i disagree. sadly this film was made 10 years too late and if it where made today we would of seen a real message. jacks wife would of realised she don't need no man and become a proud gay trans man. that's whats important.

Look it up on RUclips, it’s called M83 - Oblivion, and yes it’s an amazing soundtrack and was my favourite part about the movie along with the sheer visuals

Literally just watched this yesterday. Can't agree more, I remembered it being OK but I was surprised just how good it was on re-watching. God we had it easy back then.
it didn't have enough strong female characters and a strong enough message to the audience telling them how to think and live their lives. thats why it gets a solid D- from me.
Well, I was kinda surprised this film got his attention for I too remember it as being OK like you. But I’m gonna rewatch it soon to give it another shot.
“How can a man die better than facing fearful odds? For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his gods.” This was a sci fi epic that is slowly getting the love and appreciation it always deserved.
How can you talk about Oblivion without mentioning its soundtrack? It is one of the three OSTs that got into my playlist and stays there for years (other two are Sunshine and Silent Hill 2 game). Usage of non-original songs is spot on too.
100%. Every piece is perfect for the situation, never overpowers the scene and builds to match the desired emotion at just the right point for it to hit harder.
I've introduced to M83's music with this movie. What a great OST! I haven't seen this movie for years, maybe it is the time for a rewatch. It has some flaws, but overall there is a bunch of things that I love about this movie: the acting, the beautiful cinematograpy, the futuristic designs, the plot twist(s)... and ofc, M83's OST.
One of the things I really appreciate about Oblivion is that they don’t over explain The Who or what the bad guy is. It doesn’t go out of its way to answer every little question and left me feeling like I knew just as much about the alien as the characters in the movie did.
Yeah. All you need to know is the bad guys are there, and they have to end them. I mean, it allows the intelligence of the viewer to assume certain things without explanation - you just figure out on your own that ........SPOILER....... . . . . ....there's an incredibly powerful, conquering AI intelligence that destroys planets in this particular way by killing the inhabitants and stealing its resources. That's all you need.
You make a great point what is understood need not be explained, less is more theory figure it out on your own or come up with your own explanation. Too often Hollywood wants to do a backstory on everything when it isn't needed or warranted like the SOLO movie for instance. What I pictured in my mind was far more interesting than the pile of shit film Disney put out. The film reminded me of Omega Man with Charlton Heston. Some people might be put off by the slow pacing of the film but I really enjoyed it.
"One of the things I really appreciate about Oblivion is that they don’t over explain The Who or what the bad guy is. It doesn’t go out of its way to answer every little question " Plus not overexplaining also avoids getting caught up in a lot of details that will inevitably leave plot holes.
I saw this movie in the theater with my son. We both walked out saying: "that's what a sci-fi movie SHOULD be". I've rewatched it once or twice since then, and compared to the drek being made today it's a freaking classic. Amazing how awful todays movies are in comparison.
I'm reading all these comments and just wondering how I came to such an opposite opinion. What did I miss? Why do so many people love this movie and yet I found it so boring, hating it was too much effort. So I settled on I just disliked the movie. Did I see the same movie? Lol
@@gr-8166 this was the first movie where I predicted everything before it happened on screen. I felt like I was 10 mnutes ahead of the story. That really took me out of the experience. It made it boring. It felt contrived. I liked that it was logical. It wasn't a stretch from point A to B. But the fact I called it all before it happened... that was jarring. I don't like turning off my brain, but usually it goes quiet and just runs in the background if that makes sense. I want to know where I'm being taken in the story. As I kept being right about what would happen next, I found myself getting more and more disappointed.
One of the rare films that don't rely uniquely on the twist to work (or not). We kinda knew what was coming, but the character didn't, so it was just interesting to see unfold.
I think his dedication to his roles and his insistence on quality production are key. He takes this stuff incredibly seriously. I didn't think much of him and didn't watch many of the movies he's in for most of my life, but recently discovered they're actually totally worth watching. Not sure what I think of him personally, but there's no denying that the guy is a top notch performer.
Vika is actually a very tragic character, in love with and living with a man who can't reciprocate the affection, while serving a cause that views her as expendable. There are also hints that she recognizes Julia all along. Lastly, it took me multiple viewings before I realized that the reason they never get the replacement shielding for the drone down in the repair room is because it is their solely to kill them.
I had a friend tell me the movie was terrible. I watched it anyway. Then I had a long quiet reflection reconsidering our friendship. I was impressed with the entire film. It wasn't a frenetic, shallow CGI fest. It was an interesting, thoughtful, entertaining, sci-fi action film with actual plot and character development (or at least character revelation) with an excellent ending. It really was a wonderful, adult sci-fi film.
agreed - this one hits some kind of sweet spot. One of the few movies I've gone out and physically purchased. As a designer by trade the art is pure inspiration. Also the soundtrack is very special - particularly the second half when things get intense.
