Wait, is the announcer the identical twin brother of Thomas Dolby?! ;D
mikesgigtv 3:10 meesterplan is Dutch voor "Masterplan" just for the people wondering 😃
The BBC scientist Magnus Pyke. Well Magnus had been on the radio but at the time Thomas' refers to he was most famous for being on "Don't Ask Me" which was made by Yorkshire Television an ITV company.
@Ataraxia grimalkin studio I used to love this song back in the day ! 😅
Dolby is a beast. The Einstein of synth pop.
That was about the most entertaining award speech I have ever heard.
Chukkzy amen.
Right?
Absolutely blinding!
for sure
Genius. He seems to be a regular guy Thank you Thomas.
What a genius. I could listen to people like him talk all day about creating music.
Thomas Dolby is not only talented, but extremely friendly and down to earth, back in 1987 he came to my audio engineering school, The College for Recording Arts in San Francisco, Ca. and gave a lecture on electronic music. I remember asking him questions and chatting with him, he was so non-pretentious I was amazed!
Really, I can just FEEL that on his video and this story. Great mind, Great Artist, great Person. a winning combo.
@@starmon2
Wow.. does he have other songs? I can't remember. Only this one
@@Designer_TopG Famously, he’s had people point out to him that he only had one hit song, to which he’s replied “Well, that’s one more than you, isn’t it?”
@@Designer_TopG one of our submarines is great too. Great story with current updates.
@@Designer_TopG The album that this song comes from, The Golden Age Of Wireless,... this whole album is good from start to finish!!
I'm glad he doesnt' shy away from a song that became his hit of the ages. Too many bands think they are better than the music they create and shun their pop hits instead of letting them define them.
I'm in tears listening to this, love this. It takes me back to Thomas Dolby live at the Birmingham Odeon 1984, such great memories.
Holy shit watching a 80s pop star navigate that modern setup really is a testament to Dolby's love of electronic music. I wouldn't mind going to a live show.
The man knows his way around gear. He played a venue In NYC where I was a house sound engineer. An enormously talented and very smart guy who wears it lightly. Played a lot of The Golden Age of Wireless. Solo, very much like this. Really great.
OMG, are you serious man? That 'modern setup' is a cakewalk for someone like Dolby! Everything got a hell of a lot easier back then when we could afford things like Mac's and MOTU Performer software, but before that, it was all tape recorders and CV gate stuff. It was all a real PITA. By comparison, it is VERY easy to make and play music nowadays.
What a brilliant f*cking guy. He played the keyboard for Bowie in 1985 at the Live Aid concert. Queen played just before them. And to think Dolby found his first synth in the garbage just, what, 7 years prior? Just plain brilliant.
I watched it. That concert was one of the biggest music events of my time. I am 50 for 1 more month, I was a teen when this happened. I gotta go watch Bowie now and check out Dolby. Thx.
He was basically doing session work with trevor horn , robin scott albums before he had the breakthrough
Bowie introduced him as " the very brilliant Thomas Dolby". I'll never forget. quite right too.
Hell yeah!
Stood right next to him up front at the Thompson Twins concert March I think it was 1984 won't tell you what little city
“Aliens ate my Buick” is a great album! I invited Thomas in the early 1990’s to come to Lisbon for a small conf about internet music and he very kindly came over and was very friendly and down to earth. A very generous human being ❤
this guy is a real scientist.

What's amazing how these early synth pioneers could make such lovely sounds back in the 80 with their relatively primitive machines. Nowadays all those can be done on a computer including voice shaping (ADSR), composition, editing, sequencing, and production.
@@mikesgigtv Is this on RUclips now? Also, thanks for posting these! I bought his first LP when I was 13 in 1982 and have played it a million times. This honor was well-deserved. 😎
Dolby's doppelganger welcomes Thomas Dolby.
Dolby and Eddie Van Halen have been friends for years. Imagine being in the studio with those two genius musicians?
Sadly, no longer. RIP Eddie Van Halen (1955-2020).
Little known fact...he is the developer that created the software that lets us have different ringtones on our phones.
Wow no shit!!
And in particular he was responsible for the THE most famous ring tone of all time - the Nokia ring tone. Nokia was a client of his ring tone company, Beatnik. The guy is a legend.
And he also made the beep sounds for the Nokia game "Snake".... nah just kidding. xD
Really ? if yes, he is a scientist !
Nokia tune is fron a 1902 song called "Grand Valse"
This guy is 100% talent , from the tips of his toes...right thru his huge brain.
His sounds are still heard today, his voice is still great...what an amazing man!
