- A new law raising the minimum marriage age to 18 was recently passed in the Philippines but apparently not everyone is happy with this new ban on child marriage. Why did this become controversial in some Filipino communities? We hit the streets of Manila to get some different perspectives.

As a filipino this is so disturbing to hear people against this ban. The idea of me getting married off younger than 18 to some nasty old man makes my skin crawl. Filipino girls should be protected from this trauma!
India is debating on raising the marriage age of girls from 18 to 21.....21 for both male and female......It's addressed in parliament and hopefully will be passed later on

Me as well! The women seem to have a different perspective. I'd also be interested to see the different perspectives depending on class (although this might be too complicated to conduct) since its observable that over the years, many who belong to the middle to upper class are pushing their children to attain higher education for professional purposes and marry much later than their parents did.
Yeah, the one hijabi didn't seem too keen about child marriage compared to the Muslim men. It seemed like she experienced something similar too or maybe someone she's close to. But maybe I'm wrong.
Well, their was a muslim girl (a child) who was married to an old man and when the girl was interviewed on national tv she said she was okay with it.. the thing with culture is when you grow up and you were taught that something is how its done and that its okay, you'll think that is okay.. that its normal.. only when you are removed into that environment and someone teach you on how is that wrong until then you'll realize how wrong it is.. that's why you have women who don't realize that they were being sexually assaulted or that its their fault for being assaulted because the majority dictates the norm
@@arcdave2735 Yes, but I don't think that what is wrong and harmful to people is that relative. Maybe that's not what you meant, but it sounded like it. So, often I hear how women felt bad in a situation without knowing why and just when they were taught that what they experienced is wrong they understand why they felt bad about something. I don't know about the specific girl you mentioned, but I find it hard to believe that having s*x at that age (if you mean an actual child and not an older teenager) and probably needing to do chores all day without being able to play with children her age isn't harmful to her psychologically. And having s*x with a ch1ld can also be very harmful physically.
@@solar0wind well according to dictionary a child is below 18. I looked up her age and its 14, one is even 13 and they said they are ok with it. For example is the person i know was raped and she think it was her fault, do you know why she thinks that way?? Its because back then victim blaming is not bad, its seen as normal. I used to think that way too when i was a kid, that a woman wearing showing a lot of a skin is an invitation to sexual assault only when i began reading a lot did that change. The values and principles and what is taught to us in childhood shapes the way we think and when a child is taught that getting married is her duty and that it is okay then she will grow thinking that its okay. Its like back then in medieval times when 13 yr olds are deem old enough to get married because it is seen as a norm.
It's so disappointing to know that people are against this ban especially if the intent of the marriage is to have a child or to have an arranged/forced marriage. Children shouldn't be raising other children nor do something just to "save their family name".
@@oooooo3820 Actually no. Economic development has nothing to do with it. Despite what this video makes it look like, child marriage is NOT common at all in the Philippines. The average marrying age of Filipinos is 27 for women, and 29 for men.
The legal age of marriage in almost all of the Philippines is 18. Marriage below that age is illegal. Arranged marriages is also non-traditional and virtually unknown (unlike neighboring countries). You don't seem to realize that the Philippines is around 90-95% Christian/secular, and is pretty high (higher than most first world countries) in terms of gender equality.
The problem only exists among Muslim minorities in the Muslim Autonomous regions in the far south, which are composed of regions with some special laws and exemptions based on Shariah. Originally meant to give them more rights given that the rest of the Philippines is overwhelmingly Christian. Some have used these laws to legalize arranged marriages and child marriages, because they believe that these are "traditional" in Islam.
The ones against the ban have a twisted sense of what the dynamic in a marriage should be. People have advanced since these dynamics made sense.

Calling rido a "family feud" is an understatement. It's a war between different clans, where both families literally kill members of the other family in response to a perceived insult or crime. Including people who are not even involved in the original conflict, but are related. And it can originate even from an ordinary fight. It becomes a cycle of revenge killings. Sometimes the original reason is long forgotten. It's one of the oldest problems in Muslim areas in the Philippines.
Using rido as a justification for child marriage is patching evil with another evil.
This sounds very similar to the "blood feuds" of Albania.

Love from India. I thought India has so many of these problems, but it seems it is not just India. If somebody cannot drink or drive, they should not be forced to marry. It is just stupid that we are finding excuses to get children married. Child marriage is a big problem in India despite the laws. 40% of the world’s 60 million child marriages take place in India. But as people get educated, we are hoping this social evil will eventually disappear.