@@NoSlow78 "So a cloned Tom Cruise and a mortally wounded Morgan Freeman have snuck aboard a malevolent alien spaceship armed with a thermonuclear device, and the Cruiser gives this epic monologue about Horatius at the bridge, before heroically sacrificing themselves by detonating the bomb, blowing the ship to hell and thus saving the human species." I'm sorry, but anyone who doesn't find that premise as epic as the rest of us is no friend of ours lol "Fuck you Sally!"
I remember being blown away by this film. The soundtrack was excellent and the attention to detail in little things such as the motorcycle (which was designed to actually fold up and worked) added a lot to the film’s uniqueness.
The gyrocoptor was a concept design by one of the greatest concept artists in the business - he perfectly blends function and form. He spent many months designing it,
One of my all-time faves, from the first watch. Critics just can't see what it has to offer. And Jack's final line, the delivery, the music. What a moment of cinema.
This movie is SO underrated! It’s the epitome of a product being more than the sum of its parts. It has that strange familiar quality that makes me want to stay home from work and watch it early in the morning by myself. Lol I may be alone on that. Nevertheless, Oblivion is definitely one of my favorites. And this review is a spot on!
As an unlicensed therapist :))...your urge to stay home and watch it is probably caused by you really wanting something different in life with a lot more solitude but not alone and peace. Probably caused by frustration and unhappiness from whatever you maybe dealing with in life that is making you rationalize the pro and con of a situation as in the movie and if you would be happier somewhere else. But then again who doesn't want to be stranded on a floating island with a pretty lady, in a nice house with a pool, have all the food you want and no bills, So I feel you friend...:))

The irony is not lost on me that as time passes we're increasingly appreciating Cruise. He may well be the last movie star and may enable some good movies in the coming years. While I'm seriously conflicted, this ends up being a good example of separating art from personal life.
Yes. I never really liked him as a "serious" actor, but since he's gone into action and sci-fi films I've come to appreciate him, as a producer as well. He is not a great actor, but his acting chops are still superior to those of most action stars, and he obviously puts in a lot of effort physically as well.
Ironically Rain Man is still one of my favorite TC movies mainly because of his character Charlie Babbitt and his emotional journey and realizations. He is a great actor as well
In the cinema the sound effects on this movie were incredible. Whoever engineered the sound was a genius - last time I saw a film that made me want to look behind me this often was Event Horizon.
I loved the sound in this movie. It is actually what I remember the most from watching it in theater. Just in one scene when he was going across the scene with the ship was perfection. And the feeling of how it vibrated in my chest when the "low volume" but deep bass not hit me but almost caressed me.
Yeah, I think everything in this movie is great... the visuals, the art-design, no useless CGI (e.g. real motorcycle), the soundtrack, the sound design, the cast... Oblivion is one of my all time favrorite movies.
I’m confused as to why this movie didn’t do well when it was released. I absolutely adore this movie. Great sci-fi. Bleak yet beautiful. Tight script. Twists I actually didn’t see coming (one I did). Great ending. We truly were spoiled.
Critics panned the movie because of its many overused sci-fi tropes, which didn't help box-office turn out. But I for one think that Oblivion is much more than the sum of its parts.
The way they surrounded the glass sky house with screens just so the surfaces would have actual reflections was brilliant. Capturing massive surround visuals from the top of a volcano (AFAIK) to avoid CGI projections.
I've been saying this for years now. Oblivion is so underrated. Ever so often I come back to watch it. Weirdly feels new every time. Also the pace in this movie is perfect and I liked the character played by Mr. Freeman..... "Tell me. Have you ever met a scav up close? Of course not. You just repair drones. Don't go into the radiation zone. Don't ask too many questions."...the pause..." Not part of the.. " he pauses again ..." job description"
Yes I agree completely. It's on my list of movies that I just like to rewatch every now and then, and bask in its beauty. And even though know how it ends I still get 'surprised' by it😊.
Imagine my delight when I first watched this as I knew nothing, and I mean nothing, about it other than the title. Going to any film blind is always best but especially with a streamlined plot like Oblivion, once you begin to tell the story you've already ruined so many surprises.
I’ve always loved this movie. Despite the relatively mediocre feedback from critics, I’ve always found it stunning, well-acted, and original, with a great score by M83 and a solid cast too. It’s also really nice to see a Tom Cruise sci-fi movie that’s just a single entity. The end leaves no opportunity for a sequel or a franchise, it’s just a singular story
Also, it's (kind of) an original story, almost unheard of in the current film industry. I've seen that it's based on a graphic novel, but that's from the author and was unpublished at the time. Doesn't make the film an adaptation, it moreso makes the graphic novel a storyboard for this film.
I thought this was the best sci-fi movie I had seen in years when I first saw it a couple of years ago. Loved it. A huge part of what pulls you into the story is the amazing soundtrack. The music is extremely effective & suits the movie perfectly, an amazing score.
I always felt bad for Victoria. She had no idea why the guy she loved - the guy she thought loved her - just couldn't love her as much as she loved him. EDIT: Also, the way Susanne Sundfør belts out the song at the end is... powerful. Quite a soundtrack.