Roland Announces “Thomas Dolby Live in Roland Cloud” Thursday, July 26, at 4:00 P.M. PDT facebook.com/events/1769870769761840/
He's a true "sound scientist". :)
@@BillAnt He deafened me with science! 😕
Yes, he's a genius...and also VERY knowledgeable about sound and musical production - evidenced by his flawless work together with Prefab Sprout, where he had lots of ideas and a great deal of prior experience but took care not to let them smother the equally great talents of Paddy McAloon and the band.
Btw I used to think Magnus Pyke had been a friend of his father (who was a famous professor of Classics at London, Oxford and Cambridge, while Pyke. a chemist by trade, was well-known as a champion of science and higher education) so that he had known the man through his family, but maybe not...Anyway, Pyke performed his role in the song and especially the video with gusto! 😃
Following the explosion of "She Blinded Me With Science" (I was 15 y.o.) I became a fan of Thomas Dolby forever. Loved all of his material.
Always admired this guy’s talent but never knew what an engaging personality and sense of humor he has! And SBMWS remains in a class by itself almost 40 years after its release. Anyone who was of age in 1983 will know exactly what you’re referring to if you just randomly yell “Science!” - as I, admittedly, still do waaaaay too often.
Most fitting right now - untold millions were "blinded by science" and muzzled by corporate "science".
@@Cyallaire Well said!
As I occasionally do as well, I still have my VERY well played cassette from all those years ago. SCIENCE! : D
@@Cyallaire cheap.
@@insolentstickleback3266 I still have my vinyl LP. I was so disappointed when I bought the CD and there were weird mixes of some songs that were not like my album that I had memorized! Darn you, Capitol Records!
Love how Thomas takes us on a joyful, musical, ride back to the 80's with this classic radio and club hit.
I'm only four years behind on this video. In any case, I'm a big fan of Dolby. Total genius.
The usual irony: a composer's most tossed-off bit of fluff is the one thing he's most known for. And yet, he still makes it fun -- for us, and maybe himself, despite his anxiety about performing. Nice to see him recognized by Roland, and we even get a a tantalizing snippet of an early unreleased piece.
Hard to believe this song is now 40 years old. It was so far ahead of it's time whe it came out. Nothin was like it. Dolby is such a creative force. Its fun to watch him break down the specific elemdnts of this song. So much going on in it.
Thomas is so much more than just that one tune. Brilliant and criminally underrated.
Thomas Dolby is among the greatest scientists of our time.
I always get choked up when I hear ' When she's standing close to me ( bliiindiing me with scieeence!)". I still have no clue why, but I'm not complaining. It's just beautiful.
Thomas Dolby produced _Steve McQueen_ which is one of the best pop albums not only of the 80s, but also of the 20th century, and also of all time. Seriously underrated musician and producer.
Absolute poetry in motion!!
If anyone deserves it Thomas Dolby does. One of the original and best tech wizards. A genius
Not often you hear Moore's Law mentioned in an Entertainment Acceptance Speech.
Brilliant and Well deserved.
@@doneyarts47 ummm no…
1987 or 88 he played a gig at a place called Parkers here in Seattle. A band I roadied for opened up for him so my job was to do anything the band needed to have a good show - including going TD’s dressing room and thanking him for the huge opportunity. I knocked and popped my head in and he was warming up on some keyboards playing this while a smoking hot ‘assistant’ gave him a shoulder rub. He smiled and said ‘you’re very welcome, just let me know your names so i can thank you all.’ When we finished our set and cleared off, he came up and thanked us all and got the crowed to applaud. Very cool guy. Musical genius.
Happy 62th birthday Mr. Dolby! You inspired me so much to buy the many synthesizers I still own today. Thank you!!!
What a true innovator and classic musician!! Bravo sir,Bravo ..
Thomas Dolby = Legend
Apparently when my friend was a small child he used to have real trouble with anxiety, and that in turn effected his sleep. His parents tried everything to get the poor little dude to rest, but they had such a hard time with it. Eventually they figured out that he could peacefully fall and stay asleep if they played “she blinded me with science” on repeat for him which he also eventually began to refer to as “the hammer song”.
Anxiety? It sounds more like autism or asperger. But I could be wrong.
Brad Bebee So funny. I could see how this song would be very intriguing for a child.
"affected"
It’s impossible to feel anxiety while listening to this song. It’s just pure joy ❤️ thanks to Thomas Dolby lovely artist
It must be nice being introduced by your stunt double...
Roland Announces “Thomas Dolby Live in Roland Cloud” Thursday, July 26, at 4:00 P.M. PDT facebook.com/events/1769870769761840/
his stunt double looks just like his touring guitar player too , believe it or not
Wait, is the announcer the identical twin brother of Thomas Dolby?! ;D
This is a fantastic comment
I thought I was the only one to notice 😂😂😂
This is officially the most badass, awesome video on RUclips!
