Getting to play as him might have killed his mystique. He was an overpowered character and the devs would either have to nerf him or allow him to one shot nearly every enemy.
But it certainly would have been neat. It could work if he were something like an optional/secret party member and to obtain him you'd need to be OP yourself.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's pronounced LAvitz, not LuhvItz. (Accent on the "A", not the "I". Also the "A" being a soft vowel as in "Cat") Dart screaming his name with several "A's" is my evidence for this. It was "Laaaaaaaaviiiiiiiitz!!!" not "Laviiiiiiiiiitz!!!" Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

I watched your entire 1:01:07 review of this game and I have to tell you honestly, And I don't say this too much for most reviewer, if ever, but I agreed with pretty much every single point that you said about the game. Especially the music. I've heard lots of awesome soundtracks for different games before but I would have to say, and this is a bold statement by me saying this, that The Legend of the Dragoon has the best soundtrack collectively of any game out there. My favourite themes of the game are tense moments theme where something is about to occur, Deningrad (thank you for making that one a major highlight!! Was very happy you did so.), the Ancient cities Aglis and Mayfil, and the boss themes 2 & 3. I know music is subjective, but I literally can't think of a single bad song in this game and that's saying something.
Overall, you did a fantastic review and is pretty much the only reviewer that has done a half decent review of this game. Now I know you can't touch upon every single in a game this big, however, I'm really surprised you didn't even mention what I would have to say is the worst part of the game and for me, I would argue is the lock combination puzzle on the abandoned ghost ship in I believe chapter 2 if I'm not mistaken (if I am, then chapter 3). To me, that entire puzzle felt much harder then necessary and while it is an interesting concept, having to go from point 'A' to point 'B' with a high risk of those blue flaming skull ghost encounters is redundant as all hell every time you run out of tries and want to try again. Especially when trying to get the Ultimate Wargod. I know you don't have to do it and is an optional section of the game, but just to try and get this item by guessing a 3 digit combo with 4 numbers with only 2 tries was absolutely hair-pulling, ball-bustingly awful and led to much frustration.

    • @RegretfulDeadMan
      @RegretfulDeadMan  8 лет назад +1

I'm glad you enjoyed it, belive me when I say it was well worth the 60+ hours I put into it as a whole and I'm glad that it turned out just about as good as I could have hoped , and in regards to the lock combination puzzle, I gave up on it after getting to the third combo, I just found it redundant and wasn't worth mentioning, although, I'm disappointed in myself for not touching on the ultimate wargod, I did have a bit to say about it, namely how it defeats the purpose of the addition system and renders the gameplay 100% turn based which for someone like me is pretty much a cardinal sin of game design, but like you said, in a game as big as this it's nearly impossible to touch on everything.

I'm sure this has been addressed before but at around 14:35 you talk about how everyone suggests Shana(and Miranda)/Meru as party members and the reason is high/highest speed and highest/high magic damage respectively, which makes the spell items stupidly strong (like two to four thousand damage each one) before adding in power up/power down. The other reason people suggest Meru is because her speed compliments using the power up/power down combo nicely on Haschel and whatever poor sap he's super-murdering. If you do your turn timing right, you can even kill Melbu before phase 3, in roughly 4 minutes total. In fact that's the ideal speedrunning strategy since those latter two phase transitions take so long. So, definitely worth a try if you want to savagely punch his face in if you ever feel like replaying. This is definitely one of if not my favorite game and I've learned... Too many things about it, as I'm sure is already evident, so if you have any questions you come across while writing a new review feel free to message me or something. Since uh, I could probably go on forever and RUclips comments aren't really the best medium for that.

