- The appearance of German bombers in the skies over London during the afternoon of September 7, 1940 heralded a tactical shift in Hitler's attempt to subdue Great Britain. During the previous two months, the Luftwaffe had targeted RAF airfields and radar stations for destruction in preparation for the German invasion of the island.
With invasion plans put on hold and eventually scrapped, Hitler turned his attention to destroying London in an attempt to demoralize the population and force the British to come to terms. At around 4:00 PM on that September 7th day, 348 German bombers escorted by 617 fighters blasted London until 6:00 PM. Two hours later, guided by the fires set by the first assault, a second group of raiders commenced another attack that lasted until 4:30 the following morning.
This was the beginning of the Blitz - a period of intense bombing of London and other cities that continued until the following May. For the next consecutive 76 days, London was bombed either during the day or night. Fires consumed many portions of the city. Residents sought shelter wherever they could find it - many fleeing to the Underground stations that sheltered as many as 177,000 people during the night. In the worst single incident, 450 were killed when a bomb destroyed a school being used as an air raid shelter. Londoners and the world were introduced to a new weapon of terror and destruction in the arsenal of twentieth century warfare.
The Blitz ended on May 11, 1941 - after 247 nights of bombing - when Hitler called off the raids in order to move his bombers east in preparation for Germany's invasion of Russia.
I remember the sound of the sirens and the doodle bugs coming over. I was 4 and our house got bombed. My dad was seriously injured. I feel grateful every day that me and my family survived those horrific nights and proud to be British.
how sad
you were lucky survive
Ann Abbott Aw. Love you 1940 glad you’re back
Anne Abbott I can't imagine what it was like during the war. My grandparents didn't really talk about it except saying that night after night themselves and other Londoners grow more and more defiant. My great grandmother worked at the Woolwich Arsenal on night's. She told me that when the sirens sounded they just put on a tin helmet and carried on working. Outstanding and very brave generation.
My Granddad was about two years old living in Southampton in the country side over looking the city, as the bombings carried out my Granddads family were giving out food and shelter for those who needed it, You're lucky to survive.
The foundation stone which is called the Seat of satan has been laid by the Furher Hitler Himself in the 1930s.
I was eight yeas old in 1940 and this was my life then...
really. My nana was in WW2 Air raid and she surived
Anthony Newark wow must have been some pretty tough times.
Anthony Newark I can't even imagine how scary it was during ww2
Anthony Newark Are RUclips stil alive?
Aww bless
On the day of the London tube bombings (7/7) and the second attempted bombings two weeks later, I was evacuated from my home in 'shepherds Bush. I stood with thousands of others outside of the BBC HQ. That is as far as we could get near to Shepherds Bush.
I was interviewed in the street by a young French reporter outside the BBC. He was aghast at how there was no apparent fear or panic in the crowds and none in me. He said "If this was France, people would be running everywhere"
I told him "This is a city that was bombed for 5 years from the air. 57 nights and half those days too, for a period. My mother was there. How an earth are a handful of Terrorists with a few home made bombs going to scare a city of people that have endured that. What the hell do they think they can achieve here?!" The young reporter smiled broadly.
52 people were killed for nothing that day!
I was not allowed back to my poor starving cats for two days.
"... that deep wisdom given only to the very young, and the very old... Do you see any signs of fear on these faces?" wow that quote though.
The way they acted like nothing happened is amazing London is strong and hopefully all ways will be
UK = nation of brave & intelligent people with hearts full of human values.
Agree.
Absolutely incredible what those people had to endure and still carry on as if nothing had happened, the Londoner's,well all Brits will never lie down and give up. We must always show our respect to those brave people who fought for our Country.
Absolutely amazing footage
I love this American geezer waxing lyrical about us Londoners, so complimentary. My Mum was 13 years old when the Germans were bombing us. She lived in South Kensington and went to Jack Barclay's underground car park to shelter where my Grandad was a night watchman. Jack Barclay welcomed the local people in to potentially save their lives. However my Mum used to tell me that the French Lisse refused entry to the locals She was such a resilient person, nothing ever phased her. Londoners were tough in those days!
so proud to be British and from London.
I love learning about history I am British every time I hear the air raid siren I get chills the people never were fazed by the bombs we keep calm and carry on British stiff upper lip 🇬🇧👑💂👸💂
Every time I hear the siren I automatically think 'blitz' .
That was in 1940 -1945 six years of WW2
Okay.
we won
marie soper yes I get chills when I hear the sirens as well, yes us British have a lot of courage and I get annoyed when people hate us, we are a good strong nation
I am so proud of the people of Great Britain. I was born ten years after
D Day, in London.
Wow D-Day will be in June 6 2019 hate that day but proud of it
I absolutley loved this! These people were tough, thoughout those moments they stood strong, never showed fear and never took shit!
If these brave men and women can make it thru this, we can make it thru this covid 19 crap. This video gives me hope and makes me realize we dont have it so bad. What a great generation. We can learn a lot from them and this video.
My great grandma used to work in the factories creating British bombs to use in the war, a bomb fell and landed on her foot she was lucky it wasn’t armed or the whole place would of gone up!
My late father served in five major campaigns in the European theatre during WWII: D-Day, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge). I am so proud that he was a part of ridding the world of the Nazis.
...Bravo, kudos, and endless thanks to your Dad and all your family who supported his life’s efforts..:)
I hope the younger generation see this. I just can't believe how they want to just give our freedom away after all that the country fought for. The politicians are as bad.
Brave heros the people of 1940s thank you for giving us what we know
This video scared the compete shit out of me...
why no thumbs up? im the first to do this, i think this footage was brillant
That wa inspiring . It really made me think of how strong those people were and I have decided that I wish I were like them. I wish I had their bravery and willpower .
It's neat that you can look back at real military videos of ww2 and see what really happened 70 years ago
76 years ago
my parents lived through the blitz and the stories they shared with me were both amazing funny and most of all horrific ! no one could crush the british spirit not then not now !
Lord Keep Unity of Great Britain. Amen
Terrific piece of film.
That was an awesome video! I love it!
You would be suprised at how tough you are dear lady.
a band called Public service broadcasting have used this and other films for the war in their music. Try them.
2:30: The warning sounds
Me: yay the Air Raid is finally here. And also the warning never bothered me
i love germany but i also had this respects for british people..they had the courage to defend their countries and yeah..i am impressed that their royal did not fled to other country during the war..UNLIKE some of the royal around the world..earn me lots of respect! BUT ABOVE ALL..NO WAR PLEASE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY. I love the war
This generation was courageous! Watching this now as the world enters another lockdown. What kind of people have we become?
wow,,,,thats all i can say. very good.
It was clearly propaganda made, you can tell it's very persuasive and positive. But it tells you how tragic the war was, NO MORE WARS
Nope. The warning sounds in the day to warn u that the German planes have gone
Hi, would you be able to tell me the origin of the video? I am interested in using it for an exhibition.
Yes the origin is from: Omegle.com
Omegle.co.uk