I had my first period when I was 9, and he's saying that girls are okay to marry once they got their period. That's horrifying. I know he said 13, but their are girls who will have it earlier or later. I respect our Muslim kababayans but I'm glad that child marriages are now banned in our country. The fact that there's people against that law is not only concerning but also absolutely disgusting. I am in shock that anybody would actually oppose this. It really shows that some parts of the world need very serious development. That whole muslim argument is also just stupid. No religion in this world should have the power to decide over young peoples lives like that. The legal age of marriage in the Philippines is and always has been 18.
Child marriage is only a problem in the Autonomous Muslim region where the legal age of marriage is 15 for boys and onset of puberty for girls. This only applies for a minority that constitutes around 5% of the Philippines.

Considering the fact marrige is one of the expensive, massive challenging contract between both parties, age restriction would be a minimum bar to protect the minor who has right to be educated and build their own belif untill they reach adult with full of lawful right and duty.

As a Muslim myself, I am very shocked to see this and I find it very wierd that they are using Islam to support child marriages. Its totally rediculous. I am from north India and my caste/community is called Gaddi/Gazi(agriculturist and cattle rearers) which came under the category of OBC(other backward caste) in my country because of being educationally and economically backward. Yet, we don't have child marriages at all. They are way to rare. Reason: it's not our tradition!! In our tradition, people got married b/w mid 20s to late 20s and sometimes till mid 30s. While in other muslim community like the Ansari(weaver community), there, people usually get married in early to late 20s. Every community in Muslims has there own tradition about marriages and same goes with Hindus here. Cuz, neither Islam nor any other religion have given any age criteria for marriage. So, stop using Islam or any other religion to support your cultural evils.

That person who said that a kid should be mentally and emotionally stable before being married off to someone. Have you ever seen a kid who's already mentally and emotionally stable, mature? It seems like what the person really meant was "the kid should just say yes to everything we say".
Imagine being born into a situation where you're forced or pushed into marrying someone you don't even like (and you're still a kid). Imagine that you're being made to marry someone because of those clan killings and you are the solution to stop your family from getting erased from earth. You're literally a sacrifice. You lose your freedom to love whoever you want when you grow up. You lose your individuality because your entire family (and the rival killing family) depends on you to get married to stop all the killings. You're gonna be guilt-tripped into marrying because if you don't, then it probably means you don't care for your family, you don't love them, and you're a bad person.
Sure it is important to respect people's cultures. But what if something in a certain culture is very harmful? Maybe what seems harmful to us isn't harmful to them because that's their culture, that's their way of living, so everyone, including the "victims", view it from a different perspective than us. We may have the right to voice our opinions, but what right do we have to impose our own moral or cultural standards, our way of life, our point of view, on others? What if one day, someone in power bases his laws on his own morality, culture and then makes it a crime for everyone who doesn't follow his morality or cultural standards? We cannot always view this from only one perspective, we also need to put ourselves in a situation and think how we'd react if it was a part of our way of life that gets affected by laws made by someone who doesn't have the same cultural background or way of life?
I think this is a topic that cannot easily be given answers because it's a clash of cultures, morality, points of view.
Someone that is both emotionally and mentally ready that is not forced is a much better definition of ready to be married.
What's the alternative?
Some random ages given by the countries? Do all people the same age have the same mental capacity? Do children today that browse TikTok all day have the same mental capacity as children that used to fight in wars?
Absolutely not, so having a static age is not effective rather the first definition is much more practical.
In theory we shouldn't have any right to enforce our morality or standards on others. But some people disagree and enforce them, as they feel what they're doing is good, correct, righteous, but to the people having new ideas pushed on them, it's oppressing their culture.
What you say is correct, we should put ourselves in the “disgusting“ side's perspective and consider how we may feel.
Personally I support the ban on child marriage because statistically their lives will turn out better and it'll be more productive for both families. But productivity isn't always the main focus in cultures and traditions.
Interesting to see the differences in answers when they asked about what age they believe young girls should be before they can marry.
The women’s response compared to men are so different. One man said as soon as you menstruate, you can marry 🤯 the girl is still figuring herself out..

