    Hey Eric let me start off by saying that in all of RUclips, your videos offer the absolute highest amount of relevant technical content per unit of time watched. Hands down...no contest . Heck , I paid Darin about $600 for a lot of what you offer for free. I mean that was a while ago and I still consider it the best 600 I ever spent but I still appreciate what you are doing. Second, get you some EFI. I convert Harleys into "manual flex fuel vehicles" and alcohol is liquid torque. Most of my builds like to hit lambda .82-.825 by 150-200 rpm before the torque peak and then taper out to .85ish by the horsepower peak. I'm a big time data shithead and being able to tune each cylinder as it's own separate engine is like a gift from heaven. On a Harley with alcohol a 3000rpm spread from peak torque (low 4k's rpm) to peak hp (low 7k's) is a reality . Give it a try sometime

    Methanol also makes more torque because the oxygen content by weight is 50 percent. Low rpm doesn’t have as much cylinder temp so it’s not all about heat absorption. The cooling effect is more horsepower on a forced induction application from the cooling effect itself and this is why it’s a larger difference compared to an NA engine.

      Methanol isn’t self oxidizing as I understand it, but I guess it depends on how you define that. But it does have a much lower stoichiometric AFR, about half that of gasoline. But still a lot higher than nitro.

    The converter sounds extremely soft/lazy in that thing. Call FTI and order part number SS888BA. My truck will 60' 1.39-1.40 with that converter, and I have about 150 less horsepower than what you have.

  • @davelowets
    @davelowets 29 дней назад

    I feel that a bit more converter would lower your E.T. a food amount. Perhaps as much as a tenth or so. Just a few hundred RPMs more, and just generally a touch "looser" would do it some good, I think... 👌
    Edit: I see that you already realize that in a later part of the video..
    You know as well as I that a torque converter can make or break a vehicle as far as the E.T. is concerned. It's too bad that they are SO expensive, it can be PRETTY costly to play about with converter tuning... 😟

But these are just my own guesses and you need to take them for what they are. Oh, one more thing. I am definately no superman.

    You need more compression with methanol. I ran 14.2 on my little big block chevy 402, (destroked 427, not a bored 396) in a tubbed Chevelle. I also ran much more duration, way more.... 300/320 690 lift roller endurance/marine cam with a rev kit.. I ran a little over 6000 custom stall with 5:36 gears with a glide and would be a little over 9k running in the low 9's in the traps. Methanol na is about the combination all working together, and as high a compression and rpm as your parts will allow.... You have a great gas motor combo, not so much for methanol. Methanol has half the energy of gasoline per gallon and you use twice as much of it. Which nets very little gains without a compression and rpm increase. Sure you will get some from the cooling and timing it will take. But you need to squeeze it with everything you have and possibly spin it a bit higher to get serious improvements with the same ci and top end. Methanol is far cheaper than racing gas, at least it used to be. So it is worth using just for that fact alone. You will go thru a lot more oil thou, a lot more...

    Love seeing gains on the s10! At this point, I think 100 shot would give you the tq you need to get out of the hole, and I bet won’t have that draw down on the converter but you may have to go back to the 4.30 to have the gear to run it out, what do you think? With the fuel out of the gas tank, and good air I think it will be knocking on 10.50s

    That rear end acts surprisingly good. Not perfect by a long shot, but could be a lot worse. I would try to get the power valve to work, and tune the jets for part throttle starting at 50% and pushing it to 100% before hitting second gear. This should take care of the richment on low revs, and lean it out at top end. For the exhaust, everything could be a size bigger. The heat colouring comes from restriction. 1/4 inch bigger primaries, 1" bigger collectors, x-pipe and Nascar style wide ends. Transition from head to tube needs to be smooth and about 4" long, and the ends about foot wide pointing upwads and aft. This helps with scavenging on high speeds, and pushes the rear down on low speeds.

    One nice thing about efi is its easy to do things like fatten it midrange and then lean it out top end. Throttle body efi would also still maintain the charge cooling. You can probably do the same thing with a carb but it's a little trickier.

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets 29 дней назад

      Throttle body EFI will NOT maintain the same Latent Heat of Vaporisation effect as a carburetor will.
      An EFI throttle body injection system does NOT have a venturi in the barrels that causes the pressure drop which makes the L.H.V. cooling effect happen.
      And no, it isn't hard to tune the circuits in a carburetor to change the A/F through the various throttle positions and RPM band.
      With the Billet metering blocks and carb bodies available today, EVERY orifice inside AND outside of the carburetor has a replaceable "jet" in it that either meters fuel or air in that particular part of the circuit that it is in.
      Today's carburetors are VERY easily tuneable in every part of every circuit for fuel as well as air. One just has to have complete knowledge of how exactly all those circuits work, how they interact with each other, and in what part of the throttle position and RPM band they are active. Once a guy knows all that, it's very easy to make adjustments to wherever he wants in those areas. It's just a matter of unscrewing a little brass "jet" and screwing in a new one of a different size.
      I actually think that it's harder to learn all the software and computer jazz, than it is to adjust a high-end carburetor. Even with E.F.I., one STILL has to be knowledgeable in the same areas of tuning, and the causes & effects of changing the A/F ratio in the power band. It works the same with E.F.I. or a carb, it's just with one you are pressing buttons, and with the other you are replacing threaded jets.

      @@davelowets
      You seem confused. A pressure drop is not required for LHV, vaporization is. Take some rubbing alcohol and put it on your arm and note how cool it feels.
      And, even if a change in pressure was needed, what do you imagine happens when the fuel goes from a high pressure liquid to a low pressure spray/vapor as it exists the injector? Goes from 40-60psi to zero (or to manifold pressure rather)? That is a MUCH greater pressure drop than fuel sees with air going through a venturi.
      On a dyno we see no difference between tbi and a carb in terms of power although both tend to have a slight advantage over port efi due to the charge cooling with port efi having less time/volume to cool vs tbi/carb.
      And I never said a carb can't fatten the midrange then learn out top end, I just said it's a lot easier to do with efi. With efi I can tune individual rpm everywhere in the fuel curve if I wanted to.
      Trying to that with a carb is very difficult, not impossible.
      I have both carbs and efi and I will say this - once you learn them both and set them up the main difference is tuning efi is way faster, carbs are usually much cheaper.

    That under hood temperature is killing your engine power. I tried a K&N velocity stack on a flat hood and it improved.2 tenths in the 1/4.

    Eric, did you upgrade your fuel pump? Do you have a g meter in your system? A loose rule of thumb is 8 psi of fuel pressure is lost for every 1 g of acceleration. So for example if you are pulling 2 g’s of acceleration and have 16 psi of fuel pressure, the fuel will literally stop in the line for a moment and I have seen many layover issues caused by this issue and people always think their pump is strong enough and never is.

      Methanol boils at 140F.
      -- I don't think methanol evaporation is really what gets us. When the fuel hits a surface above its boiling point, the fuel converts from liquid phase to gas phase and occupies more space that would otherwise be occupied by useful air.
      -- I have a theory on how to test this. A small block chevy with standard valve angles will lose more power at the top end where the horsepower is already beginning to decline. This implies that the fuel is hitting the head and cylinders due to all of their crooked geometry. The mid-range power is probably killer though, because the fuel is kept suspended in the air and has time to exchange heat.
