  • How far can a Classic Mini actually go over snow and mud if need be? Picking things up from the last episode , test driving the car was all that was left to evaluate the effectiveness of my winter cooling set up. While at it I decided to cease the opportunity of snow in Greece and so I set out to try and fit my snow chains for the first time ever on my classic mini. Having survived the first step Ι figured I could take it a step further and assess the Mini's capabilities over mud as well...That's were the fun really began! :-)

    I love how in 2:00 you decide to be scottish for a bit.
    Also who's that cute pupper? Give it lots of hugs!

      Well to be honest with you, there definitely is just ah wee bit of scottish accent left in me. Studying and living in Edinburgh for five years have left their permanent mark on both my accent from time to time and definitely in my heart. The doggy is a random sheperd that was drawn to Bob the moment i pulled over. Sweetest, cutest and kindest pup ever!!! He became the shining star of the shooting! Actually I will give it some hugs as Imi planning to go back, find him and feed him cause the half sandwich i had saved for lunch was obliterated in miliseconds by muddy paws. :-)

    Greetings adventurus fellow mini maniac. On overheating during the summer if you have a 998cc engine it will never overheat, the block is indestructible! It was a good thing that you installed the additional fan and reserved the mechanical in case of emergency. As for the chains, these are not for long trips or prolonged use. My suggestion would be to buy a set of mud and snow tires or because there are not any available for 10" wheels get Colway tires or something like that which are proven in rallies, I.e. RAC. Might be something on the expensive side but if you are planning to visit countries close to the Arctic your chains are useless. People there don' t use chains. Of course Colway will be extremely useful for bad roads in Russia or Ucraine. I would omit those countries because they are dangerous for travelling alone unless you have friends with minis who you can trust. Keep the videos coming. I like the sincerity and straightforward thinking.

      Demetris you are absolutely correct in saying that chains are not for prolonged use. They batter the living crap out of both tyres and suspension and they are only meant for taking you out of harms way if the situation call for it. That is how i intend on using them ( and that was the whole point of the test drive). They are compact in size and take up minimal space which is a descent factor to concider given the both the size and available space on a classic mini plus the fact that i need to be self sufficient in terms of basic parts and accessories along the way. I m still contemplating the choice of two extra mud tyres but then again the extra rail on top of the car to store them plus the increased risk of theft makes me think twice of this solution but yes you are right. In an ideal scenario proper mud tyres shoud be used for prolonged distances over mud but that will fall under the African series of episodes when the time is right! :-)
      As for the overheating durability of the 998 block I couldn't agree more with you. They are almost indestructible and their durability combined to their versatility is what kept from not switching to a 1275 block all these years. I love my engine. All 998cc of it!

    Another great video. I must admit I busted out laughing when you decided to go again. I can see the contemplation in your eyes as you are working the decision out. That was awesome! Indeed, Bob is a Monster! :-) I almost feel like you could write a series of children's books based on your adventures. :-)

      I m pretty sure they did but there is no harm in trying and testing as much as possible prior to setting out on the trip. Back in 1965 the cars were just 6 years old....today....well..almost half a century of use is bearing on their shoulders so making sure things won't fall apart half way through Moldavia will at least set my mind at ease! :-)

    Waterways need flushing plus thermostat

    • @TheMiniDiaries
      @TheMiniDiaries  3 года назад +1

      Hey Alan. Waterways have been flushed twice so no issues there. What do you mean by saying plus thermostat? add a higher temp one for example?

    • @JustAlanJohn
      @JustAlanJohn 3 года назад

      @@TheMiniDiaries Make sure the thermostat is a good one you can check it easy removing it and putting it in warm/hot water. The Rad is another one to look out for if the car has had just water. This creates a lot of rust deposits around the water ways. And check the Driveshaft rubber donuts. All the best
