42RE Teardown, No Reverse & No 4TH

- In this video, i teardown this 42RE out of a 2002 Jeep. In the rear section of this transmission is the Overdrive Direct Clutch pack, the snap ring that holds this clutch pack likes to break, this broke and came out of place causing the problem. Every overhaul the snap ring gets changed with a new snap ring. Good news is i filmed the rebuild so over the next couple of weeks we will do the 42RE rebuild. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for these educational videos Gary. Your diagnosis was pinpoint correct. I was watching to see the dramatic 800 lb. spring but maybe it was no longer compressed since the snap ring is broken.
sorry, it's in a housing but i did not take that apart
@Joe Dvorsky dramatic? I bet you spent 41 minutes to see the spring loud come out with cracks like fragmentation grenade. Same as me
@@GaryFerraro I thought you were living dangerously banging the OD around with a missing retaining wire ring holding back that big spring, but it was MIA in the video.
This entire process reminded me of what it looks like at a morgue…this man has opened up this Transmission and it’s lying in its own oil as he just digs deeper and deeper…ALSO LETS NOT IGNORE THE FACT THAT THE transmission oil looks like Dark Roast coffe
This is good stuff sir super stoked to watch the tear down and rebuild if this unit once again thanks from here in Ohio this 5r55w works perfect
Awesome, thanks for watching Kevin
Not sure if I am more confident or scared to dig into my transmission, but great to watch! Thanks.
I just started working on transmissions a couple years ago.
The teardown and rebuild vids online have been a great help.
I already work on the rest of the car.

Awesome video.
I think I see the problem right away.
Using the used coffee grounds instead of transmission fluid is the first issue.
I can see where that will be a problem
Like always , great informational video .
Thanks for sharing the video with us .

Best teardown transmission video I've seen... Thanks...
Greet video, Gary, I’m having a problem 42RE myself. Had the broken ring as well. However since I had a hard time finding some hard parts I threw a used unit in to get me by and now I have real problems.
so you got a bad used unit?
@@GaryFerraro Yeah, it looks that way. So the used unit was starting off in third gear and wasn’t shifting properly so I went ahead and swapped my governor transducer and solenoid and sure enough it fixed the problem but bad news.
For one the unit had water, I did a boil test and sure enough the water boiled off from the fluid and worse, it shudders upon acceleration and on the 1-2 up shift violently. All other gears are good. So is Reverse.
Now my original unit burnt up the overdrive clutch for sure and I was able to get a reaction plate, the pressure plate can be saved and the frictions and steels come in the kit.
But now I’m down to the overdrive direct clutch hub which is also burnt and beat up. This one has the hand grenade spring. I need to get some sort of press set up and an output shaft alignment tool or cut an output shaft.
So it’s a mess. I’m a Ford and GM tranny guy so aside from a 904 like 30 years ago this is my first 42RE
BTW Vehicle has 298,000 but runs like a Swiss Army watch.
Thanks and although I don’t always comment, I enjoy all of your videos.
@@GaryFerraro And, as well, where does that broken snap ring go? Since I didn’t remove it I’m not sure what grove but I haven’t tried reassembling it yet.
If it's the common Overdrive/Direct it goes in the overdrive section but you need a press to remove and install it@@perripierre9295
@@GaryFerraro I have a press and I have a tool (used to install Cadillac axle boots in the car) that fits around the hub perfectly and the rig is tall but not tall enough to accept an entire output shaft.
So should I just get the alignment shaft for $30 and which one, they all look identical, because I don’t want to cut a shaft I might need some day?
Please advise.
Thank you for the rapid response
Very good video. Very informative. Keep up your good work.
Greetings from dubai. Like always you are the best. God bless you
Greetings from New York, wish i was there LOL, we are expecting a Blizzard starting tonite
Thabk you for the video! What is the list of tools needed for the job?
Yes sir iwas also thinking if the pump was bad or gone is would cause it go overheat as soon as i turned it on. And i remember when it happened there was white smoke coming near the Cadillac converter not alot of smoke but enough it stopped after 5min so i was thinking maybe the neutral safty switch or my transmission speed sensor when out and burned up do you think that is possible?
That is a good tear down and the transmission
transmission is not good, it is broken. But teardown itself is indeed good
I found part of a snap ring in the pan on my 1997 Grand Cherokee while changing the fluid and filter. Funny thing is the trans worked fine. No problems.
The snap ring is held in place by a very heavy spring, sometimes may not cause a problem if just a piece broke off, rest still may be in place for now but i'm sure the snap ring is broken
Looks like you've done a few of those. Bet you could disassemble it blindfolded. LOL
Yes, have done plenty, LOL, thanks for watching
Amazing video sir, thank you 💯👍
Love your videos. Very perceptive. The room you build in seem separate from garage area. Show one day if you have time. Thanks.

Thanks for recording these they are priceless. ive got a 98 grand cherokee 5.2 44re. after sitting overnight or for a while. upon starting the vehicle there is a hum from the trans for a few seconds, if i move the shifter to neutral it will subside quicker. is this a bad pump or torque converter? also is there a place to donate for asking questions?

