Says he doesn’t want to play something that looks like it’s from long ago, but raves about these 8/16 bit indies.......?
Legend X Ronin This needs to be top comment. #Truth
Well, you're comparing art style with genre and game style, but I still think this guy judged this game too soon.
Wish I could thumbs up this comment twice but will have to settle with a thumbs up and a comment
Ikr
He must be talking about how its a $80 retro looking game. its one thing to pay $10 for a 8bit looking game because thats what you expect.. but when its $80 it damn well should look like zelda ya know?
I downloaded the demo, choose Tressa, the merchant, watched the town and the sunrise with the awesome music, quit the demo and pre-ordered Octopath Traveler.
Lol that's amazing. Did you like the game?
I started the demo with Cyrus, 20 minutes in, I knew I was getting the game
How was the game?
“Why would we dive back decades when we have all the modern conveniences and all the super cool systems that 2018 is capable of providing”???
Because FFVI, Wild Arms, and other countless old school RPGs trump mostly everything released now.
If you like turn based JRPGs. Someone who didn't like those games probably won't like a game that has very similar gameplay.
Gameplay can be one aspect of it. But the overall aesthetic, story, sound, and music - I feel like classic rpgs of yore can stand the test of time and are continually cited by gamers as being classics, unlike the majority of games nowadays, which are forgettable.
Marc Montana persona five, breath of the wild............... tons of other shit.
I don't get people who say great games aren't coming out of today
The game is basically a pop up book with SNES charm and I truly like that.
That's the perfect way to describe it.
...probably the reason why the physical collector's edition even comes IN a pop up book XD
Great analogy, Retoura! :-)
Anyone who played the game, how was it?
Being a 15 year old, I hate how my surrounding people call games like this and other retro game or any JRPG at all "antiquated" and dated video game design.
legolover8805 you use that word at 15? Interesting people you hang out with
U want antiquated tell this dude to play a nes or snes game
+NessChaosFire Snes still has some of the best jrpgs to date.
dutchschaefer not all 15 year olds are the stereotypical fortnite players...a lot of us are actually well spoken intellectuals
It’s okay brother, they don’t know any better. Artists know this better than anyone else. They’re purely different art styles.
There’s nothing wrong with old-fashioned things Zach. Going back to basics or revisiting an idea or format is sometimes needed in fact. Look at Shovel Knight, which came out in a time where it felt like EVERY GAME was dark and gritty and realistic looking. Everything does not need to be cutting edge to be fresh. Hell sometimes “CUTTING EDGE” gets stale. Experiencing a new take on an old idea can open the door to new revelations. Hopefully this game can knock you out of that “NEW NEW NEW” mindset.
The problem with people like you is, ALL games of any genre isn't great or bad UNTIL YOU PLAY THE DAMN GAME.... That's like saying, If i like only shooters and all shooters are great or good.. NO, some are trash!
EXACTLY. THANK YOU. Some people need to give games a chance before saying it's crap. I don't get why people don't do that.
Like Pay Day 2
Well thats a very special exception Mike.
The problem with people like you is that you get triggered without even listening to what he said in the video. He said JRPGs aren't really his thing, so he was going to pass on this one. He didn't say it was a bad game, just not his style.... until he played it.
Nick Sbordone
That's still the same thing. Regardless of how its worded.
Did anyone else choose Primrose first and expect her story to be lighthearted because she's a dancer, only to find out that she's a slave and gets called a whore by her owner?
No? Just me? Okay.
oof
Like this comment if it's a life goal of yours to eat my ass.
Played her "origin" in the original demo and it's somewhat what I expected. If you didn't, never played any JRPG? ;)
I chose Primrose first because she was thicc
Legit Boss
I mean, that's why I chose her too. Pretty sure anyone who says otherwise is lying.
Huh????? Are you joking ? This is without a doubt the most unique and amazing looking game coming out over the summer for the switch. This type of mentality is what’s so wrong with people these days. They think because they have all this information via the internet that they know everything.
Mike Holcomb He did say he doesn't typically like JRPGs and that that was his reasoning for originally planning to skip over it.
Rainbowmon 2018 in other words they are not his cup of tea
Like I always say better to try something yourself before deciding on something never listen to critics
I don't think this kid Mike watched the video. Think he is just going off the brief title. Walking hypocrite when he's critiquing this generation. Just the representation of everything wrong with this generation
I watched the video and Mike is responding to his reasons for not wanting to try it which don't make any sense. He said this type of game was made with "antiquated ideas". Literally just because of how it looks and the fact that it's a JRPG. what a shallow idea
I have been waiting for this ever since it was announced. So glad your opinion switched! Played the demo. Played the next demo. Counting down now!!
