  • The Black Orchid - Anthony Quinn and Sophia Loren star as longtime widower Frank and recently widowed Rose, lonely hearts who discover something special in The Black Orchid, a sensitive comedy romance directed by Martin Ritt (Norma Rae, Murphy's Romance).
    The Black Orchid (1958)
    Director: Martin Ritt
    Writers: Joseph Stefano
Stars: Sophia Loren, Anthony Quinn, Peter Mark Richman
    Genre: Drama, Romance
    Country: United States
    Language: English
Release Date: 3 September 1958 (Italy)
Filming Location: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Synopsis:
After mobsters murder her husband, Rose Bianco works long hours making artificial flowers, to support herself and her son. Some suspect that Rose's demand for a lavish lifestyle pushed her husband to a life of crime, and they blame her for his death. Widower Frank Valente is attracted to Rose, and must convince her that real love exists. He must also deal with his own daughter, who has her own reasons for opposing his marriage to Rose.
    Reviews:
"The Black Orchid is a beautiful movie. Anthony Quinn plays a cheerful middle aged Italian American who comes into Sofia Loren's life and makes her realize that there is goodness and happiness in life.
The movie has interesting characters and great acting, especially by Anthony Quinn and Sofia Loren who give great performances. It has several touching scenes such as when Anthony Quinn has the conversation with Sofia Loren's son, and when Sofia Loren and Ina Balin (Anthony Quinn's daughter) make breakfast. The most heartwarming scene is when Anthony Quinn subtlety asks Sofia Loren to marry him and her smile is priceless. The movie also showed the importance of prayer. At the point in the movie where everything is spiraling out of control, they decide to go to church and pray. Right after this, everything seems to fall into place. Sofia Loren is radiant and Anthony Quinn makes you smile in this tender love story."

Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn played their roles with such sensitivity . I bet many will be surprised to learn that Loren only turned twenty four during filming. For me she always had a beautiful yet mature face, for her age. Today, she still looks amazing - 90 in September! (2024) I also read that she acquired her scarred chin from flying shrapnel during WW2!

This movie honestly caught me off guard. It has one of the most unique stories that takes you on a very interesting and personal journey into people's lives that I didn't expect. It has superb realism and incredible acting, and I must say at least momentarily restored my faith in mankind, considering we are now all living in an Orwellian nightmare so this was the perfect antidote... at least for the moment.
Anthony Quinn's character has such a beautiful energy and optimism, you can't help but feel his every emotion and what he is going through and Sophia Loren delivers an equally riveting performance that makes you feel like you are actually there with them and she is the perfect counterpart for him here. They both should have at least been nominated for an Oscar for their incredibly moving and heartwarming performances. The young man who played her son was also incredible and adorable in his role as well as the actress who played his daughter. Everybody was great here it truly was an amazing production. The director has to get a nod here as well as the movie had great flow and the camera definitely caught so much of the emotional energy between these characters. A real tearjerker at the end. A masterpiece for the ages!

We are not living an "Orwellian nightmare" we simply live the Apocalypse. Trust me, I speak perfecttly Greek and have studies Ancient Greek for most of my life.I also study the original handscripts, that later the Masonς changed and now sell it as "Bibles" All the content on all versions even the Greek ones, are all changed with one purpose, to mislead humanity and hide the Truth. Most of the true profecies and what the original Apocalypse says. have almost all fullfiled. We are not at the beginning of the end, we are AT the end. The one world dictatorship, of the AntcΗriςτ, has already been established. These events, will lead to the final phase of WWIII,where they will introduce him,. as the only savior of humanity. They already did that, through many King's and polititiant's speeches, like King Charles a couple of years ago, where he clearly said, that one king rules the whole world and we have to trust him...That's exactly what the Bible says. The first years,.Goid said on his message, he would rule behind the scene... Isn't that TRUE?? I and many people who kept their logic, see it is true. I only speak about facts.

This film covered some sensitive issues with compassion & empathy. Anthony Quinn always was a great actor, Sophia Loren proved herself to be his equal. Their scenes together were so warm & real, at times they made me smile. It was so easy to feel sympathy for the children of the main characters, & it didn't get mushy to do it. I've never seen this film before I'm glad I have. The positivity of the film was shown withAnthony Quinn's character's belief that, we all deserve to see & believe in rainbows. Now I'm being mushy, but that's how this film has made me feel.

This was so beautiful! I cried! Not overdone, pretty realistic, serious life issues and still managed to have genuine romanticism coupled with a happy ending?! Absolutely Gorgeous Film!💜

  • @evaphillips2102

Gosh this movie. The plot is simple and yet the characters are SO complex. Mary’s dad developed a savior complex after losing his wife since in his mind he could not save her. That’s why he is willing to take on a temperamental woman with a child and a past in a time when that kinda thing was openly discouraged, he was willing to marry Rose and sweep her off her feet, adopting her son to get him out of the work camp. Mary may have a mental illness like her mother did, which is why she makes decisions that don’t really make any sense to anyone but her. I wish this movie was more popular so it would be reacted to by Cinema Therapy or someone who could provide further insight into the varying personalities, dynamics and resulting conflict. There is so much to be learned in these old movies most people just don’t know.

Sophia Loren is my all time favourite actress, she is beautiful and can act well, has a very expressive face, a rare good treasure. When Sophia's eyes filled with tears, she looked beautiful with heartfelt emotion. And Anthony Quinn seemed to be affected by Sophia's acting talent, he played his role with a special tenderness just by being in her presence and acting with her.

I struck gold today! This movie tonight with absolutely beautiful artists!! I thought I would never have the privilege of seeing Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn star in such a wonderful film! And also earlier another film starring Patricia Neil and Shelly Winters in An Unremarkable Life!! Both films had so much substance and depth and both ended happily! I’m so grateful for these wonderful old productions! Today’s movies literally just don’t cut it, except for maybe a few!! Thank you for this upload!! 🙏🏻

How can anyone not love Anthony Quinn and Sophia Loren? Two of my all time favorite actors. I chose to watch this movie just because I saw that Quinn is in it. I had never even heard of it before. Love it. Somehow it makes me remember 'The Vist'; another Quinn classic, with my favorite actress of all time, Ingrid Bergman.
