Thanks for watching! Here's the step by step tutorial article... stoneandsons.net/how-to-replace-columns/
Really like the way those columns changed the look of the porch. Got me reevaluating my patio
Lol. It does make a difference.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Know it is an older video, but just did this project in 2021. Wanted to say thanks for the great video and tips! Made my project easier!
Thanks! I have to replace the corner post of my house and thought a car jack would work to hold
a temp post in place while the main post is put into position. Now, I know that will work after
looking at your video. Great Job!!!
Do you anchor those bottom plates to the concrete? Maybe I missed that part?
That's a great looking upgrade to your house Shawn! Awesome Job!
I appreciate it. We’re happy with how it looks.
The columns turned out great! Nicely done.
Thanks man.
that turned out great. I like the look far better than the previous. good job!!!
Thank you!
Awesome job. Looks awesome!! Take Care.
Very nice work. Great color choice.
Great instructional video.
I’ve got just 1 post to replace, for the same reason. It’s become rotten at the bottom .
I probably should put up 2 new post and go larger like yours .
My front porch only has 2 beams needed to hold the overhang of the house over the concrete porch.
I’m not by far a extremely skilled carpenter as your self, I know just enough to get some Jobs like this done, and a few other thing’s.
I’m learning little at a time though through Small DIY Stuff & videos such as yours are very helpful!
I bought the exact same Jack u were using , not only to keep in trunk of my Car, but also for jacking up the porch when I got around to replacing my bad Post.
I like your videos. My In-Laws live in your town. I live 2 hours from you! Keep the videos coming man!!
Thanks
Nice! Thanks.
House looks great! I'm in the middle of this right now- just ripped down the old porch ceiling and will be replacing one rotted post. Planning on boxing them out to about 7" square.
Sounds nice.
Great video. Sweet, to the point. I will subscribe. I like how you don’t try to act like everybody has been doing carpentry for 30 years.
That was great. I'm looking to do the exact same thing but have been torn whether to do 4x4 and then wrap in pine/ cedar ABC's stain... or use a treated 6x6 and stain. Your 6x6s looked pretty fresh, no issues with the stain soaking in?
Looks great Shawn! Thanks for sharing the video with us.👍😎JP
Thanks for watching!
Looking Good Shawn. Makes a big difference on the curb appeal. 👍
Thanks Gary. We’re happy with it.
So pretty. Great upgrade.
That looks great. I think it would be cool seeing a video on the landscaping.
Thanks
Great vid.....half caps do look awesome
Looks great! Great job! Where would I find those Galvanized post bases (with flush bottom)?
A great project Shawn.
Thanks
Yes for landscape! 👍
Thanks for this. Getting ready to replace rotten 6×6's for first time. Concrete surrounds the posts im replacing and posts were on dirt. Would it be best to fill in with concrete before installing? Just doing a little research for best way to do it.
just by watching your video I think it's pretty Easy the way you have you're video done and I can follow step I am gonna doing my work by myself .....
What stain do you use for the 85% moisture content in those treated pine post there with the splits in them?
Thank you for the Video!!! What color was that stain? that looks awesome!
Do you have any more info on the post base, the web site is pretty generic. I've been searching for some like those but haven't had any luck. Thanks in advance, and your post looks great!
Trying to do same exact project, where did you find them galvanized post base? Include link or store that carries them please
Really good video thanks
Looks good, where did you get the bases ?
Columns look great Shawn! Why wouldn't you want to cut them on the table saw? Thanks!
Thanks!! The columns would have been too heavy and cumbersome for a safe cut on the table saw.
Looks great. My only question is on the stain. Don't you have to let treated woods cure for 6 months or so?
were the post pressure treated? If so did you have to wait to stain them?
Looks great! I was wondering how you were going to do those half post and I'm not jealous because that treated SYP is tough stuff haha. Btw, best way I've found to cut 6x6 down to length is just a cut around all 4 sides with a circular saw and handsaw the rest if it needs it.
Thanks man! The new columns made a huge difference.
Looks great! And yeah, a bandsaw woulda been ideal for that ripping. I bet that took you two hours!
It didn't take too long, but longer than I wanted. lol
Hey what brand/color stain is that?
Looks awesome! Maybe use a 2x6 for the half column?
thats what i thought
Looks great! But very curious to know what color and type of stain you used?
Are these methods you used also applied to vinyl victorian columns with a metal post in the center? I am worried they will all move when I set a new one in.
I’m not sure about that. I would ask a contractor in your area to take a look.
I will be doing same using 4x6. Where did you buy the base anchor plates?
Lowe’s. These are the ones I used www.lowes.com/pd/Simpson-Strong-Tie-Steel-G185-Post-Base-Common-6-in-Actual-3-in/1002542556
Do you stain the end of the post base to help protect from water?
Are the columns held in place just by the weight of the structure above it? Are anchors needed?
I was wondering the same thing..
So the roof rests on the columns? You don't have to fasten them in any way?
Where can I find those specific bases?? I got some from Lowe’s but they don’t have the trim like these do.
Did you ever find a base like what he used? I can’t find them anywhere either. I can find them, but they don’t raise the post off the concrete.
Curious, were the half post needed for structural reasons or just aesthetics?
Could have a 2x6 for half post - it works !
How do you screw the bottom post to the porch?
Hey, thanks for the video. I have a back porch with 13 columns that need to be replaced and I've been looking for those post bases. Do you know how i could get my hands on that type base? I have looked at all local stores and internet and have come up empty handed.
Thanks for watching. Here’s where I got mine. www.newhomebuilding.net
Great info👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
Whatvabout the water run off under the new column? Even if it is pressure treated it can still decay, just a thought, looks 👍
did you not have to attach the columns to the concrete?
Why not have used 4x6 for the house? I ask because I’m doing the same thing and I noticed it was a pain to cut the 6x6 in half
I was told wood cannot touch concrete because it can dry rot. You need a footer underneath.
What kind of lumber?
GV. I have questions sir.
Man I would have thrown that 6 X 6 through the rip blade on the band saw. It was most likely spruce or fir. Its not too common to see pine in PT lumber. Nice job though they look great. Love the stain.
Thanks, Greg. They were sold as treated pine. Either way, it's done. Phew. lol
In the South East US, most treated wood is Southern Yellow Pine.
No anchor on bottom of column?????
couldn't you just buy two 6x3s instead of cutting them?
My local store didn’t have them
Why didn't you just use a 2x6?
4x6 would made things easier then cutting 6x6 in half🤷🏽♂️
Instead of cutting the 6x6 in half, I think I'd use a 2 x 6 or 4 x 6 and call it good.
