    Excellent video. I just swung the valve body around rather than unhooking parking rod. Gave me enough room to replace the band.

    Nice job! Thank you so much. This was a life saver. I did this in my driveway. The band V clip was really difficult to bend. I practiced with the old one first. Don't use a piece of wood to protect the lining. It will allow the V clip to push through the metal band and bend it. I used a shop rag to protect the lining from the jaws of the clamp and it pushed the rag into the lining and some of lining ripped off with the rag. Oops, It'll be aight. I had to put a 2 foot cheater bar on my vise handle to bend the V clip. I also practiced getting the old band around the drum first. I didn't use anything to pull it around. Just push and wiggle. There was only two spots where it seem to hang up.
    THANKS FOR POSTING

    no stupid pointless intros, no stupid music, good enough for the diyer to understand and best of all the band trick and settings! Excellent - thanks! have to do my 01 ram soon its not shifting into lower gears and now and then revs high with no power (yes fluid is at full idling in N) - so its time. Also our 67 travco trans was ruined by stupid tow company who dragged it 90 miles without dropping driveshaft! Burned out - so ill be a dodging trans bullets. Gr8 vid!

    Great video. I crushed the strut mount tab on the band, but apparently not enough. The band barely cleared the first notch on the case, and now it's hung-up somewhere on the top part of the drum/case. I can't get it out. I can't get it in. Feeling like a greenhorn over here.

    Nice garage n video I have same truck thats an 06 48re 300k and i crawled under it and adjusted the front band for second and it was so out that when adjusted correctly the t40 torx screw is down inside the threads and not sticking out for the jam nut so my 2nd gear band is toast . but second gear still actually works it just hesitates for a few seconds at 2k then will shift . I may just pull trans rear main is starting to leak too :(

    Is it possible to do the reverse band with this method? I dropped my pan due to a P1740 and found the pawl in it. I new second gear was really crappy too before i got the code, but thanks to your video, I know what it is without much research. My question is this; What causes this issue to occur in the first place? Is it a symptom of the bands not having been adjusted on time or some other issue? Just want to know if I need to keep an eye out for something else. Thanks again.

    How similar is this trans to a 46re? My son and I are working on his 99 Dakota R/T. He lost reverse, appears to have 2nd gear still. I have adjusted the rear band, it was a little loose, I did find a broken spring in the valve body, another site said it is the 3-4 spring, will that kill reverse? He wants to sell it so I want to fix as inexpensively as possible. Great video with great information.

    • @buck19
      @buck19 5 лет назад +2

      The 3-4 spring has an aftermarket spring thats thicker and addresses the spring breakage. And yes the trans are so similar you can modifiy the 46re trans into an HD trans.

      No, you can adjust the rear band just by dropping the pan. Keep in mind the settings are different for different years as well as whether or not it's a 46, 47, or 48re, so be sure to look up the specs for your tranny as these band adjustments need to be precise for your particular model and year.

    edzGarage working on the same thing, i can't remove the stuipid shift levers on top, i have removed both bolts do i need to spread the bottom lever alittle to get it to come up off the shaft? also, for the park rod do i need to be in a certain gear when reinstalling the VB? You guys rocked this video btw!

    • @ZachU812
      @ZachU812 4 года назад

      I like to put a flathead screwdriver between the levers to work the top one off and loosen up the lower one, you can do the same thing between the case and lower shift lever if you're careful, watch out for the seal under it though. They can be stubborn, keep working them around. As for the park rod, I usually put the rod in first and make sure park engages then put it into the VB and verify again. Be careful with the e-clip, it can be a pain.

    My truck shifts nice now with new front band but now it surges intermittently and feels like someone put a brake on the transmission.. The truck will surge then slow down by itself. Ugh. • @ZachU812

      Mark Shanks It sounds like something is binding up in the transmission, did you adjust the band properly?

    • @markshanks5950
      @markshanks5950 7 лет назад

      I adjusted it twice, the lever did not move as easy as your video did at 12.11, but it does have a little play. 72 in lbs and 1 3/4 turn my manual says. You say 2 turns in video. It did get a flat spot on the band when I bent the tab in the vise. Should I back it off another 1/4 turn see if it gets better?

    • @ZachU812
      @ZachU812 7 лет назад +1

      Mark Shanks Yea I'd try that. 1 3/4 turns specified in the manual assumes a good stock band but they gave the servo extra travel to account for when the band starts wearing. If you back off the adjustment another 1/4 to 1/2 turn you're just using more of the servos travel. I'd start there, just make sure it doesn't slip under load in 2nd gear.

    • @markshanks5950
      @markshanks5950 7 лет назад

      I backed it out 1/2 turn. It does slip now and temp went to 270 degrees on a 5 minute trip. Before normal temp was about 170. I'll drop the pan and take a look see, and make sure all the connectors are fully seated.

    • @ZachU812
      @ZachU812 7 лет назад

      Mark Shanks Yea something isnt right in there, I'm thinking that bend might be causing some trouble. Easy on the trans temp, I get scared over 220 in my truck.

      The drum was not machine smooth so the new friction band has the the potential wear uneven, this uneven wear will shorten the life of the band. I think as long as he doesn't slip second gear by racing or pulling the repair should last for a good while. It is second gear, a gear you pass though pretty quickly in normal driving, so wear should be at a minimum. We will see :-)

    • @johnny0454
      @johnny0454 2 года назад

      Not true, depends on the specific year and model of trans (46re, 47re, vs 48re) All are different, and they changed the specs every couple of years.

    • @johnny0454
