The relationship between China and the Philippines was relatively good before, but since their current President took office, the times have suddenly changed.
China is a bully and wants to seize our territories that used to be the fishing grounds of our fishermen and especially when China found out that there is a lot of oil in the WPS, so their claims intensified and their behavior worsened.
Back in the day they didn't occupy the territories of other countries but when they got rich they started grabbing territory.

According to them that their drawn 9 dashline is a proof that China owns the entire SCS including the WPS.
If the dashlines are the basis of the territory or claim, does that mean that the entire Gulf of Mexico can also be drawn by Mexico along with the EEZ of the US?
Does that mean India can also draw a dashline in the Indian Ocean and claim it?
And even the Arabian Sea can be drawn with a dash line and claimed by the Arabs?
Even the entire Persian Gulf can be drawn as a dash line to be claimed by Iran?

Asking ordinary citizens is close to being pointless, most of them don't understand what's really going on. Asking politicians isn't a complete different case as well, most of them lie. This is an odd point in history where the people who knew are held by their throats or voluntarily silence themselves; the people who don't know kept shooting breezes and are, unfortunately, often believed.

@@remisu5917 You're a perfect example. You haven't carefully read what I wrote and here you're putting words to my mouth.
The motivation that a civilian would typically take in deciding what behavior to display is generally harnessed towards what they feel or experience. This seems very harmless and reasonable at first glance, however this is the same reason why they're unable to see the bigger picture. Let's take the Philippine history for example. We've been enslaved in our own motherland for 300+ years because our ancestors were blinded by the cross, mirrors, clothing etc that the "friendly" Spaniards has to offer.. making them unable to see real intentions of these conquistadors. And if that alone doesn't prove that there are people who will dig their own grave, I don't know what will.

Ordinary citizens like me wont budge more on the issues because its too complex to solve. The existing UNCLOS law that supposedly protect the country is not absolute and any powerful member like China can tend to ignore its ruling. As result even if China won't recognize it does big economies put sanctions to China? The reality is that they tend to ignore the win of the Philippines and China continue to claim the WPH and big economies continue to do business with China.
The only possible definite solution is that we make Philippines super rich, technologically advance and deterrence capable military to China and we cannot do that if we cannot make it to advance economy and technologically advance. In fact the country is infested with social issues and environment sustainability issues that its even harder for the country to advance and even compete with its faster advancing neighbors.
To not to exhaust yourself, you can join them, or join an ally, join protest on streets hoping for a miracle or watch their bidding.

The thing is Philippines actually tried pivoting from US to China. Our former president was openly campaigning for a shift from US to China-Russia Alliance.
His administration also prioritized Belt and Road Initiative projects. China just got more bold in their incursion. They used this opportunity to survey possible resources and strategic locations. They put structures near our military bases. They even found possible locations for oil drilling operations. Also there's a market in China for rare, endangered corals. This causes them to dredge coral reefs, destroying the Aquatic biodiversity in the area. We found out the hard way that the more we listen to them, the more they will intrude. and they never considered peace and cooperation.
The Philippines is just too strategic of a location, it has raw materials as well. A mouth-watering treat for any burgeoning power.
    The Spanish Empire knew this.
    The British Empire knew this
    The United States knew this.
    The Japanese Empire knew this.

Yea sure, except you are forgetting the factor being "if China has the capability to do so". China sent a fleet pass Japan's Tsugaru Strait, which is between Japan main island and Hokkaido, during covid after Japan set some restrictive policies against China. Tsugaru Strait is deemed as national waters only because Japan wanted to give convenience to commercial convoys so they pulled back borders of their territorial waters, and here comes China driving their navy fleet through. What a great way to exploit other people's kindness, and proves China would not hesitate to provoke other nations in their waters if possessing the capability.
Also, who is the one claiming West Philippines Sea is their territory on the basis of a map from a Dynasty they overthrew, is it the US claiming that?

And there was a trend for pubs throwing parties celebrating assassination of former JP prime minister.

