#15 Mykonos Off The Beaten Track
Просмотров 6152 года назад
Mykonos was on my "To Do" list for quite sometime now. Out of all the driving tests I've been carrying out with Bob I forgot to check whether he gets sea sick or not. I therefore decided to get him on a ship all the way to Mykonos and spend a few days exploring the unique island of the Cyclades in a more or less off the beaten track fashion. Hop on and enjoy the ride. Guest Star: Citroen 2CN Sp...
#14 . SU HS4 Carburettor Part 2. The Two Pennies Trick
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.2 года назад
SU HS4 carburettors may be brilliantly designed devices but they do suffer from issues here and there. I bumped into the Two Pennies Trick in a forum for classic cars in my desperate efforts to try and resolve the idling issues on my car. I would hate to run into problems while travelling in a foreign country ( let alone the shame of restarting the car at each traffic light) so I started lookin...
#13. SU HS4 Carburettor Part 1. How to get rid of Air Leaks on the Shaft!
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.2 года назад
Brilliant designs as they may be, SU carburettors do come with their own sets of problems. On an SU HS4, airleaks on the butterfly shaft can be a serious problem when it comes to loosing idling and messing up emissions and a lot of us end up chasing gremlins in our carburettors trying to figure out the issue. In this video I present a very simple, and super cheap fix in managing air leaks on th...
#12. Classic Mini Auxiliary Cooling. Keeping it cool during summer time!
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
Overheating in the super hot Greek summers places a challenge not just on a Classic Mini but on any car for that matter! In trying to increase the cooling capacity of Bob so as to be able to handle temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Centigrade (104 F), for which it was definitely not designed for, I came up with a very simple yet quite effective way of making sure I won't be frying eggs on my...
#11. Classic Mini Road Trip Across Greece Part 2
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 года назад
Classic minis and road trips are a great combination contrary to common belief! When locals saw me driving around in my Classic Mini, going up and down mountains and climbing cliffs, advised me NOT to navigate certain routes. Bob proved out to be a worthy oponent to the interesting terrain I had to drive through and I ended up in places that made my jaws drop! Running a test trip proved invalua...
#10. Classic Mini Road Trip Across Greece. Part 1
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 года назад
What would a road trip with a classic mini actually be like? Since I couldn't answer that question to myself either I figured, I'd run a test trip across Greece for three weeks trying to simulate the conditions I would most likely be up agaist once on the road exploring the world. There were many a challenge along the road and I quickly realised that practise from theory are a long way apart! N...
#9. Classic MIni Upper Engine Steady upgrade. Test driving by visiting The Stonehenge Of Greece.

Upper engine steady on my mini was totally toast, one time too many in the years I've owend the car. Fed up with the quality of the std part and not willing to wait a month or so for a better quality poly version of the part to arrive from the UK I decided to look for an alternative to solve the problem once and for all (hopefully). Its carburetor cleaner spray. will reveal leaks as its combustible and the moment it gets sucked in it will alter the idle speed. Be aware its extremely flamable so make sure you do not spray it on a super hot exhaust manifold or you will need a fire extinguisher to spray on the resulting fire too! I recon that won;t be much fun!

      Quite honestly I can't picture myself without a classic mini either and recent announcements about banning petrol powered cars in the next decade or so spooks me out! Can you imagine being forced to drive a dorky car which makes no noise, doesn't leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason and has no soul in it? It is a small but very powerful car as an engine. Agile and snappy. As external and internal dimensions, it is very reminiscent of the old Fiat 500, even if this was much less powerful. It is certainly not a car for tall people, but it is a lot of fun to drive. In Italy, there were many in circulation, until a few years ago. Now, these Minis are meant for a circle of historic car enthusiasts. Steering wheel, gear lever, pedals: they are certainly not soft and indeed it requires a certain physical effort, but on the other hand, at the time in which it was built, like all cars of that era, there were no brake boosters and similar stuff. For those with a large foot size, it is almost mandatory to drive barefoot: but perhaps this is one of the pleasures of driving. In this way, there is a greater feeling with the car. Do you usually drive with shoes, or do you prefer to drive barefoot?

    • @TheMiniDiaries
      @TheMiniDiaries 2 года назад

      Hey Fred!! i do indeed drive barefoot especially dring spring, summer and autumn time of the year. It does give you the feeling of being more connected to the car while driving but then again I enjoy walking barefoot in general. Pedals and controls ( excluding the steering wheel) are actually quite soft for a car of its era. The hydraulic clutch is descent in its feel an so are brakes and gear lever. Its definitely a fun factory driving the mini and truth be told old tiny Fiats are a joy as well. I have never had the pleasure of driving a 500, but my brother used to own a Zastava 750M which was the same a Fat 600 I believe and it was sushc a joy to drive! What kind of car do you own?

    • @ilfred6857
      @ilfred6857 3 месяца назад

      @@TheMiniDiaries I'm sorry but I only just read your reply. First of all, just like you, I drive barefoot from spring to autumn. Sometimes even in winter, but in this case I drive with socks, not totally barefoot. And for me too, it's the best feeling to really be in touch with the car. And like you, I like walking barefoot, which I often do, as well as driving barefoot. In the past, many years ago, we had a Fiat Topolino, model C, from around 1953. I have had several Alfa Romeos (Alfetta/ Alfa 75/ Alfa 145). I currently own a Fiat Panda L, small in size but very comfortable.

