A resolution of the South China Seas territorial dispute would be great for so many countries. Just to clarify what the girl said about the US not having a significant impact on the Russo-Ukrainian war at 8:58 is false, the amount of aid the US has sent to Ukraine is higher than the next 5 organizations/countries' aid combined via Statista, additionally what kind of military aid Ukraine has been getting is also vital, in the first 2 months of the war; in the Kyiv front the use of Western-made NLAWs and Javelins helped bog down and force the Russians to abandon their objective of taking Kyiv. Apart from that, Ukraine started to gain the initiative when M777 Howitzers and HIMARS were delivered (this was back in September-October 2022 in Kharkiv Oblast where Ukraine battered Russia's First Guards Tank Army or just generally the elements of the Russian Army in Kharkiv Oblast and forced them to withdraw to Svatove-Kreminna Line), as well as during the winter when Russia was hitting Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Currently, while Ukraine continues to push for their Spring Counteroffensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast the American-made Bradley IFVs along with other Western-made tanks such as Leopards of diverse variants have been praised by the AFU for their crew protection capabilities. One more thing, with the delivery of the Patriot SAM System, comes greater air protection an example is how Russia's "unstoppable" Kh-47M2 Kinzhal Hypersonic Missile was shot down, and once Ukraine's Air Force receive F-16 fighter jets it'll be safe to assume that Ukraine will have a favorable contested airspace which would mean that these donations have made a significant impact in the war.

The Philippines and china are not the only ones that lay claim on these islands. Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and even Taiwan are also claiming the disputed islands for themselves. Its naive to think that the US is getting in the mix because it "cares" for Filipinos. Like the Chinese, the americans are also only looking after their own selfish interests. The addition of 5 more US military bases in the Philippines is never about protecting the Philippines from foreign invasion, its about the US protecting its interests in Taiwan's microchip industry which it's very reliant on for its weapons manufacturing industry to continue it's domination and hegemony across the world. Simple Question. How many countries has China invaded, colonized, and built military bases in?
Now ask yourself the same question about the US.
The colonial mentality is strong in Filipinos. Their country has been exploited by the US for economic and military gain while its people proudly hail them as saviours. It's largest trading partner is China, contributing to largest economic growth in decades. Althewhile receiving military aid and protection that solidifies its position as cannon fodder.

It was our Guerillas who fought hard for our country. And when everything's almost settled down, US came to Philippines again to "save" Filipinos. It's so nauseating. In the Treaty of Paris, they have the right to take advantage of our resources as if they are Filipinos. They wanted the land, but not the people. So there. They gave the Filipinos the "independence" because it's too much money to rehabilitate the country after the war. Also, they said that we're not white enough to be able assimilate to their culture. So don't make it appear like they're the saviours. They used us and are still using us for their advantage. Now between US and China, I am siding with neither. 1:14 No, the reality is that PH does NOT have sovereignty over those islands. When the US handed over its sovereignty to the PH, they SPECIFICALLY said it did NOT include the Spratly islands etc. So PH does NOT have legal sovereignty over those islands. PH just wish they did, and made their citizens to believe its theirs.
7:28 This guy is uninformed. Its not "illegal" per se if its no laws against it. ESPECIALLY when its disputed territory. PH does NOT have sovereignty over the islands, so its not "theirs". Its called "disputed territory" for a reason. Many countries claim these territories, not just China and PH.
7:35 You "won" because China was not even there to defend themselves. China was not there because China knew it was useless to go, as the current international laws present is incompatible with a countrys sovereignty claims. What that means is the current international maritime laws only define whats considered a countrys territory based on the 12nm distance from a countrys coastline, EEZ etc, but has no laws to define whether a piece of territory falls under the sovereignty of Country X or Country Y.
7:51 No, you cant forcefully implement it because that court you won that case from has ZERO authority to enforce anything. Even the US cant.
12:44 No, it was not "proven that it belongs to the PH". This is how facts get misconstrued. The arbitration ruling ruled that China had no legal basis on "historical claims" to those islands, because NO country (including PH) can make claims on any territory based on historical claims with our current maritime laws. If China reversed the role and initiated this ruling, the same thing would have applied to the PH - that PH cannot claim those islands based on "historical" records as well.
0:21 Taiwan isnt a "country". Why is Asian Boss allowing their host to spread misinformation? No world power in this world recognises "Taiwan" as a country. And Taiwans very own constitution specifically refers to Taiwan as a province of China.

So what did China allegedly "illegal occupy" again and from who?