Ryan MovingViolationz agreed!
I remember we used to think THIS WAS THE music of The Future with synthesizers and unusual sounds. Still sounds great. Im a Class of 84 grad. An MTV Hit .
This guy is cool on another level
oh yeah!!
I liked Thomas Dolby in the 80s... After seeing this, bloody love him, top man!
BEYOND BRILLIANT!!
Way ahead of his time .... !!!
He paved the way for so many .
What a total delight! Great background story and then it morphed into a 'live' performance! Just the best!
I could watch this a gazillion times. It brings me back to my early 20s when I had been plucked from an almost certain death on skidrow to a way of life unknown to me.
As someone who came of age in the 80's this was so was a classic but hearing the back story to how he created it was fantastic. Thanks so much Thomas.
I met Thomas and the band after a show SF, Warfield Theater 84/85. He was so friendly and down to earth, easy to talk to, genuine. Lots of love, Thomas!!
Thomas Dolby was a huge musical crush as a high school sophomore Valley Girl. Was terribly excited to see him in concert @ The Greek Theater or Universal Amphitheater in LA. I believe it was. I think I still have a concert tee. Intelligent, vastly creative and unafraid to make music that no one else was creating. Great to see him here and now. ♡
Wow, what a great artist. Brilliant song that still sounds good all these years later. Godspeed to you Mr. Thomas Dolby!!
I love Thomas Dolby. Those first three solo albums still hold up some 30 years later.
I never get tired of this...
What an AWESOME song. I LOVE how Dolby shows the way this song was put 2gether. See, little steps can make BIG HITS!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I had the pleasure to see Thomas Dolby in concert in a very small venue in Washington DC called the Warner Theater in 1984. That was hands down one on the best concerts I ever went to (& I have been to many, many). He electrified the place with creative energy!
Thanks Mr. Dolby. Great memories!
I was able to see him around this same time in concert at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. Also a small venue. Agreed, he delivered one hell of a show.
He aged really well.
Because SCIENCE!
@@LesserMoffHootkins 🤣
He was very handsome in his younger years.
I remember hearing Thomas Dolby for the first time and thinking recorded sound had just gone up a level.Maybe ten levels.
Dolby is a legend. The production on Aliens Ate My Buick is just something else. I really enjoyed this story and of course the incorporation of Magnus Pike, that iconic voice.
Awesome ! One of my favorite tunes from the big 80s. One guy and keyboards doing the whole song . Wow.
Roland Announces “Thomas Dolby Live in Roland Cloud” Thursday, July 26, at 4:00 P.M. PDT facebook.com/events/1769870769761840/
Blinded me with science. Hit the urban airwaves with a vengeance. Skating rinks was packed ; cars rolling through the neighborhood banging it. Thankyou sir for a classic .
Yeah
I always loved Thomas Dolby, and his use of synths, and sense of musical experimentation. He was also on the cutting edge of sampling back in the day, and had some great sampled bass sounds. His set up here reminds me of when I had a similar set up in my basement in the early 80's. I would sit there for hours with my keyboards, Linn Drum, and tape recorder, composing pop songs, and recording tracks. These days, I have come full circle back to my original first love, classical music! ... Peace! 🎼❤☮
I remember when I first heard this song, back in 1982. It was one of those songs that made you know instantly that you had to find everything the artist had ever done and listen to that too. Fortunately, I worked in a record shop at the time!
It appears time has been very nice to Mr. Dolby! WOW!!!
SO MUCH brilliance and creativity in the 80's, musically!
I totally agree! I've mentioned to a number of people in the past that the 80s was the s***. Most of the bands and musicians were on their A-game that Day & age, if not, you more than likely weren't in the game. I'm so thankful I grew up in the 80s!
Thomas Dolby also did keyboards on Def Leppard’s “Pyromania” album (as “Booker T Boffin”) and on Foreigner’s “4” album.
Awesome. Those two albums are on my "Stuck on a Desert Island" top 10.
Exactly. Those albums wouldn't have been the same without him.
His synth intro on "Waiting For a Girl Like You" is perfection!
“I love you , goodbye “ is in my opinion an amazing piece of work that makes you feel like you’re in Cajun land
The whole album is one of my favorites, "that's why" has some cracking lyrics and just a great groove.
"Eastern Bloc" is great update to "Pirate Twins" post the fall of the wall and then he went on to perform in Roger Water's live version of "The Wall" shot at The wall featuring as the school teacher that was slightly reminiscent of Magnus Pike
@@chrisd4987 thanks for that info , and ditto A&H is an outstanding album , even the spookier tracks grow on you
Dated only by his choice of motor...Nissan surely. 'Beauty of Dream' has some of the most fantastic lyrics ever. Check that out.