FarlyCreates I waited until today to actually play the second demo, so it felt like I got the game a day early. :) have been anticipating this game since it was announced. I’ve had the switch since day one and have probably played the original demo 20 some odd times.. so glad the day is here!! Hope you enjoy it as much as I am going to :D
FarlyCreates I literally waited to play the 3hour demo so I can just continue in the full game right away. Can't wait
FarlyCreates same here can't wait to get home to play the game in full
Remember:
All 8 paths are self contained stories. No over-arching story arc where everyone comes together, story wise. (They're just their as just party members; grant it no one has said anything if their will b one after completing all 8 paths. But we'll see. One person only mentioned making it as far as completing 4 paths as of now.)
Their are "personal moments" where ur party members can talk in those spots to each other. But other than tht, they are just in ur party with no real interaction with each other in any of the story paths.
I might still get it depending on wht everyone says at least 3-5 days after release.
Imagination fills in with the character interaction :/
Funny how I hated JRPGs when I was a kid, but as I grew older, this genre is now my favorite for sure.
Hooray! I’m glad you’ve come around. I, like Gabe, CANNOT stop talking about this game! I’ve made three videos already, even, with two more in the pipeline! This, along with God of War are my games of the year.
"Maybe it's not as cool looking as Spider-Man on PS4 or Super Smash Bros Ultimate". -_- Do you know how hard this must have been to nail that final Octopath's signature look? It's way past beyond bare photo realism. Please don't you even dare comparing. This, plus your "Antiquated" remark at the begining shows you have much to learn about the medium.
. He sees the hype and jumps aboard
Choo Choo!! All Aboooard!!
Hype only makes you curious to try something, it doesn't make you like or love a game.
Austin Yo mom that's what I was thinking the first second I saw the thumbnail
Zack in a nutshell
It's cause this game is a masterpiece. It's absolutely incredible
a reminder of why guys like this are not experts but everyday people like us with a fancy camera
moral lesson: never disregard and judge something without trying it first.
@switchforce makes an obvious mistake about switch games
This is news? Seriously it happens quite often
“I don’t like antiquated titles”
That’s why your generation is so disliked.
Sweet_Sukeban which makes his change in perspective encouraging. Its good to see games given a chance and then impact someone who was initially against it.
Sweet_Sukeban Bullshit, I grew up hating the Beatles and shit my parents liked. You're supposed to.
Sweet_Sukeban people always dislike younger generations. Nothing new
Chris Moore yeah, good thing I has born in the jrpg era
In way younger than him, and I'm hyped for this game lmao
Glad you turned around on this one, Zach. I’m eagerly awaiting this game on Friday!
YOU WERE SO WRONG TOP ON JAPAN AND US AMAZON BEFORE ITS EVEN RELEASED
lul
It’s Japan, they LOVE their rpg’s
The way they've applied 3D lighting techniques to the 2D sprites is gorgeous, I sat staring at a certain area on the demo for a while just taking it in
Why does this guy look so much like Shawn mendes. Every time I see his face, I feel like he's wispering in my ear " I know I can treat you better than he can."
I reject the notion that sprites are "retro" or "a thing of the past". It's a stylistic choice that will never go out of style.
Square enix needs to get props for bringing the old back in style.
I don't know about you, but I would kill for a FF1-6 remake in this style
Jethro Alcantara hahahah. Not just that. Chrono and so many more. Picking up the special edition after work today.
Funny how Square Enix fails to make modern 3D rpgs, like 13 or 15 and yet prove to still have the charm to make retro rpgs.
OMG I would give anything to see this happen!
Preordered this. Will pick this up on Friday. Pretty jazzed for this game. I love JRPGs since the Genesis/SNES era.
Similar, but I still have to find the time to finish Breath of the Wild. :C
This or owl boy
Nice to know that Ghost found a part time job...
So this is a video about how he judged a game before playing, then plays it and realized it's amazing like everyone who played it claims? AMAZING!
I'm glad you realized that. Your introduction is what is what's wrong with today's gamer. I am glad you gave it a chance.
Now play Persona 5.
Lens Hunter best game of all time imo
Lens Hunter I am so dissapointed that persona 5 isn't on the switch
I'm fine with it not being on the switch. If it was, I would never stop playing it.
You'll never see it coming!
