Great ideas! Here is another skillet meal idea that we do for lunch around here... we call it Egg Roll Bowls and this amount serves 6 of us. Brown a pound of Breakfast Sausage with garlic. Once it's cooked through, add 4 eggs and scramble into the meat. Add about a Tbsp of minced ginger. A Tbsp of soy sauce (or coconut aminos), half a bag of coleslaw, and a cup of frozen peas or other mixed veggies. Heat everything through and serve over rice. All of my kids love it!
I'm glad these gave you some ideas! Yes, we generally eat homemade meals three times a day (breakfast is a little simpler.) This blog post has a list of our breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. ourlifehomeschooling.com/2024/11/12/how-to-plan-healthy-meals-for-your-large-family/
They do! We have an afternoon snack around 3:30 and then eat a later dinner. I wrote down all our meal lists, including what we eat for snacks, in this post. ourlifehomeschooling.com/2024/11/12/how-to-plan-healthy-meals-for-your-large-family/
I clicked so fast! I loved seeing your wonderful lunch ideas. We cook in a similar fashion, but many of these are new ideas for me. I watched with some of my kids, we’ll be adding some of these to our rotation. Thank you!
Hey I've got a very quick and easy way to prepare butternut squash especially if you are mashing it up anyway. Cut it in half lengthwise remove the seeds place on a sheet pan skin side up and bake it in the oven at 350°. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on how big your squash is and how many you have. You can insert a knife you want it to be very soft. You could even cover it with a little bit of loose foil over the top to keep it from drying out but the skin acts like a lid. When it's done cooking and has cooled a bit you just simply take a spoon and scrape it out of the shell! You can also do this in the microwave as well placing it on a plate and I put a glass lid over it. Approximately 10 minutes and it is done!
We have the same large cast iron pan and I make very similar skillet meals! We use a lot of ground venison since my husband hunts. My oldest (14) cooks in the kitchen, and my 5 and 7 year old girls help more with baking. However both girls have been wanting to help more with cooking over the stove. This is something we’ve started slowly. I admire your children working beside you in the kitchen 😊And thank you for more meal ideas too!
Oh cool! I love that cast iron skillet, mostly because of how big it is! Thanks for sharing about your family. I love hearing about from viewers and how things work in other homes. It's work having the kids help when they're little, but when they get older and they still like to cook/bake, it really pays off!
You're doing an awesome job! Thanks for the inspiration! I would love a video about kitchen reset and how you do the clean up after all the from scratch yummy food.
Thank you and you're welcome! :) I'll keep that in mind for the future! Mostly, we just stick to our chore routine. I have one kitchen helper each day who is responsible for clean up for that day. If it's an older kid, they clean up and I help. If it's a younger kid, I clean up and they help.
Yum! Thanks for sharing :) I had a giggle after you showed your amazing canned item pantry, and thought to myself, “we won’t judge, Sherry, that you don’t shred your own cheese.” 😏
Thank you! Usually I make meals from scratch for dinner. I try to double meals so we can have leftovers. I share more about how we make healthy meals three times a day for our family in a blog post. I'll link it below. It gives a list of meals I make for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. ourlifehomeschooling.com/2024/11/12/how-to-plan-healthy-meals-for-your-large-family/
Thank you so much for this video, it really was very helpful. I love that these meals are healthy, budget-friendly, and can feed a crowd (all things that I need! lol). Also, I love that they can all be tweaked to be gluten free. Two of my children cannot have gluten and it is much simpler to cook something gluten free for everyone than to try and have separate meal plans.
All of these look delicious!!! I love that there isn’t a bunch of ingredients or prep dishes. I love doing sheet pan dinners in the winter and slow cookers in the summer. I also love your huge cast iron pan! Do you find it hard to wash since it’s so big and heavy? Mine isn’t as big but still pretty big and my wrists hurt from washing it.
Thank you! I agree...less ingredients keeps it simple and healthier. It is kind of bulky to wash, but I to feed us all, it's either a big skillet or using two.
Great question! The blog post I linked in the description actually goes through how I plan meals. I'll link it again if you want to read more. I don't menu plan. I write out a list of all my go-to meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks and use that to pick what we're having for the day. Then the biggest thing for me is to keep a stocked kitchen. Since we make the meals on my list over and over again, I aim to keep the ingredients for those always in stock. I've tried menu planning in the past, but I ended up switching meals around so much bc of last minute changes in schedule or sometimes because I didn't feel like having the dish I planned that night that I moved away from menu planning. Here's more info if you want a detailed explanation. ourlifehomeschooling.com/2024/11/12/how-to-plan-healthy-meals-for-your-large-family/
I would love for my family to eat like this but my kids are sooo picky. I know it's because I "let" them but it's so hard to make a meal like this, and have literally none of them eat it. So they whine and cry the rest of the day because they are hungry and I have to eat this for leftovers for days. Do you have any kids who will refuse to eat? How do you deal with that?
My children don’t eat like this either. It’s not because I “let them.” They can go days without eating. So the “it’s this or nothing” ploy doesn’t work with mine. 🤷🏼♀️
I also have a picky eater but it's no one's fault. They have sensory issues and some allergies and like all people just flat out preferences! Lol! Mealtimes can sometimes be tricky so I always make sure I have some foods on hand that my child will eat. Thankfully they do love healthy foods!
I feel the same way. I have 5 kids 7 and under, so when I take the time to make a simple, healthy meal that only my husband and I eat, it feels really discouraging! It feels like it would be an arduous undertaking with lots of whining to transition my kids to eating more veggies/soups/etc., but I know it just has to start one thing at a time. Sheri, you are inspiring!
That would be tough! I don't have any kids who are super picky. I have a few who dislike certain things, but none that refuse to eat. I would probably just do my best to feed them what they eat, but over time slowly keep trying to offer healthy options. I hope you can find some good solutions!
Thank you! :) When our kids were all younger, they were probably pickier. We have slowly added in healthier foods over the years. Maybe your kids' tastes will change as they grow? That happened for a few of ours.
I'm not sure if I was more pained or more impressed. I have a small chefs knife that I use for chopping and prefer the smaller size, but using a pairing knife for ALL the prep? That's hardcore and dish saving! 😂
Ha! You're right, I do! I think I'm used to it because that is the knife I use for almost everything. 😂 I have small hands so I've always used a small knife.

