The Toyota Land Cruiser "80 Series" is a fantastic SUV -- and it's rapidly becoming an icon. Today I'm reviewing the FZJ80 Land Cruiser, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of the 1990s Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX450. Then I'm going to drive the Land Cruiser and show you what it's like on the road.

These things are absolute MONSTERS. I went on vacation to Ecuador and they had one of these at Cotopaxi with over 1.4 million miles on it. AND it was still chugging up mountains 😂 take that Land Rover.
The diesel engine I’m sure
My neighbor has a ‘97 Land Cruiser with over a half-million miles on the original engine. It’s driven on all seven continents. This is not a car, it’s a tank.
all 7 continents? fuck off with your lies
How on earth has it been to all 7 continents? What is he shipping it to a different continent every year 😂
Tejan Patel It’s been across the Outback, the Sahara, the Atacama, the Kalahari, and Siberia. It’s even been to the South Pole. He was part of Expeditions 7 a group that took Land Cruisers across the world. You can find information about the entire exploration and trip online
2JZ engineers? No shit
Tejan Patel fuck off I’ll fight you rn
When this thing somehow manage to break, you know your life hates you.
It's happened to mine, my bad luck is an inside joke amongst my family and friends though, so it makes sense.
Sure it breaks, but just less frequently than many other cars. It is also nicely simple to work on. A lot of space in the engine room and under the car. These have their typical problems that you need to know. Like in the early, diesel versions lower end bearings, pistons, also the diff locks, front axle. But every car has its typical problems. Some cars have more, some have less, and I would say this Toyota in the end has a lot less than many other cars.
I had a 97. Engine blew up at 180k miles. FML.
Michael Lutes that’s not even possible lol. Did someone swap your engine or pour oil or some shit into your gas tank...!?

Fun Factor 4? Imagine a weekend outside the city, with a lot of friends, muddy roads, some 4x4 adventure, and still feel nice and comfy inside, that´s a 10 in my book.
Most 4x4 can do that
Doug is being extremely critical on this FJ80 series. I had the Special Edition 1997 Landcruiser, bought in 2001. It was one of the best SUV, I ever owned. I have driven hundreds of various SUV's and trucks, and nothing beats this FJ80 series. The New Landcruiser in 1998 and onward just don't stand up to the original rugged, pure feel of this genuine Landcruiser built with sheer dedication.
Do they come as special edition or limited edition? Cause in the middle east we have them as a limited edition which comes with different wheels , electric winch and other stuff.
… but the 100 and 200 series still capable..
Did you watch the video? He literally praised it all the time for its capabilities and reliability. What more did he have to say? Come on don't be ridiculous
Doug just didnt factor in the off road capabilities probably because he didn't want to take such a mint vehicle off road. And the petrols were gas guzzlers.
“ very reliable goes on for ever” “ lacks modern luxury features “ I can’t help thinking there is a connection
It's almost as if simplicity helps lifespan.
Ya don't say....
Cars from the 90's until around 2005 were the sweet spot. Modern enough to be reliable. Simple enough to be wrenchable.
I'm wondering if in 2040 people will be thinking the same thing about 2020's cars
and people take out some of these extra "luxury's" to make them even more reliable. Thats why you can find lots of rear heaters on ebay. They're only needed if you live in alaska
I can smell that 90's Lexus interior. Those who know, know.
Luke Martin I absolutely know that smell
Yes, like a 90’s BMW has its own smell
The smell of reliability and quality.
I own one, i feel now
Or the crayon smell of early 2000's Volkswagens
I worked at a Toyota Dealer for a bit in 1997. This was my favorite vehicle they made. I liked the engine and its low speed torque. We used to call them Land Crushers because they were so heavy. They were known to eat brakes because of all the weight. Fun Fact, When we would prep these for sale we would let air out of the tires to get them to the proper psi. The tires were up at 80psi for the trip from Japan. They said it was to keep them from rocking around on the boat.
I don't recall the sticker price new, but I remember you could get a Tacoma extended cab for 13k and some change.
Arguably the greatest overall road going vehicle ever built.
You better say it!

@@thomasburr9244 4runner doesnt have a solid front axle, has weaker and smaller parts overall.
@@KiyaWarrior I'm aware
The 200 series is better in every way
The amount of people that don’t know Lexus is Toyota is staggering.
In general the Europeans and Japanese have done a far better job distinguishing their luxury brands from their mass-market models than the Americans have. GM is probably to blame for that - putting Cadillac badges on an otherwise unmodified Chevy Cavalier and charging twice as much back in the 80s.
Lexus is the luxury version of Toyota but this is CLEARLY a Lexus LX450 and NOT a Toyota Landcruiser. Granted, The LX450 is the luxury version of a Toyota Landcruiser but many features are different not just the badge and decals, so @Doug DeMuro really shouldn't refer to this as a "Toyota Landcruiser".

