For those who don't know. The Greek inventor Archimedes was from Syracuse (Siracusa) on the Island of Sicily. Rome decided they needed to take the city during the Second Punic War. Archimedes, about 75 at the time, is largely credited with the year-long defense of the city by means of his inventions. These included a crane that lifted Roman ships from the water and some type of light magnification using lenses that set Roman ships on fire from a distance. Wow, they killed Mutt in Vietnam? That's beyond lame.
Edit: For those who believe that I think soldiers dying in war is lame, I admit I was unclear in my statement.
I meant I am pointing out the fact that they brushed off the death of Indiana's ONLY SON and we don't get a real moment to figure out how he even felt about him or how his death would shape the character beyond "I'm now grumpier".
If you are going to kill off Mutt, at least have the death of his only son mean something? Especially if this is his (presumed) FINAL outing.
And I have a hunch that it was done so the only person he could even realistically "pass the torch" off to is Phoebe.

You know who I would have picked for an older female co star? Sigourney Weaver. She's in her 70's, and she still did a ton of physical training and labor for Avatar 2. Here's a quote from her about it:
"I don’t voice this, because I know that I’ll get teased mercilessly about what a wuss I am, but I think that everyone enjoys working with Jim because he does demand so much. On Avatar: The Way of Water, I was older than a lot of the other people, and we had to do a lot of parkour. We had to do burpees. We had to do freediving. Don’t you love these jobs where you have to learn some really outlandish thing that you keep with you for the rest of your life? Freediving, especially, I’m grateful that we spent a year doing that."
She commands respect, and she puts in the work behind the scenes to deliver the best performance possible. If this movie came with a better script, I think she'd be a worthy co star.

Yeah they completely forgot or ignored how the magical stuff worked in their previous Indy movies. What really made Indy movies stand out from generic real-world-but-with-magic is that it was all pretty subtle and never clearly explained.
You never had a wizard say "I cast fireball", you had ancient biblical stuff like the Arc or the Holy Grail, ancient occult magic stones in Temple of Doom, hell even the aliens in Crystal Skull were hardly explained at all. With all these "magical/fantastic" objects the viewer didn't really care about how or why they were made since it could as well have been God or a (super)natural phenomenon.
But directly saying "this historical figure crafted this device in the middle of a battle to save his and his armies' asses"... that's just... *no* it's wrong. It directly breaks the charm of the previous movies and goes against everything that this franchise established. (So it falls in line with the rest of the movie doing its best to desecrate Indy's rotting corpse.)

I was on a flight a week ago and decided to watch The Last Crusade, one of my favorite films of all time. Throughout the film, Indiana Jones is equal parts the clever hero and the bumbling fool, there are so many moments where Sean Connery gets to make him look like an idiot. But then, there are plenty of moments where that is reversed and Sean Connery gets to be the butt of the joke, and at the end of the day it's their combined wit and skill that gets Indy through the traps. Nobody is consistently better or worse than the other, everyone has their moment of triumph and failure, and throughout the film it is consistently always fun. But then you have a movie like this, where the failures are one-sided and the tone is bitter and spiteful.

He’s sad about his friends being dead but honors their memory by carrying on with their work. He stumbles into a prisoner of war camp and finds mutt held for over a decade. Barely recognizable. Short round breaks him out and they have adventures fleeing North Vietnamese Army troops. Doesn’t even really what relic short round is looking for. The movie will focus on family and never giving up. Towards the end short round gets knocked down the hat flies off, mutt picks it up the iconic music hits hard he puts on the hat and kicks everyone’s ass. The end.

It's indicative of how Hollywood views it's audience (those who've aged with the characters), and how they're marketing toward the younger generation. As with any cultural revolution, those in power and wanting more have to destroy the previous culture, and have the current generation hate the prior generation.

