Some other things I've learned homeschooling boys, they also thrive on verbal affirmation and being built up in their male ness. At least mine are very affected by my words. If I say 'wow buddy, you are so strong' they want to showcase that strength and we can then encouragingly direct them on how to use that strength, and they want to try it. And when we see it in action, notice and say oh yeah, good job being a gentlemen... They feel so seen and manly. It carries over with school stuff too. Looking for ways to build them up.
Oh wow, yes! I'm so glad you mentioned this! Very true. I have seen this in my boys as well. Boys thrive on verbal affirmation about them doing something tough or overcoming a challenge...thanks for sharing!
(Wife typing) Mother of 5 boys here. This video was nothing short of Providential for me today. I was *just* today talking to another mother of also all boys and just trying to navigate this whole homeschooling only boys thing.
I've got 3 girls and 1 boy. This video is so timely for me. Trying to get my 5 year old boy to focus like my girls do for their school and I was literally wondering today if he's just lazy. Now I realize, I haven't given him enough breaks to run and be wild. So far I can only motivate hin with chocolate. 😂 Starting tomorrow we will take more breaks to jump around. Thanks for tips!
This video came at the right time for me! Yay the RUclips algorithm did something right 😅 I am homeschooling my two older boys (I have four kids). At about the 5 min mark you started to say how you could see the difference with boys/girls when your daughter was about a year old. And with my daughter being my third baby, I totally related to that! She is just so different compared to my three boys. Anyways, thank you for this much NEEDED encouragement! ❤ New subscriber, here!
Hello! I have been loving your videos! I have five boys ranging from 19 to 3. We also have 3 girls and a baby on the way. During the winter months, when we can't get outside as much, we have made sure the garage was cleaned up for them to do physical activity in. Rip sticks, dart board, stilts, unicycle, and many other fun activities have been a welcome energy expender. Another thing that has been helpful with our boys is playing Legos or doing models while listening to audio books. This has been a wonderful way to get hours of books into their lives.
Thank you so much! So nice to meet you. I love meeting other homeschool moms! And congrats on another little blessing. :) These are all fantastic suggestions! I'm so glad you mentioned them so others can see and get ideas as well.
Mama of 3 boys here. Thank you for sharing your insight, esp the first one, they are not like us! Yes so much energy to get out, and best to keep it short. :) Love also getting good male mentors into their lives.
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve seen so many people lately sharing that they just end up sending their boys to public school for high school, and it’s been extremely discouraging to hear. So, thank you for sharing other solutions and tips for making it work through high school!
This has been extremely helpful for me a mother to 4 boys and 1 girl. They are definitely different but in a great way. I’m so happy I found your channel. Thank you again
Thank you sooo much for this video! I have 3 boys, oldest is 4 and youngest is just 3 months. I foresee more in our future 😄 We are still in the pre-k stage of homeschool but I am gathering wisdom for the journey. Your channel is a tremendous blessing. God bless you and your beautiful family!
Thank you for sharing this! homeschooling two boys 12 and 9. We recently joined Boy Scouts and there is a parkour gym not far from us. We have many flexible seating choices, because sometimes sitting in a chair or at a desk just isn't working. Our current struggle is having them wake up at a decent time to start school work.
You are so welcome! That's great that you have something so close that gives them a chance to get their energy out. Having them get up at a decent time is a challenge we have with our boys occasionally as well!
I have 3 boys and 1 girl. Our girl is a newborn. I can’t wait to see the differences. She already babble so much more than my boys did 🙃 I just started homeschooling my oldest son, a first grader, and my second son, a preschooler. I appreciate this video!
Me too! It sounds like we got a lot of similarities! My three oldest are boys, ages 6, 5 and 3 and my youngest is a girl 13 months old. Oldest is a first grader and my second son is also a pre-k!
Ha!! It is fun to encounter similar families!!! We jumped in to homeschooling this month so we’re very new to the game! But we all really like it so far. An out of state move prompted it.