I do agree . But if I owned a land cruiser. I would intend on keeping it and the seats would definitely have some tlc.
Those seat covers have been replaced. The quality of the leather that Toyota was using in that time period was terrible. No way the original seats survived this long without cracking.
The antenna control is to make sure that it won’t snap off when you are tearing through the jungle blasting your jungle radio.
Totally agree with you. This car was designed to be covered in dirt, not for a car wash.
Indeed… can't believe all he said was "carwash" 😂
The antenna on my truck doesn't go down and I can't tell you how many times it got caught in tree branches…
Especially if you can choose how much of antenna you want poking out, that feature's clearly put in there with offroading in mind.

In my 1997 "Collectors Edition" Landcruiser I added the factory optional pop out cup holder where the slot is above the stereo head unit. The cup holder cup holder assembly replaces the recessed "wallet" holder. Also to note the sound system(speakers+ multi CD unit)) were also upgraded in the 450 model. I actually think it may have been be included with the 450 you reviewed. And The 97' collectors edition which was an additional $7745.00 included the wood trim, climate control, leather steering wheel, leather power sport seats, Privacy gless, leather headrests, premium 3 in 1 combo stereo, sunroof, body side molding, black pearl badging, collectors edition badge and collectors edition floor mats.
My truck also had a front and rear locking differentials added for $825.00. The sticker price was $50,233.00 which included 475.00 destination & handling charge. On top of that $2788.00 of distributor options were added. TOTAL sticker was $53,021.00 which was more then the Lexus 450 price! Just an FYI- I have over 300K on this can WITHOUT and major engine repair! SAME head gasket! AMAZING!!!
Doug: “The most half hearted luxury re-brand ever!”
Cadillac Cimmaron: “Hold my beer!”
The reason we love our 80 series (coming from an Aussie): Coil springs, factory diff locks, toyota parts availability, toyota reliability, huge aftermarket support and that sweet 1HD-FT (twin overhead cam factory turbo diesel that goes forever, petrol-or-gas models are worthless here).
I think from our perspective we love them over the older even more basic models is they are actually better off-road, more power from a much better engine, way more flex (especially modified) from that sweet 4-corner coil suspension.
The 60 series for instance is also loved, but the engines don't compare and 4-wheel leaf suspension is terrible for extreme stuff.
preachy!! :D
@@bosstowndynamics5488 you mean in AU? I mean, I personally own a 79 series for this reason. But for serious off-roaders the 70 series is number one due to being a fantastic tax writeoff, the 80 series that is over 20 years old now is for purely offroad reasons I would say preferential in Aus. The GQ patrol utes (4 wheel coils) are really soughtafter now, but the powerplants suck...
1HD-FT does not have "twin overhead cams". It has one camshaft..

I never realized how much it looks like a longer 4Runner from the profile. Both are such classics.
Can't wait to buy this in 10 years for $40k
“This is a Toyota Land Cruiser”
Shows Lexus
Same car...
@@bsosmoove Still, it's slightly weird.
@@kangvp9512bro there were only two differences - you had a pioneer sound system with a 6 cd changer and you had genuine wood. Literally no other difference. It's the same thing with the tahoe/yukon/escalade
@@naboo3901 I said it's only *slightly* weird. I know they're the same car, but I didn't think he was gonna use the Lexus.
mynameis mynameis they look different
These things are gonna be even more awesome to see 25 years from now.
I think the Greenies would want them taken to the wreckers and replaced with EVs.
There might be an environmental case for protecting them as they last forever. Think about all of the energy and resources required to manufacture a new car or three. They live about 3 or 4 times longer than normal vehicles. They're everywhere. Most 90's cars were dead and buried years ago.
My father had the Toyota land cruiser Prado one of the 90s and then another one of 2005. These things last forever. These cars are everywhere here in Colombia. Some people even exchange real state for one of these cars lol.
I really love these cars of the 90s and even the early 00s. I agree it was the sweetspot between old and new. That's why I love my Roadmaster Estate Wagon so much. It has a lot of contemporary features such as airbags, ABS, automatic climate control, and a premium sound system. Yet still is old fashioned in terms of size, and its V8 RWD layout.
Agree, my 93 Roadmaster Estate is a joy to drive and I own 2 of the LX470
Roadmasters look nice. The models with the wood panels are pretty cool.
Doug, the type of guy to expect a 1997 vehicle to have modern tech
W140 Mercedes S-Class has entered the chat
Fun Fact: Toyota sold these with an optional sunroof--50cal mount in the Middle East and North Africa
Where - can I get - one of THOSE???
Love your videos! You're awesome! I'm wondering when you're going to a gen 3 or 4 Toyota 4Runner?
