    Great Tip Bum! Your "Zone Searching" is especially good news for Senior Surf Casters. Many Seniors think their age limits their catch due to their inability to cast far. My Dad always reminded me to start "short casting" a rod or two when starting the day.

  • @BoBo-tx9sp
    @BoBo-tx9sp 5 лет назад +4

    I learned this on my own long ago. Many think you have better chances throwing as far out as possible. I always throw my rods at different distances till I get consistent hits then shift to that distance. once it dies down I go different distances again until I get hits again. I've caught pomps as far out as I can cast and 15 ft from shore.

    I have found this to be true up here in NC. I can’t handle 5 rods anymore but I always use at least 3. This is a very well done video explanation of the technique. When I was younger I always tried to really get it halfway to Europe but I have learned that I’ve almost always caught more fish in closer than farther out at least on the beaches where I fish. What has screwed up the fishing up here is that after these bad summer and fall storms there is a lot of beach and dune erosion. The resorts and land owners dredge up sand from a 1/4 mile out in the water and pump it on the beach to build them back up. When they do that the fishing is ruined for years! I guess I wouldn’t want my beach house getting swallowed by the ocean either but I know enough not to want a front row house particularly one too close to the water w/o a considerable dune barrier. Reading a beach is almost an art form and for one as young as you, you are very good at doing it. Tony at FishGum put me on to your channel and I am very glad he did!

    I don’t know if you’re aware of how appreciated info like this is. Especially to someone like myself who wants to be a guide in a few more years. I may add a small pocket notebook to my tackle bag to start keeping notes on things like these naturally occurring and changing beach structures and in other bodies of water as well. This video causes me to be a subscriber. Looking forward to exploring what info you have available on this channel.

    Awesome video man. I'm as guilty as anybody that thinks casting further is better. I usually wade out to my ears and cast as far as I can. I've caught a lot of sharks and catfish by doing so but never a pompano lol. I appreciate the tip.

    Really nice video to help people catch pompano. It's nice to see the locals helping other anglers to catch fish. So many of the locals don't take the time to help the visitors to the area. Being a local that doesn't live down there full time anymore it's nice to see a fellow Bam'er show are guests are southern hospitality!!! Keep up the good work.

      @@volcement CNS is closed right now, but that weekend I got some nice whiting and a small pomp. Went this weekend to NSB. Lots still open, but beach ramps are closed. Bite was slow on Saturday, but a few people said they tore it up the day before. I got there around sunrise and the Bethune lot was about halfway full. Commercial guys apparently tearing it up with peeled shrimp around the 18th street walkway. I'll probably try again this weekend. Hope that helps!

      Fish a silly jig with a pink stinger fly. If you don't know what one is Google it. Pomps love them when there in. Throw it out there let it sink to the bottom and sweep it in. Keeping it close to the bottom zone. Don't lift it too high. Yellow and white silly jig with a pink fly stinger hook is my favorite color. Some time it doesn't matter if you have the fly on there and some times that's only what they want. I have fished side by side with guys without the fly and guys with would catch 10 with compared to 2 without the fly. Waly world has them with out. I stock up on both. You can set lines like he does here and cast a silly jig off to the side.

    As always good info. Another tip I use is to scout the beach at low tide. I rarely catch them good at low tide here in south florida as they tend to stay on the outside of the bar and are hard to reach. I like to drive up and down the coast and check each spot at low tide as you can easily see the bars, holes, rips and can then concentrate on the fishy areas when fishing on a higher tide when they may be harder to see. Hope you don't mind me posting this tip.
    Also do the fish bites go bad? I know they lose their color but was told they still work? I haven't used them in a while and found a few old packs?

    • @BamaBeachBum
      @BamaBeachBum  6 лет назад

      No thanks for the tip! And they won’t go bad as long as they stay dry and out of the heat.

    • @capeheartriz
      @capeheartriz 6 лет назад

      yep...and you have keep doing this as the sand is always in motion and the bars are always moving......with good casting skill you can reach good water at all tides here on the east coast of Florida.....( unless the east winds beat you and these winds dominate the winter fishing season.....here.....

    • @jonathank5289
      @jonathank5289 6 лет назад

      I'd say its alot different in south florida. The sandbars are a couple hundred yards offshore. Now up north of Boca its a bit different plus you can slam the whiting and glassnosers along with redfish and black drum. Good luck catching a redfish or black drum in the surf in deep south florida. I've often fished at low tide and waded out the 200 yards just to be able cast to deeper water. By the time you walk back in you have 350 yards of line out. When while the sand bar eats up your line just like sand paper. Well the run is over down here so just have to wait till the spring run. I really only get whiting once the sun sets. Now up in central florida its a whole different game. You can fill the cooler with whiting if the pomps aren't biting along drum. You don't have to cast more that 50 feet at many spots.

    • @capeheartriz
      @capeheartriz 6 лет назад

      the bars are different up and down the treasure coast but high tide works fine for pompano if your a short caster.....low tide does require....at most beaches....some distance casting ability...I'm surprised at how close the pompano run on the gulf beaches...considering how shallow that water is.....the whiting are everywhere all year long....good to eat the larger ones.....not exactly a sporting fish.....though......like reeling in a cat....

    That first scene you just narrated about the other guy not getting on the fish while you were well this last Sunday a friend and myself experienced the exact same thing together with another group of 8 to 10 guys & in-between us there was just one guy reeling in pompano one after another in total he banged about 8 3kg + each while we just looked on with rods in hand.

We hit the surf for real rock fishing chasing biggg tautog And stripers 40+ waders cleats surf smashing on you best fishing in the planet lol good luck out there catch a record remember more rods more trash in the water some people don’t clean up sucks to say also more lines in the water that get snagged

    This works great. I went out today with just two rods for the setup. Tried different depths, and when I found the bite, I put all my rods there at that depth. Caught about 20-25 whiting today and one was about 18” stud.
    Btw, they were ALL caught 10-15 yards from the beach.

      I use a variety of baits from shrimp, ghost shrimp, sand fleas, and different flavor Fishbites. They all produce at different times. I use mostly single drop pompano rigs with 10’ & 11’ rods.

      Cool! Thank you! I tried today, but no pompano. Maybe they weren't cruising by where i was.

      He's as far west on the panhandle as you can go and just a mile or so over the state line in Alabama (I believe)
