Monica was an unstoppable force. 1st tournament back after missing 10 straight slam tournaments and all other play as well. Victory right away. Amazing. Remember, as well, how she went on to bagel Steffi Graf, the eventual champion, in the second set of the US Open final she got to in her very next event. I'm convinced it was her fear of being murdered by some other lunatic fan if she were to come back and start beating Steffi again that prevented her from ever returning to her formerly near unbeatable self. In the US final she played sloppy in the latter stages of the first set and lost. She took out her frustrations over that on her hapless opponent in the second set. Steffi surrendered damn few 0-6 sets during her career in total, and far fewer still in slam finals. I believe upon accomplishing that spectacular feat it occurred to Monica that if she were to defeat Steffi in another slam tournament, the next attempt on her life wouldn't fail, and her death might actually result. I watched the fire go out of her resolve in that third set she ultimately lost. She beat the same opponent she faces here in her only other slam championship match victory, and was never quite the same again after that. I often wonder what she might have gone on to accomplish if her career hadn't been so savagely mauled on that spring day in 93. It's sad we'll never know.
One of the greatest comebacks in ANY sport!
Thanks SO much!!
