    I caught my first two bull red fish today on pompanos rigs I tied, using fish bites. I doubled up with one on one rig and one on the other at the same time. One red was 40" the other was 37" . A fellow fisherman came along and helped me out. These were the largest fish I had ever caught
    After watching you I decided to vacation in Pensacola. I also have caught my first two Pompano again on fish bites. one 16" and one 18".
    Your enthusiasm has been catching..
    I have tried natural bait, sand fleas and shrimp, but I have one caught fish on the hook with fish bites.
    If there was a way to post a picture of the bull reds, I would.
    Thanks for your videos, keep it up.

    THANK YOU! I just got back from OBX and made my own pompano rigs instead of using those wire ones you get at the tackle shops. It was easy following your video...and they worked great! And I made my own 'flip flop floats' I saw on Salt Strong's channel. And this was the first time I used 1/0 in-line circle hooks. They worked flawlessly. Thanks again...love your enthusiasm - keep up the great work!
    By the way, I didn't buy any shrimp or squid this year, just Fishbites and caught red and black drum, whiting and lots of pompano!
    Hope you and your friends survived the hurricanes these past few weeks...

    Dude, I can't get enough of your videos, I love them! Keep em' coming! I'm planning a trip to Cape Outlook in the outer Banks early summer and that is prime time for sea mullet (whiting) and I think pomps will be active too. I just made my first attempt at tying your pompano rig and it's not pretty. My starting measurements that I based on your specs didn't turn out to be the target length, I couldn't find the floats at Bass Pro, I got the 30 lb fluoro (I might use the 20 lb mono on the next one), but I think it might still work. I'm sure I'll get better the more I do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Have you tried cutting part of the dropper loop near the knot to produce a single drop line? It seems the single line would be less visible to fish that might be leader shy. Thanks for your videos; I've learned a lot from you!

    • @capeheartriz
      @capeheartriz 4 года назад

      done it both ways....my opinion, makes no difference....other then you have to be careful the single line isn't to long or it will wrap around the main leader line....if your using 20# test.....He catches lots of fish so I guess we can say that speaks for itself....If your down in the Florida keys on a dead calm, gin clean water day..then I think tackle could be an issue....

  • @Floridamarty
    @Floridamarty Год назад

    I appreciate the video. I mainly surf fish NE Florida. I have been tying my own rigs for a few years now and have experimented plenty. I have mixed feelings about beads and floats. I seem to have a better bite ratio when I fish just the baited hook. I typically use sand fleas, sometimes blanched sand fleas, and seldom fish bites. The blanched fleas are an attractant themselves, or so it seems. I also stopped using kahle or circle hooks, again, a get a higher percentage of hookups when fishing a J hook. Just my 2 cents. My last Pompano outing, 10 bites, landed 9, kept 6. Also, fishing sand fleas I seem to hook many bonnet head and lemon sharks, the circle and kahle hooks often fail to hold onto the sharks, where the J hooks hold.

    • @philippians4410
      @philippians4410 5 месяцев назад

      Those are likely blacknose sharks not lemons..next time you get one look at the snout and you will see a black marking on the tip. Lemon sharks also typically have a more rounded snout like a bull shark. Just my guess it is blacknose what you’re getting because I get quite a few of them on the pompano rig as well.

    I could only find orange floats locally, so I "cored" some foam (the rubbery stuff, not the poly) with a 3/8" pipe, sharpened around the edges. - clipped the pieces so they were about the size of a mini marshmallow, strung them up on a long piece of #12 wire, sprayed them neon, and had more floats than I will need for 5 seasons. Haven't been often enough to seriously stress test the hand-tied rigs, but I'll keep throwing them.

      The color helps catch the attention of fish feeding in the surf. The sand fleas have a bright orange sack of eggs that it is imitating. Also, the cochina shells have lots of different colors on them. This is the main 2 food sources for fish feeding in the surf.

      Take a random lil piece of light fishing line, run it through the end of your dropper loop and bend it, then run the ends of that random piece of line through your hook eye and use it as a sort of needle to thread your hook onto the dropper loop.

      @@domana100 YVW, I use 20 lb and 1/0 for pompano as well. another thing you could do is tie a T-knot for your loops. Which is pretty much just a surgeon’s loop with extra twists followed by a dropper loop over it. Then cut one end of the loops close to your standing line, and tie your hook on with a uni knot, or whatever knot you prefer. A ‘high low rig’. I use that rig when fishing a heavier 30-50 lb leader not intended for pompano. There’s likely a lot of videos on here to show you how to tie that rig.

    I use a different rig due to the fact that I want to remove/replace hooks. It's called a "Mortician Rig". The knots I use are Figure eight knots (loop on end and standard in middle) and noknot knot for snelling the hooks (snell is recommended for circle hooks).
    It works great when the blue fish bite off the hook, just replace the missing hook in seconds. I have used them with three hooks. That's when replacing a hook in seconds pays off. blue fish can be annoying sometimes.
    Give it a try - it cast great and helps remove twist due to way the hooks are attached.

    Great and very informative video! I'm tieing all my rigs for a trip coming up and I was curious if you found that the floats help on both dropper loops or more so on the bottom dropper loop to keep the crabs from having an all you can eat buffet! I have also been in between 20lb & 30lb test as far as presenting bait goes or do you think that would be more due to strength of the current? Thanks for all the awesome videos!

      20lb mono or 30lb fluorocarbon. Floats do help keep the bottom hook off the sea floor, so that's not a bad idea at all.

    If you had to choose just 2 colors of beads to have to tie rigs what would they be? Also how often do you use a float?

    I just put a double overhand loop knot in on the bottom and feed it through the pyramids for easy change out instead of using a snap-on swivel.
    I have lots of structure in one of the park beaches that I frequent near me so it sometimes help when I have to yank the rig out so I at least get some of my tackle back. I also use double overhand knots on the two hook rigs but I like that knot you showed which seems more reliable as sometimes they tend to slip so the float, bead and hook all end up at the line.
    I'm going to give that one a try. Great video, thanks!

      Yes I see a lot of guys just using the loop knot on bottom for the pyramid, I just feel better about having the swivel for some reason.

    For my floats l like to use those bright orange foam ear-plugs. I get them for literally a dollar a dozen. Then l cut em in hal. So l end up with 24 floats for $1. Then l just poke a hole in em with a toothpick or micro screwdiver... whatever's handy.

      Bama Beach Bum Thanks. I am in South Carolina. Couldn't find any so I just cut one of those little cigar floats into halves and 3 pieces to see which size works better.