After the Tet goes down, just think about all the other Jacks and Victorias out there, what is going to happen if they meet some of their mirror images?
I've been going through a Tom Cruise revival period thanks to Top Gun. I've never been his hugest fan, but I think we took him for granted, especially in light of today's "action stars". If I'm honest, he has always put out consistently good films, with the odd miss or artistic experiment here and there. I loved Edge of Tomorrow despite myself, and Minority Report is still awesome. The guy deserves a heartfelt Thank You, Sir for the sheer heart he puts into everything he does. One of the last male movie heroes for sure.
All in all he has the most top tier catalog outside of Clint Eastwood. 5/6 of the Mission Impossible movies are better than almost every Bond film on avg
@@rafaelfarias4359 I was a Daniel Craig fan with all his Bond movies till the most recent one… “No Time to Die.” that was a total waste of time and money. It’s the movie when they desecrated the whole Bond franchise with wokeness and they even killed Bond!! I regret paying to rent it on Apple TV. In all fairness Daniel Craig didn’t write the script, however I don’t like that he agreed to be part of a woke movie. I would’ve said no thanks, trash that story or don’t count me in.
Dude, your Extra Shots series is amazing. You feature all my favorite movies. I have always loved Oblivion even though (as you point out) it may not be his best. There's just something about it. It reminds me of a golden age science fiction novel.
It was a safe movie. A fairly traditional plot in a pretty setting starring a straight white couple as the leads. Competent but kind of unspecial. That the current film climate is in a state where it's praiseworthy is kind of sad.
@@Gstrangeman96 I beg to differ The movie is much more than "typical white male..couple lead.." blah blah blah...unspecial. What about the colors, the landscape the tech within the film. I'm glad there are others out there that enjoyed this movie, seeing that at the time, none of my friends seemed to care for it. One additional thing I'd like to add is that the soundtrack was spectacular and I even downloaded some of the songs to play on my ipod at the gym.
@@Senpaiaproves Awe, it made me feel a sense of awe with all the beautiful landscapes. And it made me want to live in that cool apartment on the cloud line so I could swim in that amazing pool. But mostly I was just in a state of awe...
The massive WOOOOOMP that accompanies the opening title almost blew my ass out in the cinema. In fact the sound design as a whole, including the great score is outstanding. This and Edge Of Tomorrow, while not deep thought provoking sci fi are still incredibly well made and highly entertaining.
?? It's got more interesting ideas than 90% of faction/sci-fi films out there, the main characters don't have to be quoting Descartes or Russell the whole film.
You can thank Hans Zimmer and Christopher Nolan for those massive BAAAAAAM, and WOOOOOMMPPP sounds in every soundtrack ever since Inception lol. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Zimmer helped M83 on this soundtrack like he did with Daft Punk on Tron.
Relax fellas... I just mean thought provoking in the sense that if you think too much about the plot it starts to unravel...I fucking love these movies.
Edge of tomorrow, I thought was an acttion copy of groundhog day, until I watched it...excellent film! I loved his arc, from laughing stock rookie to battle hardened veteran not giving a f about anything
This isn’t just one of my favourite Sci-Fi movies, it’s also from a time that was a golden era of well thought out movies with amazing physical sets, brilliant storylines and well realised characters. And at the time I couldn’t wait to see what new amazing movie came out next, both in the cinema and on Blu-Ray… then it all crashed and burned. So now I just watch the handful of good movies we get now, and enjoy my collection of Blu-Ray’s from the lost era of brilliant films.
I really enjoyed this one even when it first came out. It was impressive on the big screen and there was an interesting story arc that kept me engaged through out. "How can a man die better...." Loved it.
I think what makes it all the more enjoyable is the music M83 and Anthony Gonzalez created an otherworldly-synth soundtrack which seemed to fit perfectly with every scene. Jack's monologue about Horatius at the bridge was made even more epic thanks to the score.
I’m glad more people are appreciating this film, this has been one of my all time favorite movies growing up but every time I ask someone if they’ve seen it it’s always a no
This movie blew my mind when I first saw it. Just happened to catch it on TV one day. Without a single thought about it in my mind. Never even heard of it. Got to take it all in without a clue about anything. By the end I was like: "I don't know how I've never heard of this gem but am sure glad I got to watch it without any thoughts formed beforehand" Great movie, so much so that plot holes can be overlooked with ease.
It's for films like this that I always avoid trailers. They usually can't help telegraphing the plot, so its always good to go in without knowing where its probably going to lead from the start.
This movie is a classic at this point (although extremely underrated), it's just unique. SO MUCH attention to detail. Also... my god the end credits music with M83+Susanne Sundfør is just the cherry on top! I was blown away by the soundtrack.
This film was excellent, particularly those creepy drones. I love how they had that slanted X-shaped face, to help give them an angry, evil appearance.
@@theadmiral4625 The sound made by drones is the only thing that makes my body bristle in so many movies I've seen, a more threatening sound I haven't heard anywhere.