Loved Persona 4 on ps2. Got easilly bored with 5 and never picked it up again.
I wish it had enemy health bars. Kind of a super essential thing to leave out. How will I know if I’m even leaving a dent on the enemy or if I’m just punching a steel wall? XD If it gets those health bars it’s an instant buy.
I think you gain that ability later in the game.
Yeah I feel you Zack. I wasn't looking forward to the game. But I decided to download the demo and my thoughts CHANGE. This game is so so good. Now I want to buy this game. It's worth the money.
I was exited for it, played the first demo and wasn't a huge fan but I loved the second demo lol
Devilnext 123 I saw it on one of Zack's videos of games in July (before I got my Switch a week or two ago), and the only think that caught my attention was the graphics. They just looked so unique by mixing retro style with lighting and shadows. When I got my Switch, I looked at free games in the EShop to see if there is ANYTHING that can distract me after I finished Mario Odyssey, and I saw the demo. I downloaded it, and I played it like 3 times! Music, characters, gameplay, EVERYTHING is awesome. I got Tressa, Cyrus, H'aanit, and Alfyn after my 3rd play-through. Too bad I probably can't get the game on the day it gets released...
Besher T I wouldn't worry about it. I waited a month or so to pick up Xenoblade and was happy to find that patches had addressed a few hindering concerns. Single player only stuff like this can always wait a few weeks. I'll pick it up at the end of the month.
Mark Ray Great! Thanks for reassuring me, I'm probably gonna pick it up at the end of this month too. Can't wait to play this game, I might even like it more than Odyssey...
I wish I could get into it, played the demo and just wasn’t my cup of tea.
I knew Octopath Traveler was going to be special the first time I watched the trailer.
The boss for primrose was the hardest thing on the planet
ThIS iSn’t OcToDAd 2
KarpTheMagikarp I know this was meant as a joke... But you DO realize Octodad: Dadliest Catch was a sequel to a freeware game called Octodad and so you should be asking for Octodad 3... Right?
KarpTheMagikarp despacito 2.0 is much better.
Octodad dadliest catch was Soo fun, but too short
Rainbowmon 2018 actually this is Octodad 4 because Octo expansion came out last month : 3
Best character is Tressa. She's just a little girl merchant trying to make a small come up in a giant world filled with adventure. Honestly starting with a child character made the experience more interesting for me because not a lot of RPGs start you off with kids as the protagonist and opt-in for more seasoned people that seem to be more adapted to life on the map.
About time you put video...into your videos. Way better than the podcast structure you had before.
I was the same way. After the E3 announcements, I went to pre-order a few games. I left this off of my pre-order list. A few days later, I download the demo and realized I can't get enough of it. After my 3 hours were up, I restarted with another group. Then another. I try to pre-order the Wayfarer's Edition and ALL GONE... I'm kicking myself over this now. lol
8 hours? Oh, you sweet summer child
You were wrong so wrong son. Admit it son! Say you were wrong! Who's your daddy?! Octopath Traveler that's who! That's who! Yeah boi! Give your money give give give!
When I'm not playing it, I can't stop thinking about this game, what is this sorcery?
I can’t WAIT for this game’s release tomorrow!!!! It’s going to keep me busy summer long.
How dare you put off octopath traveler before
Dragonk116 maybe he just found the game boring
It comes out today! I’m so pumped. My team will probably have Cyrus, Tressa, Olberic, and Primrose.
Apparently the “I was so wrong” videos are stacking up, maybe your early opinions are everything but reliable
He dont like jrpgs but knows everything about jrpgs.
What I like about Octopath, and why I'm excited to play it, is that it's not an epic. It's not a game where you play as a special 'chosen one' to save the world or about how the power of friendship triumphs all.
It's a game with eight smaller plots on a more relatable scale that commentates on the world the player characters live in. The player characters in question could easily just be random NPCs in other JRPGs, but here they are the focus since the story is more invested in the game's world than it is a single character's development.
Because of this, Acquire was easily able to get rid of any unnecessary high stakes. You don't save the world from yet another ancient evil. Because of this, the struggles are more relatable and down-to-earth.
Now, I wish there were more character interactions, but that doesn't stop this from bein a breath of freash air in an era where every other turn based game wants to become the next Final Fantasy 4, 6, or 7.
The whole “ I was so wrong about” title bait. Ah, ya got me anyway..