I LOVE that song with a Deep passion.
I am totally blown away... So happy to see this, thank you... Heard this song and Hyperactive on the radio as a kid, then a friend gave me a tape of Aliens ate my Buick, bought the CD when I was older then tracked down a Vinyl sealed copy 10 years ago... To this day one of my favorite artists, I'm a musician myself and as a bass player Thomas Dolby always paid close attention to the bass... Kudos to a fantastic composer, performer and singer. Can't get over how good his voice is. Does he ever perform live ? What a legend !

I don't know about recently but I did see him perform in New York in the 1980s at The Ritz. The DJ used to play Europa on their sound system. Mind bending!
Aliens is still my fav of his. What a killer production. Ability to Swing !
I. could. not. stop. listening. to. Hyperactive.
I was blinded by Thomas Dolby's brilliance in 1981 when I first heard "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and was hooked! Been a fan ever since. I was in California then and was turning everyone I knew in the 1980s on to TD. His impressive body of work and musical poetry is amazingly awesome!
One day, "The Golden Age of Wireless" will be recognized as one of the most important works of Electronic Music, side by side with Kraftwerk!
Aliens ate my buick was the better album though , i also think howard jones certainly
nicked the one man synth act from mr dolby without having the wit and programming talent that thomas has
Absolutely!!!
So you're just gonna ignore Neu! and Tangerine Dream...
This was such a fun song to play. I was the bass player in a band in the early 80's. I pickup up a Roland SH-101 and had a great time playing the bass line on this song.
I got to see him open for BT at a small venue in Norfolk, VA. The NorVA. Would’ve been 2006 or 2007. He came out in this steampunk duster that practically touched the floor, and wordlessly started hit set, building a song one loop at a time as brilliantly as only he can. I’ve never forgotten that. I’d never seen or heard anything like it before.
That must have been amazing !
Saw BT myself in Ft. Lauderdale club…it was great.
Such an underrated artist, his first album is a MASTERPIECE
That was awesome, Mr. Dolby. Well deserved award. 👍🏻
A living, breathing sequencer. And historian. Love the man and his work.
I find it so exciting (as with many musicians) that he is the only one in the world who could have come up with this. Absolutely love the song it's so unique
What treat to get the story behind the song. To this day it's one of my favs.
Science!
i wish he did even more songs here, but even in 2018 he's still got it. after all these years, still great.
Saw him in concert in the early 80s in Boulder, CO. Felt comfy around the scientists at a time I didn't dare attend a Depeche Mode concert.
Pure 80s! What a decade!😎
Always a fan. He is a genuis
This whole video brings a smile to my face. I love this guy!
What a great, humble talented fella he is !
Left out the "GOOD HEAVENS MISS SACAMOTO! YOUR BEAUTIFUL!!", but still cool as hell!!
Good ear👍🏻👍🏻
Mike McQuaide I forgot about that! Probably cause it would be considered racist today. Lol
Sakamoto, though. Damn I always thought it was Yakamoto. thanks googl.
So much fun to hear his story and watch the performance.
Standing ovation from Los Angeles!
He's still got it !!!
This song is on my all time great playlist. Among the GREATS.
Truly wonderful, this and hyperactive are proper 80’s sounds.

Absolutely a genius, and remains one of my all time favourite artists.
A definite pop masterpiece of the 80’s, and given the quality of that decade, that is saying a lot. What a cool dude, too!
It's amazing how Universal his experiences especially when it comes to experimental stuff.
This is gold! Thanks. I used to wait an hour every day to see this on MTV when I was a kiddo.
Dolby and Howard Jones on a project. Earthshatering!
One of the most creative songs (and videos) of the 80's, and that's saying something.
What A Ride Back In Time! Thomas Dolby Still Rocks!
LOL is no one else fascinated by the fact that the announcer guy and thomas dolby look EXACTLY THE SAME IN THIS VIDEO?!!!
it's amazing to see how well preserve his voice and vocal technique is!
ive heard him tell this story multiple times and it never gets old
Happy 60th Birthday Thomas Dolby
Absolutely, superb gentleman.........
I was a senior in high school when this song came out and I played the shit out of this tune
Nice seeing him do this video! Very humble. Loved this song.
With DOLBY in his name, what do you expect? Mastery!
One synt pop jam quintessential to the genre Thank you Thomas for this 80s iconic song
Been listening to The Golden Age of Wireless since its release. Now the grand children are hooked. Thomas Dolby is awesome, thank you for the 80's and beyond.