This is one of those movies that I always appreciated but never really heard anyone else talk about. It's a perfect example of how important world building is to a good story. Take notes Disney Wars producers!
I think this came out after he burned his public image with those weird shenanigans. I saw it alone in the theater and tried to recommend it to friends. Literally no one was interested.
I watched this with my lovely wife back when it was in the theaters. Tom Cruise has had a decent sci fi portfolio. What I love about them is that unlike so many films we get nowadays, his sci fi films give you moments to stop and think and consider what's going on before delivering the next punch. We both enjoyed seeing this film at the time. Cruise seems to have a knack for creating a decent, adult film.
I just saw Mission Impossible 4 and W O W... theres moments on that movie that make my toes curl and hang on to my seat... if a movie can give you that feeling, then it must be pretty damn good, Tom Cruise is the best
I watched this 3 times in two days, it's one of those movies that have perfect pace and harmony during each shot and each scene. It impressed me so much that I recommended it to people saying it pays homage to themes from the Matrix and Moon, not ripping them off. Also, look up how they filmed the scenes in the sky tower using practical effects and not CGI, showing how much planning and care went in on this.
I like Moon too, also bought the disc. But Kevin Spacey’s voice always takes me out of connecting with the robot. Something about it doesn’t quite sound robotic enough. By contrast, the woman who did the spaceship’s computer voice in _Sunshine_ was total perfection. Anyone’s watched that movie? Also highly recommended, even with its flaws and all.
In my opinion a film to be listed among the top ten sci-films of all time....cast, plot, writing, acting, visuals, editing, and sound track.. all 5 star... I tip my shot glass to The Drinker on this.
This is how I feel about War of the Worlds. That film just hits all the right notes and the father /parent relationship was so well done. I love that film. But I will have to rewatch Oblivion now. I forgot how magnificent the scenery was.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the score. I thought the music was ominous yet beautiful futuristic yet familiar. It really set the mood for the scenes.
Enjoy the extended mix. It’s the best piece of soundtrack I’ve ever heard. Have to jam out to it whenever it comes up in rotation. ruclips.net/video/mSNSpIFiKRs/видео.html
Me and my friends almost died laughing when they said “and then you came…THOUSANDS OF YOU”. Just imagining being invaded by an army of tom cruise. We then called this movie “copious amounts of Tom cruise the movie. However after growing up i now realize it would be kind of terrifying for a man who keep doing his own insane stunts to attack your planet.
LOL right? Just imagine all those Cruise faces. Someone should make a battle simulation and have all kinds of different Cruises. Maverick, Jerry Maguire, Les Grossman, etc.
I'm a sci-fi junkie and it's depressing how few and far between truly good sci-fi movies and shows are, especially considering how much amazing source material there is out there. Yet that's also part of my dilemma. I'd love to see more great books on the big screen, but with Hollywood's tendency to dumb down and politicize everything they touch, maybe it's better that I don't live to see my favorites get shit on, I mean, "adapted". I get much more excited when I see animated adaptions, or shorts people created for channels like Dust here on YT.
Ender's game was rather a disappointment. A shame really, as the Ender series is one of the best Sci Fi stories in my opinion. Extremely thoughtful with complex characters and motives. With twists and turns, friendships, strained families. And strained relationships, mistakes, and successes with truly creative and interesting alien species. That all comes together in truly unique perspectives and story. It was never going to adapt well to film. Too much is focused on the characters thoughts. They tried though. The result wasn't an outright failure, but it was underwhelming. Some stories are just meant to remain in words. I wish more people these days were bigger on reading. Movies are great, but they usually don't have the story telling potential of books. Some things are better in a visible movie/show/game form. And some are better in novel form.
Andrea Riseborough as Vika was really good in this film as a woman at the wrong end of a love triangle. Joseph Kosinski is a trained architect so I wouldn't be surprised if he designed the house in the film.
And i love that its sleek and futuristic but also just barely molded to fit the humans living in it. That was one of my favorite parts with it is the technology and architeture were designed by an alien intelligence trying to give the miminum to its slaves but not ruin its own sense of efficient utilitarian construction. God this movie is fantastic.
I loved this movie right away! I was confused about the not so good reception it had by critics and Tom Cruz fans because, as you stated, it's visually charming, and the story is almost flawless. The cast is awesome and the English babe who costarred the movie, Andrea Risenbroubrg... brahrbur... was a treat. Damn that chick! This is going to be a sci fi cult classic and we must recognise, appreciate and thank Tom Cruise for making great sci fi movies. He definitely have a good taste in choosing those scripts.
I HATED this when it came out. Watched it recently and absolutely loved it. Such an unappreciated gem. The Drinker says that we were Spoilt For Choice when this came out, whereas I think that we are starved for quality nowadays, hence why so many are trawling through the movies of yesteryear.
