- The Legend of Dragoon for PS1 had a confusing Story and Timeline for many players. I'll do my best to explain everything about the prologue to thus underrated JRPG.

btw, Melbu didnt just "curse him".
He petrified Zieg and then layed dorment in his Dragoon Spirit. When he called upon the power Melbu took him.

However, I'm not mad or anything. This video already explained the backstory of the game, which is the most intriguing and complicated for me. I already understood more than 90% of the lore, and this helped me grasp even more of it. Thank you very much! I highly appreciate your efforts!
Maybe Michael was an attempt to give the dragon some kind of biblical ties? Or it might be a translation error. Or maybe all the dragons had regular names. Feyrbrand was actually just Fred -- Fred the dragon.
Great explanation. One edit: In the game, it's explained that Melbu sealed his own spirit inside the red dragoon spirit stone slightly after casting the petrification spell on Zieg, in order to preserve himself as well. Though the petrification wore off, Zieg had no occasion to unleash his dragoon power because he swore to life as a pacifist before meeting the woman who would become his wife. On the day the Black Monster attacked, Zieg returned to face the Black Monster after escorting his family to safety and unleashed his Dragoon powers. In doing so, he released Melbu's sealed spirit from within the stone. Melbu immediately possessed Zieg's body and murdered Claire, as she returned to aid her husband defend the village.

I always wondered about Claire. Sure, it could've been Rose who killed her, because she would've had every reason to, but if it had been a possessed Zeig that would've been even more harsh. (Or she just died through some innocuous means trying to help people, like getting crushed in a falling building or smoke inhalation).
The game never explains how Claire died exactly. So there're 3 possible choices you can pick: 1) Killed by Zieg while possesed by Melbu. 2) Killed by Rose. 3) Killed by the flames, smoke, debris, etc.
I would have loved to see a scenario where the Black Monster is doing one of their usual rampages. But during the destruction of Neet, she sees Zieg in Dragoon Form, immediately stepping back, afraid of what they just saw. "Zieg...? Oh, it cannot be!" The Black Monster's ambient facade wears off, revealing Rose, and Zieg's expressions soften briefly. "...Rose? Rose!" The two approach one another and meet... A romantic moment, nevermind the fires of Neet reminding the audience that people are DYING...
But the moment is fleeting as Zieg twitches violently. "Z-Zieg? Zieg!" A few moments pass, and Zieg stops twitching, revealing a different set of expressions on his face. With an almighty backhand from her former lover, Rose is slapped until tomorrow as he flies off... Only to come back down and Flamethrower Claire because he just realized "Ewwww... This guy fucked a Hu-- TWO Humans! AOOAOAOOAHHH!! Oh neat, a rock? Wait? This stone? Meh! (Toss)"
I can't do Melbu Frahma any Justice with that portrayal (HOW DARE YOU), but I've been playing Final Fantasy 3/6 and couldn't help but inject some Kefka in there.
Don't forget that Claire is both Dart's mother and Haschel's daughter.

I remember when i first played LOD as a kid, I never realized that lol. Wasn't till later, when i was older, that i figured it out.

If I remember correctly Haschel heard Shana humming the lullaby to that one girl in the village and confronted her then she told him that she got that from Dart and Dart had told her that his mother sang it to him all the time.
As something of a lurk of your videos for a while I have to say your videos are so enjoyable and well made. I really can't imagine how much time these must take you between the playing, studying, filming, and post filming work. I hope that you don't stop making these videos. I say this selfishly because games today are becoming less and less complex and as a result I feel a strong pull to replay older games to experience better storytelling. Your videos allow me to scratch that itch without sinking all the time to play these games. No matter how big you get on RUclips I think these videos will always have a lot of value to offer! Just as a fellow fan of these games and this era I would love to see some day after the fantastic Legend of Dragoon videos about Grandia, Breath of Fire 3/4, Tales of Destiny, and Suikoden 2 (or any really). Keep up the amazing work man!