Child marriage is a problem only among Muslim Filipinos who live in an autonomous region that have their own special laws (based on the Shariah) that allow them to marry children below the age of 18.
In everywhere else in the Philippines, marriage below the age of 18 is illegal. Hence why this new law was passed to remove the "religious exemptions" used by some Muslim Filipinos to continue practicing child marriage.
To give you more context, the Philippines is 95% Christian/Secular, 5% Muslim.

Great job to the Phillipine government! Child marriages in Islam are one of the worst human rights violations around the globe. It infuriates me to see pre-pubescent girls married off to full-grown men. This should never have been allowed, and everyone should condemn it.

Clearly there's an issue with unwanted babies being left. I think this new law will help prevent or drastically reduce this problem.
I understand that for religious reasons, people are against this ban. But logically speaking, it makes no sense to have child marriages. Biologically & mentally, people are not fully developed until at least 18 years of age. It's also important to give females the opportunity to be educated so they can make their own decisions about how they want to go about their lives, get a degree and then a career, etc.
Religion often tends to be the cause for a lot of debates, arguments, wars, etc. I have nothing against religion. It's just people need to realize these things and not use religion as a reason for doing things like this.
I think this is good for the Philippines. It's time to move away from old traditions and think about the future of the country. There's no actual real-world, modern benefit to allowing such a thing. It's just a cultural/religious thing that people have been used to doing. But it's about time that these kinds of practices stop.

First of all, just thinking of child marriage makes me nauseous.
If a young girl getting her period means she'll be handed over to some old guy, married off without even knowing what's puberty, I'm glad the ban was passed.
Also, in my head, when the glasses guy said that rape statistics are low in that Muslim province due to early marriage, I kinda laughed in disbelief. Are there laws in the Philippines recognizing marital rape? Those little girls having some old guy forcing themselves on them...

Yes. Marital rape is a crime in the Philippines. 18 is also the minimum legal age for marriage (with parental consent), and 21 (without).
The video does not make it clear enough that the issue of child marriage only exists in the Autonomous Muslim Regions, which has a separate set of Civil Laws (based on the Shariah) from the rest of the Philippines. Hence why a new law had to be passed to enact a national ban, once and for all. Muslims account for only 5% of the population of the Philippines. The rest of the Philippines (95%) is Christian/Secular.

Child marriage in the Philippines is illegal long before however there are cultural exemptions and the new law is banning it. If you are not part that culture then child marriage is illegal which is 80% of the Philippines. even then if you are 18-25 of age and getting married, there are still many process to get including a parents consent. You are free to marry without a parent consent if you are 26yrs old and above.

The thing I understood is that child marriage had terms and conditions and "consent" while forced does not. But the thing is, how does a child consent?? Holy Moly, did not know this was a big issue because in my circle or from what I know, middle-class people living in the urban city usually marry above 25 and there are still that marry after 30.... but then I remember I know some of my Muslim classmates who got married at 17 and on their marriage day, it was the first time they met. I've heard stories of Muslim teenage girls tricked to go to a party that turned out to be their wedding, lol. But in Christian communities, you hardly hear of anyone getting married so early, mostly there are teen pregnancies but they don't marry which is why there are so many single Moms in the Philippines that got pregnant at ages 13-17.

As a catholic living in a city that has half of the population are both Catholics and muslims, the Catholics don't practice child and arranged marriages at all, but the Muslims ones, I can't even fathom my other Muslim friends and classmates back in high school who are immediately married by the time they graduate high school, and due to this practice there are many infidelity or abuse and or an all out toxic relationships.

it's not our faith at all, only cultural. islam teaches that killing is completely wrong (the Qur'an says "if you kill one person, it is as if you have killed all of mankind"). killing people in a family feud or for any reason other than a 100% islamically-justified war (i don't think there are any wars that satisfy the conditions of it being acceptable in islam, because the reason should be only to fight back against persecution, not fighting for money, resources etc) is a huge sin, maybe one of the biggest sins of all. also non-consensual marriages are forbidden and not seen as a true marriage because it is essentially r*pe, so forcing your child to marry someone is a big sin. unfortunately there are many muslims who are uneducated in the religion and they think cultural practices and islam are the same thing. we need better education and islamic education in the Qur'an and Sunnah teachings.