The thing is though, the woke generation, they're going to age so badly. Most of them have no character. Old generations were forged by fire, survived wars, experiences shaped them. When they aged, they aged with a lifetime of character forming events.
These new generations all their arrogance comes from ideology and the fact that they're young and not old.
It's going to be a horror show when these young people reach old age having not had any root, any character, any values. When their whole sense of self is built on not being old and being young and trendy and more "enlightened" than those old "bigots", old age is going to hit them like a freight train.

I pretty much figured that they’d kill off Indy’s son. Because we all know that a story would take place in the 60s or 70s, and Nam was going on. So unless Mutt was able to finish school with high marks Nam was going to get him via the draft. But we all know that shouldn’t have happened and this is the end of the franchise. Because honestly we will need a new team and owners of Lucasfilm to rewrite or completely rebuild their franchises. SW kicking off with hopefully Lucas’s planned sequel trilogy that would erase the Disney trilogy, and Indiana Jones being completely rebooted with new actors (few I see can pick up the role, but Chris Pratt I see could do it and be a good successor to the role, but he will have to be very brutal with holding his beliefs and morals against the movie makers as to protect the future of the franchise from sjw nonsense.)
Let us all hope that eventually other movies are made with similar themes and ideas to that of the original Indy movies, ones that fill the shoes of what came before and do their best to bring back the classic adventure genre that is sorely missed.

They actually screwed up the timing a bit as far as Mutt being drafted to fight in Vietnam. Crystal Skull was set in the mid-late ‘50s, and Mutt was supposed to be 17-18 in that movie. The new movie is set in 1969, so he’d be at least in his late 20s and too old to be drafted (the cutoff was 26 in Vietnam). He would have to have volunteered.

I think one of the worst things I hate seeing in movie sequels is when the previous movie ends on such a good and happy note, especially with the protagonist and their love interest getting together, and then the next movie they’ve broken up in between movies. I HATE that trope, if it is one, and to know that Indy 5 opens up with Marion divorcing him and that their son died is such a massive punch to the gut. At least Crystal Skull for all its flaws ended on a happy ending with Indy and Marion getting married when we haven’t seen her since Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 as a way to finally put the character and the series to rest, maybe even ignite a sorta young Indiana Jones future with his son inheriting the iconic hat and namesake for his own legacy, but NOPE! Darth Kennedy is not only hellbent on destroying the Skywalker legacy, she wants to destroy Indy’s too.

I can just imagine the "creative" team sitting around a whiteboard coming up with things that are quintessential to the Indy movies, but not understanding a single one of them. "He needs to be chasing a magical item." No, he needs to be pursuing an item that has been touched by the hand of God...there needs to be that religious connection that shows Indy is fighting for the side of good in looking for this item, as opposed to the villains who want to pervert the power God gave these items. "He needs a strong independent woman who is a match for him." No, he needs a woman who is physically beautiful and fierce, but who needs Indy. She also needs to be seduced by his charms as the film goes on and it leads to her lowering her defences. "Need to kill Mutt cos people hated him/problems with Shia." No, people disliked the film itself but you could very easily mould Mutt in to a likeable companion, recast if there's issues with Shia, or even omit him from the film without killing him offscreen like Newt in Alien 3. "We need to make jokes about how old he is." No, that's an old cliche and works against the idea of a hero we all adore. They see what came before without understanding a single aspect of it.

This opened the door for the Femi-Nazis to rush in and take over the franchise. If what Chris was saying about the first 20 minutes is true and that it would’ve been a good movie on it’s own, then it could have worked as Indy telling it as a bedtime story to his grandson and the ending of the film would have been a grateful Mutt returning home from the Vietnam War and embracing his son and father.
Maybe you can have Phoebe Waller Bridge as a British Spy investigating the Dial from within the Reich and you also reign in her worse qualities by 80% and there you have it, a semi-decent Indiana Jones movie that ends as a good send-off to his legacy but of course that only works in a world where KK wasn’t in charge.