Ooh, love it! That sounds delicious! Definitely tucking that awa. Thanks for sharing!
Love these ideas, I'll definitely be trying them out! I'm amazed you cook like this for lunch! Do you do another big meal for dinner?

Aww, I love that you are watching with your kids!
I'm glad this gave you some ideas. You're welcome! :)
@ Question… I can’t figure out what sausage you are using? Is that a breakfast sausage? Or maybe Italian?
Your are amazing in the kitchen, I really need to work on this
Thanks, I'm not always amazing in the kitchen, but I've gotten better over time!
Thank you for this! It was inspiring! There are days that I struggle so much with meals.
You are welcome! I'm so glad this inspired you. I can relate...sometimes I get into a rut with meal ideas too!
Thanks so much for sharing this! I really want to be better at cooking more healthy meals at home such a helpful video.
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
These are great ideas, Sherri! Almost all of my meals begin with an onion, too.
Haha, I know what you mean - onions are the key to flavor!
What delicious, healthy lunch ideas! 😋
Thank you!

Thank you so much!! I've been waiting for this video. You do everything with such grace. Thank you for sharing with us
You are so welcome! I'm glad you liked it. :)

What size is your skillet?
As in the massive one in the video hehe
Looks like a 15inch. I have one like it and it seems exactly like it.
It's a 15 inch skillet. Here is the link. amzn.to/40PNpFK
Yes, it is a 15 inch! Good guess!
You need a bigger knife! It pains me to watch you cut up all of that with that little ol knife 😆