Just out of curiosity, how old were you when it first came out? This strikes me as the kind of movie that I would have found boring when I was under 25 but now love. Kind of like when I first saw them, I though Alien was "OK, but took too long to get going" but Aliens was so amazing. Now, my opinion has totally flipped and I think the original is far better because it takes its time and keeps it's action confined to a few scenes to allow the brooding terror time to sink in.
@@ressljs I was 37 when it came out, the thing is,I've liked this kind of science fiction all of my life: reading John Wyndham as a child, growing up with Star Wars, Alien,Predator and appreciating movies such as Gataca, Moon, I Am Morher.... I was just telling my 12 year old son about this movie the other day, we will be watching that here shortly. Tom Cruise has had his vast list of movies but two that really stand out when it comes to Syfy is totally exactly what you said! Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion.
Couldn't agree more with it "going up in my mind" over the years. The visuals hold up and surpass most of today's movies and the soundtrack is perfect. Perfectly paced and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
The flying scene fighting the drones in the canyon was truly amazing to watch in theaters. I felt like I was in the cockpit. I remember smiling while sitting there. Such a beautiful film.
@@mlinscott2 Yes I work in CG, but on the pre-production side. So we layout in 3D the action sequences and play with the shots and camera work to figure out how they want to shoot it on the day, without making big mistakes that cause re-shoots. Some times we get our own ideas in the film (I came up with how the bubbleship does a 180 by flipping upside down, and then rolling laterally) .
The whole film had fantastic visuals in general. I thought it was pretty underrated. You think you can head over to the obi wan series and try and fix that? 😂
Cues to be taken from this movie: If you ever have recurring dreams of a woman you've never met, well... Careful where you tread. If you ever have a drone numbered 166, never make it angry. And last, if you ever come across Macaulay's book; read it. Makes for some pleasant poetry, indeed. Nice one, Drinker. Oblivion still holds a sweet spot in my filmic preferences. The ending leaves that bittersweet aftertaste not so uncommon in real life. Cheers. P.S. With the new Top Gun movie, guess nobody's laughing at Kosinski now.
Both those films had great visuals and score. If only Tron Legacy had a better script. They literally wrote the script around the score for that movie which explains a lot.
my favorite part of the film. The soundtrack played during the leadup to Vicka's death is called "you can't save her" which I find just such a nice subtle nod to her character's tragic personality defect which will never allow Jack to break her out of the Tet's spell, no matter how many clones of Vicka he tries to save. She's always going to "Titan". Such a minor note, but really showed that the people making this cared.
I love this movie! I remember not wanting to leave the theater until every last note of that incredible score was played. The film is actually based on a graphic novel that never came to full realization. There's some great images out there of what it was going to look like for anyone interested, but unfortunately I don't have a link on hand.
The Soundtrack....... don't forget the soundtrack........ one of very few movies that we have just sat there in silence as the credits roll and the emotion continues to build. Stunning production all round.
Loved this film a lot. One of the things I appreciated was the simplistic, yet devastating capabilities of the drones. You know they look menacing, they sound menacing, you know they don't fuck around when one comes to aid Jack. Then towards the end of the film you know these things are *fucking terrifying*
I love this film. Easily my favourite sci-fi movie of the last 10 years. Is some of the setup silly and contrived? Yes. Sure. The performances, visual design, sound design and overall story are masterfully executed though. This is a director that needs more films under their belt.
I’ve been saying this since Tron: Legacy, what I love about the man is his visual style is very settled and lets viewers to take in the worlds he was allowed to create.
Spot on! Thank you, Drinker. Basically, your take on all of the movies you've reviewed is identical to mine. And so, if you say something is shite, I shall avoid it!
I think this is the first time I have disagreed on pretty much every level. I was not a fan when I saw this movie in theater. I'm not trying to be a debby downer. Just thought it was boring and predictable. I've only seen it the one time opening weekend.

Fell in love with this movie first time I watched it. Theres something really special and fulfilling about the story and the atmosphere its overall beautiful. Just recently watched again after learning about Kosinski and Cruise ties between this movie and TG2. Man, like TG2, Oblivion is a gem. I particularly love the entire story-emotional buildup to the line "If we have souls, they are made of the love we share... undimmed by time and bound by death." Just overall a beautiful and badass movie. One followup note, for some reason .. Victoria is sexy as all hell.
"Theirs 2 things that can never stay hidden forever, the moon, and the truth." And if you look to the stars in this movie, the truth of the story's plot is staring you right in the face.
I enjoyed the movie when I saw it during its theatrical release, and I've revisited it a few times over the years. I thought the story, acting, visuals, and soundtrack were spot-on. I don't understand why it didn't do better at the box office. Compared to the crap coming out today it was an absolute masterpiece.
I had the fortune of watching this with a friend at the movies too. I walked away feeling very happy. I was even happier when I watched Interstellar in 2015; blew me away. Those were good times before wokeness ruined everything. What’s really sad is the generation growing up now having zero great movies.
On the other hand if you go back and watch movies like RoboCop, you will realize that there were definitely junk movies made in the good old days. We just remember the great ones.