LoD is my favorite game of all time. Love what you did for this review, and I just hope they remake it with better graphics honestly. FYI you should definitely choose Shana to do a play through with. Pick a third that has fun addition development, so that the lack of additions for Shana doesn't drag you down because the White Silver Dragoon is absolutely overpowered as fuck. You just put the magical hat on her so she has 200MP, use special so she gets a boost in power, and watch the destruction that is the White silver dragon attack because it is ruthless and it heals you back to full. ALso, Meru has really fun additions and her mix of semi powerful additions, magic resistance, healing, and magic attack is worth it.

If there's one thing that always stuck with me, it was how this game managed to subvert a few cliches (almost till the end) while using the world building to subtly convey certain plot points.
Shana for example was set up as the wholesome pretty best friend who loved you almost immediately, and who's love matured in your absence as well as during the journey. A common trope that was often used back then, but has been used even more by now.
Then the big twist: she's actually housing the soul of the entity that, once combined with it's true body, will destroy all life on their planet. Shocking and a nice subversion of expectations, but then it gets even better. All that charm and her innate ability to get just about anyone to like her? That was the moon child's ability in order to further the entity's goals, and just about everyone, including the white dragoon spirit, was affected.
Im sure dart truly cared about her, but was his romantic love a slow but steady evolution of his feelings? Or brought about by the allure of the moon child?
I understand more now why so many hated Miranda and shana in various ways to various degrees, but I think, had shana perhaps not been spared, but absorbed along with melbu, and used the last of her life to save everyone somehow (like taking control long enough for them to deal a killing blow), that would've made her journey far better, and cemented her as a pretty incredible character.
Also, even at 9 when I first played this game, I felt like dart got 'along' with lavitz a whole lot more.

Dart and Hascel have good attack strength, but Meru has high speed and can get like 2 or 4 turns off if you give her the dancer’s shoes. Her last addition has 600% damage output, her dragoon magic is strong if you equip her correctly and her second spell is a free healing breeze that removes all debuffs which is a good help.

    I enjoyed your review.
People say Meru's the strongest but I never really used her
as I didn't like her additions. I hated Shiranda because they just had the bow and arrow but they possess strong healing dragoon magic.
The stardusts is easy to find if you play JPRG games like me where I talk to everything and everybody. I also explore every nook and cranny. I found the first stardust in the game just by coincidence. I had 27 during my first playthrough although I didn't finish. One of the bosses stopped me from my completion. The boss is the stereotypical boss in an RPG where it's the end of the road and once you go forward you can't go back to the main map.
I didn't like Miranda's attitude but she was only bitter cause of her childhood. I remember when she slapped Rose. I wanted her to hit Miranda back.
It foreshadows just like many other RPGs. It was actually the first RPG I ever played. It introduced me to be prepared for anything and everything in a game. I learn to save, save, and save.
I'm surprised it wasn't included with the PS2 launch titles just because.

So much quality with this review. I watched it all the way through. Really good montage of key scenes at the end. I always like defeating Faust at the end of my playthroughs. I beat him once with Dart, Meru, and Shana and last playthrough, I one shotted him with Dart, Albert, and Meru thanks to those buff items and Albert's ultimate addition. The addition system is so rewarding when you get the timing down. It's certainly not for everyone when you introduce a reflex/timing based system on top of a turn based rpg experience. One downside of things like the additions system in TLoD (and modern, even more action-oriented features) is that some people with disabilities play jrpgs because they are almost the only kind of game they can play due to coordination issues, or motion sickness (not as relevant here but applies to camera movement and rendering). I know someone like this, and modern RPGs are driving them mad with the requirements of the semi-real-time battle systems and more dramatic camera movements. It's an edge case and a minority issue, but thought I'd mention it.
Personally, as someone who really has a soft spot for TLoD, the additions system was engaging and rewarding to a point, and was a nice progression as you moved through the game, it didn't do enough to take the edge off the repetitive battle system (and the sometimes very high battle encounter rate).
In the end it is one of my top rated games too, though. The story was really moving for me.

