I first started playing guitar when I was 14, many years ago, stopped in my 30s, then picked it up again 2 years ago when I hit 60. I've always moved open chords around, but like you Steve, felt it was somehow not the thing to do. Thank you for giving me licence to do this, plus ideas for other open chords. You tube wasnt invented all those years ago, but thanks to it, I've got further than I did years ago. You are the best teacher out there Steve, totally inspiring and understanding of the mindset of us learners; thank you so much for all your videos.

I've played that EChord riff many times for the exercise... it always reminded me of REOs Time For MeTo Fly even tho I'm pretty sure their guitar is tuned differently

Steve: I have question for you please. I lost 1/2 of my left index finger in Viet Nam. I love the guitar, but am very frustrated trying to make bar chords. Is it possible to make chords without having to barr them? For instance, I can't make the F barr chord. Are there other ways to play the F chord without having to barr it? If so, is their a book that shows multiple ways of making chords so I don't have to barr them? Thanks for any advise.......William

Some guitarists (including Jimi Hendrix) sometimes make the F chord by using their thumb to fret the note on the 6th string, 1st fret; with their ring finger on the 5th string, 3rd fret; pinkie on the 4th string, 3rd fret, middle finger on the 3rd string, 2nd fret, and the index finger on the 1st fret of the 2nd string and sometimes also on the high E.
But even without the index finger, if you can wrap your thumb around the neck and play the bottom 4 strings as described above, those 4 notes are F, C, F, A, and that's a complete F major chord. And it's a movable shape, just like a barre chord.
Give it a try... even if you can only manage to fret the bottom 2 notes using your thumb and ring finger (or pinkie), that's still a movable power chord.
Hope this helps... and rock on! :-)
