  • Anke plays her last USO and last major tournament, losing to Dementieva for the second straight year. Not a great match but the commentary makes me feel very nostalgic, and it's nice to hear how much promise Elena showed as a teenager.

@@chriscze6153 what a great memory bro! Yeah I just love the forehand still, I love this outfit on her, maybe the most of any ever. Just bringing back my young teen memories

Huber's forehand was 'unique' let's put it that way. She was a rather underrated top player back in the day, always in the shadow of Graf ofc but she had a great career by anyone's standards. Bizarre that she was seen as being put out to pasture and on the brink of retirement here but tennis longevity was so different back then.

I always felt like Huber had some decent results left in her. She was only 27 when she called it quits. After that German tennis took a nosedive. Weingartener and Barna really never really took off. ALG showed promise for two years, but it took a whole decade for another crop of top German players to emerge. Nice to see her as tournament director at Stuttgart though. Also cool to see Elena hitting all the spots of the service box before her real serving woes began.

Thing were really different back then. Even 20 years ago it wasn't really normal to stick around after 25/26...I'm glad things have changed, tennis is nowhere near as ageist as it used to be. If you like Huber then after the USO is over I will also upload the 01 Paris indoors highlights.

@@chriscze6153 Absolutely. Especially when you consider a lot of the great players of the 90s/early 2000's turned pro so early and were having big results before they were 18. To play another ten years was a gruelling prospect.

Is this Huber the double specialist?

These two commentators have always been secretly rooting for Elena through the years lol. Not sure who they are. They were also calling Elena’s gold medal match for Eurosport. Chris and Sam?

Jo Durie and Chris Bradnam were her biggest fans for sure. Sam Smith liked her too, as you can hear from this video.

Elena, the real Russian tennis beauty, not Kournikova.