Albert and Rose/Haschel is the easy team to use. Shana, if you know how to utilize her magics (her magic stats are far better than everyone else) and dragoon abilities, she's one of the top. Get her the Amulet to double her MP, and maybe grind her dragoon lvl to max. Her White Silver Dragon summon is legendary, almost all bosses couldn't last 5 turns, and you don't even need healing items; together with the magic items, Shana is pretty unstoppable. Albert/Shana is the best team imo.

Wut. 'Dragoons fall off from disc 3 on'. Yeah you can't use them for DD (you can totally use them on Grand Jewel, but only one turn/bar at a time), but other than that, Disc 3 is where they become OP as hell. Even reading other people on here saying Meru and Shana are 'good because they can heal'. Just. No.
They're good because they have the highest Magic stats and speed in the game. This means they get 2-3 turns for every enemy turn, and on top of that, they can usually murder-death-kill anything before it even gets a turn. This also makes the final boss 20 minutes, not 40.
Since you mentioned it specifically: ruclips.net/video/2Pqvc1kunT4/видео.html, here's a video where Meru decimates the Divine Dragon Spirit in three turns (in a row).
That said- I liked the video. It does the game a lot of justice. It's always been my all-time favorite.

Meru as a healer/damage dealer with that high speed fixes the whole dragoon as a liability hell even the white silver dragoon shana/Miranda could be an anchor. I’ve played this game so many times and my favorite setup although not optimal was Albert and Rose as my two other party members. Albert with the barrier spell ftw! Also my dad saw roses demons gate spell and called it vaginal spew. Made us laugh and was a great childhood memory. I’m not 100% on this but I think Albert and meru might be best combo

39:28 Honestly i did not see that one coming haha Great video, i stayed for the whole thing. You know, it just pains me to know that sony thinks of LoD as a failure, it most definitely isn't. I've played ff7 and it just doesn't stand out to me, not trying to be biased or anything but thats just how it comes off. I'm so sick of hearing ff7 fans suck hard on sephiroth and clouds dicks so much, their story is basic at this point. At least with LoD it wasn't all about Lloyd vs dart as opposed to the sephiroth vs cloud theme all throughout the game, we actually had variation going on here. but thats just an unpopular opinion, which to me is a lot better than agreeing with the masses

the whole point about no healing/revives while in dragoon form is why power gamers favourite party composition was dart shiranda meru, dart beind fairly balanced over all while shana and meru having high speed and magic attack stats as well as healing dragoon magic made it so you could easily be outputting the same amount of damage as any other party composition while still having the safety of healings and revives with 5 turn dragoons, its physically impossible to use all of shanas mana in 1 dragoon cycle if you only heal with her and then simply use a sun rhapsody when she transforms back, also meru and shiranda both synergise well with using the signet stone-speed up buff-speed down debuff combo you could use every boss fight due to them being repeatable items

And to think FFVII has a Prequel(Crisis Core FFVII), A sequel movie (FFVII Advent Children) & a sequel to the game & movie (Dirge Of Cerberus FFVII) yet still somehow needs a remake yet LoD has the potential for a Prequel (make it take place during the dragon campaign especially to make a certain couple of optional bosses more emotionally impactful) a remake/remaster to make graphics better & fix the translations or a sequel that deals with the next generation dragon knights & what Soa's true will is. That is what hurts the most, don't get me wrong, FFVII is good, but idk if it is as legendary as some make it out to be

Meru and Haschel were always my favorites. Plus Meru has a ridiculously high Magic Attack stat, second only to Shana/Miranda, and extremely high speed that makes those item spells much more worth using. Also, her last addition, Perky Step, has a 600% damage ratio, again the highest of all additions. She is very underrated IMO.

