Power corrupts, not only morally or mentally but most importantly spiritually. It becomes a sickness of the soul, it becomes never enough, is merely an addiction.

I want to believe that putin was and still is a good man deep inside, however I am very aware that he is probably lying. The guy was a former secret police agent, he knows how to act and he can do it effectively. Trying to build a nice image for yourself just to gain the trust of the people and get elected so you can gain power is something many "politicians" in many different countries have done. This is why I am simply too reluctant to believe Putin's words.

You're absolutely correct!!! I actually learned that lesson the hard way while I was playing Clash of Clans. It's a mobile app game that allows for players to join clans (analogous to countries in this case) and fight other clans with each other. The "politics" of the clan system are set up in a way that the leader has absolute power and can dictate everything that happens to the clan. So let's just say, as a clan leader, I was doing some not very nice things. Thank God it was only a game and didn't affect anyone's actual life. But yea that game taught me a lot about politics.

I’m thinking that what he is doing right now is an act of something more than being a president. He is more than 20 years at his post even despite the fact of Dmitry Medvedev was also a president during this period but being controlled by Putin. He did many good things after Yeltsin but only during his first two periods. I suppose now he performs something in order to engrave himself like the most powerful and mighty person in geopolitics. He’s more than 70 y.o., his time is getting closer so he performs. Not because of money or resources but to see how far he may go with his power. It’s frightening what absolute power can do to people.
We, Russians, are trying to deal with it since 2017 when an active protest wave appeared in our country. Government is stronger unfortunately. Some people were born with Putin at his post and died some days ago in Ukraine. I’m looking forward to seeing him leaving.

@@francoiscamy5066 russian history has unpredictable past, this is a thing I hear sometimes. This is because some book for students are written by politicians, not historians. Overall our history proves that most of people here got used to be like slaves. Throughout times it became clear that russian guy is the one who cannot live without a tsar who decide what’s better for his people. Even now many people here are supporting Putin for no reason, just because “he knows what to do”. It’s very sad that the only person ruined lots of businesses here making someone unemployed and turned other countries to end up relationships in many fields. But still someone is believing that it’s going to be better for us… What happens today would be a new dark part of our history and it proves that some people here are still live with a need to have a tsar in their lives.

I'm really curious if this is what he believed at the time, or if he's just pretending to be a democrat here since he's only a year or two in office. According to Simon Sebag Montefiore (take it with a grain of salt, he doesn't specify a source) Putin once asked his entourage 'who was the greatest criminal in Russian history?' and before they could respond he answered his own question: 'the greatest traitors in our history were those weaklings; Nicholas II and Mikhail Gorbachev, who threw power on the floor to be picked up by madmen. I would never abdicate'.
That's certainly what Putin believes now as Russia's 21st century Tsar. Was he always that way?

in the early 2000s he wanted to get integrated in the western economic sphere... he was releasing interviews like this one and saying he believed in liberalism. he said he asked Clinton to join NATO in 2000. he set up the NATO-Russia Council in 2002. Russian economy was growing strong. this phase lasted maybe until 2006... then some very contradictory 8 years and then with Crimea he took the final decision to throw all masks and just show publicly to the world he's a fascist dictator whose goal is to recreate the great empire and to destroy the west with propaganda. Russian economy started to tank after Crimea but he doubled down on his craziness, he's now completely detached from reality (other than from his people).

So inspiring to hear this! I’m sure this man will bring freedom and democracy to Russia for years to come.

This is why I have always said that in politics we should not have people that are older because when it comes down to it whatever they decide the ones are going to fight and pay the price is the younger generation it's a very sad

Yes and contrary to common belief people tend to get crazier the older they get.

You know as this whole war unfolds I'm beginning to think and wonder if the time for a female president or just females taking charge of countries is coming or is the solution

This war is really making me think I've always been against females being in power I don't think it's our role I think men were born to be leaders but I don't know it's not looking good

One of the contributing factors to the fall of the Russian Empire and the Tsar was a long, devastating war (World War 1).
One of the contributing factors to the fall of the USSR and the Communist Party was a long, devastating war (Soviet - Afghan war).
I wonder if this war would be long and devastating as well, and would it kickstart the fall of the Russian Federation and Putin as well.

I think it already did start the downfall of Russia with this war in Ukraine. The world is not standing for it and has had enough of Putin. Remember he interfered in the 2016 elections and even in the 2020 election. The sanctions will turn the oligarchs and people of Russia against him. Byebye Putin.

and let's not forget the war with ukraine is already 8 years long and russian economy started to tank in 2014 exactly because he started it and the world responded negatively. now he scaled it up massively and he's in for a rude awakening
