Hello Hiram, thank you for posting this video. You are very generous with your knowledge. I am taking an auto transmission class at school and the instructor used one of your videos to show us how things are done. Thank you for sharing good knowledge!
Im being watching his videos and now I rebuilt like 8 chevys transmissions and those jobs still on the road but now its time to learn some Chrysler trainnies
Fantastic. Thank you for posting these videos, and taking the time to show us folks what it takes and the skill/knowledge it requires to rebuild these things!
Thanks allot for this vid.... I have a Dodge Dakota .. V6 ... with a 42re ... that was toast ... I'm a mechanic ... but always stayed away from transmissions ... so...I went and got a rebuild kit... also with a jr shit kit ... and as long as you take yr time and remember what you took off... and the order... it was actually pretty easy... so... I even went to wreckers and picked up a other one ... that had broken snap rings... picked it up for 50 bucks... and did a rebuild on that one to... just so I had a spare ... so much thanks again... Jay
Man, this video just took it home! Very well step by step explanation of every part of the breakdown. Of course it would still take me 3 full days to do it, but at least I'd know where I'm at! Thanks for posting Hyrum!
Great video Hiram ... thank you for making. My service truck is down and I'm trying to decide what to do. 05 Dodge Ram diesel with 300k miles. Gets 26 miles a gallon....runs great still..I've drove it like grandma and grandpa from day one with occasional light pulling...lol.Again thank you for this video. I may tackle it now after watching. God bless you my friend.
Hiram, thanks a ton for this video. I appreciate both your knowledge that you share and the simple fact that you visually show how to disassemble everything. I have read a lot of write ups but they skip out on some of the details. Also I must say, watching you tear apart this transmission was very entertaining. You just absolutely whipped through that SOB! I WISH I could yank snap rings that quickly.. Perhaps I need to work on my technique. Again, awesome video, I watched every second. You get my vote.
Hirum I just want to thank you. I've got a little over 20 years building under my belt, but i'm here to tell you that you've taught this old dog some new tricks on several occasions.
Wow, what a pleasure to watch someone who REALLY knows his job ... Excellent , one of the best of many I have watched on RUclips. I must now look to see if there is one putting it back together...
I learned so much from this 29 minute video. He really knows his shit. Explains everything precisely. I'm hoping that he has more dodge transmission videos in his playlist. Thanks for the amazing video.
Ok i know this vid is old but from a guy who has done hundreds and hundreds of these transmissions i have to say this is a perfect tutorial for tearing down and inspecting basicaly all dodge from 42- 48re. when the unit was dumped on its side and the fluid ran out i could smell it or maybe that was the smell of the one i did earlier today lol. Great vid.
A true master. It looks like he’s gutted a moose. Lots of parts. I’m getting my 47RE rebuilt I hope they do as good as a job as u do. That amount of work is worth $2000. Great video thank you.
Thanks for taking your time to make and explain the rebuild process in this video, I really learned something new from this. Now I'm not so nervous on trying to build mine.
hiram this is the fire depatment as u are so good, when u use ur tools they get red hot, superman complained, even he cant go as fast as u,this could possibly cause a fire. other than that u are a superhuman this is just a warning .excellent
You rock Hiram. One of the best teardown videos on the web. I wish we were related so you could be here for my rebuild. You hammered that teardown out like a pro. Thank you for such a high quality video. I am doing a complete overhaul and upgrade on my 47re in my 97 Cummins with Red Eagle frictions and Kolene steels. what other parts besides the rollers/sprags or wavy snap rings would you suggest replacing while I have it all apart. I am putting a billet input in there also. All new Torrington bearings, billet pistons, etc? I really appreciate your input and feedback, thank you in advance Brother. I want this tranny to be solid on a moderate budget without sacrificing durability. 298,000 miles and I believe it was rebuilt once already by Jasper Transmissions.
Hiram, thanks for sharing your transmision knowledge. I respect your expertise and truly am grateful to have found your videos on this subject. If you ever get a chance to do some more jeep 42re tranny teardown and rebuild videos Id be sure there are others that would appreciate you sharing your transmission wisdom. Be safe and well. Live long and prosper!
Best 48RE video on youtube! Now, if you only had one to put it back together. I have the ATSG book but there's nothing better than a video refrence. There is another guy on here that has a video of putting one together but he says "that shouldn't matter" or "i'm not gonna worry about that". Not exactly what I want to hear.
Just rebuilt my 48re from an 05 srt10 , direct drum would not come off, I pried of the two drums to remove the snap ring, removed the drum ,the clutch and steels where coned shaped, , band was as bad as the one shown, new bw rebuilt kit, new band , all electrical parts new . It was not as bad as I taught , take it by parts, used this video, also check out his valve body video,
Love the videos. You are very informative and explain what you are doing very well. I like to be as self staining as I can and your videos will help me to achieve that. Thanks, Ken.
Awesome video.. I would have gladly paid money to see it or buy it as a dvd. Id like to have knowledge when I take my 06/srt-10 in to the shop/dealer. Great explanation, description of parts..symptoms.. just fantastic! Thank you!
Perhaps one of the BEST on-line tutorial videos on RUclips. To the point, informative and no music. Thank you for that. Although it would be nice to see the valve body also included. Question, how can I tell if the torque converter needs replacing, or does one just install a new one with the triple clutch set-up to be safe since its all apart anyway? Thank you.
Pressure diagnosis is,complicated, best replace with new😥 skimping on one component on a rebuild is a bad thing. Chance to bring it all down. Tc's are hard to get clean without a expensive machine to flush it. I Into I would replace it.
You're right. All Vipers are manuals unless some owner somewhere modified one to be automatic. But technically speaking, the quad cab SRT 10 is the only factory configuration where the Viper engine was mated to an automatic.
Nice work,I notice the 48s 2nd gear apply lever ratio change from 3.8 to 4.4 when it was the 47 has had a pretty big affect on the band life...IBM thinking the ration change isn't allowing the band to release fast enough,on the 2/3 shift, causing very short band life even in a stock application without abusive driving.