Thank you for sharing this information. Your later point about setting your sons into situations with other men is on point! I need to encourage my husband to integrate my son into more of his "manly" endeavors. Also very thankful for your recommendations for Durenda Wilson (whom I'd read on and off but forgotten about) and the new-to-me Generation Cedar.
Thank you so much for this helpful video!! These are all things that will benefit me and my son. If there is one thing that I've learned about raising boys (6 kids, two of whom are boys), is that when I need to have a serious conversation or give them constructive criticism, it's best to do it when we are side-by-side doing something physical, rather than face to face. So like going for a walk, doing the dishes together, even driving in the front seat of the car together. It really makes them feel less confronted.
Thank you for sharing!! 🥺 my boy is 10, and has been feeling “confronted” lately (perfect word usage)… I’m sure it’s the pre-teen stuff coming on … I never put it together that he listens to me a lot better if we are talking while on a walk, or doing dishes etc.
Boys are physical….when my daughter was in public school, the teacher said she would have the two “rowdy” boys with her in her group during a field trip. It was apparent they had a hard time listening throughout class. The teacher then commented how well behaved both boys were during the field trip. It was a no brainer! they were extremely smart, but needed to move around, they were the most interested during the field trip cause they got to see and touch. I never forgot that.
I have 3 boys ages 12, 8 and 6. Yes, they are SO different from me and it takes awhile to see all the differences. And yes, my boys love getting good grades and they have also done shuttle runs to get their energy out. 😂I really appreciated your thoughts on the importance of sons being with their father especially as they get older. My 12 year old does his school work in his Dad’s office and can learn a lot about my husbands’s work while he’s there with him. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Great video! Thank you!
Thank you! That's wonderful that your son can work in your husband's office! I think it's so important for them to spend as much time with dad or other positive male role models as possible.
Everything you said about young boys could describe my oldest daughter! Very physical, needing a challenge especially a physical one, sending them (my two girls) to run or doing jumping jacks while learning math facts, easily distracted just a lot of energy. More the temperament of their dad so I ask him for suggestions. My son is only 4 but he loves to cuddle and chat (my oldest also talks plenty). In our family one of the differences is that my son seems to be more interested in pleasing mom than the girls are. They are all three plenty competitive lol. Oh but one thing I relate to my son definitely breaks more things. Our oldest was destructive too as a preschooler but the boy seems to really love smashing things. Like build with duplo and then smash it 😂
Thanks so much. I’m confused first year homeschooling. How do you know your kids are learning what their supposed to be. Ever curriculum is so different! Just want my kids behind
I don't measure my kids by what everyone else in school is learning. Our goal is a little progress every day. I prioritize teaching them to read, write, and do basic math. After that gets going, we add the other things. I touch on this a lot in my videos. In these DIL ones I talk about how it looks in our home. ruclips.net/video/ZrareZi0ViI/видео.htmlsi=UeB3L11bA4NSRPfT ruclips.net/video/DG1-lCDb39M/видео.htmlsi=2Yl72-cqhHyuRiee
I really appreciate this. 💙 I only have one boy, my third child. He is so different from my two older girls. It can be frustrating because I’m used to my girls, they are excited to sit down and read with me. My son who is 5 now, doesn’t sit down for too long. He loves being chased, jumping on the trampoline (we have small one where I hold on to him), he loves when I’m more animated and tickle him throughout our lessons. But yea I found it funny when you said they break things, because that’s what he does 😭 we got him some bubble wrap for him to pop recently and that seems to calm him down. But yea he has lots more energy compared to my girls. 😅 I’m amazed at moms that have more than one boy, I have to learn lots from them so I’ll hopefully check out the people you mentioned.
Thank you for this video. Have you read the book: “Mother & Son, The Respect Effect” by Emerson Eggerichs? It’s very insightful regarding how boys thrive in their relationships with their moms when they feel respect by her in how she speaks and relates to him. It’s an AWESOME book and I recommend it to all mothers of boys.