      @@TheMiniDiaries @The MINI Vlog test drove one today. Was super exciting! Is it normal that it requires such force on the brake pedal?? That part surprised me a bit...

    • @TheMiniDiaries
      @TheMiniDiaries 2 года назад

      @@dauwg99 to be honest "normal" for cars from that era can vary a bit!! For my case where my set up is without a servo assist unit it all depends on the set up of the car. When I had front drum brakes, stopping the car was an ordeal to say the least and pressure on the brake pedal had to be substantial yet thoughtfully applied if i didn't want to end up in a ditch somewhere. A single line brake pump further conytributed to that. When I switched to disc brakes with a dual brake pump the braking performance improved dramatically. Stopping distance was reduced siginficantly, braking response was spot on and the required pressure on the pedal was a lot less. In all honesty the braking system of a classic mini with front disc brakes works extremely well and efficiently provided everything is properly set up and maintained. Adding a servo assist unit will surely reduce the amount of force required on the pedal for sure!

      In all honesty there is a certain charm to planning a round the world trip in such a tiny old car! In having said that I m giving my self ample time to test all terrains the car can actually handle and identify any "loose" strings i need to tighten up so as to minimise misshaps along the way. I m pretty sure stuff will happen along the way but it's better to play safe now than feel sorry later! I m really happy you enjoy the content!! Thanks for a great video, I really enjoyed the areal footage. I have to say I totally agree with you about driving modern cars, it can be a really soulless experience. I have just sold my Mercedes A180 in order to buy a thirty four year old Mini Cooper S. It's the best ride you can own.

    • @TheMiniDiaries

      I couldnt agree more with you! Its such a rare experience driving a car like a classic mini. I feel quite privilleged by the fact that I actually own a car that makes all the " i wish i had a Porsche or a Ferrari" kind of thoughts non existent in my mind. There are only three other cars out there that I can think of that are as unique and fun to drive despite their humble, down to earth roots. The Citroen 2CV, the Citroen DS (ok not so humble this one) and the Fiat 600. Besides, no technology gadgets and full extra loaded modern car can put a smile on someones face while downshifting from 3rd to 2nd on a tight bend down a beautiful country side road like a classic mini does. Hand cranked window down, a breeze on your face and the muffler echoing through the narrows as if you are the king of the world. Selling yor A180 for a classic mini is a great choice i believe!! All you need now for it, is a name and Bob's you uncle! ;-)

    Excellent story UNTIL you grabbed the hammer! I was thinking to myself, "Run, Bob...RUN!!!" That was funny. What coolant did you use? It looks like the same color for windshield wiper cleaner fluid that we use in the US.

    • @TheMiniDiaries
      @TheMiniDiaries 2 года назад

      Well, being an engineer I can tell you that despite our progress as a species on earth, some archegonal tools like the hammer do tend to resolve issues in a surprisingly fast and efficient way!! :-) I use standard ethyl glycol antifreeze in Bob and he seems quite content so far with it! To be honest as windhsield wiper washer fluid i use a concoction of rubbing alcohol and water which has great cleaning and antistatic effects while being cheap as heck at the same time.

      @@TheMiniDiaries Hey! I live in Northern Virginia in the United States. Where I live is about 32 kilometers south of Washington DC. I watched your video where you rebuild Bob's carburetor with some coins, very cool! I remember when I was young my fuel pump died on me. I knew nothing about fuel pumps and cell phones NOR the internet existed back then. So I sat in my car, took the fuel pump completely apart, cleaned up the points (I assumed that is what was wrong), Put it back together and it worked! Your video reminded me of that

    Would a normal HS4 jet ie one without waxstat fit your carburetor? Had many Mini's and only briefly seen a SU with waxstat so dont remember driving with done.

    • @TheMiniDiaries
      @TheMiniDiaries 2 года назад

      Hey Vinko!! Well all HS4 carbs were "normal" so to speak! The early HS4 type didnt have the waxstat over the jet. The waxstat was retrofited after a few years ( dont know the year exactly). To answer your question a"normal" jet would actually fit on my carburator but the choke linkage would not be compatible right off the bat. In having said that I'm pretty sure one can convert the linkage on a waxtstat jet to fit the needs of a "normal" jet. Good point though!

    • @thatdudeinorange2297
      @thatdudeinorange2297 2 года назад

      Think they came round in 1976 here due to emission rules. So about the same year as your Mini. As the spring biased needle thats on the HS 4 wears out the jet one might as well 'forget' to put a new waxstat jet in, in they even are sold these days? If I were you then a spare complete carb even if its a bit worn might be good having with you for your long trip you will be going on. That and a bunch of other spares. Shock absorbers and a couple of rubber doughnuts for the suspension might also be good. Only driven a Mini for 1000 kilometers once as longest, one way. So dont have that much experience. Except for the rubber doughnut it mostly went fine.