Man.. To say you know these transmissions is an understatement. I have a 48re that won't come out of torque converter lockup. Replaced tcc, gov press. solenoid and transducer.. No luck. Anything else I can check with the pan dropped? Keep up the good work!!
I was curious to know of any big difference in disassembly of a 42re versus the 48re. I wanted to get a spare unit to practice on and maybe upgrade the internals a little bit. If you had any suggestions I would love to hear them. Great video with loads of information +1
Hey am from the Republic of TrinidadandTobago I've watched your video because am in search of answers on transmission problems. However heard you highlighted a problem with Soidnoid Valve... After doing a diagnostic check I found out the (16-line pressure soilnoid valve) is the problem... i wanna find out what is causing the problem and what should I do...And would this just prolong the life of the transmission temporarily...
I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 v6 with a 42re transmission. Why does a transmission does not shift to second when it is cold outside. As soon as I drive truck for at least 10minutes, I shifts and then it keeps shifting perfectly until it gets cool again.
love how thorough you are in explaining what and why you're doing things.just bought a 01 ram 2 wheel dr w/5.9l 24v cummins think it has the 47re auto behind it has 221k on it thinking about rebuilding but just want to beef it up a little would like to up the horse power 50 horse or so what kit would you suggest pull a older heavy bumper pull rv and 18 ft car hauler lumber ect..nothing big and would i have to replace torque converter and do alot to the valve body?
good tutorial bro.l got problem in my 2006 dodge ram 3500 5.9 2wd with extension housing overdrive case crackin .l buy new case in ebay but not easy its expense.ok next step,l in my dodge truck never see the bars betwen transmission and extension housing and l try buy but dont find.greetings from dallas tx
Hi I like the video :) I have Dodge RAM 2500 2003 Cummins with a 47re that needs a rebuild, the oil looks bad and I found parts of a big snapring in the pan. Since I live in Sweden the workshop has to order the parts from US and that can take weeks, but I could get a 48re from a 2004 with low milage on it and the question I have is if you know if I could just take the 47re out and replace it with this 48re, all the electric connections are the same.
Look I can change spark plugs and I think i'm good....lol. This Man is a trans magician ! Where can I go to learn transmission rebuilding. He needs to open a school. I'd like to see a REBUILD video. and how all this goes back together.
I am pretty handy with a wrench and I am also cheap! Would this be something a back yard mechanic could do on his own would would I be making a real mess out of it? And no Viper has the 48re, there all Manuals.
hi Hiram i took off the extension housing off a 00 durango transmission know i cant put it back on can you show me how to put an extension housing back on please
I have a 48re with 30k on the rebuild and it lost overdrive. So I replaced the shift solenoids gov. Pressure solenoid, transducer, speed sensor and the spring you mentioned that breaks. Still didn't have overdrive and there are no engine codes.i tryed forcing in overdrive by grounding the #6 pin wire to rule out ecu issue and still no od.i put a pressure gauge on the overdrive port and I only get 25 psi .so I was thinking it would be the overdrive piston seal but not sure. Any advice would be appreciated. great videos by the way
I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 automatic transmission and it has a shutter at 1300 rpm only at speeds or around 30 mph and 45mph when I barely give it gas, goes away when I give more gas or if I let off the gas it goes away. It feels like I'm running over bumps like the grooves on the road side of the interstate. The transmission does not ship, you can just feel the truck vibrate ,... Bad torque converter? A Dodge dealer said it was the clutches but the transmission does not slip so I don't see how it could be the clutches.
Mr. Gutierrez... I have a 96 Dodge Ram 1500.. I believe it also has the 48RE.. would it be inappropriate to ask what a rebuild like what this transmission needs would cost in 2015 dollars...? You made that tear down look easy.. I realize you have years of experience...but Im looking at having to either do this job or replace the tranny in mine... any help and information would be gratefully received...
I want to thank you for this great vedeo but I have a question...so my oil pan has a reusable gasket..and my question..do I need to replace my oil pump gasket?
By the looks of it there are no responces but I'll try anyway. You didn't remove the bushing in the 2wd extension housing. Why? The 46re tool doesn't work and i can't find a tool for the 48re
What keeps happening to it? The torque converter is always overlooked on the diesels because they are expensive!! With what your towing, a triple disc, lower stall, billet is the least you should have. The trans gets hd diesel shift kit, solid band/hd strut, along with a good solid build. This should pull with no problems, oh don't forget trans cooler.
What would a shop charge to if I took this transmission to them? My truck had the computer worked on since rodents chewed thru ignition wires a fried the computer. Ever since the shift from 1st to second and when slowing down from 2nd to 1st it shifts hard. Expressed it issue to the dealership that it never had that issue, they changed the trans filter, pressure governor and drained and flushed fluid. The problem didn't go away. I don't think they adjusted the bands. What is take on it?
I'm currently tearing down my 48re from my 05 srt-10. So far all my hard parts look ok except the front clutch hub assembly which had clutch plate gouge in the splines. currently thinking I should replace the bellville return spring because of the impressions marked in it from it being used. I have another bellville return spring that looks different. My question is will it be a good replacement for it. BTW i cant find the exact one i have.
He hasn't made a video in years, but I still enjoy learning! Hope he's still healthy and happy.
Awesome video! He literally completely tore-down and diagnosed the 48RE in under 30 minutes!
Hello Hiram, thank you for posting this video. You are very generous with your knowledge. I am taking an auto transmission class at school and the instructor used one of your videos to show us how things are done. Thank you for sharing good knowledge!
Damn, this guy can do this stuff with his eyes closed! I would definitely trust him with work!
Im being watching his videos and now I rebuilt like 8 chevys transmissions and those jobs still on the road but now its time to learn some Chrysler trainnies
Because of Hiram I tackled my 4l60e and rebuilt it in my home garage. I've put 3500 miles on it and happy to say going strong. Thank you sir,
Fantastic. Thank you for posting these videos, and taking the time to show us folks what it takes and the skill/knowledge it requires to rebuild these things!

