    Episode 44
Deja Vu is one of the most unique games for the NES! Due to Nintendo's strict policies, very few mature games ever got made. Deja Vu features surprisingly dark film noir themes, the kind that you won't anywhere else on the system!
At its core, Deja Vu is a Point and Click adventure game similar to Maniac Mansion. Deja Vu uses a first person view, and was originally designed for black and white Macintosh computers.
So how did this game get from the Macintosh to the NES? What changes had to be made? In this very special episode of U Can Beat Video Games we'll not only learn all of this, and then dive deep into the gameplay... but we'll be able to compare every room from the NES game with the Macintosh original!
    * Tons of ITEM DATA! Which items are important, and which ones are junk!
    * How to find all of the ADDRESSES! Unlock every area!
*The SECRET to ALWAYS HITTING THE JACKPOT on the Slot Machines!
    * Where to find EVERY KEY, and what they're all used for!
*How to get rid of items you don't want, especially INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE!
    * Restore your memory! How to use the different medicines to get the results you need!
    * Where to find all of the different guns!
    * Find all three KEY PIECES OF EVIDENCE you'll need to clear you name!
    * A SECRET GLITCH that will allow you to go to locations you shouldn't be able to visit!
    * How to get past dangerous enemies like Alligators, Muggers AND MORE!
    Thanks for watching!

My older sister and I played this on NES when I was little, one of the few we played together. I remember being so excited every time we saw a new place where I could tell her to try punching and shooting everything, just to see what would happen. It was so great when we punched out the butler, and so disappointing how few people you could get away with shooting.

I'm so happy to see Deja Vu here! Playing this dark and moody game on the NES as a kid was wild. It was one of the few adult themed games and there was nothing else like it.

That Unsolved Mysteries theme in the intro gave me goosebumps! I didn't get a chance to actually watch that show as a kid because the music spooked me so much I would run to the tv and switch it off. It's definitely not *that* scary, but I clearly have a deep seated reflex triggered by that music.

Same here. I used to play this, Uninvited and Shadowgate at night. Back in the early 2000's, they didn't even have a decent walkthrough for Deja VU which made it more scary going from screen to screen without any help. Walkthrough and GameFAQs are useless now, because there's RUclips walkthroughs.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames Its rare, but in the game Deja Vu there is actually a second mugger that you didn't show off or mention (unrelated to the one you can punch 3 times before giving him the $20 bill). This mugger seems to be an extremely rare encounter and randomly appears in the back alley of the bar when you get off of the fire escape. When he shows up he wants all of your coins. Regardless of whether or not you give him the coins, he'll punch you in the face and temporarily knock you unconscious.

One tactic that attorneys commonly use is that they will never ever present evidence in a case where it makes the individual look guilty and they'll completely disregard it. It's not the same as lying, because no question was asked. Like the old saying goes, what mom doesn't know won't hurt her.

Probably thinking about this too much but... if someone was making youtube content along your chosen theme of "in-depth players guide", such a person could have selected much more standard choices with mainstream appeal and aimed for maximum channel growth. Instead your choices are what I can only assume is personal preference based on your own tastes or game playing history.
Not only that but even when tackling something that would be a massive project like this one, with multiple versions each with their own variations and changes to cover, you do not take the easy way out and genuinely take the time to go over everything when it would be so much easier to just show people the easiest way to reach the ending. Every game gets the same treatment and coverage that most would only reserve for their top 1 or 2 most beloved childhood favorites.
I guess my point is you are:
    absolutely nuts
absolutely going your own way, trends and algorithms be damned
absolutely deserving of all the likes and subs
absolutely a channel deserving of max respect
10/10 lad, dont let em change ya.

Wow, so much work to do a side by side of the NES and Mac versions, thank you for making this! I think your format is perfect for point and click games -- would love to see you give the same treatment to Shadowgate and Uninvited.

I really like that for the whole game you're getting more and more stressed about all the crimes we're committing, but then the moment we get a chance to steal Jon Sternwood's candy, you not only immediately take it, but scold the sleeping man with a hard-bitten detective voice. Like, that one petty theft was fine. Everything else tho, we're in trouble.

Loved this game as a kid! The best part of this game was the humor. It does a great job of making you feel like a lowlife loser in way over your head.

“You light up. The feeling of tobacco smoke courses up and down your throat.
      You’ll probably get cancer.
      You probably deserve to…”
While I’m not sure if this is the 1st or 2nd game, it’s kind of odd that it isn’t in the NES version, as smoking/cigarettes aren’t always removed, much like in Metal Gear.

This is such a wild coincidence. You put this out right at the same time me and my friend decided on a whim to play through this together. That's why I'm not watching it now. I gave up on throwing away items at the end. No matter what I trashed the cops still thought they had evidence on me. I'm not sure if it was a bug or if I'd left something in a drawer somewhere but I wasn't about to spend 30 minutes checking every container in the game lol. Thanks for uploading this, it was nice seeing the ending and I learned some stuff like that bullet bug!

Man, that outpatient surgery at Burger King sounded ROUGH. You should see what they do with McDonalds's eye exams. I still have burn marks...
I actually tried to comment on this back when the video was still new, but I played this a while back, gathered all the evidence, got rid of all the things that could tie me to the crime... except Gun 1. I couldn't discard it. I believe I messed up and forgot to shoot open Dr. Brody's file cabinet. And so I ended up taking the fall for Vickers and Sternwood. Thanks to your guide reminding me of it though, I feel like going back through soon and avenging my loss there.

Ok dude, you are so great! This is like 2 reviews in one! I love that you did both games and showed us the b&w mac version as well! I've never seen anyone else do that. I definately love both the graphics, and enjoy the interior design choices on the nes (so much orange!).
I've never really wanted to play the MacVenture series because I've never done point and click games before (and princess tomato seemed complicated the only time I saw it as a kid). But now I want to play this both ways!
Outside of this game, I'd been trying to remember what b&w mac games I played in elementary school besides Oregon trail, before they switched to colour power pc macs. All I can remember is KidPix (That dynamite sound blew my mind, also the only program like that I ever used) and choplifter at my dads office, but I'm sure there's more... I love when they introduced when the trash can icon bulged when there was stuff in it, after it went to colour, I wasn't into it really anymore. I really want someone to make a Linux Distro that uses the same graphics, but with all our modern conveniences!

LOL, my dentist's office actually is located above a bar, and does have an ancient chair like that :) Albeit, it also tilts back and is padded.
Back before anesthesia was fully allowed to be used by dentists, restraining chairs weren't uncommon, and in some regions it's been tightly regulated until fairly recently.
My dentist got her practice from her grandad, and her grandad had his restraining chairs since 1930. . . she kept one, but the only time I see it is in October, when they haul out the halloween decorations :)
