Hi Dave, listen to the entire soundtrack, it's mostly done by M83. Just gorgeous. And yes I will join your patron. I have to join it without attaching my personal info. Long story. 😄😏
Hmm. Check out Predestination (2014), though don't watch the trailer for it first, it might give away some stuff in the movie. Just trust that it's not going to waste your time - It has Ethan Hawke in the lead - and that you're unlikely to have seen a Sci Fi / Time Travel movie like this before. Have fun. Don't spoil it for others though 🙂🙂
Passengers is yet another F'd up movie, as they changed the original and actually great script into a rom-com cheese fest. One of the best twists?! Man..... Besides being predictable AF, you got to see more movies. Solid movie tho!
This and "Edge of Tomorrow" are the 2 Cruise films that got me back into being a fan of his. This movie is criminally underrated in so many ways... and I would call it a "sci-fi classic" already... but that's just me. The soundtrack is top shelf as well.

@@joelellis7035 I think a whole spin-off like that would take away the uniqueness of the character. He's awesome as a side character...I'd take Tropic Thunder 2 or a different movie, where his character would appear, anytime ! When your dad is a Tom Cruise fan, you get to watch his movies over and over again. And I can tell you that Oblivion is a fantastic movie. Well, Tom Cruise pretty much only makes awesome movies.
Yep, I remember seeing this 'new guy' in the early/mid 80s ... "Is he a Brat Packer, or not, not sure ?!", then came a string of progressively massive hits. Cruise became a Juggernaut, and .... so far .... unaffected by the Woke nonsense. Funny, it was years after seeing Legend, that I realised he was the main character !
@@halley4032 Yeah, Cruise does seem to walk on his own beat. He makes movies that are entertaining for the audience and respectful towards the original material. We might as well enjoy his films while we can.
@michaelsegriff3362 Yeah, the whole family is a Cruise fan, but dad really started it. Top Gun was the "kick started" of this, and we stuck with it now because Tom Cruise's films really are a breath of fresh air, not just for the woke stuff but also the green screen stuff. The fact that computer effects are used to a minimum makes his movies significantly more pleasing to watch.
The characterisation of Victoria was great. All throughout the movie you could see her deference to rules and authority and her preference for the status quo. This almost painted Victoria as childlike in her trust of the ultimate authority of Sally, which was ultimately her undoing. For me, this was a bigger tragedy - that she had done everything she thought was right and in the end she was killed for it. It was particularly heart breaking when she realised she was wrong just before she is going to die and she appeals to Jack, in the same childlike way, but he can't save her.
It’s great to see this movie receive some well-deserved appreciation after all these years. The Drinker made a recommendation video for it not too long ago.
I don't know how one cannot appreciate this movie. It's in my Essential collection and was one of the first movies with a good plot twist I showed my kids when they reached the age of understanding it.
Nothing's made me happier than seeing more and more people realize how good this movie is. Its like all the good dystopic 70s SF movies got thrown into a blender with a few Star Trek episodes involving the Borg and it all somehow came out great. Soundtrack's beautiful too!
When Commander Jack was resetting the drone in the presence of Morgan Freeman's character with the soundtrack in the background in melodic tandem, and when Morgan Freeman's character said " Welcome Back Commander " with the Soundtrack crescendoing , it was a very beautiful poetry in motion. The soundtrack is beautiful too.
I never understood this. It had some flaws but this was one of the best movies to see in the theater. I was blown away. Can’t believe it didn’t get good word of mouth. 🤷🏿♂️
It was a good movie. The director, Jo Kosinsky, also did Tron Legacy and you can see that aesthetic in some of the technology designs in the film. Also, Ramble On is my favorite Led Zeppelin song. I remember coming out of the cinema being pretty satisfied with this one.
Your right ,Oblivion is underrated, and I definitely recommend it to any sci-fi fan who has not yet seen it. I’ve always enjoyed watching it. Great production & well acted.
*_Of all this film's many good points, my favorite is the fact that it introduced me to the musical group, M83. Seriously, they did a wondrous job with the soundtrack._*
I saw it at the cinema and the big screen this film looks-MAGNIFICENT.Everything is high quality on the movie and the story is pretty simple. A nice sci-fi film,I enjoyed it. LOL.
This movie is definitely a good rewatch here, it has a special quietness between the action sequences. Thanks for presenting it. And, I can’t help to add that actually, Julia was shot by one of the two Jacks during their fight.
The visuals on Oblivion were absolutely stunning. It had a surprisingly deep character drama thing going on as well, which keeps your interest engaged even if you know the "secret ending".
I loved watching this movie. The pool scene with the thunderstorm below was absolutely haunting. Now that I think about it, it may be one of my favorite movie scenes ever.