The best jobs Hiram e o melhor , Os mecânicos brasileiros te agradecem pelas aulas.

Just got a 46RE apart. My 4th gear servo spring was broken. Thanks for the info on that part of the transmission. Great videos!!
hiram this is the fire depatment as u are so good, when u use ur tools they get red hot, superman complained, even he cant go as fast as u,this could possibly cause a fire. other than that u are a superhuman this is just a warning .excellent
What a Talented guy! Definitely knows his shit!
Great educational video! Thanks for taking the time to explain the fuction and reason for failures.
This Guy Is Crazy!!! It's Insane Work But He Has The Mind To Tackle The Job. :)

Great video, very informative. Was nice to learn the difference of the three units.
Great video. I got the message that I ought to take my truck to a professional.
I really enjoy your videos, You do a tremendous job.I always learn something new when i watch your videos!
Awesome
Your videos are very detailed. Definitely worth the time.
Please make one on the 48Re 4-Speed Automatic w/OD. For a Diesel.

The Quad cab version of the SRT 10. Its the same automatic used in the cummins diesel setups of these trucks.

Great video but the viper has the T-56 transmission
gracias.

Mr. Gutierrez... I have a 96 Dodge Ram 1500.. I believe it also has the 48RE.. would it be inappropriate to ask what a rebuild like what this transmission needs would cost in 2015 dollars...? You made that tear down look easy.. I realize you have years of experience...but Im looking at having to either do this job or replace the tranny in mine... any help and information would be gratefully received...
is there any difference in the disassembly from this unit to a 4wd 48re unit other than removing the transfer case
Where can I get the two tab washer shown at 22:48?
I want to thank you for this great vedeo but I have a question...so my oil pan has a reusable gasket..and my question..do I need to replace my oil pump gasket?
+Dubalin H If it came new in the kit, install the new reusable pan gasket. If your kit came with a cork gasket, reuse the original reusable gasket.
....there are no automatic vipers just thought I'd throw that out there
By the looks of it there are no responces but I'll try anyway.
You didn't remove the bushing in the 2wd extension housing.
Why?
The 46re tool doesn't work and i can't find a tool for the 48re
You did a hell of a job you went through that 48re trans like nothing. Where you located at please tell me your in Texas
can you make a break down/rebuild of the 46re/518 pleas!