You're welcome! :) I haven't read it! I did read his Love and Respect marriage book and it was so helpful. I'll definitely have to add that to my list! Thanks for sharing that with everyone!
This video came in a really good time for me as I was just talking to my husband about this yesterday and he had to have a talk with our six-year-old. I have two daughters and my son is the youngest so I guess it’s just a learning curve for me, because he never wants to sit still and do his work 😂
My mother in law is ALWAYS buying coloring kits for my boys....they go straight on to someone else because there is no interest in it. It's hilarious😂 I tell her they're not interested and she continues to buy....😂😂😂
Its almost as if YT could read my mind. I was talking to my husband recently about how different it'll be for me once our son is here. We have 2 daughters, 8 and 3 YO. Im due with our son in June. Its definitely going to change things. My girls love to write and read books (my toddler is already starting to read). I fully expect my son to not want to read or write until he's at closer to 7. I have no idea what to expect for homeschooling my son. Thanks for some insight! I enjoyed this video.
I have found having 2 boys of my own and 2 girls to be a different outcome in some respects. My son's are the oldest and the middle. And yes they are full of energy. But they love coloring and art projects too. My youngest son loves to be outside, he's 4, and if he could dig all day he would. I'm wondering though, what to do when my 8yr old son is so distracted that he won't do anything at all, he just freezes all day. Any tips? (One thing I think that helped was his comfort level in the work that he's doing.) For example in the summer he has been practicing reading and speed drills in math and finally starting to love the challenge. Going from 2 hours to 40 mins to almost 15min. The very first time he had ever done them though he only took 15 min he regressed immensely. I'm not sure why? I'm sure from something I did, but I just don't know what? Pushed too much? I asked my son how I thought he was doing in reading and maybe because I push him so much he thought not so well I was shocked and told him he's doing excellent. How do you not push? My youngest son loves the push he's riding his bike before his oldest sister. Thank you for your video it was very helpful. I'm very inspired by your big beautiful family.❤😊🙏🕊️
Thank you! Not knowing you son, it's hard to be able to give specific advice. I could keep lessons short as much as possible. It's ok to push for short periods of time. All kids are different, so it may take a little longer for you to figure out what works for him. I hope you can find some good solutions!
Holy cow, yes they are different. My girls are content for hours and hours of play and my son is younger then them and just acts like a caged animal. He gets super angry and destructive. I've noticed he does this when he is bored. I'm always trying to make sure he has a chore or two and then goes outside. The outside saves my sanity!
Maybe you address this elsewhere but, how do you balance teaching boys AND girls on the daily basis? I have 1 girl and 3 boys and it's easy for me to do what the boys need because they're the majority, but hard to know how to do both with my daughter in mind. Thoughts?
Great question! I don't think I have addressed this specifically, but I do try to connect with each of my kids individually every day. I cover that in this video. ruclips.net/video/LWk_XWJWcYs/видео.htmlsi=AdDspOK1BdH0bBbe I think if you are intentional to listen to your kids, you will learn about what's important to them and find little ways that you can help meet their needs.
I love to see more and more dads homeschooling!! I hope that some dads can benefit from what I have to share, but my content is geared toward moms because that's what I know. :)
Thanks for the video. I have a two year old son who is very active, won't sit on my lap for long, and does not like coloring. He is also a late talker but recently became very interested in numbers and will count from 1-10 in order. He started talking more after he learned his numbers. I kept worrying there was something wrong but I see now I need to meet him where he is at! He's also very wary of people who arent family and will scream in fear if people try to reach out and touch him. Does anyone have any advice on this?
We use Singapore math. I am a facilitator, helping them as they come to new concepts, but it progresses in a way that the kids can do a lot on their own which is so helpful.
Lots of free play and reading aloud. Outside play, puzzles, lego's, blocks, card and board games. Cooking and housework alongside mom and dad. If he's developmentally ready, start reading and writing, but I'd keep it very low key. 15-45 minutes a day. Reading: Bob Books Writing: Handwriting Without Tears Math: RightStart Math or Singapore I love Ambleside Online Year 0. Five in a Row is also good.