Loved every minute of it!! It had a very "Moon, starring Sam Rockwell" vibe about it in many aspects. Soundtrack was awesome too. Its one of those movies where if it's on tv I'll watch it every time❤❤
@@inkermoy No. The one I was thinking about was MUTE. Sam Rockwell's character from MOON is shown multiple times on TVs in the background as he returns to Earth, and then testifies somewhere about what happened on the Moon. Bad movie though.
So glad to see Oblivion getting some love. I stumbled upon this movie totally by accident. After falling out of the habit of going to movies in 2012 and no longer paying attention the next big upcoming movies, I was oblivious to Oblivion. One day, a few years later, I was in my local Asda browsing the 'cheap DVD' section, when I saw it and thought, " must be ok, Cruise is in it ". Was completely blown away and had to watch it several times over. One of my all time favourite Sci Fi movies. That ending scene with Jack Harper's monologue gets me teary eyed, every time.
Although the ending and plot was entirely predictable, I still found this movie incredibly pleasing to watch. The sci-fi ambiance, aesthetics, art direction, sfx, score, are all top notch. Such a chill sci-fi film. Loved it.
One of my favourite films, thanks for covering it. Good story, excellent performances, and a great soundtrack. Also the sound design for the drones was excellent too. I love the production design, as all the Tet's technology has the same design aesthetic, you can tell it's all related. I'd have loved to get a pre-built model of the bubble ship and drone, but there wasn't anything available at the time, and what I've seen since is too expensive or kits that require a lot of effort to build. One thing that was quite subtle in the movie is that clone Vikka was actually very happy in the relationship in their sky tower as the real Vikka had a crush on Jack (despite him being married) and so she had what she wanted - a life with him as her husband/partner. While clone Jack subconciously knew that something was off in the relationship, so was never really happy or settled. The game No Mans Sky seems to borrow quite a bit from this movie's aesthetic, both in the bases you can construct, to the guns and ships, and of course the Atlas stations, some of which look just like the Tet.
I liked it. Excellent soundtrack. Decent story. I think people get obsessed over "The twist", but it's more about how the characters deal with "the twist".
While the twist is not to surpricing, i was on to it quite early on. The twist is still quite good in concept. It's not like 7th sense where the twist is like the full movie. Here the twist is more part of the back story.
One of the best looking 4K Blu-ray disks out there. This on an OLED TV is a visual feast and the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful. The "love is fate" theme at the end just moved me.
I've been saying this about Oblivion for years. One of my favourites, the score deserves more than just a brief mention at the end though. Outstanding movie in my opinion.
This is a pure scifi movie. I believe a lot of people just don't understand movies like this. It's concepts are moving but subtle. It doesn't hit you over the head with simplistic themes like a Marvel movie. This is a fantastic movie as is Passengers. Both have significant themes that only can be explored in the scifi genre. Great review!
watched Oblivion more than 5 times over a period of a few years (latest was last year)...got better every time...cheers, for highlighting it, keep it coming, thank you...God Bless
this was a damn good movie / I remember when it first came out I was blown away by its visual and futuristic atmosphere at the theatre and the score as well
This will be a classic one day, underrated for sure, has all the ingredients of a great Sci-Fi movie, the story, the visuals (the craft Tom Cruise pilots was an inspiration for the creators of the game No Man's Sky for sure), the great soundtracka and sound design. I read they will be making a sequel, looking forward to that. Than you for covering this, as always a grounded take on a great movie. Cheers!
The movie is a bit based when you look at it from this angle: Victoria represents a career woman who is more loyal to her job and company than to her man and uses sex as manipulation. Jack's home with Victoria is a soulless, cold vision of the future where even the smallest flower is not allowed. The meals look manufactured and tastless too. Julia is the traditional wife who wants to live in a nice cosy cottage, tends to a garden full of flowers and when she has sex with Jack it leads to a child.
Yes, it was a surprise movie we had missed. Weve watched it a couple times and have it on a favorites list for those days you want a movie you can miss parts of or fall asleep and still know it. Even with the twist revealed it is still a good movie to re-watch.
It doesn't have a lot of rewatchability. I think I was a bit put off by the color palette of the movie too. It seems faded. But maybe that was done to give a feeling of hopelessness?
We bought Oblivion Blu-ray as soon as we could. We watch it about every 18months or so. Same with Minority Report. Thanks for this review. Glad you mentioned the musical score. Anthony Gonzalez (he is the entire band called M83) did it all with help from a vocalist and a co-writer. A serious music endeavor - one guy does it all!
When I watched this I actually wondered if the Jack that went to the Tet was the second clone and the one who ended up at the hideout was the original Jack, it was never really confirmed once the two Jack’s had the fight which one was which (I know the jackets had their assignment numbers on, but they’re easy to swap). This was a fantastic film.