Also need time to actually play some of the games I've missed and re-play others. Case in point, I've never actually finished Legend of Dragoon, so that's holding up part 2 at the moment :D

Legend of Dragoon, the game that gave me my username and holds a special place in my gaming heart to this day. I still hope for a sequel/prequel/whatever however impossible it may seem these days. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Sony, make another Legend of Dragoon, and I will buy whatever system it is on.

2019 still no part 2
I was wondering when we were going to get another video from you but its like I said before you can't rush greatness. It's nice to see you take on this game which is another ps1 masterpiece and it has my favorite battle system of any jrpg that I've played. It also has some of my favorite battle music and boss battle music of all time. This game desperately needs a sequel but even though it sold enough copies to justify a greatest hits printing it just never lived up to final fantasy 7 levels, but its a great game nonetheless and hopefully getting a nice detailed analysis will get people to play the game for the first time.
+TheCompletionist I've always enjoyed the battle system of the game. The story can be a bit up and down, especially towards the latter half but it definetly warrants it's "overlooked" label

Would you consider the possibility that the original emperor Diaz was actually Charle Frahma in disguise all along?
She already opposed Melbu's thirst for power. It'd make sense for her to feel bad for the humans and want to help them. It makes more sense for the sister of the most powerful wingly to be instrumental in winning the war for humans, than it is for some random human named Diaz.
This would also explain the necessity for Diaz to wear a mask in the first place. If word got out that Charle, a Wingly, was leading the humans against Wingly subjugation, humanity's morale would flatline.
It also explains why Charle is so formal with Rose and Zieg. She was their commander all along.
It also explains why Rose is so certain Diaz is 'dead.' He isn't dead in the literal sense, the war is over, so Charle has no need for the facade of Diaz.
Lastly, it makes all the more sense for Melbu to want to masquerade as Emperor Diaz, instead of just coming up with a more original alias. What better way to get back at his sister for betraying him than to use the name and mask which once saved humanity, to then doom it?

berserkchip I really do like this idea, and it fits pretty snuggly into the plot. She'd already tried helping once by creating the signets to limit her brother's power, so when that didn't do enough (because the moon objects were created to destroy them just in case), I could believe she'd try going even farther to stop Melbu.
It just begs the question though, when did Charle create this Diaz persona that she then kept up long enough to become an actual Emperor?
@berserkchip I think Charle disguising as Diaz is a very far-fetched theory. Throughout the game it is clearly stated that Diaz was a human emperor and he died during the dragon campaign.
Charle was the leader of a neutral faction of winglies and didn't participate in the war at all. At some point during or before the war she made the signet spheres to reduce the power Melbu was getting from the soul of the Virage Embryo in hopes that SOMEHOW and SOMEDAY he would give up on his dictatorship. Really naive thinking if you ask me lol.
Also, I don't know why you say she was so formal with Rose and Zieg. She has a very ditzy personality and likes to call them by nicknames such as "Zieggy" "Rosie sweetiepie" lmao.
Trust me on this... right now I'm about to finish this game for the 7th time.
It both fits and doesn't fit, seeing as we don't get that much information about Diaz expect that he led the army of humans against the winglies and gathered the seven Dragoons to aid in the war. But Diaz died in the war, so if it was a facade by Charlie the war would have been the best way for Diaz to die as she no longer needed the act. Also her being a ditz might be an act as she is over 11000 years old, she might act a ditz just to make people underestimate her as she did make five signets to limit her brother's power.

you do realise that melbu frahma cast the petrify curse on zieg and at the same time sealed his own spirit inside the red-eyed dragon spirit so that when it was activated he could posses zieg after he tries to use it.
Just got the platinum trophy a few hours ago :) Was pretty easy. Still a super cool and charming game. The remake could be so good if ever developed. Imagine visiting and exploring all those beautiful and crazy environments with big budget visuals and a new camera perspective.
These are exceptionally well done. Please keep them up, there are a lot of games out there fans would love to see clarified!