My Grandson will tell me to pretend that I don't believe that he can do something. I guess it makes him motivated to prove me wrong. He knows I believe in him, I just have to pretend. 😂🤷🏼♀️
This video is so good. You brought up independent math. We have been doing saxon math, which we have been really happy with. Our kids can work fairly independently by grade four. In gr. 4 there are the Dive videos and so they get the lesson through that or simply by reading the lesson in their books. My son is in gr. 2 so he still has to wait to get his lesson from me. Lately he has been talking about how he is wanting to do math the way his older sister who is in gr. 4 does it. This method doesn't start until grade four. I think you do Singapore math. Do you find that in gr. 3 they are able to do the math on their own? I'm wondering if it would be a good option for him as he likes to work quickly through his work. It might be beneficial if he doesnt have to wait for me. Thank you!
If your son is a somewhat strong reader, Christian Light has easy-to-follow structured math lessons that are made to be child-led. I started my kids on that curriculum for 1&2 grade math and they excelled with it. After they did the bulk of their review work in those individual lessons, I would just go over any new info (but the majority of the time they knew what to do from reading the lesson). They are now naturally self-starters when it comes to math.
Thank you so much! Yes, we do Singapore Math (except for my daughter who is doing Saxon for Algebra I). Yes! For the most part, they can work on their own, in Level 3, although, I did find that they weren't able to get all the way through both books in Level 3 by the end of the year because it gets a little more challenging at that level. But I am ok with them learning at their own pace, as long as they are working hard.
Oh my, six months! Do you have a gym nearby you can join? That would be great if it's an option for you. Otherwise, I say invest in some good outdoor gear and outdoor hobbies.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING, YOU ARE A FANTASTIC MOTHER AND YOU ARE A FANTASTIC LADY AS WELL, YOU DO A FANTASTIC JOB WITH AND TO YOUR CHILDREN, ITS NOT ESSY WITH TEN CHILDREN, BUT YOU ARE AMAZING, AND YOU VE GOT IT ALL PLANNED OUT, YOUNGER CHILDREN DO YOUNGER CHILDREN THINGS, WHEREAS OLDER ONES DO OLDER ONES, BUT ITS AWESOME OF YOU TO READ TO THEM ALL, FOR THEY WILL ALL ABSORB WHAT YOU ARE READING TO THEM, AND EVEN THE YOUNGER ONES, A LITTLE GIRL COLOURING, OR ONE DOUNG VERY EASY MATHS, OR MAYBE A SHORT COMPOSITION, WILL RETAIN SOME, AND ITS EQUALLY AWESOME WHEN, AFTER LUNCH, YOU ALL GATHER TOGETHER IN THE SITTING ROOM AND YOU READ TO THEM SCIENCE, HISTORY AND SUCH, AND ITS GREAT THE DISCUSSION THAT ENSUES, FOR EVEN THE YOUNGER ONES WILL LEARN ABOUT INDIANS AND WARS, ALSO SCIENCE, FOR EXAMPLE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLANT CELL AND AN ANIMAL CELL, OR WHATS THE SUN, ETC, AND THEY ALL LEARN, AND THEIR QUESTIONS AND YOUR ANSWERS ARE CHARACTERISTIC FOR THAT AGE, THEIR AGE, AND, ALTHOUGH FOR THE LITTLE ONES, WHAT YOU READ MAY BE TOO COMPLICATED, AT THE SAME TIME IT GIVES THEM A ROUGH IDEA, AND ITS A SPLENDID WAY OF DOING THINGS, BECAUSE THEY WILL RETAIN SOME OF IT FOR SURE, AND WILL ASK YOU QUESTIONS ABOUT IT, AND YOU WILL EXPLAIN IT TO THEM, ADAPTING IT MORE TO THEIR AFE, WHICH FOR SURE YOUD DO ANYWAY,. ANYWAY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, HAVING ALL THEM SITTING AT THE DINING ROOM TABLE, DOING DIFFERENT