Whenever I ask someone how to play chords up the neck they tell me to learn the CAGED system, I did go down that rabbit hole for a while, but it just seemed so overkill for what I wanted. In reality this was all I needed to unlock more voicings and to allow me to move past the GDC trap that I've been in for years. I am so grateful, thank you a million times over.
The problem with the cage system is its all barre chords, then once you learn it people say its not about barre chords grrr. The Cage system is damn hard and takes a long time to learn due the said barre chords. People who love this system says it helps you to learn the neck, but to do that you have to know all the notes on the fret board by hear. So if you know all the notes by heart, you will know each note and its relation to each other making the cage system redundant.
please make more videos like this one!!!! I really like how you just took the number of chords I already know and multiplied that by 3 or 4 in one practice session. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost my login password. I love any tricks you can offer me
Wow, this helped a lot! My moms birthday is coming up, and I said I'd write 10 new songs, but I only know a few chords, this will allow them to stop sounding so similar! THANK YOU! XD
This was SO helpful :') no bs, just straight to the point! I've been playing for years but feel like I've never gone beyond the standard root position chords and strumming patterns. Super excited I found you!!! Thank you for making these videos!
After seeing this I think I understand the guitar much better. This really makes sense as you use the standard chord shapes on higher frets when using a capo to get different chords :)
Finally, I am beginning to understand how the names change with same shape up and down! Thank You. It's the root note that is the thicker string, usually! RIGHT?
That d shape moved up the neck to make other chords, I can’t remember the names top of my head now but you just made the sound of the chorus and verse chords in the song Jack and Dianne. I’ve been working on that song.
Thanks so much help to go from scales to chords and back and forth .I think everyone learning should learn there scales and these chords it makes such a difference.
if you move the non bar c shape chord the third string will be opened and it is not possible not to touch it with the pick .. so the chord won't sound correctly on eery positions
Hey andy! Great video as usual...really helped me out! Could you perhaps do a tutorial or an explanation on writing melodies over a chord progression in a certain key? Thank you!
Andy I am sure you know but my hero Steve Howe's song Wurm (part c of Starship Trooper) was based on those first 3 chords? The only difference he played the 6th string instead of the 5th.
Thanks for this. LIke many beginners I have hit a point where I can play basic open chords and barr chords but then don't know where to go. There seem to be a lot of diffreent ways to playing chords in different positions, so how does one learn them? Do you reach a point where i f you know the notes in a chord then work it out for yourself? Or do all guitarists at any level just look it up on the interenet. I can't belive the latter is the case...is it?
Barre chords are an easy tool that can help you find chords that sound better by removing some of the strings of the chord, I almost never play barre chords anymore
andy , i am a singer, i want to play the guitar while singing , what level of guitar should i reach or finish ? should i finish the intermediate or only the beginner ? thanks.
Its a good video but for most people they would be able to do it if you just name where the first finger goes and tell them to keep the C Shape etc. Do you have a chart for this ?
What is the chord position for the BbM7 chord at the, is it played at the 5 or 6 string using a E shaped barr cord? Respond ASP Word Consert Tour is being delayed from this dilemma.
Andy love the way u work.... Loads of love to uh.... Can u Plz do a tutorial on Proud corazón from the movie Coco .... Please... It will b a great help....
Thanks Andy this helps a lot. My music theory is grainy at best so can you tell me... if using the c shape on the 10th fret to make a g. Would that mean it’s a g in the key of c? Basically what I mean is. Does the shape determine the key of the chord?
The key is like the group if chords. The key of G includes G, D, Em, C, Am, Dm, and Bdim. Ever notice you never see songs in G with A#? That's because it isn't in the key. The key of C includes C, Dm, Em, G, Am, F. Playing a different chord doesn't change the key.
Just like taking my dog for a walk no stress ,cheers does piss me off wen reading Guitar Tabs and can't figure out a chord nr the fret ,a Little easier now

Wow, this helped a lot! My moms birthday is coming up, and I said I'd write 10 new songs, but I only know a few chords, this will allow them to stop sounding so similar! THANK YOU! XD
To create the Em at 4:00 you can simply remove the middle finger and keep the first finger where it is. This is an Em7 which sounds nice too.
Yeah thats a cool chord l use all the time........lt just sounds great!!!!
That is so helpful!
thankyou so much Andy!
This was awesome! I just finished learning triads so this made perfect sense. Buying the improving book right now!

Any chance you'll ever cover "Celtic Symphony?"
Nice
Great lesson tho my major concern is finding chords that are close and not move up and down the fretboard
Im gonna get a new guitar for this... 4 guitars behind you ;p
Incredibly useful tutorial........when you play a C chord you say to hold 1st string down on 3rd fret...is this not a C/G chord?
Second!! From Nepal!!
why do you add an extra finger to the moveable chord compared to the chord in the open position ?
So we’re muting the g string correct?
Thank god, how do you strum like that?
Thanks Andy this helps a lot. My music theory is grainy at best so can you tell me... if using the c shape on the 10th fret to make a g. Would that mean it’s a g in the key of c? Basically what I mean is. Does the shape determine the key of the chord?