It consistently sounds like the child is almost always a girl, one who cannot conceptualize what a marriage entails, and yet such a decision would be thrust upon he without her having a say in it. I'm shaking with a surprising amount of sadness and fury at the thought of such a unconscionable idea.
I just want to make it clear that the perspective of Islam in relation to child marriage in this video comes through a cultural lens. While Islam does not have a minimum age for marriage, there are requirements, as one of the interviewees mentions. From my understanding and what I have been taught, forcing marriage upon a person is prohibited by the religion. Even if parents arrange a marriage, the consent of the children is needed to be valid in the eyes of God. There are also recommendations for both persons involved to create contracts with terms and conditions of marriage for their personal protection. Most people I talk to, even Muslims, do not know this because of the heavy influence of culture on the way we perceive and practice Islam. That's why there is little uniformity of practices and beliefs across the globe. Also, Muslims have to abide by the laws of the land. I am all in favor of the age raise to prevent this child abuse. People are using Islam as validation for child marriages, but it really is just an excuse.

My interpretation is that Islam would encourage the protection of children in these situations by this means. I am doubtful that most child marriages happen with good intentions. It would be pretty interesting to see if the people who in the past had arranged child marriages are having a good life and if they agree with the change or not. It would be tricky though. The fact that they were married as children would indicate that their husband, his family, and their own family would be pretty restrictive about her ever saying anything about it. They didn't let her talk before, why would they do so now?

As a muslim, I think banning child marriage is definitely the best choice. Sure, Islam does allow it since back when Muhammad was alive or other prophets were alive, there weren't any law against it, heck even knights had once dated a child, but it's not a priority and that you should do it, it's more of a choice. Personally, im against it as I believe childrens should enjoy their childhood first rather than immediately become a parent as soon as they reached puberty. So I view this ban as a very, very good thing

Considering how difficult the law is around marriage in the Philippines, especially with divorce not being legal..., it's a no brainer to exclude children from the possibility of marriage until at least 18. I'd even bump it up to 21 since the laws surrounding marriage are so restrictive.

The video misleadingly implies that marriage under 18 is the norm in the Philippines. It's not. The new ban is specifically to stop the prevalence of child marriage in the Muslim Autonomous regions, which were previously exempted from the national legal marrying age of 18-21 because unlike the rest of the Philippines, they have their own separate Civil Laws based on the Shariah.

But almost everyone I know in the Philippines supports it being legalized. I have friends and family separated from their former spouses and who can't move on because they're prevented from legalizing the separation by the law.

IMO most Muslims in this archipelago are old fashioned and narrow minded, some stuck in pre colonial ideology. It has been 500 years since the Spanish introduced Christianity in the Philippines, just ponder on that for a moment. (I am not trying to be biased and offensive)
The complexity of the culture in this archipelago is the answer for that statement. Some will always have their own thing.
Well I guess at the end of the day, this country's culture will always be diverse and complex, not binary. I'll still love my country for that.

I’ve heard no good reason from the opposing side on the law. Customs and traditions honestly don’t mean anything and shouldn’t mean anything when it’s to look out for the well-being of a community such as not allowing child marriages or cannibalism for example. And their being a low number of rape doesn’t mean it was directly caused by allowing child marriages, that’s just a very sketchy correlation. Ignoring the probable several cases of when it’s not reported since it’s usually a young girl getting married off to a wealthier family too

It is implemented. The legal of marriage is 18 in 95% of the Philippines. It's a secular democracy.
The problem is, in the Autonomous Muslim Regions, they have their own special laws based on Islam. Which is why they are exempted from the 18 age limit followed by everyone else. THEY do not have separation between the state and religion, by their own choice.
This new law removes that exemption. And forces Muslim Filipinos even in the autonomous provinces, to follow the national legal age limit of 18.
What I had find it funny about that "separation from church and state" it had been ironically done by several groups. And one of them thinks that the majority of the people against child marriages and or age of consent are Christians.

@@killertruth186 It is true because after all, majority of Filipinos are also Catholics/Christians.
But it's wrong of them to think that the majority want to ban child marriages because it goes against the majority's Catholic beliefs. I've been searching for their grounds on banning child marriage and they, and I quote, " view child marriage as a practice constituting child abuse because it debases, degrades, and demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of children."
There's nothing really about religion stated, which is why I don't really get why they're playing the "majority are Catholics" card.
In india as well, when government raised marriage age to 21, it were mainly muslim men who were against it. I know many muslim females who were in favor of that law.

@@sobhi1423 ah could be the location difference? Im talking about urban muslim females who were mainly in support, some even appeared in local tv news appreciating the law.
