  • Wheee! This is Art Vlog 52. Hooray for one year of posting a new art vlog every single week. This week I'm chatting about the fact that not being great and learning are natural parts of the creative process. It's important to keep in mind that social media is a highlight reel and not real life for most folks. Let me know what you're working on right now!

Wish I'd received this message when I was young. Great talk!

Thanks for this one. I’m learning a lot from you one of the best things so far was reminding me that it’s supposed to be hard and it’s supposed to take time to learn. I can be impatient and your reminders are a huge help. Thank you.

You actually make the idea of failing and evolving and creating quite liberating instead of scary. My sister and I started a youtube channel a while ago but are not very active on it because we don't have a crisp vision of what it is all about, just some ideas. I think you are right about creating before you have something perfectly planned out. Thanks Julie!

Great video Julie! This is why I love taking your classes, because, like you, I’m interested in all sorts of art. I like watercolor and acrylic painting, print making, stamp carving and collage making; just to name the major areas. Of course I also enjoy your classes because you ARE a fantastic teacher! Your classes are not set up so that students just replicate a piece of your work. Everyone does their own art. You really see a student’s art and you are able to help that student through the process of creating their own work. I tend to focus on birds, flowers and landscapes. Abstract art is not my first choice of subject matter, but it doesn’t matter, because you focus on what I am doing. That makes classes with you productive and fun. I also liked the point you made today about art being a journey from beginner to a more experienced artist. You just have to keep going until you get there! If that wasn’t absolutely true, I would have given up long ago! So thanks for all the encouraging words!

I'm relatively new to watercolor and acrylics. You touch on a bit of everything! Wow! I'm a seasoned cardmaker, so tip and tricks are always welcome. ( I made my first Christmas card 48 yrs ago, and that started my hobby.)

literally right now as I watch: swatching out my new Gansai Tambi set that my daughter gifted me (the one with 24 new colours). Right now generally in my art? I'm mid-way through a 10 week abstract art course that is triggering SO many ideas and avenues to explore I'm going to be busy for months, I think... but also feeling a little overwhelmed as well. Need to focus down on one idea, explore that, and then see what else after that. Exciting new composition ideas that I can't wait to play with... but also ideas for carving... and book making... Like you, I enjoy all sorts of things and I've learnt to not let that bother me. You do hear it said, or people worry, that not focusing hard on one particular art practice can hold you back, but I think having other things to go to when you get stuck on a thing or it's not working and you need to step away, or even an idea just needs time to percolate around in your brain for a bit, is SUPER helpful. You can satisfy those creative urges, sometimes even find things feed back into other art practices, and it helps you to improve across all your art interests. Do you find the same?

I would love to learn more about developing an art practice. It’s been on my mind for a while.

People throw the word authentic around easily, often misusing it to the point it warrants a significant eye-roll. This share encapsulates a level of authenticity which I (and probably many others) need like water!
We are many things, we are interested in many things, we struggle with many things, and depending on the day or even the time of any specific day we are drawn to a specific thing. We become intensely focused, we get bored and move on, we paint, glue, cut, tear, stamp, collage, love things, hate things, get confused, feel excited, feel lost, feel directionless and live for the next sigh of contentment - "wow, I did that!" We stress that we are unfocused, disjointed, and allow that struggle to take us down a dark path.
BUT (capitals intended), collectively all of these things make us who we are as creatives. We continually become catalysts of all that's come before, incorporating it into our current interest and producing art that is closer to our soul expressing itself.
With over a decade of incredible and well documented visibility, it is both courageous and incredibly kind of you to share this perspective. Thank you!

I enjoyed this video. I watch alot of RUclips for various reasons but find that if the channel content remains “samey” (technical term LOL!) & repeats itself I get bored & eventually unsubscribe. I encounter a problem that I’ve been largely unable to find a solution to. If you have ideas I’d love to hear them: I look at my work (can be at any stage of the process), & get stuck feeling that it wasn’t what I wanted or intended, put it away, get it out later (usually months later), look again, think good lord that’s not so bad, in fact its ok I can work with it & often proceed to finish from there. I’d like to truncate this - its sooooooo sloooooowwww. I annoy myself. 😂