I also wondered if there aren't even more Jack clones running the same program from different "radiation zones" and if they all won't show up at the house at some point.
Also a big fan. The better Tom Cruise scifi film of that year, if you ask me. Every time I rewatch Live Die Repeat it kinda collapses into tedium in the final act.
Joe Krasinski also did (IMO) the great Tron Legacy and directed Top Gun Maverick. He has a great eye for visuals and mechanical design. Maybe with the success of TGM he can do a few more stylized sci-fi films. Obivion, along with Knight and Day, and Jack Reacher is what put Cruise back on the map for me. His collaboration with Chris McQuarrie on Jack Reacher and Mission Impossible make an unbeatable team set to entertain. Rejoining with Kosinski on TGM just knocked it out of the park. The design work in Oblivion is phenomenal with the Bubbleship, the skyloft, drones, etc. Merging scenes from Iceland to give the world its desolated feel is great. The opening 10 minutes is worth the price of admission alone. Although the Tet using clones and designing a human-like living existence for them is kind of far-fetched, it's just some great sci-fi storytelling. Kind of reminiscent of Moon with the "tweest" but tells a completely different story. (Moon is also great, warning to some that it does have the voice of Kevin Spacey in it).
Oblivion is absolutely underrated. I regularly will do an Oblivion / Edge of Tomorrow double features. Fan-effing-tastic... a deeper and more thoughtful movie than most people give it credit for. Love the premise and how it plays out. The drones are realistically, and disturbingly, frightening...
I can never get enough of the M83 score. This movie made its way into my all-time top 5 in the last few years, I saw it in theaters when it came out and while it didn't enjoy a lot of hype at the time, it was always a winner in my book.
Got Oblivion and Passengers in my blu-ray collection. Both really solid sci-fi movies. Pleased to hear you like them too Dave. A few more from that early to mid teens time just before the woke virus that are also really good is another Cruise vehicle - Edge of Tomorrow, Arrival and Ex_Machina.
@@schmidtythekidd yeah and every movie with a man and a gun gets compared to John wick now. You can share ideas as long as you creat your own theme and style within it.

Watched it several times, really grows on you. Flashbacks slow it down a bit, but necessary for first/second time audiences.
Nothing's made me happier than seeing more and more people realize how good this movie is. Its like all the good dystopic 70s SF movies got thrown into a blender with a few Star Trek episodes involving the Borg and it all somehow came out great. Soundtrack's beautiful too!
Yeah this movie gave me the chills watching it for the first time!!!
Totally agree. Didn't have high hopes because I assumed it would be too Hollywood but it was really surprising.
Oblivion is one of those films that like months or years later it will pop in to your head for no reason and you are left thinking about it again.
Rewatched Oblivion a few days ago, it hasnt aged one bit since 2013, fantastically put together movie. One of my all time favs.
It was a good movie. The director, Jo Kosinsky, also did Tron Legacy and you can see that aesthetic in some of the technology designs in the film. Also, Ramble On is my favorite Led Zeppelin song. I remember coming out of the cinema being pretty satisfied with this one.
Oblivion is one of my favorite movies of all time!
A severely under rated movie. Fairly original with a good cast and great set work. One of my favorites for a rewatch.
You make an effective team.
I love this movie. I go back to it every once in a while.
I gotta admit its always refreshing to watch a positive video about good things....even if the good thing isnt current.
The visuals on Oblivion were absolutely stunning. It had a surprisingly deep character drama thing going on as well, which keeps your interest engaged even if you know the "secret ending".
Excellent movie.. I like to watch it again and again from time to time. the photography is amazing...
"Oblivion" is pretty darn good.
Its one of those movies where if it's on tv I'll watch it every time❤❤
Moon is ALSO a terrific film. Too bad the coda to that movie occurs in the background of a terrible follow up film
@@guyjperson Would that be Source Code? How does it connect to Moon?
@@inkermoy No. The one I was thinking about was MUTE. Sam Rockwell's character from MOON is shown multiple times on TVs in the background as he returns to Earth, and then testifies somewhere about what happened on the Moon. Bad movie though.
On top of the fact this film is a sleeper hit, the soundtrack has lived with me for so long after I saw it. It just hits something deep within.
It also has great sound design. Saw this in IMAX when it came out, and it was incredible. Seriously underrated film.
This movie was made for IMAX, showing off the vast bleakness of the wastelands and the scale of the space/TET scenes.
This and Edge of Tomorrow we’re both films I had not seen until this channel recommended them.
Thanks for that and keep-’em coming!
one of my all time favorite movies, from the plot, to action to the music score - all done well
One of the best looking 4K Blu-ray disks out there.
Totally agree with you. I actually put this up there as one of my favorites of all time.
Oblivion is one of my favorite movies. The cinematography and the music are just fantastic.