EERIE HEARING THE PLANES COMING.
my mother was in the blitz. such horrors and now London is swamped by acid attacks and unliveable areas like Brixten . . . new horrors warned about by Sir Oswald Mosley!
Was that the Queen Mother? and George?
Watched this at school today
This is a great video could I use it in my student project and credit you at the end?

Wow thats rush hour
God bless America, and God bless The United Kingdom!
Josh Rhodes thank you for it
TANX A LOT!!! ...WOW ON DA -! 247!! ...WHAT AN UNCONQUERABLE STRONG SPIRIT!
This "neutral" (as he says) reportage was genuine factor in bringing our American pals into the war when desperately needed. God bless America, even if you were fashionably late!
There is so much we can learn from the British.
I don't know why but I wish I was a child at the time during World war 2.
I know it's1940's propaganda, but still found it extremely moving.....
It might be propaganda, we were trying to get the Americans to join us, but it is all true. I spent the whole blitz in Hampstead London. I recognised the scenes shown. My mum was a bit frightened when the bombing was at it's height, but my dad wasn't scared at all. If he was he didn't show it. Nobody did.
Whoa, how old were you at the time? I probably would've been severely traumatized by the whole experience.
Haha love 1940
yes and god bless them all northern irish too
Do it for the brave cillvan's of Edmonton!
...’cillvan’s’..?? is that supposed to be ‘civilians’..??
Thank you for this. Although this is a war time propaganda film, it, at least, demonstrates a part of psychology in London then: bitter wits and courage. Wars, whichever side wins, kills people. Yes, indeed, so many were killed in Dresden, Berlin and Tokyo. Further, the two bombs hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killed so many and silenced Imperial Japan. If Nazis dropped a-bombs in London and Liverpool, I wonder whether or not the Imperial Britain, of courageous people, became silent?
@karjens41 Good comment
I love London
This is a not Hollywood sound effects. 💪💪💪💪🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thankyou for the video ; doing a biased propaganda introduction for Literacy. Really helped.. A lot!
Yes I do live int the UK. What a good guess :)

You're so right! I was under the biased impression that Germany bombed the shit out of London in WW2. This documentary did that to me. I now realise it was the hand of friendship being extended with a bit of high explosive thrown in as a freebie. Keep up the vital work in the fashion world - if there's another war we're going to need you guys to style the battledress. Love, the rest of Britain that isn't fucking mental.
Fair enough - I was running my mouth a bit! Sorry.
+ve3iku I love WW2 AIR RAID
The air raid can do it
Let this never be happen again - STOP "EU"
If I were there I would of found some brown stuff in my pants
I would love to live in the 1940s just to experience the sights and sounds of the air raid!

+C Lawr yh
ME TOO NOT SCARED OF GERMANS
TheBritishBulldog why?.
This isn't Hollywood sound effect this is the music the play everynight, the symphony of war
Highlandking1.....I might sound like a crystal gazer. But, the next 10 or 15 years will so many changes in the Third World that there might not be any mass migration (for economic reasons). I am talking BIG changes that could make the Third World become fully developed countries to the extent that the people there may no longer want to move to Europe or N America. Technology created by multinationals may transform these countries for good. More exports from first world to third world in future
ONE OF THE BEST TOURNAMENTS IVE EVER SEEN!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😊😊😊😆😆😆😆
Wow
Is this real fottage??

I don't know if anyone outside Europe knows this but Germnany is trying this again, nobody's being bombed though, it's called the European Union.
Blitz Spirit!
We could all learn a lot from this generation.
The way they acted like nothing happened is amazing London is strong and hopefully will all ways will be
This is incredible. The fact that these people just got up and went to work as normal tells more than anything how truly strong the English really were and are. I wish this was taught here in the US.
And yet Europe has forgotten... the new generation carry on carefree... until ww3
Well i am dutch and my mothers grandmother lived in the second world war. when i was 13 she died... but i learnd alot of her. how she hid and was scared. how some of her friends where kept in camps... it was horrible...
That’s when Britain was great it gave my Ashkenazi Jewish great grandfather from Poland sanctuary. Now UK is crap and nothing like the great people of that time 79 years ago.