"So how did China "illegally occupy" something thats not "owned" by any country?"
Something is only "illegal" if a law states that its prohibited. There is NO law that states anything about occupying territory not owned by anyone, ESPECIALLY when China is the FIRST country in the region to lay claims on those territories in the 1940s. It was only in the 1970s when oil was found in the region that Vietnam, PH and the likes started claiming areas in the SCS. So as the first country to lay claims and was uncontested, it should be theirs imo. So again, China did not "illegal occupy" those territories. Your words are showing extreme bias.
"It goes both ways as well"
Where was your comment that PH was "illegally occupying" territories in the SCS too?
"if this is not owned by any country but is currently being used by the said countries as an EEZ, , then why build islands and harass fishermen that is just trying to fish?"
I never said its "owned" or "not owned" by any country. The territories are called "disputed territories" for a reason. YOU were the one that said China were supposedly "illegally occupying" it. Im telling now that theyre not "illegally occupying" anything. Theres NO law that prohibits buildings islands outside of another countrys sovereign territory, thus Chinas actions cant be deemed "illegal".
And although I dont agree with the harassing of fisherman in the area, again, theres no laws against that in international law, so nothing can be done about that.
"china does not own the place right? then why act as if they own it?"
I spoke NOTHING on whether country X owns or does not own territory Z. Its called "disputed territory" for a reason. Many parties claim that they own the territory, including the PH.
But China has the strongest claim on the area as they were the first country in the region to lay claims to the islands in the 1940s, while others made their first claim in the 1970s...
"shouldnt it be joint extraction since no country owns it?"
And thats not how the world works. Especially since China was the first to lay claim in the region and was uncontested. So to them its theirs, so why should they split something that they deem as theirs? If your neighbour suddenly claimed half your house 30 years after you, would you split it with them?

As a Filipino, I still believe in the superiority of the US-Philippine Alliance over the "friendship" China is offering to us. Having a superpower ally is still the best deterrent against another hostile superpower, especially when our AFP is still far beyond what they call the "minimum credible defense". With China as the biggest adversary, I don't think "minimum" is even enough. Superpowers are fickle and questionable, but it's better to have a democratic superpower whose leaders can be replaced, whose policies can change, and whose people's opinions are relatively more open to expression. Good luck protesting in Moscow or Beijing.
But I also believe that the Philippines should NOT be dependent on the Americans alone to protect our national interests. The Philippines' primary responsibility is to build up its own defense capabilities and seek help from other democratic allies. Having an American presence is nice, but not the endgame aspiration.
On the other hand, it cannot be denied that China has an economic and cultural influence on us, but we must learn to stand against authoritarianism. It would have been ideal for Sino-Philippine ties if China was a multiparty democracy like ours. But we make do with what we have.
Overall, the Philippines remaining with the democratic camp is still the best option, but if there are ways to remain friendly with China without compromising our sovereign rights, we can try them. The foreign policies of Aquino II and Marcos II are far better than what Duterte ever tried. Best to stay with their course.

When it comes to Duterte, they're only viewing the relationship between China, but won't even bother to the fact that we strengthened ties with Japan, South Korea, Israel, and expanded ties with India, Turkey, ASEAN, the Middle East, and etc.
It's for Duterte that we're able to acquire new advance weaponries, such as state-of-the-art helicopters from Turkey, Supersonic missiles from India, Sabrah Light Tanks from Israel, because he expanded ties to the countries we often called "unorthodox". We even had various transfer of technology deal with the JSDF of Japan and its military-industrial complex and with Israel.
To establish minimum credible defense is to establish expanded diplomatic ties with various countries, to support you on your military modernization efforts, that's what Duterte did right, instead of fully relying on the American who can't even commit to assisting us, other than giving us some 2nd used hardware that has a shelf-life of 10-15 years.
Don't get me started with the various economic policies that propelled the continous economic growth of the country, such as the infrastructure program, liberalization, and etc.

Many always used U.S and China issue to an extent they use it as an excuse to have a pacifist stand. US and Philippine relation goes back after WW2. Also US is a deterrence that will make China think to not engage into a confrontation with the Philippines.
US is one of the trusted nation for the Filipinos. Why ask if it is obvious, we need US to defend our rights in "WEST PHILIPPINE SEA" and US need the Philippines as a strategic location to deter Chinas aggression. It is both beneficial for both parties that's
    its a partnership.