Gabe talks about it so much cuz it's lit af
JRPGs are ridiculously fun, I don't get people who criticize them just for being so formulaic and - admit it - Japanese
After knowing you for a while, I'm not surprised you claim to love something you didn't before, but now a lot of people do.
Great video! I love the format and I'm super happy you like this game.
What a goof. The first minute of this video ensured i'll never come back to this channel.
In the demo I chose Primrose and couldn't even beat her boss. I wouldn't call this game a pushover.
I had the same exact thing happen to me, I enjoy RPGs but not JRPGs since they often feel repetitive, and while I really like the art style the actual monsters made me really uninclined to play, but I decided to try the Demo and at least for my character the first boss just took way to long and I kinda just had to keep doing the same thing, using a Boosted Attack, healing when I'm low, and restoring my Mana when it got low, but after getting a second character the combat system starts to get better and the enemies get stronger so the game never gets boring, the only problem is purely just personal because as someone who has never played a JRPG I don't enjoy intensely long battle in a RPG battle system as it get's really repetitive, and makes me not want to fight and just run away from every enemie but I know I can't because then I have to do more grinding later on which is something I hope the game makes not take long.
I typically don't like JRPG's and don't think I've properly played one since the 16-bit era, but that demo has me HOOKED! The fact that it saves your progress is a brilliant way to get people interested that otherwise wouldn't buy it. What a great surprise, because I was pretty sure I would skip this game, but now I can't wait for my copy to come in the mail.
I have always believed in Octopath Traveler because of its 2D-3D and after the 3hr demo, I fell even more in love
On the pixel art: "Maybe it's not as cool looking as Spiderman on PS4 of SSB Ultimate."
What world do you live in? XD
Boi, was I wrong
I can't believe after you explained your entire reasoning for your initial beliefs, and even admitted your mistake, people are STILL complaining. Jesus, I hate this generation
I love Tressa. At least right now, she's essential in my party cuz she's getting me extra cash that allows me to upgrade armor and weapons.
I felt the same, Zack. Literally I've not felt any urge to buy or play the game since I didn't like the original demo, but I hear the major problem I had, walking speeds, were fixed and now I actually kind of want to get this game. To be honest, I might get both this AND Captain Toad.
This is for people who grew up in the 80's and 90's playing stuff like Lufia, terranigma. FF1-6, secret of mana, secret of evermore and so on.
My copy is on the way now! Will be in my hands tomorrow!
"Lull"
.
Octopath Traveller, YS VIII, Wolfenstein 2, Mario Tennis Aces, Crash Trilogy, Captain Toad, Shining Resonance, Hollow Knight, Fortnite, Paladins, Lumines, De Blob, Minecraft, Mega Man X Collection, Mario Rabbids DK Expansion, Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion...
.
I don't think that word means what you think it means
H'aanit speaks Middle English, man. Way earlier than Shakespeare.
"Not a JRPG fan"
*Nerd rage intensifies*
Judge not the unknown youngster.
Uh, no. The demo proves it's EXACTLY how you described it originally.
You didn't like Cyrus, but he is the strongest and best character to begin with. He has abilities to avoid monsters (evasive manouvers) and let you travel through the map and get the other character quicker, he shows at the start of every battle a weakness of an enemy, and has magic (every monster in the game is weak to magic).
Ghostrobo + Octopath = win!
Welcome to the fanbase, brother!
I did the exact same reversal. I did not care at all about the E3 footage, and usually fast forwarded through it... and I just bought it today and I'm already 4 hours in.
I'm fascinated by the art-style of the game, which mixes a kind of old Final Fantasy look with gorgeous effects and beautiful backgrounds. I do plan on getting this game but I've been slammed with work and haven't had a chance to finish Ys VIII yet so it may have to sit on my dresser for a week or two before I get to it.
Lycon Xero if you like the art style and gameplay you should check out Bravely Default.
the music!!! everyone forgets how awesome the music is!
It's a JRP, it's definitely going to start kicking your butt later in the game😂
3:50 "pixelated art isnt as cool looking as say spiderman or smash bros ultimate"
You're right, its better looking
I mean i think his all stems from a misunderstanding about the jrpg genre, not just octopath traveler
Similar experience: I hate final fantasy... *a month later* I love final fantasy...
I think this looks WAY better than Spiderman or Smash Bros. Personal taste.
This is an excellent video. I really enjoy seeing you or Gabe talk about and review games. Firstly, I enjoy the cut ins that you do while you talk about the game. I also enjoy the green screened background showing the game faded in the background while you talk. I also like seeing you talk about the game with some of the footage playing in the corner. This is a very professional and polished video. You guys have really stepped it up with your production! Nicely done!