Is one of my post 2010 favorites. Far and away a better story & acting than today's recycled garbage that passes for films.
watched Oblivion more than 5 times over a period of a few years (latest was last year)...got better every time...cheers, for highlighting it, keep it coming, thank you...God Bless
Watched this again few days ago and totally agree very underrated movie
this was a damn good movie / I remember when it first came out I was blown away by its visual and futuristic atmosphere at the theatre and the score as well
This will be a classic one day, underrated for sure, has all the ingredients of a great Sci-Fi movie, the story, the visuals (the craft Tom Cruise pilots was an inspiration for the creators of the game No Man's Sky for sure), the great soundtracka and sound design. I read they will be making a sequel, looking forward to that. Than you for covering this, as always a grounded take on a great movie. Cheers!
Oblivion was good. I picked it up on DVD a few years back. It's sitting on a shelf near the TV now, as a pending to re-watch item.
Yeah I’m a fan! The end just kind turns into 2001, but the worldbuilding is super interesting.
I’ve always loved Oblivion. I too still don’t understand why it didn’t perform well at the box office. 😮💨
The movie is a bit based when you look at it from this angle:
Victoria represents a career woman who is more loyal to her job and company than to her man and uses sex as manipulation.
I remember wondering this too,,i felt like the one that stayed was the "original". It was a very clever scene.
I also wondered if there aren't even more Jack clones running the same program from different "radiation zones" and if they all won't show up at the house at some point.
@@Yusuke_Denton that could be awkward at parents evening…. LOL
@@Yusuke_Denton There's a funny video about that on youtube. Search Oblivion HISHE
Totally agreed. Oblivion is a gemstone. Too bad most are oblivious to this great movie
Love this movie what a great ending.
Great movie. The 'behind the scenes' was excellent too. Especially the 360 back projection for the towers.
Also a big fan. The better Tom Cruise scifi film of that year, if you ask me. Every time I rewatch Live Die Repeat it kinda collapses into tedium in the final act.
I liked both movies, but I found Edge of Tomorrow more rewatchable.
Tom Cruise was on fire during this period
Oblivion is absolutely underrated. I regularly will do an Oblivion / Edge of Tomorrow double features. Fan-effing-tastic... a deeper and more thoughtful movie than most people give it credit for. Love the premise and how it plays out. The drones are realistically, and disturbingly, frightening...
I really liked that movie!
Me too.
I loved Oblivion the first time I saw it. Never understood why it wasn't more popular.
I never had doubts since my first watching of Oblivion. Excellent film
It was alright. Edge of tomorrow is a better Tom cruise sci-fi.
Ehh it’s Groundhog Day with aliens.
@@schmidtythekidd yeah and every movie with a man and a gun gets compared to John wick now. You can share ideas as long as you creat your own theme and style within it.
It's one of the best sci-fi films of the modern era and well worth seeing more than once.
My life has changed Thank you Jesus. $32,000 weekly profit Our lord God have lifted up my Life!!,Glory to the everlasting God Almighty......

Always liked this movie. Thank you Mr Cullen.
The costume designer on Morgan Freemans character was seriously cooking! 🔥
The sound made by those drones will haunt me forever.
Absolutely, I only recently discovered this movie on Netflix and immediately bought myself a 4K blue ray copy.
Love this film, never get bored watching, seen at least 20 times. Very underated ❤
I really like re-watching Oblivion. Even knowing the "twist" I just enjoy it. It is simply a good flick.
When I saw this movie I couldn't stop thinking about it randomly during the day over the next 2 weeks. Most movies I've seen were usually forgotten the moment they end.
I adore this movie. Glad to see others appreciate it as well.
I really liked this film. I don't think I've ever seen him in a bad film
THIS HAS BEEN UP THERE WITH MY TOP 5 FAVE FILMS OF ALL TIME SINCE IT CAME OUT. I HAVE LOST COUNT HOW MANY TIMES IVE SEEN IT AND CONTINUE TO WATCH IT.
The soundtrack made by that french group music was out of this world.
I have watched this movie just once, when it hit theatres, and i still remember it clearly.
THANK YOU, Dave. Im glad someone else is able to see and appreciate Oblivion
Thank you for shedding light on this great film! This is one of my favorite films of all time. The Cinematography, the score, the allegory, the performances! I've seen it over a dozen times and get something new out of it everytime.
Couldn't agree more! I've seen it a couple of times recently, and its a lot deeper and more thought provoking than when I first saw it in theaters. Like a great wine, it seems to have improved with age.
I couldn't agree more. I watched this in the Fall of 2022 and was blown away how spectacular it was. I love it. It's incredibly underrated.
I agree. Some really good sci-fi ideas here that really work! Not sure why it isn't better known!
This has one of the best 4K visuals by far. Its reference quality.