But besides that I might be a bit biased but my family and I fully support the US presence in Asia. One thing that Filipinos and Taiwanese want most of all is the status quo. We want help from the US but we do not want an armed conflict with China or Russia. The Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan do not have the capability to defend themselves against the super powers like China or Russia. Maybe Korea can to an extent.
If more US bases in PH is a good enough deterrent to keep the region peaceful I'm all for it.

As a half-Taiwanese, I think the Philippines is far more dangerous than Taiwan at the moment. Taiwan currently has no U.S. troops deployed. The economies of Japan, South Korea and China are deeply tied, and they have a certain degree of independence, and they will be very cautious about direct wars. After the Philippines became a U.S. military base, the nature of the conflict between the Philippines and China has completely changed, and this has gone far beyond the scope of island disputes. One thing is certain, as long as the United States and China break out in a local war in the South China Sea, the United States will be the first to activate the US military base in the Philippines. The consequence will be that the Philippines will be covered by Chinese missiles first, not Taiwan, and the entire Philippines will be engulfed in flames, not just a few islands. I don't stand on any side, but I strongly suggest that Filipinos should pay close attention to the development of the relationship between the United States and China. As a frontline position, the situation in the Philippines is more dangerous than any other region at the moment. Americans can live safely on the North American continent, but Filipinos are not..No matter how much the allies of the United States pay lip service to the Philippines.

As per my observation Filipinos have diverse opinion regarding US presence and building military bases may be because pro-US media is more dominant in Philippines. According to history US international politics and relations always revolve around self-interest. Look at US foreign policy today at Ukraine and Afghanistan or where US is involved, if it serves their purpose they dump in their armaments and spread the concept so called 'protection or safeguard democracy' but once it's starts hitting them hard they will quietly left as we have witnessed what happened in Afghanistan. For me as Asian it's time for us to unite and counter West hegemony and it's time for Asia to rise because it's been many century that West and Europe has colonised us and dominated us and we have been ill treated so we should not keep bowing to them and keep serving their purpose. It does not seek to entrench with the barbarism of both countries, with China's aggression and with the opportunistic tendencies of the US. The country only seeks to continually economically grow and strengthen its own military further to fend off both powers.

They have most of the world's shipbuilding capacity, and the tonnage of warships launched every year is equivalent to the entire French navy. Even if China's shore-based strike force is not considered, it would be unwise to conflict with the Chinese navy in the South China Sea. In fact, the events of 2016 have proven this judgment. In that incident, the US commander even gave the order to fire, but his men refused to carry out the order. He was subsequently fired and transferred to South Korea, where he became a minor figure.

I was actually surprised that the "well educated" people had such a rosy view of the US history in the Philippines, the civilian cost in the Philippine-American War was crazy. As a well educated American we never learned about it in school, and I was astounded when I only recently became aware of it... I guess it's not emphasized much in Philippines schools either, and the cultural memory has mostly faded/healed since it was over 120 years ago. Not that this would/should outweigh the current geopolitical bullying China is doing---it's just possible to acknowledge that the US did really shitty things in the past and has been a helpful ally more recently.

If we choose China, the US and its allies will retaliate and can economically punish the Philippines.

The Chinese on the other hand specifically the current CCP government has expansionist ambitions, and the current bully and colonizer in the region. Threatening independent democratic Taiwan, suppressing their ethnic Uyghurs, Tibetans Mongolians, neighboring India, claiming territories of Vietnam, Philippines Malaysia, Brunei etc. in the west Philippine sea, using obscure historical map. If I have a map of the world does it follow that I own the world? The west Philippine sea has been claimed by many including the Philippines but it has been free to fish and passage of nearby nation, as well as international commercial traffic, the US & other western nation freedom of navigation is essential to keep the area clear of CCP China's greedy grasp. We are already entangled in the US-China conflict the moment CCP China claimed our territories, militarized the islands and terrorized our fishermen.

I don't know how we can classify the «well-spoken» thing when we foreigners can't understand half of what they're saying (since it's Tagalog), apart from the bits in English, and (in my case) the many other bits in Spanish. Unless for «well-spoken» you actually mean «mostly using English».
I actually perceived the opposite: the few strongly pro-US people spoke showing some bias, lacking many bits of modern reality and history. Very clear contrast with the eldest, who didn't forget. The pro-independence (I think the majority) were balancing their historical background together with the current events and their geostrategical value. Those seemingly favouring China were actually pro-independence, however cleverly stating you should get along with your neighbours first.

With that out of the way, our disputes with China is something we should address among ourselves. Dragging the US along will draw even bigger risks and implications that'll sever what little mutual understanding we have left with China.
