    Thank you so much for this video, it really was very helpful. I love that these meals are healthy, budget-friendly, and can feed a crowd (all things that I need! lol). Also, I love that they can all be tweaked to be gluten free. Two of my children cannot have gluten and it is much simpler to cook something gluten free for everyone than to try and have separate meal plans.

    We have the same large cast iron pan and I make very similar skillet meals! We use a lot of ground venison since my husband hunts. My oldest (14) cooks in the kitchen, and my 5 and 7 year old girls help more with baking. However both girls have been wanting to help more with cooking over the stove. This is something we’ve started slowly. I admire your children working beside you in the kitchen 😊And thank you for more meal ideas too!

    • @OurLifeHomeschooling
      @OurLifeHomeschooling 5 дней назад

      Great question! The blog post I linked in the description actually goes through how I plan meals. I'll link it again if you want to read more. I don't menu plan. I write out a list of all my go-to meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks and use that to pick what we're having for the day. Then the biggest thing for me is to keep a stocked kitchen. Since we make the meals on my list over and over again, I aim to keep the ingredients for those always in stock. I've tried menu planning in the past, but I ended up switching meals around so much bc of last minute changes in schedule or sometimes because I didn't feel like having the dish I planned that night that I moved away from menu planning. Here's more info if you want a detailed explanation. ourlifehomeschooling.com/2024/11/12/how-to-plan-healthy-meals-for-your-large-family/

    Hey I've got a very quick and easy way to prepare butternut squash especially if you are mashing it up anyway. Cut it in half lengthwise remove the seeds place on a sheet pan skin side up and bake it in the oven at 350°. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on how big your squash is and how many you have. You can insert a knife you want it to be very soft. You could even cover it with a little bit of loose foil over the top to keep it from drying out but the skin acts like a lid. When it's done cooking and has cooled a bit you just simply take a spoon and scrape it out of the shell! You can also do this in the microwave as well placing it on a plate and I put a glass lid over it. Approximately 10 minutes and it is done!

    I would love for my family to eat like this but my kids are sooo picky. I know it's because I "let" them but it's so hard to make a meal like this, and have literally none of them eat it. So they whine and cry the rest of the day because they are hungry and I have to eat this for leftovers for days. Do you have any kids who will refuse to eat? How do you deal with that?

    • @RachaelNewman
      @RachaelNewman 7 дней назад

      My children don’t eat like this either. It’s not because I “let them.” They can go days without eating. So the “it’s this or nothing” ploy doesn’t work with mine. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @AndreaOPatick
      @AndreaOPatick 6 дней назад

      I also have a picky eater but it's no one's fault. They have sensory issues and some allergies and like all people just flat out preferences! Lol! Mealtimes can sometimes be tricky so I always make sure I have some foods on hand that my child will eat. Thankfully they do love healthy foods!

      I feel the same way. I have 5 kids 7 and under, so when I take the time to make a simple, healthy meal that only my husband and I eat, it feels really discouraging! It feels like it would be an arduous undertaking with lots of whining to transition my kids to eating more veggies/soups/etc., but I know it just has to start one thing at a time. Great ideas! Here is another skillet meal idea that we do for lunch around here... we call it Egg Roll Bowls and this amount serves 6 of us. Brown a pound of Breakfast Sausage with garlic. Once it's cooked through, add 4 eggs and scramble into the meat. Add about a Tbsp of minced ginger. A Tbsp of soy sauce (or coconut aminos), half a bag of coleslaw, and a cup of frozen peas or other mixed veggies. Heat everything through and serve over rice. All of my kids love it!

    I have four girls who are always drawing as yours do when you read to them. What do you do with all those extra loose papers?? 😅I toss them above my fridge so they’re forgotten about then throw them out about a month or so later. Unless they’re really special or worked hard on. But I always feel so overwhelmed at all the extra papers everywhere. There is only so much I can save. Do you have some advice? What do y’all do?!

    • @OurLifeHomeschooling
      @OurLifeHomeschooling 5 дней назад

      Haha, it's funny you ask. My husband and I have different opinions. He likes for them to have paper when they want and be as creative as they get the urge. I, on the other hand, get overwhelmed with papers everywhere and want to limit the paper handouts. So we usually end up either somewhere in the middle or going back and forth between phases of limiting papers and letting them use as much as they want. I guess we're not too consistent with it, oops! But I feel your pain. I've tried everything...fridge, putting them in a binder. I usually just save it for a while and then secretly throw some away hoping they won't notice.

    • @OurLifeHomeschooling
      @OurLifeHomeschooling 11 дней назад

      Not at all. If your curriculum isn't meeting your needs, definitely switch. I'm not against changing curriculums, I just like to remind moms of the benefits of sticking with a curriculum over time, especially for math. But if you think some thing is missing or is not working in curriculum, I would switch.

    I would love to hear your thoughts on teaching language arts. With this being my first year homeschooling I need more direction on what all the necessary components are. I have second grade twins and they both learn so differently with one being neurodivergent. I have been hung up between using 2 curriculums for each and it just gets confusing. I wish I knew how to simplify and focus on what really matters in this area of learning. I absolutely love this video on math!! It makes me happy to know I am implementing a lot of your strategies!

    • @OurLifeHomeschooling
      @OurLifeHomeschooling 5 дней назад

      Oh good! I'm glad this helped you! I have done several posts/videos on how we teach language arts. I'll link one below for you. I spend a lot of time reading aloud. I let our kids learn to read slowly at their own pace. We do copywork and (oral) narration from the beginning. I don't start a formal language program until 4th grade. Copywork and narration cover SO much. They are a hidden gem, in my opinion, highly underestimated by many educators. I personally think it would be a lot to try to use two different language arts curriculums. I would use just one and try to modify it to meet each of their needs. In one of your videos you mentioned that every time you add a new baby, it takes 6 months to a year to get back into it. My fourth born is currently 5 months old and I’m the most tired I have ever been. It is a struggle for me to do a SINGLE thing beyond what’s absolutely required. If you could speak into this into more detail in a video it would be so encouraging for me! Because there’s this confusing balance of having grace for the season of life, but also needing to push through sometimes too.

      I sympathize with your comment because I have been in that exact stage so many times. I did a video of about homeschooling with an infant that would probably speak a lot to some of your questions. I think one important thing I learned after several babies is that that season where you can't get anything done goes by so quickly though at the time it seems like it will never end. I would say push through and work hard when you get the little windows of opportunity, but when your hands feel tied, remember that taking care of your kids IS getting something done. I thought you used Beast Academy and would discuss that aspect of your homeschooling. Why did you choose to leave that out? Any future content plans concerning this?

      I'm not familiar with Beast Academy. We have only used Right Start Math and Singapore.

    Could you do a similar video on how to teach the phonics rules and sight words sort of concepts? My child always gets really upset with learning these (as it’s often repetitive and out of context) and I need more ideas on how to make it fun/or more gentle.

      I've heard good things about Phonics Zoo (IEW) but have not used it. All About Spelling/Reading might work.

      Here is a video I did on how I teach phonics and reading with Bob Books. I have a companion guide to teaching Bob Books ($8) on my website that I have used to teach eight of our ten kids to read. It's very simple and has worked well with all of our kids. I'll link the video for you. ruclips.net/video/jLGNTLVpVtk/видео.htmlsi=u9MHcMjH7WknwTr4

      @@OurLifeHomeschoolingthank you for sharing this. Sometimes I'm also riddled with guild asking myself again and again whether we learn enough, while all we need is to be consistent and make progress daily
