- Making your own saltwater is a great way to save money vs. buying it pre-made from a local fish store. Here is how to mix your own and the one big thing you have make sure you do before you add it to your tank.
just found your videos i cant believe i never thought of searching for this stuff on youtube haha. i just bought a 125g tank from my dad and it has a lot of extras i have to learn how they work and how to maintain. big upgrade from my basic 55g tank. i have watched 2 videos now and they have been VERY helpful i love it keep up the great work
Thanks for your emphasis on using RODI water only! I was considering using well water that I know has no chlorine in it, but I can't be sure about heave metals or other trace elements. Thanks again for this information!
Ok good. I'm a beginner so I just been curing some live rock but that's how I been getting my fresh water. I then mix in the salt and check the water. Thanks again.
@064nuno you can, but you'll still need somewhere to keep your RODI water to mix the salt with
Speaking of junk, you should make more videos like this one. Don't be afraid to show us all the products we want to see.
@Nugburner420 I'd only use a dechlor as a last resort. RO DI water should be used at all times.
Never heard of Prime but I'll check it out.
@cbr900rr I don't mix the salt water in there b/c I need some non-salt (fresh) water for my auto top off. When water evaporates from my tank, I replace it with fresh water as the salt doesn't evaporate. If I topped off with saltwater, the salinity in my tank would always be climbing.
@qwerty3885 by the heating system I'm assuming you mean heater. Unless it is really dirty, I don't bother cleaning it. If you do need to clean it, RO/DI works well and soaking it in an water/vinegar bath (see my video about deep cleaning a protein skimmer)
Quick question what ro-di filter do you have ???and do you had any other additives to your mix like ph buffer etc ..??? Thanks
@h1n1v1rus Grocery store water will still have some amount of TDS. The only way to get it to 0 TDS is to both run it through an RO membrane and a DI resin.
Also, you won't know if the grocery store has run the water through the necessary carbon blocks to remove metals/chlorine, etc.
Its best to either make your own RO/DI, or get some from your local fish store.
Either way is fine. Just make sure the tank is cycled before you add fish
Thank you!
@silly8oi TDS of tap water is usually very high - in the range of 130-180 and sometimes as high as 1000. Stress coat will take out the cholrine, but leave in the other junk in your water which lead to issues in your tank.
Your best bet is to get yourself an RO/DI unit, or get RO/DI water from a local fish store if its available.
@Nugburner420 unless you test for chlorine/chloramines (which most people don't)
@silly8oi its called a TDS meter. They are about $20 and worth it as if you don't have one, you won't know if there is junk in your water until things start going wrong with your tank.
I highly recommend you get one if you don't already have one.
yes
Check out Bulk Reef Supply's 5-stage plus unit
I've done several of them on my 90g and several on my new 235 tank. RUclips won't let me links in the comments so just look for them in my channel
There's not much to say other than they are a pain and dipping a coral before it goes in your tank can help prevent them. If you have them you can either keep dipping the coral or manually remove them.
great video :)
hey mark love the channel but when are you going to do a full video? one on your tank or a review anything
@abaneyone Awesome! Well water can have some really high TDS. I have friends who have well setups and their TDS is 400!
If you need a recommendation on a RO/DI system, let me know, I'll be happy to help.
@Gaby3898 distilled water is ok, but not as great as RO/DI. If you have no other alternative, then you can use it.
However:
- your local fish store probably sells RO/DI water. Here it costs 25 cents/gallon so its very affordable.
- a good RO/DI unit will pay for its self very quickly. They are worth the investment.
I use tropic Marin Bioactif
Hi. I wrote you before about using distilled water to mix salt with. I have not and will not do that. Thank you for your reply. However I do have a concern about the reef crystals I've been mixing. I use RO water. I heat it to 74 at least. I add buffer and salt. No matter how long I mix it for it still does not all dissolve. I usually make only 2 gallons because I have a 5 gallon nano. I use a fairly strong power head and let it mix up to 24 hours. When I put it in my tank it looks like snow
@Nugburner420 Interesting. I have lots of friends who use Brutes and they've never noticed this fact.
Did you buy it new?
Ill take you up on the RO/DI system help. Ive been using tap water, no issues. I just want to swap to RO/DI so I can have a more peaceful state of mind. What system do you recommend?
dechlorinator/water conditioner is ok if that's all you have.
When you first started this hobby, did you use RODI water or did you just get water from the tap?