One of the best of the 21st Century imo. Great flick. Magnificent visuals, top tier performance and FX, incredible score, poignant story. Dad and I love this movie!
Love this movie! From the music, to the visuals, to a plot that shows its secrets early but carefully disguises them with slight obfuscation of detail to make you question why something happens, to the line Vica says about "it's always her!" Leading you to wonder if her dreams were being fulfilled while Jack's were not, leading to the polar opposite reactions at times. The way it shows how the writers and directors think the audience is smart is wonderful in a world of superhero sloppy seconds.
Oblivion was the first production to use LED screens instead of green screens for its background visuals. Jon Favereau stole credit for using the tech first for The Mandalorian. Similar to how he stole credit for the technology he used for The Lion King(2019) from Surf’s Up. JON!
I remember when this was just, ya know, a normal movie. It wasn't cruises best, not his worst. It was an interesting concept with gorgeous visuals and it was genuinely alot of fun to watch. Just an all around good movie.
Great review of a a Great Sci-fi movie. Oblivion was unique, made with more imagination and realism than most sci-fi movies. Quality like this movie is rare now. Spot on review.
This is, by far, my favorite modern film! Thank you for giving it some much needed credit! Also, the unique synth/orchestral score amazing to listen on its own!
I always thought this was an underappreciated sci-fi with great talent on both sides of the camera, loved the attention to detail and the score. This and Tron Legacy were a warmup for what Top Gun Maverick would be
Love the film. It is one of those films that I occasionally watch purely for aesthetic reasons, like Tron legacy. In both cases the visuals together with the music are an experience in and of itself (in Tron Legacy even more so). M83 did a fantastic job with the soundtrack, like Daft Punk in Tron. A perfect synthesis of picture and tone. both are not perfect movies, but they are still good, and the aesthetics elevate them and make them into something truly special, that creates a more immerse experience than many movies with better stories or acting
I could still watch Koyaanisqatsi. I have even watched it a few tines where I muted the audio and played a different set of music that seemed like it could link to the cinematography. And yeah: Tron Legacy is an underrated movie imo. Even the plot has aged better than I would have thought. And the meme lol? Jeff Bridges fighting Jeff Bridges on a Bridge. Hilarious.
I saw this movie many times when it came out. I was never bored despite having a simple and predictable plot, clearly this has been done before. but being so well presented, it is enjoyable. It always felt like a guilty pleasure
I almost think there is an untold story within a story going on with Vika. I understand being scared of change, but she was a little too scared to question anything. I think she had already figured things out, marked the situation as hopeless, and just wanted things to keep going as long as they could with Jack. The possibility that she had lost her original Jack and gotten a replacement crossed my mind as well.
I remember seeing this movie and loving it. Then I went on the internet excited to find reviews that confirmed my love for the movie and being underwhelmed by the critics and thinking I had bad taste in movies. I still watch this movie every time I see it on TV.
I used to care what critics used to say but realized they don't understand the genre or have hidden agendas. The Drinker and i both like many of the same movies. His review is such more meaningful as a result. Oblivion, Minority Report, and Edge of Tomorrow are some of my favorite sci Fi movies
I feel this way about 'Passengers' The reviews seem to slant negative and some definitely came across as woke and judgmental. It's one of the last times I liked a movie enough to buy a hard copy of it.
I remember watching this in the theatre and enjoying it, then nearly everyone I knew at the time taking a huge dump on. I don't get the hate this film received then and now. It's one of my favorite sci-fi films. Which upon many rewatchings now, I appreciate even more, especially with the current state of things. There's just not much to complain about. It does everything very well. It didn't hurt that a few years later I landed a job working at a prop shop and a bunch of the oblivion props arrived on my desk. I was able to handle, and refinish/refurbish, many props from the film. I even hand crafted replicas based on the original props. It gave me an even greater appreciation for the level of work and detail that was given to every little moment of the film.
i can totally relate to this. When I first saw the movie in cinemas it was the same reaction, "cool, that was fun" then went home and didn't think too much about it. Strangely though it kept coming back to my mind and the soundtrack popped up in my head from time to time. After a while I watched it at home and enjoy it more each time now. The performances, direction, art style, visuals and sound design in particular make it a worthy watch even if the story is slightly predictable.
I never quite understand the hate that this film had - it is honestly one of my favourite science fiction films. And that M83 soundtrack? Phenomenal!
100% agree and that soundtrack is unreal
i disagree. sadly this film was made 10 years too late and if it where made today we would of seen a real message. jacks wife would of realised she don't need no man and become a proud gay trans man. that's whats important.

M83 was an excellent artist choice for score
Literally just watched this yesterday. Can't agree more, I remembered it being OK but I was surprised just how good it was on re-watching. God we had it easy back then.
it didn't have enough strong female characters and a strong enough message to the audience telling them how to think and live their lives. thats why it gets a solid D- from me.
Well, I was kinda surprised this film got his attention for I too remember it as being OK like you. But I’m gonna rewatch it soon to give it another shot.

