Carstairs SIREN G TEST! Carstairs Village's State Hospital Siren

  • The July 2019 test of the Carstairs Village Secomak CS8 siren (better known as Klaxon CS8s despite being a Secomak design), designated as Siren G by the mrmattandmrchay State Hospital siren hunt.
    On my tour of the sirens, I went around seeing them in a rather strange order, with the intention of seeing the Tesco Express in Carstairs after the test was complete (it passed at 13:26). We started in Lanark at Siren I before driving north all the way to Forth (siren A), continuing through Braehead (B) and Carnwath (C) before reaching Carstairs. We found D and then tried to see E unsuccessfully through the back of the hospital, via a fence near a meadow/common in the village, before continuing to this siren (G).
    This video was only possible because of some well-timed good fortune. It was filmed by my older Canon Legria HFR57 (which has filmed a large number of videos on this channel), which was left in the driveway of a very kind homeowner whilst my dad and I went off to film the Ravenstruther siren, H.
    After the test, the camera was safely collected and we headed to finish the tour at siren F (Carstairs Juncton/Station), where we bumped into mrmattandmrchay who'd decided to film that siren (more on that later!). A successful Tesco sighting later and we headed off back south.
    This video has been brought to you by al66class59.

      @@al66class59 Thank you! I've always loved the HI-LO sound of the CS8. If I ever got to choose a mechanical siren, it would be that. Though the chances of me getting one ever is about 0, so what I'll likely do in the far future is just get a 3T22 and have it rewound for 50hz, 3 phase, 2880RPM.

    I did my training at an asylum in Essex and every friday the siren tests would happen. Different notes/playback for fire, riot on ward or escaped patient, us in nurses quarters off duty also had to assemble at assigned point to lend a hand in those emergency situations but were allowed to ignore the friday tests. I loved working in asylums and was very good at my job too but of course most were built on prime land and property maggots just itching to get abysmal housing estates on all of 'em.

      Interesting! I suppose these sites probably have internal alarms for these scenarios, but some have external warning sirens too - like Carstairs.
      Closure of places similar to this has put unnecessary pressure on the remaining sites to deal with everyone who needs psychiatric care, but unfortunately that’s how the world works now. Everything is financially motivated and care quality suffers as a result.

    What are the point of these sirens??? Is it a warning device???

    • @al66class59
      @al66class59  4 года назад +3

      Yep, so if someone escapes Carstairs hospital (it’s a high security psychiatric meaning the patients are dangerous) then the public get some early warning that they need to find somewhere safe.

    • @al66class59

      That’s likely because it’s got the same 10-12 port ratio as most other sirens here in Britain.
      Not just sirens but also any other loud sudden noises will scare birds :)

    In my youth in the US, every Wednesday at noon (or was it 1pm?) the city's air raid sirens would do a test. Never had such a system for loony bins here. Reagan disbanded them, realizing the republican party needed more voters, lol. Not sure when they stopped the air raid siren tests. There was a siren in my neighborhood that would sound to call the volunteer firefighters to the station, too.

      New Zealand is known for its fire sirens- there’s a couple here in the UK, and I heard of some in the states, but it’s cool that sirens like these can be used even when the larger networks are disbanded :)

      Probably not. These sirens would definitely not provide the adequate warning that big cities would need, and it’s controlled by the NHS- so I doubt that it would.