Continued... It does clear up in the tank after a little while but I'm concerned that some of the elements in the salt will get caught in the filtration and sand bed and not stay in the water therefore not benefitting the coral or fish. Can you explain what is wrong please. I would really appreciate it
How long can we keep RO/DI water on a storage?Does it needs circulation or air pump like when we storage tap water?Does it produces this slime on the walls of the storage tank like the tap water does? Thanks
What is the thing that you use to check the RO water? and how much does it cost? thanks
First I wanna say, love all your videos! They have helped me. I'm new to the reefer community. My question is...I just set up 60 gallons of water and added the recommended amount of salt. my salinity is reading about 1.028. How much RO/DI water would you recommend I add to bring the salinity back down to about 1.025? oh and just a little note, there is no livestock in the tank yet.
I'm going to start my 90 gallon reef tank, I was wondering would be wise if i start w/ fish first then corals ?
Hi Mark, this is a great video!
I am about to start my first reef system.
The display tank will be 125gallon and the sump tank 55gallon.
Since I don't have any fish or corrals yet, can I mix my saltwater directly in the main tank?
If yes, should I do this prior to adding the sand and the (dead) rocks or it doesn't matter?
Thanks you so much!
Tony
What if I use tap water with water conditioner like Stress Coat, can i still use the TDS meter to test the water?
Just found you , I've subscribed
Have you heard of plastic trash containers (like Rubbermaid/BRUTE) leaking phosphate into the RO/DI water?
What if you have to use tap water instead of ro/di water? Can you dechlorinate tap water with aquasafe plus water conditioner/dechlorinate?
You go through all the trouble of buying a RO and putting the water into a 55gal food grade barrel, then you do your mixing in a rubbermade trash can. The trash can is not food grade plastic and often contains trace amounts of lead as well as CFC's. You should really buy another food grade barrel for your mixing. Same thing applies to people using regular garden hoses when they should be using fresh water hoses designed for food and RV use.
how many cups of salt do you use for changing 10 gallons of water? i have a 55g tank this is gonna be my first time mixing my own salt water. i have the ro/di, trash can, heater and pump ready to go.
hi iv just started my first salt water tank im only going too keeping fish no coral at first. iv mixed my salt and its at 1.024 do you think this will be ok?? and my temp is 79. iv got a fair bit of live rock in ther at the mo no fish yet. how long shall i cycle my tank with just the rock in. thanks
do you like reef crystals. hows the results.
I know that but what about all 0s. On what you where talking about
Unless the RODI water is being used to make saltwater, there's not need to heat it
how much does a tds meter cost? thanks
hey i was wondering if i can make my own marine aquarium water with distill water and pure sea salt u get at the store ?
Mark, what's your favorite brand of salt
hi mark i am really confused on doseing can u help me?
@mrsaltwatertank Can you please do a video on montipora nudibranch if you know about them?!?! I have them and they suck to have!!!!
Do you play paintball? what are those jerseys in the back?
Can I just buy a cheap, nano sized power head to mix my saltwater? Or do I need something more powerful?
where do i get rodi water and could we use tap water with some conditioners like the ones that make the chlorine gone?
NEVER tap water. Only in an emergency. Would be better to use filtered water from the grocery store. Some say they are reverse osmosis too. I get my saltwater from the local fish store and it is CHEAPER and EASIER than doing it myself.
ClockBloxStudios from a ro/Di water filter you moron, don’t use tap water,if you don’t have spare cold water pipe under sink then you are fucked
What the pro s to ocean water. To mix
Do I have to have reef crystals or can I use instant oceans regular salt mix
Ams Gaming only need reef crystals if you have loads of corals,it helps them big time...
they are cycling jerseys
I wouldn't worry about holes in the top.
why not just put the heater in the rodi water barrel ?
power head gives off heat
those stories seem to come in spurts. People say they leech phosphates, then people test them and say they are clean.
Is 10% a week too much then?
Premium Aquatics has them
Can i Use the cookin salt to make the saltwater ?
No. Table salt usually has iodine added.
I do a 10% on my tank every week is that safe?
About $20
If you are using real saltwater from the ocean then you don't need to mix it.
power head gives of heat
look up "dilution calculator" online and yo'll find a calculator that will give you the answer. I don't know off the top of my head without running the numbers
he looks like Steve from blues clues
That's what I said! Lol
What about real saltwAter.
his app is probably a virus
about $15
