbh the most american/english speaking youtubers don't know or don't care about their betta fish and buy the shittiest things but damn like you bought a heater, black gravel, live plant and SILK fake plant and even water tests
Thank god someone who dose their research before buying!!😁😁
Prime is better than API just don’t add to much (it won’t hurt your fish if you do it’s not that big of a deal) it will make bubble on top of your water which is unattractive sense you only have a 5 gallon thing I would add one thread of prime you get your moneys worth with prime just some friendly advice :)
You should try out New Life Spectrum Betta Formula Food. Its a little more pricy, but its has all the nutrition they need.
I'd recommend learning about the nitrogen cycle which is basically how you cycle your tank. Also you got very good quality food and a great tank. Good good keep it up!
A heater is always a good thing your room temp can fluctuate .
Betta fish don’t need heaters but I have one in my tank a heater cases it is better for them
Alonna Miller they do need heaters, their lifespan will shorten otherwise