I'm super excited for tomorrow. I have a file with a level 16 Olberic and Tressa, also with Therion and Cryus being close to that level. And I have Alfyn, but I won't be using him, too much. Also, their names are H'aanit and Cyrus. :v
I am glad to hear you were wrong about the game. I'm for one can't wait to get Octopath. And Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for my Switch. Hopefully tomorrow I will be getting them both.
Everytime someone says they don’t like jrpg’s. Doesn’t like those type of stories, or too lazy/gets annoyed at the lengthy gameplay. Usually jrpg players are a hardcore catagory of gamers
Why isn’t Gabe telling us about this game?!
To be fair, I did preorder and then cancel this two different times before finally committing on the third. So happy it will be here tomorrow!
I played the first Demo..... I deleted it and thought it sucked. I was bored one day and heard there was a new demo of the full game. I played it and got instantly addicted, and was counting down the hours until today. I was the first customer at best buy. Best RPG I have played since Super Mario RPG. Cannot wait to play more
The only thing that bothers me is the enemies showing up suddenly. My head hurts because the flow of the game is being cut by them. At least show them beforehand (in the game itself not some sort of separate screen)
Glad to see someone come around on this. Tired of hearing words like "antiquated" in regards to this game, or complaints that its full price because it uses sprites- If you've played the game the graphics presentation is so cool-its a design choice not a way to cut corners. And the price should be judged on the content and this game should have the type of playtime commitment of other AAA titles. There is still a place in the gaming world for turn based RPGs, and they are still my favorite, but games like Bravely Default and now Octopath have found ways to update systems to make it more interesting. And let's be honest, this is a AAA release, graphic style or not. This isn't one of Square's Tokyo RPG Factory offshoots, its a Square game. And that matters.
The story is really disappointing in this game. The RPG's of super nintendo and playstation were great. They'd bring together a group of different people by some commonality. They'd stick together. One thing led to another and another, and before you know it, the fate of the whole world was at stake.
The story in Octopath Traveler starts off ok, but after you get all 8 characters, they still pretend like people are traveling alone during their story arcs. It is really weird and disappointing. I've recently started ch 2 stories and each one leaves me waiting and wanting the new friends to stand up for each other in the face of adversity. Instead the game pretends like they aren't even there until the battle starts.
The only idea the game gives that these people are friends is some very Tales games' moments where you press the + button to hear dialogue between party members.
Glad to hear you had a change of heart on the game! Can’t wait for Friday....
You said two magical words "Golden Sun". Now I am honor bound by the oath I swore long ago and am going to pick this game up. To be honest I tried the demo from last year and it felt lackluster to me, I'm also not a huge fan of pixel art, I would have loved for this game to have hand drawn art mixed in with its 3D-ish backdrops. I guess what really bothered me about the art was the discrepancy between the detailed enemies and the low polycount heroes. I will give it a chance and hope for better in the future. Oddly enough I am enjoying Ys 8 right now.
this game hooked me since it was announced, now its out and im currently playing it
welcome young convert...welcome. Now, let me tell you about SUIKODEN.
To be honest about your expectations and to have them exceeded so much. I wonder who would dislike the video after seeing this video.
More like.. i was so wrong about... every single review on this channel.. hype boi
I did play the demo, and I couldn't stop until it kick me out, 3 straight hours, of good gameplay. The stories are not great, but the combat is good and the Chissie dialogue can make you 1 or 2 laughs.
Oh please. The moment the name of this game came out. I can tell it’s gonna be the Game of the Year! And it might be able to win Zelda too. Just look at how beautiful the art work of each character and how much the gameplay has been dedicated into.
If Sakurai does another ballot for Smash I better see a ton of people pick one of these eight amazing characters! That would be so epic to see one of them.
Also you need to get a hand on the boost system and breaks to get through even the beginning. I banged my head against The Dancer’s end boss until I got the strategy. Then I was kiiiiing
Same here! Never even thought about buying the game. Not a rpg guy at all but after trying the demo I was hooked. I ended up preordering the wayfarer’s edition lol
So this showed up in my recommendations and I was so confused when I saw Zach (Ghostrobo) on the thumbnail.
I adore the game because it is just so lovely. The battle system is very fun and the stories and characters are simple yet charming. It is a nice little breather in comparison to all those RPGs with intense stories and battle systems. It just is very enjoyable. I also love the interactions with NPCs.