I am most impressed by the good sense of Filipinos. They are not pledging "iron clad" allegiance to either side. They also know their history, as opposed to blind ignorance.
There is no free lunch. The US is not coming to protect the Philippines because it loves the country and its people. Far from it. It wasn't too long ago, the US was a staunch supporter of Ferdinand Marcos, a well-known dictator who ruled the Philippines ruthlessly. Now his son is back in power, and promised to be different to his father. Well, does the old saying "like father, like son" still work??
The Philippines was under the US's radar for some time thanks to ex-President Rodrigo Duterte who saw right through the US, and its true intents when it comes with gifts and warships. Now Ferdinand Marco's son is in charge, and he is warming up to the Americans once again, like his father. The US is worried about China. It is busy establishing alliances of military pacts like the AUKUS and the QUAD. India is the new best friend of the US now. Not too long ago, PM Modi was banned from entering the US for human rights violations. That is the degree how quickly the US prepares to turn around when it suits it, or when it can use it.
Like Ukraine, the presence of US influence hasn't done the country any good. I just hope that the nice, gentle Filipinos won't suffer the same fate as the Ukrainians now endure...deaths and destruction.

If anyone cares to truly look into the history of both countries they will see that America loves war and China loves business. Both are in it for their own self interest which makes both of them bad for the Philippines, but America's roots of being abusive to the rights of other countries where there are people of color stands out like a sore thumb. In Africa America backed the Apartheid regime, and they come and do things to a country which is not legal for them to do in their country on purpose knowing the damage they are causing to the ecosystem. Look at what the US did to South America as they just covered up the oil with dirt and said , "We cleaned it up." But one thing is clear is America will go to war on false pretenses and then after they get what they want leave the people to fend for themselves knowing that they totally disarmed those people and somehow the US sleeps well at night.

Here are my takes in this issues:
    1. We don't really mind who will rule the world in the future. We all know that this war is all because of world dominance.
    2. If China will just be friendly to us Filipinos and honor our claims which is just within our natural territory? We will be surely closer to Chinese people. If China will just avoid aggression and give us what we claimed? We might end up helping the Chinese to secure their intentions.
    3. We (Filipinos) all know that China need this so called 'South China Sea". They need it for trades amd homeland security. They need to dominate this sea inorder to secure their future route. But, they don't need to be aggressive and water Canon or chase our small fisherman's boats just to impose their dominance.
    4. I my self have my mainland Chinese blood runs through my vain (my great-grandfather was a migrant during China's great famine). But if China will forcefully take what is closer to us, or what is rightfully to us? I definitely welling to die for my country.
    5. We don't need American military presence in our land. We Filipinos always have a chilling impressions regarding having American military base AGAIN in our country. If China read and study our history? We kicked out American bases because we don't really need them. But if China will continue these aggressively? China should know (if they study Phils war history) that despite our short comings regarding armaments and manpower? We Filipinos don't give up. We will fight tell the end, we always have. Spain 333yrs, US for decades, Japan despite superior and more advanced. We can drag China down economy if war will happens, yes we might suffer more, but definitely China economy will never be the sam again eafter this war.
    Conclusions:
Look, we all know that in order for China to take the number 1 superpower from US is either to go to war? Or to wait till they surpass US economy and world dominance. With these? China should avoid bullying other smaller nations just to reiterate their dominance. China should increase their deplomatic ties especially with their neighboring countries. For sure Philippines will be the first nation to back them up. For the reasons that we have more Chinese mixed blood than any Western world. We have the oldest China town. With that said. May we all live in peace and prosperity and be guided with grace by our ancestors and may God bless us with his holy wisdom. Salamat po!

The so-called geopolitics, of course, is that neighboring countries are more likely to create a sense of psychological deterrence. The correct comparison is to ask whether the threat of China attacking the Philippines because of the South China Sea dispute is greater, or whether the United States illegally intervenes in the Taiwan Strait dispute and uses the Philippine base to attack China, causing the Philippines to be attacked by China. The threat is greater.