Hello, Does the noise change with engine pitch?
Hello again finally got the trans reinstalled hope I got everything buttoned up right, but I did have one Q the rooster comb had to be replaced and trying to shift through gears feels like I am missing 1st on the reinstall is there any thing I could have installed incorrectly on the comb to make this happen thanks your videos really helped me through it Thank You
Drove my tundra with a transmission solenoid fault waiting for the part to arrive. I think I killed my tranny bc it would accelerate really slow, miss a gear, rev really high then drop a gear that felt like a mule kick. After a dozen of those i had no reverse. Neutral was drive, drive was drive and park was under tension. Snap rings and scrambled clutches huh?
sounds like a clutch pack is locked together
I being watching this video for months about to try rebuild my own trans wish me luck 😅
Good Luck, 42RE is not that bad to do
Hey Gary, do you ever get any 4L30e transmissions in for performance rebuilds? I know they went in some BMWs, but I'm more interested in them for their use in Isuzu SUVs. They were kind of at their limits in a big heavy SUV, especially if you wanted to tow with it or use it off road in 4-Low with high engine speed and low airflow through the trans cooler.
Greetings from Thailand and thanks for the video. A technician at service fills the wrong fluid in my 42 RE. Transmission became slippery. Now waiting for the right fluid. Any thoughts are welcome 🙏

Hello Garry! Have a similar problem with my Grand Cherokee, there is no forward and rear drive. When I was driving a car I heard some metalic pop sound. Looks like all gears are out. Engine is running just no driving

Gary ? What might cause a (46re) transmission to not move the truck when in any gear unless the rpm reaches 1500 rpm+ ? thank you
how is reverse?
@@GaryFerraro Reverse is similar. In the past the truck would immediately begin to move once drive or reverse was selected. Now the truck won't move until I increase revs to around 1500 rpm and then it will barely move.I removed the valve body ,cleaned and re-assembled it but that made no difference.I have also replaced the governor solenoid and temp/pressure sensor. No pieces were present in oil pan.
Thank you for responding.
Thanks for this video..maybe the only so accurate. I a '99 4.0 gran cherokee with 4.0..when hot the transmission makes rattling noise when move from P...the noise disappears As I move the stick back to P...what do you think It would have happened? There's a huge oil leak down the transmission Pan..thank you for your help!!
Do you ever find out what happened to your transmission.?
Got a 42re. Having a momentary split second slippage at while in 4th gear. Is this likely to be an overdrive unit issue? Going to pull out an old trans and remove the OD unit tomorrow, with the intention of swapping that out first. Haven't had much luck sourcing a used trans, and all the one's I've got have either had water in them or are at over 250k miles. Water'd unit is the one I'll be pulling out tomorrow, as I'm hoping water didn;t get into the overdrive unit. It sat in a snowbank without a dipstick tube the winter after I removed it, so at least some water got into the pan, and it's been in the shed for 5yrs since.
Have you tried adjusting the cable
@@GaryFerraro Cable wouldn't have an impact in 4th, would it? That's usually a 3-2 issue.
@@ravenbarsrepairs5594 If its a flared shift, cable adjustment may take the flare out
Can you replace the 2nd gear band in a 46re without removing trany
No, the band will not come out through the bottom
Hi, I have a problem in my 44re that stall engine after engaging reverse, but if I put transfer case in Neutral it doesn't stall engine but between idle and 1000rpm it makes alot of metalic noises, above this rpms it stops making this noises. On D drive gears seems doing ok. What could be this problem that is driving me nuts? Problem as getting worst before I could reverse without problem only when cold, and not when normal temperature in hot engine, now I can't reverse even when cold.
Hi Gary , gave 2002 GC with the 42re. Just installed a golen stroker which now puts the engine at 315ft/lb 270hp. Tranby not giving me a problem, but I'm getting a rebuilt tranny installed thus summer. Anything I should be looking for to have a beefier transmission with the higher out engine?
Gary, do you rebuild manual tranys? Say a Borg Warner T56 / 6spd out of a 96 Camaro LT1?
I am having this problem in my 96 dodge Dakota v6. Please help
Hello Mr. Ferraro,
I enjoy this video well made, you show me what I need to do in order to rebuild my 42re trans on my 04 WJ 6 cyl and 4x4 with select trac. My question to you sir can you kindly provide the parts # for the required snap rings that like to brake on the trans body direct drums? I have search the internet for them but I'm quite confuse about which ones to buy.
Thank you sir!!
The only one you really need is the Overdrive Direct snap ring, if the others are not broken reuse them. Where are you located?
@@GaryFerraroHello Mr. Ferraro, thank you for responding. I'm in Florida, I already have the snap ring kit for the overdrive section, 6 rings...what do you mean by the overdrive Direct snap ring? Is that the forward clutch or the other clutch for the reverse? this is where I get confuse. the problem I have with my tranny is the hard shifting from 1st to 2nd on take off, bands are adjusted properly, 3rd and 4th shifting smooth. The broken snap ring I found on the pan is from one of the clutches in the main body not the overdrive section even thought they look the same but I will replace all major snap rings on this tranny. I took a moment to look for this direct overdrive snap ring, I got a wave snap ring, is that the correct ring?
@@williamvargas17 Yes, that is the clutch pack in the o/d section behind the large spring. Have you tried adjusting the cable?
I wonder if one of those snap rings can cause it to not come out of first gear at all.

Anyhow, why is the function of the sprag in the overdrive section? When does it actually play any role?
The big spring is held in with a snap ring, i will see if i can find one and film it real quick. Sprag is the bridge to the 3-4 shift
Hey Gary, thanks for the informational video I have tons of Q's but I will start with two what overhaul kit was used on these 42re videos and the torque converter was refurbished? Thanks 99 jeep wj