“How can a man die better than facing fearful odds?
For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his gods.”
This was a sci fi epic that is slowly getting the love and appreciation it always deserved.
How can you talk about Oblivion without mentioning its soundtrack? It is one of the three OSTs that got into my playlist and stays there for years (other two are Sunshine and Silent Hill 2 game). Usage of non-original songs is spot on too.
Totally agree. The soundtrack is better than the film, honestly.
100%. Every piece is perfect for the situation, never overpowers the scene and builds to match the desired emotion at just the right point for it to hit harder.
Came here for this comment. Spot-on. The theme is magnificent.
Movie was already solid but that soundtrack put it over the top. Still listen to some tracks often.
I miss when stuff like this was the norm. And not making a show/movie out of every single question....
It doesn’t go out of its way to answer every little question "
Plus not overexplaining also avoids getting caught up in a lot of details that will inevitably leave plot holes.
Well said.
Lol
@@christopherhartford5066 well what exactly did you dislike?

It made it boring. It felt contrived. I liked that it was logical. It wasn't a stretch from point A to B. But the fact I called it all before it happened... that was jarring. I don't like turning off my brain, but usually it goes quiet and just runs in the background if that makes sense. I want to know where I'm being taken in the story. I think Tom Cruise has more movies that I enjoy than any other actor. He is so consistent.
After rewatching it became clear when he asked her if she has memories
I had a friend tell me the movie was terrible. I watched it anyway. Then I had a long quiet reflection reconsidering our friendship. I was impressed with the entire film. It wasn't a frenetic, shallow CGI fest. It was an interesting, thoughtful, entertaining, sci-fi action film with actual plot and character development (or at least character revelation) with an excellent ending. It really was a wonderful, adult sci-fi film.
Does your friend like Star Trek? Especially Nutrek?

The irony is not lost on me that as time passes we're increasingly appreciating Cruise. He may well be the last movie star and may enable some good movies in the coming years.
While I'm seriously conflicted, this ends up being a good example of separating art from personal life.
Tom Cruise is underrated as an entertainer despite being the biggest movie star on the planet. It's a paradox, but it's true.
Yes. I never really liked him as a "serious" actor, but since he's gone into action and sci-fi films I've come to appreciate him, as a producer as well. He is not a great actor, but his acting chops are still superior to those of most action stars, and he obviously puts in a lot of effort physically as well.

Yeah the marketing trailer completely ruined one of the major plot points at the time. The reveal of other human characters being on earth was ruined
Critics panned the movie because of its many overused sci-fi tropes, which didn't help box-office turn out. But I for one think that Oblivion is much more than the sum of its parts.
Didn't get released under a different name or something screwing with the marketing?
The way they surrounded the glass sky house with screens just so the surfaces would have actual reflections was brilliant. Capturing massive surround visuals from the top of a volcano (AFAIK) to avoid CGI projections.

OH, OH, but how many clones of Jack are on this devasted Earth. I see money there....
Also, it's (kind of) an original story, almost unheard of in the current film industry.
I've seen that it's based on a graphic novel, but that's from the author and was unpublished at the time. Doesn't make the film an adaptation, it moreso makes the graphic novel a storyboard for this film.

M83 did a grewat job. Still listen to "outro" from time to time.
It's not that funny
This movie is a 10. All around. Soundtrack 10 / Visual 10 / Acting 10 /Story 10.
this was the last movie i showed my dad before he passed. we both enjoyed it immensely.
One of my favourite films, the score is exceptional. Love M83!
Well all truly good movies are few and far between.
It isn't just sci fi
“Adapted for a modern audience”
Like iRobot…
I recommend (if you haven't seen them already): Moon.
I Am Mother.
Gataca.
Arrival.
Interesting, I didn't know that!
I Love this movie. It’s very emotional. You can see so much on each actors face.
It’s a love story and science fiction and both are done brilliantly.
Genuinely loved this film. Interesting story and decent action. The director is fantastic aswell
I liked Oblivion A LOT. It's just got a style that I really appreciate.
Why did you hate it though?
I'm not sure why I initially disliked this film....but I do remember that I disliked Morgan Freemans entrance to the film.
Nowadays I hold this film in high regard... a nice post appocolyptic sci fi.
I haven't watched this (Drinkers) video yet. But I just watched the movie with no other knowledge than knowing the name. I loved this movie.
I was just telling my 12 year old son about this movie the other day, we will be watching that here shortly. Tom Cruise has had his vast list of movies but two that really stand out when it comes to Syfy is totally exactly what you said! Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion.
Minority report is my personal fav. highly recommend
You should watch the movie Moon.. it covers drive the same themes.. But i feel it does it better and with more of a limited budget.
@@hadriangonzalez607 yeah I thought Sam Rockwell was in that that was a crazy ass movie when he found out he was a clone
@@chadruland5460 he was in it.. And yeah it's one of my favorite sci Fi movies..