I only had one complaint, and that's that Meru's theme didn't make it into the music mentioned. Like, Meru joining and earning her Dragoon Spirit were my favorite parts of the game because of that music. Also, along the line of the Additions, since you did mention Legend Casque and Armor of Legend, if you are remaking the video, Ultimate Wargod should be mentioned for its "Screw you game, I only wanna play my favorites" enabling ability. The 10000 Gold isn't too hard to earn even in Disc 1 with a bit of grinding, 1000 Gold in each dungeon area plus 10 Yellow Birds, bada-bing! Great review man~

This is my favorite game. The additions made this game fun to play. yes it is different but turn based battles can make you tired this makes you pay attention. My only complaint was inventory space and that think the could have given Shana additions in the form of trick shots with the arrows. One last thing you say that you find Meru and Shana useless I but I disagree and I will explain why. Ture Shana does not have much in the attack. Her arrows don;t really do much unless they have an aliment like Bemuse arrows which can confuse an enemy. The fact is though she has the Highest magic stat in the game. I found best way to use her is use all the attack items you get like Burn out and dancing light because she will make them do more damage because of her high magic stat. Whens he gets her Dragoon Spirit it is even better because her dragoon is all about healing except for her second magic Star Children which was my favorite attacks by far and you can get it before you fight Frugeul a second time. With Meru it is a little different her attacks aren't really strong till you get her 3rd and 4th additions. Her magic though is only beat by Shanas and her dargoon also has a healing spell called Rainbow ring so she can be used as a healer in a pinch. There was one character i hated and that was miranda who takes Shanas place and it annoyed me

    • @doopliss6648
      @doopliss6648 5 лет назад

It's Rainbow Breath, you mixed up that with "Freazing Ring"and yes I agree with you totally. I played through the entire game with Shana, and with Miranda once she replaced shana, to the end, and same with Meru. I had more of hard time with Shana though, because of her being weak to physical attacks, and not having much HP, and with no additions, makes her almost useless physically, so gaining SP for her Dragoon is a pain, even with the spirit ring, and so it can sometimes take too long for her to have access to dragoon mode, and to lvl her dragoon. As for meru, she is definitely better to use, than Shana, significantly better. First of all, shes got additions, which instantly makes her better, especially in the long run, her Magic Defense, and Magic Attack are very high, unoticably lower than Shana's, and she is also quick af, which is important for someone with as low HP as her, and the fact that she gets a lot of turns, which means you can level her weak additions quickly, to get them out of the way, and once she has her best equipment, and best additions, everything about Meru makes her become probably the strongest character in the party, not to mention her Dragoon magic is so useful in many situations, because she has moves that hit hard on single enemies, gr8 healing magic, and 2 powerful all enemy attacks. Shana is sadly one of the least helpful characters to have in a party for most of the game, asside from the Ghost Ship Boss. My list from Party Members from weakest to strongest, from my knowledge from beating this game several times, and also getting every party member to max lvl (60) goes: (worst-best) Shana-Kongol-Albert-Rose-Haschel-Dart-Meru. :]

  • @boxingpanda4757

Great vid. I disagree with the notion that Albert is a glass cannon. He gets wrecked by magic, but by the time the game's difficulty ramps up enough to make that an issue, you should be able to afford a legendary casque, from which point he is extraordinarily tanky.
You probably know using special dragoon transformation makes damage of the element of the character using special deal 50% more damage, and its opposite deal 50% less. This makes Rose's Astral Drain a decent way to both deal damage and heal while in dragoon form until dragoons get out-shined by additions.
Meru has perhaps the highest potential, but it requires so much work that by the time you get her to that potential, you could have already beaten the game with Rose and Albert.
Shanna is pretty strong in boss fights if you manage your inventory space with the right attack items to kill bosses fast...but I feel like she makes random encounters, which I find less fun, more of a chore, while making boss fights, which are supposed to be epic, too much of a breeze.

When I read Rose's backstory and discovered Fate UBW Archer and his role as a CG way later on; I immediately knew that they were mostly the same in pretty much everything then I read Scathach too and learned what she went through. I can say that Rose is like a fusion between CG Emiya and Scathach, which her story even more tragic as well coming to find out what happens later to Zieg.