I think what we Filipinos need to accept and understand is that either ways there is no safe zone for us between the two Behemoths. There shouldn't be an option in the first place. Either way we will be endangered if one of the two big country decides to exert their power towards us. For me the best approach is to see the present situation of each country in terms of leadership, action towards other foreign countries, and lastly if they are following through actions. Historical evidences shouldn't even be a basis that's like saying we shouldn't trust Mongolia for having Genghis Khan as their ancestor, or Rome because of Julius Ceasar or Germans for having Adolf Hitler. Each era have different circumstances, have different sets of world leader and different world order and the now is no more than different. The real threat is an evil person to hold that kind of power sooner or later. We all just want a safer and peaceful world.

That’s why the Philippine government (whom the Filipinos voted for at 60%) invited US military presence in the Philippines. Chinese military bullying of the Philippines, made even former President Duterte back track on his friendship with China to ask for US help. During the US presence in Subic and Clark, American troops contributed between 1.7-3% of the Philippines GNP. Subic naval based generated $220 million dollars into the local economy, providing jobs for 40,000 Filipinos. More than 150,000 people depended on income from the naval base

The same is true in Okinawa, where every year ~10,000 Okinawans demonstrate for the removal of the US military. What's interesting is that even with US propaganda talking all the time about China invading Taiwan, the Okinawans still demonstrated every year to get the US military bases out.
There's a reason for this, when the US military is there in large numbers they treat the locals like dirt. Everytime decade after decade. We're the imperial empire of USA, everyone is afraid of our miitary. This is what every US soldier/sailor is taught and that's part of the reason they treat the locals like dirt.

lol! Vietnam is one of China's victims of their brutal conquests and atrocities, stop making lies because the world knows all your atrocities, The 1967 mass killing in Dao County, known as the Dao County Massacre, was 66 days of mass destruction in Hunan Province, China, lasting from August 13 to October 17, 1967. It resulted in 4,519 dead, of whom 4,193 were killed outright and 326 were forced to commit suicide., Beginning with the Red August of Beijing, massacres took place nationwide, including the Guangxi Massacre, in which massive cannibalism also occurred; the Inner Mongolia incident; the Guangdong Massacre; the Yunnan Massacres; and the Hunan Massacres. Almost 90,000 people were counted as dead or missing and presumed dead in the final official Chinese government assessment; the officially reported total killed included more than 5,300 children, the bulk of them students attending classes. They were whipping, flogging, hard labour, exile and capital punishment. Death was still the ultimate price to pay, but gone were the cruel and unusual ways to die. However, Mao's government was responsible for vast numbers of deaths, with estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million victims due to starvation, persecution, prison labour, and mass executions, which drew criticism for being considered totalitarian rule. Death toll. The excess mortality associated with the famine has been estimated by former CCP officials and international experts, with most giving a number in the range of 15-55 million deaths.
What was the deadliest famine in history?

The 'Great Leap Forward'-famine in China from 1959-61 was the single largest famine in history in terms of absolute numbers of deaths. Excess mortality estimates vary hugely, but based on our midpoint estimates, it cost more than double the number of lives than any other famine.

The Philippines didn't want to join any side to begin with. As a nation, i believe that we want to stay neutral as much as possible and to de-escalate a situation as peacefully and as quietly as possible.
The problem with China truly escalated when China started harassing our fishermen while in our waters and the chinese coastguard started them away from fishing claiming that "they are in chinese waters". We fought for it in the arbitral tribunal and won against china's 9 dash line claims in the region. But china just straight up ignored our case and are still in the said waters. Our former president even went to china to negotiate 3 times, oust the US army and even willing to buy armaments from China and Russian just for china to acknowledge our efforts. But xi jing ping just keeps ignoring it and his coastguard continue to harass our citizens and even take fish their caught fish. They even ran through a fishing boat and left the filipino fishermen floating at sea, rammed our coastguard and pointed lasers to our coast guard. The chinese ambassador said that "our coastguard are just playing with TOY LASERS!, Grow up PH".
What can a poor nation do who has weak defenses physically and cybernetically do to protect it's sovereignty from a big bully tyrant atop the sea? Just stay quiet and silence its citizens? We did everything we can to de-escalate and protect our neutrality but nations cannot take such bullying and not fight back. The welcoming of the US troops back is the last option for the PH to at least help its citizens counter chinese harassment.