Couldn't agree more with it "going up in my mind" over the years. The visuals hold up and surpass most of today's movies and the soundtrack is perfect. Perfectly paced and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
M83 baby
The flying scene fighting the drones in the canyon was truly amazing to watch in theaters. I felt like I was in the cockpit. I remember smiling while sitting there. Such a beautiful film.
I really enjoyed that scene as well. It didn't feel overdone and fake like so many modern action movies.
I helped design that sequence. Appreciate that you felt like you were in the cockpit, we focused heavily on that
@@MrIamabazaba that is so cool! Great work! Were you on the CG part of the design?
@@mlinscott2 Yes I work in CG, but on the pre-production side. So we layout in 3D the action sequences and play with the shots and camera work to figure out how they want to shoot it on the day, without making big mistakes that cause re-shoots. Some times we get our own ideas in the film (I came up with how the bubbleship does a 180 by flipping upside down, and then rolling laterally) .
The whole film had fantastic visuals in general. I thought it was pretty underrated.
You think you can head over to the obi wan series and try and fix that? 😂
Not just visually magnificent, also the sound - music by M83 and the sound design is just unforgettable. Just remember the drone sounds.
Cues to be taken from this movie:
If you ever have recurring dreams of a woman you've never met, well...
Cheers.
P.S. With the new Top Gun movie, guess nobody's laughing at Kosinski now.
the score is phenomenal. the bluray has a cut with just the music and visuals. magnificent
The guy who directed this also did Tron Legacy. Another very underrated si fi movie. The incredible soundtrack from M83 really stood out to me.
So you take the visuals of Tron Legacy, the relationship dynamics of Mr and Mrs Smith, and voila, you get Oblivion. I enjoyed all of them.
Tron Legacy is criminally underrated
Both those films had great visuals and score. If only Tron Legacy had a better script. They literally wrote the script around the score for that movie which explains a lot.
He also just directed Top Gun Maverick. So he's 3 for 3 for me.
my favorite part of the film.
This movie reminds me of another Sci fi masterpiece-Moon. I really loved this movie.
I'm OK with Joe Kosinski directing one movie every 2-3 years if he keeps the quality high and track record shining.
@@christopherhartford5066 Sure. It's not District 9 but I enjoyed Oblivion and found the twists satisfying if not entirely unpredictable. I've also seen it relatively recently and it's still good. I guess if it doesn't push your buttons then it's just not for you my dude.
my favorite movie ever, favorite tom cruise movie, favorite soundtrack, favorite visuals
favorite anything and everything. I’m surprised a movie like this even exists
At 42 seconds he is looking at drone 166 and there is a drawing on the drone of what looks like a man standing over a face. I have never noticed that before. This movie is so damn good.
I regret not seeing it in theaters. Rented it digitally and watched it like 4 times. It was so good.
Agreed but I’d bet money her snappa smells like Cheerios
She sure was.
She solidified my appreciation for beautiful redheads.
"Theirs 2 things that can never stay hidden forever, the moon, and the truth."
And if you look to the stars in this movie, the truth of the story's plot is staring you right in the face.
Yeah in dozens of movies with the same twist.
@@jeffk464 original robocop was junk? Maybe the sequels, those were bad.
@@jeffk464 It's not that ALL movies made in the "good old times" were great, they just weren't over-the-top race-swapping, gender-swapping woke, or political messaging. If there were messages they were subtle and secondary to the story. Now they're in your face, and in some cases seem to be the only point.
@@kenjifox4264 I have to agree. The first Robocop was a fun movie. Not my absolute favorite movie, but fun nonetheless. I can't remember if I ever saw any of the sequels, so I guess that tells you what I thought of those.
JON!
"Visually Oblivion is a gorgeous film to look at"
>that shot
I see what you did there Drinker
👌
I can watch this movie over and over and I'm still very impressed. The music soundtrack is excellent.
About time this film started getting some credit 🙌🏼🙌🏼
This is, by far, my favorite modern film! Thank you for giving it some much needed credit! Also, the unique synth/orchestral score amazing to listen on its own!
One of my alltime favorite sci fi films. I watch it every few years, and always find entertainment, and peace.
One of my favorite Tom Cruise movies. Minority report (and edge of tomorrow) is a masterpiece .
So she was Cypher basically?
Yeah, i keep coming back to this one over the years. Same with Edge of Tomorrow.
Ignore critics.
As Ernest Hemingway put it,
“Critics are men who watch a battle from a high place then come down and shoot the survivors.”
I recommend the movie called "Moon".. an awesome movie that has similar themes but i feel the execution is better
@@hadriangonzalez607 moon is good, more of a slow burn though. Definitely worth watching.
It honestly plays out like a twilight zone episode and I dig it. Even if it can be predictable it’s still satisfying.
The visuals in this movie are outstanding, from deserted landscapes to small holes and caves... Ohhh yes, and the SFX and score... Epic!
One of my favourite films of the last 20 years. I count favourite by how many time I've watched it, excellent film, completely rewatchable.