LoD was a big game, great music, nice story, quite difficult maybe, the level up system was long.
The game was hard, I remember those parts where they keep talking about that divine gold dragon, i was like 'this one will crush my team'.
Remember also that special ambiance and that music when it was question of Vyrage dragons
2020 and this game still has me deep into its lore.
I love your story videos on games. It really clears some stuff I was a little confused about on some of my favorite games. One game series you may want to do after legend of Dragoon is final fantasy 13. Those games span thousands of years as well as having different time lines and have a rather complex plot.

I just finished replaying Chrono Trigger and I'm starting Chrono Cross again and thanks to your videos I'm enjoying the link between them so much more. I also have to replay Xenogears, it's been a long time.
I never finished Legend of Dragoon. I got stuck at the Ghost Ship for a few months because I didn't see a door in the hallway... yeah... that's the reason... and it's very embarassing. Anyways, I will finish it someday, and watching your videos I'm sure will help me enjoy the story even more, because even up to that point it already started to get a little confusing.

using a Dart you see wen he hits a monster with 3 Blue squares and the monster makes a Red square and you have to press the circle?

this game is probably one of my favorite games on PS 1, along with Chrono Cross. the battle system of this game is good. and the story .. although a bit confusing at first, it is one of the complex one. I can't seems to remember if I have finished the game or not though ...

Did the dragons really allied with the humans because winglies sealed the divine dragon? Was it not that the humans defeated the dragons and used the dragoon powers to command the dragons into war? Also, did Claire really died at the hands of the black monster (rose)? If i remembered correctly, the game did not mention that Dart found his mother's body other than just his father's dragoon spirit.
Are there any primary data out there that explains these untold mysteries?

Honestly this game should have had an anime adaptation. It was way ahead of its time but could have used a little more polish (and more than 20 items) and maybe more incentive to USE the dragoon as it became more of a hinderance later in the game. The story though. Awesome. It's just my kind of weird
bit you gotta measure the monster's speed to do the square if you fail Dart dont do nothing he can also do it to the boss attacks and Repeal them and the boss dont make the full attack making you win a clear boss fight 💪
Weird, I never had a problem figuring out this story - the game hints at literally every big reveal. I think some of the issues comes from the game's tone when treating its past as if it happened so long ago that none of it survived into the current time which we know is proven false constantly and consistently.

Jrpg is the best gaming genre ever. The story telling is timeless.
I wonder what were the other 102 species that were born from the fruits of the Divine Tree? I already know that the Minintos, Gigantos, Dragons, Humans, Winglies and Virage Embryo being the advanced species born from the fruit. But what about the other species born from the Divine Tree? Are they the Goblins, Orcs, Trolls, Dark Elves, Mermaids, Harpies, Minotaurs, Gnomes, Pucks, Gargoyles, those weird feline centaur hunters? What about the wildlife of the world like the wolves, those weird looking chipmunk raptors, those strange anteater looking beasts that people call horses for some reason, birds, mammoths, sea creatures and insects? Do they count as the species born from the Divine Tree? What was the 96th species that went extinct? What kind of creatures were they? And most of all, how is a giant embryo the size of a moon considered a species at all? I mean the purpose of the virage embryo is to birth the God of Destruction which is basically a singular being with god like power. How could one single god be considered a species? Wouldn’t it make more sense for the Virages to be the 108th and final species to be born from the fruit and the God of Destruction be their leader? I mean the Virages are basically born as an artificial weapon from the Virage Embryo. The reason why the Virages are loyal to Meblu Framha and his fellow Winglies is because he had the soul of the God of Destruction in him.

+Terracorrupt I have an Idea for a future one, ether before or after kingdom heart's..whichever one, but how about the entire Fire Emblem Timeline...from some of my reasurch there are 5 seprate timelines, all arn't connected like zelda, however due to events of many dlc packs of both Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates, AND due to some of the child units appearing in fate's timeline for reasons I am sure will spoil the story, I'm still playing fates, it IS possible for anyone from ANY TIMELINE to cross to each others timeling for whatever reason...like I said, if it's too hard it's fine, but I would wait awile before people have finished the game for awile for all the answers...but I'm bringing it up as just a suggestion.
