Secomak CS2 Air Raid Siren

  • A video testing my newly-purchased Secomak CS2 siren. A VERY rare siren, which I currently believe is the only CS2 in existence. (I thought the same with the Klaxon SS6 at the time of its purchase, and now look where we are!)
    According to the previous owner, it was employed at the Birmingham Battery and Metal Company's works in Selly Oak, where it was mounted on one of three chimneys on the site. While its exact use was unknown, it was likely used as a shift change siren while doubling up as a warning/air-raid siren for the town of Selly Oak. The siren was audible all across the town. It was removed in the 1980s when the factory closed, and was kept in a garage for much of the following three decades - ensuring it has remained in a very good condition despite its age.
    Secomak's GP2 siren was essentially a single-ended version of the dual-tone GP3, with some modifications to the junction box and mounting bracket/base based on the shape change. Manufacturer documentation suggests the siren output 123dB at 1m, and could reach 102dB at 100ft away. The only real difference between the GP2 and the CS2 recorded here is the addition of a 'coded shutter' to the end, which opens and closes to allow or restrict the flow of air into the rotor. This opening and closing has a damping effect on the sound produced, and allows for different signals to be 'broadcast' to the surrounding area.
    On 415v CS sirens (CS6/CS8/CS12 if one exists), the solenoid used to open the shutter is powered via a separate 240v supply, allowing for independent control, while on 240v sirens (CS2/CS3) the solenoid gets its power from the motor's power supply, so turning the siren 'on' opens the shutter, and turning it 'off' closes it again. This does limit the range of signals able to be created in comparison to the 3ph 415v sirens. However, while I could create a separate 240v supply for the shutter and then be able to create far more signals, this would spoil the originality of the siren and as such will not be happening.

      Not quite sure I’d say that 0:49 is escape or hi-lo because neither applies - it is simply a pulse.
      This siren is single-tone, so hi-lo is impossible, and it was used on a metalworks, so there was no concern whatsoever about escaped lunatics 😂

      The CS2 certainly is a rather unique siren - currently the only one out there to the best of my knowledge - and it's in great condition considering its history.
      One day I might do a shutter operation video for this like your one from Broadmoor - this one's far less complicated than a CS8 though!

    ith the intake damper, the coast is still pretty much quick. So a damping plate for what?

    • @al66class59
      @al66class59  9 месяцев назад

      To decrease the output volume of the siren on wind-down by vastly reducing its air intake, and hence its air output. Wind-down speed likely wasn't a concern, and due to the low armature mass/small bearings, it was always going to be fairly quick anyway.
      It would also allow it to produce different signals, but the shutter/damper is wired directly to the motor so there aren't many options.

      Decibel rating not sure, I tested this indoors and was multiple rooms away from the room in which I put the siren. So clearly loud enough to warrant me running away from it! I did have a document with the manufacturer's sound ratings at 1m but now cannot find it.
      In terms of size I'd say about 5-6kg and a foot long from end to end, shutter to motor. If it helps at all, the solenoid box is almost exactly the same size as an iPhone 8 in length/height (but obviously has a much higher depth)