CLASSWORK, MIGHT CONFUSE THEM WHILE YOU READ THEM ALOUD AS WELL, MID MORNING LIKE, THEY GET DISTRACTED, WHEREAS THEY NEED TO BE CONCENTRATED, AND IN A WAY THEY D BE MUCH BETTER OFF IN THEIR OWN BEDROOM OR IN ANOTHER PART OF THE HOUSE, FOR THEY NEED THEIR SPACE ETC, BUT AT THE SAME TIME ITS QUITE GOID FOR THEM TO BE ALL TOGETHER WITH YOU AND THE OTHERS IN THE SAME ROOM, SITTING AT THE SAME TABLE, FOR YOU NEED TO REUNITE THEM SOMEWHERE EVERY DAY FOR A FEW HOURS, BECAUSE IT MAKES IT MUCH EASUER BOTH FOR YOU AND FOR THEM, YOU ARE WITHIN EASY REACH AND THEY CAN ALWAYS TURN TO YOU FOR HELP, AND YOU ARE FANTASTIC , ALSO BECAUSE YOU LET THEM SLEEP TILL A DECENT TIME, INSTEAD OF DEORIVING THEM OF SLEEP, WHICH MANY OTHER PARENTS INSIST ON DOING EVEN IF ITS UNFAIR TOWARDS THEIR KIDS, SO CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE MOTHER THAT YOU ARE, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !
Thank you so much for all your kind words! After doing this for several years, we've learned how to make things work, but it has been a learning process for sure!

@@OurLifeHomeschooling thank you this actually helps
Holy cow, yes they are different. My girls are content for hours and hours of play and my son is younger then them and just acts like a caged animal. He gets super angry and destructive. I've noticed he does this when he is bored. I'm always trying to make sure he has a chore or two and then goes outside. The outside saves my sanity!
I can relate! Yes! Outside time is so good for them!
I cover that in this video. ruclips.net/video/LWk_XWJWcYs/видео.htmlsi=AdDspOK1BdH0bBbe
I think if you are intentional to listen to your kids, you will learn about what's important to them and find little ways that you can help meet their needs.
How about regular homeschooling dads???? 😁✌️
13:00 small hands and beautiful baby faces are gone forever 😢😢 I am not ready to let it go 😢😢 how did our parents survived that
I know! They grow up so fast!
What math did you use that they did by themselves?
We use Singapore math. I am a facilitator, helping them as they come to new concepts, but it progresses in a way that the kids can do a lot on their own which is so helpful.
Good video but my son is not a typical boy. He's not active or connected to his dad.
You are not alone. Our society needs more male leadership starting with their own fathers.
Is there a specific curriculum you’d recommend for a 5 year old boy for kindergarten?
Lots of free play and reading aloud. Outside play, puzzles, lego's, blocks, card and board games. Cooking and housework alongside mom and dad. If he's developmentally ready, start reading and writing, but I'd keep it very low key. 15-45 minutes a day.
Reading: Bob Books
Writing: Handwriting Without Tears
Math: RightStart Math or Singapore
I love Ambleside Online Year 0. Five in a Row is also good.
What math curriculum did you end up switching to?
We do Singapore Math, US Edition. I really like it!
My Grandson will tell me to pretend that I don't believe that he can do something. I guess it makes him motivated to prove me wrong. He knows I believe in him, I just have to pretend. 😂🤷🏼♀️
Haha, that's funny! Boys are so fun!
CTC math is great for the upper grades as well. My middle schoolers use it. Straight to the point, independent, flexible, etc.
How to do when you live 6 months in snow :( I have 3 boys
Oh my, six months! Do you have a gym nearby you can join? That would be great if it's an option for you.
Otherwise, I say invest in some good outdoor gear and outdoor hobbies.
