    Hi Phil, great review. One thing to comment on is the function of pedal assist, I think you’re mistaking it for a throttle.
    Pedal assist is power provided to the pedals to make pedaling easier, less force needed on the pedals when going on hills and such. Hope this makes sense, I don’t own an e-bike but it’s how I understand its function. Have a good day.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  4 месяца назад +1

      You're partly right, Joseph. 😊 I should have explained it better in the video. The way it should work is, Pedal Assist level 1 should stop providing motor power at a set speed, say 10 mph. Then level 2 might be 12 mph, etc. up to level five. That is usually adjustable in the menu but there were no instructions on how to change them. I'll be working with them to get it right.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop , In my experience the PAS levels in most ebikes have nothing to do with the throttle. With most ebikes sold in the US, the throttle will provide power up to 20 mph. The PAS levels are either set by either watts or mph, and will provide power up to 20 mph (class 1 or 2) or up to 28 mph (class 3). According to the web site, the L20 2.0 can go 28 mph, so you should be able to unlock it to function as a class 3 bike.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  4 месяца назад

      @@amosbatto3051 Well, Amos, on the eBikes I have ridden, the throttle controls the speed up to the level of PA you have selected. For instance, Level 1 throttle only takes you to 10 mph, Level 2 15 mph, Level 3 17 mph, etc. OR, no throttle, peddling takes you to those pre-set speeds with motor assistance.

    There's nothing wrong with the speed sensor, pedal assist means you must pedal to gain some assist. Throttle is limited to 20mph, so don't throttle if you want to go faster, just pedal and change up through the assist levels and you'll reach higher speed (assuming you've set the limit higher than 20mph). The older L20 isn't throttle limited to 20mph, it'll go up to the same speed as maximum pedal assist (25mph on pedal assist 5) no matter what level of pedal assist is set.

      Wow, you seem to have great knowledge of ebikes, John! I have so many questions! Why did Engwe agree to send me a new controller (until they said they don't have any, being a new company) when they watched the video? Why do my other ebikes, (I have seven now) work without peddling? Each pedal assist level has a setting maybe 10 mph for PA 1, 12 for PA 2 etc. They all go up to a different speed in each level without peddling! Sure, I can peddle to a different speed in each level, as well, but that is not my point! I sure hope you can answer all my questions for me! 😊

    • @johnlista
      @johnlista 3 месяца назад

      Hi Phil. No, not an expert, I could be wrong but as I understand things, this is a legal requirement to comply with USA class-2 e-bike laws in certain states. I have an L20 with 250w motor and 48v battery. To comply with the law, Engwe ships to UK with throttle disabled and pedal assist limited to 25kmh (15.5mph). When throttle is enabled it will reach the speed limit on throttle only except when in pedal assist zero. To gain more speed, you simply increase the limit in settings and I can achieve a whopping 25mph! 🥴
      I'm probably stating the obvious here but you could try pedalling only and see if pedal assist 4 & 5 takes you above 20mph, if not, then try increasing speed limit (lots of RUclips demos or text me, maybe I can help).
      Re: Engwe being a new company, they have been trading since 2014 so maybe you just caught someone without full knowledge of the latest specifications! I'm certain your controller is good as I've seen several other reviews and they state the same throttle limit of 20mph.
      Good luck in sorting this out, please let me know how you get on with things. Rgds, John 👌🚵 👍

    Hi Phil, this was fun, sorry I'm late again! I'm going to help you out with the problem you had alrhough i expect you know by now.
    I have an ebike with five pedal assist modes but no throttle as they're not allowed in the uk unless you get a license plate and tax it and goodness knows what else.
    Anyway i believe the point you missed was that those five modes are for "pedal" assist. So ignore the throttle, put it in mode one and pedal, you'll find you have a light assistance up to maybe 8 or 10 mph and you will use the least amount of power. As you go up through the levels you will notice when pedalling (crucially!) the amount of assistance you get and the maximum speed you can reach increases. This until the final level, was it 5 like mine? You'll get maximum assistance up to the top speed mentioned in the manual, i think there was one for throttle only and one for pedal assist. Your throttle is unrelated to the pedal assist mode because you have control over the speed and power level in your grip-twist.
    Hope this helps if you havent found out by now. Great review chaps, enjoy your e-biking, I'm hoping for good weather to coincide with good health this year so I can get out more. 👍👏

      Thank you, Jude, for your great description! 😊 Here, where we can have a throttle, it should work this way. Without any peddling, PA 1 should be (for instance, they are not all the same) 10 mph, then 2 should be 12 mph, 3 15 mph, and so on up to 20 mph in 5. That's how my other ebikes work. I didn't try, but I suspect that if I was just pedaling and shifted from 1-5 that there would be no difference. I've contact them, showed them a video of the problem and they are sending me a new speed controller to fix the issue. I'll update in another video.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop ah bless you Phil. The nearest my bike has to a throttle is "Walk Assist" which is button you can hold down so the motor carries you to four mph. Our laws say that a bicycle is a "motor scooter" if it has a motor which will make it go faster than a pedal cycle and that is deemed to be just over 15mph I believe. So e-bikes are only allowed to have 250W motor and speed is restricted to 15mph. Older or slightly less able bodied people like me find the Walk Assist mode useful to get up to speed before pedalling. Then as long as you rotate the pedals, no effort required you can get along at a good speed but the motor stops at it's assigned speed at each power level, after that the power is all you!
      Thanks for link anyway, it's very kind of you... I'm too unstable to be allowed to go any faster anyway! 😂

    There is often, a change in the display setting to enable a bit faster speed. You will need to talk to the company tech support to find the sequence of pushing buttons to access the change mode to override the factory setting of 20mph. The factory setting at 20mph is to legalize it as a Class2 ebike. For this type of bike, the faster setting speed is likely about 28mph.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop - The meaning of Pedal assist is how much the controller enable current flow into the motor to help you pedaling... number1 assist means least assist and less velocity... number5 assist means the max amount of assist and faster velocity until the programmed max.
      Torque sensors are pretty smart. They can tell how much effort you're putting into pedaling and adjust the motor's help accordingly. Ebikes with torque sensors are often more expensive due to the advanced technology involved.
      Cadence sensors provide uniform assistance, which can be ideal for those seeking a consistent riding experience without fluctuating effort. Generally, cadence sensors are more budget-friendly .