A lot of documented plan to overthrow Spanish colonizers and even 200,000 filipinos died in Filipino-American war. Unlike China, Philippines didn't have the chance in continuing most of its pre-colonial traditional practices because Spaniards erased most of it. Filipinos are killed once Spaniards knew they are betraying Spain. Unlike the British, Dutch, Japanese colonizers, once Spaniards see a filipino doing non-Spanish tradition, they'll execute that person.

Both has a point in opinion, neither US nor China, we don't know whos who, the thing is even though Filipinos are getting bullied by Chinese military force during fishing time in certain areas that are literally in the Philippine waters, Filipinos cannot just retaliate, if chinese military might run over, in the first place the Philippines, doesn't have that kind of power to deal with Chinese forces, therefor Philippines need someone to back them up and that's how US will come, unfortuantely because of the US-PH history from a long time ago, you also cannot blame the Filipinos to feel uneasy, if for some reason and it's a big "IF", filipinos can fight the Chinese head on no doubt, youn also cannot under estimate Filipinos pride when it comes to fighting, filipinos will fight to the death if it means saving the country from foreign invaders, it is just sad that we don't have the capability to match the Chinese forces when it comes to military might, it is the same thing if US decided to invade Philippines, we cannot out run them, our forces will be swept away just like that. We also know that US had many bases all over ther world and it keeps on expanding. At this point we really don't know the full plan of why Philippines is giving US more access to different bases. We also don't know to which extent of friendliness US will offer. The only thing I can say is IF China decided to go to war then I'll be glad that US is there to back us up. Even with all this tensions it is still a big "IF".

There is a difference between a colony and a commonwealth. The Philippines had its own government and its own elected officials as an American commonwealth, they also did not pay federal taxes, only paid local taxes to their own government (though this government was set up and modeled by Americans). The Philippines also received extensive amounts of humanitarian aid and money from the United States as a commonwealth. These are stark contrasts from how the Philippines was treated as a colony under Spanish rule. Saying it was a colony under the Americans would be by definition incorrect.

However, who ever has the money and guns has more power and the USN took advantage but that is not legal under the rules of our military and they sometimes get taken advantage of too. Other interviews I’ve watched on this topic leave out the illegal guns made for criminals in the Philippines and the drug trafficking there. The fishing boat incidents and the dredging by China are ignored. The Philippines was more prosperous with US military presence but of course there’s a price. An island has difficulties holding its own with these monster nations(mine and China) bombing the place to hell which is why Obama stayed out of it.

The United States is a staunch ally of the Philippines and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to its security and stability. Through joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and defense partnerships, the United States has helped to deter potential threats and maintain peace in the region.
The United States has a long-standing tradition of supporting democratic values and human rights, which aligns with the aspirations of the Filipino people. The free market structure in the United States enables economic freedom, entrepreneurship, and innovation, promoting individual liberty and prosperity.
China's Communist Party-led government operates under a different political system that limits individual freedoms, curtails freedom of expression, and restricts access to information. This raises concerns about the potential erosion of liberties in countries that come under Chinese influence.
From a geopolitical perspective, China's assertive actions in the South China Sea have caused tensions in the region. The United States, through its presence and commitment to freedom of navigation operations, has been seen as a stabilizing force, working to maintain the status quo and ensuring the freedom of international waters.

Now instead of the defunct USSR, it is with China. That is also how most of these Filipinos think because of the effect of leftist teachers espousing their ideology.

Considering there are far more people of Filipino descent living in the US (and neighboring Canada) than China, I’d say most would truly rather support/have the support of the US than China. For expats and OFWs, western countries have always been the ideal place to go to, primarily because English is widely taught in the Philippines. The only places where Filipinos tend to go in high numbers outside the west are places in the Middle East, such as Dubai, where the need for English-speaking hospitality and medical professionals is high.

The US colonised the Philippines before and now is making a return to have more military bases in the Philippines to target China over the Taiwan issue. Also, the US is trying to make use of its allies to contain China rise. China, as in the past and present, wanted to trade with the Philippines and Asean countries. China is not keen to have wars with the US and its allies. If the US clearly supports Taiwan's independence, a world war will start in the South China Seas. China considers Taiwan a part of China based on history and will never accept a break away Taiwan.