We loved the snow when we were kids. My kids did too. Really, they can still play ball or almost anything else in the cold just as if it was warm.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING, YOU ARE A FANTASTIC MOTHER AND YOU ARE A FANTASTIC LADY AS WELL, YOU DO A FANTASTIC JOB WITH AND TO YOUR CHILDREN, ITS NOT ESSY WITH TEN CHILDREN, BUT YOU ARE AMAZING, AND YOU VE GOT IT ALL PLANNED OUT, YOUNGER CHILDREN DO YOUNGER CHILDREN THINGS, WHEREAS OLDER ONES DO OLDER ONES, BUT ITS AWESOME OF YOU TO READ TO THEM ALL, FOR THEY WILL ALL ABSORB WHAT YOU ARE READING TO THEM, AND EVEN THE YOUNGER ONES, A LITTLE GIRL COLOURING, OR ONE DOUNG VERY EASY MATHS, OR MAYBE A SHORT COMPOSITION, WILL RETAIN SOME,
AND ITS EQUALLY AWESOME WHEN, AFTER LUNCH, YOU ALL GATHER TOGETHER IN THE SITTING ROOM AND YOU READ TO THEM SCIENCE, HISTORY AND SUCH, AND ITS GREAT THE DISCUSSION THAT ENSUES, FOR EVEN THE YOUNGER ONES WILL LEARN ABOUT INDIANS AND WARS, ALSO SCIENCE, FOR EXAMPLE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLANT CELL AND AN ANIMAL CELL, OR WHATS THE SUN, ETC, AND THEY ALL LEARN, AND THEIR QUESTIONS AND YOUR ANSWERS ARE CHARACTERISTIC FOR THAT AGE, THEIR AGE, AND, ALTHOUGH FOR THE LITTLE ONES, WHAT YOU READ MAY BE TOO COMPLICATED, AT THE SAME TIME IT GIVES THEM A ROUGH IDEA, AND ITS A SPLENDID WAY OF DOING THINGS, BECAUSE THEY WILL RETAIN SOME OF IT FOR SURE, AND WILL ASK YOU QUESTIONS ABOUT IT, AND YOU WILL EXPLAIN IT TO THEM, ADAPTING IT MORE TO THEIR AFE, WHICH FOR SURE YOUD DO ANYWAY,. ANYWAY,
BUT AT THE SAME TIME, HAVING ALL THEM SITTING AT THE DINING ROOM TABLE, DOING DIFFERENT CLASSWORK, MIGHT CONFUSE THEM WHILE YOU READ THEM ALOUD AS WELL, MID MORNING LIKE,
THEY GET DISTRACTED, WHEREAS THEY NEED TO BE CONCENTRATED, AND IN A WAY THEY D BE MUCH BETTER OFF IN THEIR OWN BEDROOM OR IN ANOTHER PART OF THE HOUSE, FOR THEY NEED THEIR SPACE ETC,
BUT AT THE SAME TIME ITS QUITE GOID FOR THEM TO BE ALL TOGETHER WITH YOU AND THE OTHERS IN THE SAME ROOM, SITTING AT THE SAME TABLE, FOR YOU NEED TO REUNITE THEM SOMEWHERE EVERY DAY FOR A FEW HOURS, BECAUSE IT MAKES IT MUCH EASUER BOTH FOR YOU AND FOR THEM, YOU ARE WITHIN EASY REACH AND THEY CAN ALWAYS TURN TO YOU FOR HELP, AND YOU ARE FANTASTIC , ALSO BECAUSE YOU LET THEM SLEEP TILL A DECENT TIME, INSTEAD OF DEORIVING THEM OF SLEEP, WHICH MANY OTHER PARENTS INSIST ON DOING EVEN IF ITS UNFAIR TOWARDS THEIR KIDS,
SO CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE MOTHER THAT YOU ARE, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !
Thank you so much for all your kind words! After doing this for several years, we've learned how to make things work, but it has been a learning process for sure!
