Loved that, respect for putting it together. The scene in London was massive in 84-85 under the influence of Mr Allen and the films from the US, even Our Price stocked a few import electro 12's although we mostly had to get them from the independents. The All-Stars killed it back then but from 86 onwards 'writing' was the more prominent b-boy discipline in the Capital, at least that's how it seemed, loads of people at school had a tag and did graff, whereas only a few of us had been in breaking crews. As the music progressed from electro to hip hop it really blew up in 1987 and the fashion and dancing changed also, we were heavily influenced by the dancers at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, letting off crazy routines to Jennifa, Letter to the Better and Calm Down. Plus house music blew up at the same time and lots of former hip hop heads and b-boys made the switch. Respect for representing the UK and holding it down for so long, I hadn't realised quite how influential you guys were!

The integrity we maintained to get this film made (across 9 years of ups and downs) directly relates to the integrity of the crew its about as well as the other Bboy Mercenaries that kept breakin alive across the world... Now look at it... Olympics, sponsorship etc... There definitely needs to be more recognition of these "survivors" and that is why we made the film... Cheers

Yes it was a beast! Some of the interviews I just don’t think you’d get now.. I mean I just shot some of them with Nathan on a small DV camcorder... I think that’s why people relaxed and told the truth... I noticed when guys were doing interviews with people with like a crew and a boom they didn’t look relaxed and didn’t give much up.. we kept it casual.. I remember doing the Ivan one with Nath in a broom cupboard, as we couldn’t find anywhere else quiet enough at the gig.. We killed ourselves to get a lot of that stuff.. I had to track down ALL the original tapes..I had all my camcorder footage from the Harewood restored.. Cost me a fortune..Ha ha.. I love it’s rawness.. Hats off to Charlie for finishing it...

I couldn't B-Boy for shit, but love, love, LOVE this! Makes me wish I was just a couple of years older so that I could have at least been around the scene a little more in the 80's. Part of my love for this is the not caring what the majority considered 'cool', as it reminds me of my own love of Hip Hop... The early 90's arrived & virtually everyone I knew ran off to get pilled up in clubs & aircraft hangars, while I was left pretty much on my own listening to the likes of DJ Renegade with Blade, S.O.N., etc, etc. To this day I'm still rocking bucket hats, graff tees, faded Carhartts, etc, & still representing the culture in my own little way. Big up Second To None & the makers of this documentary... It's guys like you that have given me so much pleasure over the years, & clearly still continue to do so.

Absolutely awesome. Such a well put together documentary, and I recognize some of this footage. I downloaded it on my windows 98 computer using dial up internet. I even did a school project on breaking and in class I had footage of the UK B-boy Championships from a clip I recorded on TV here in Canada. I presented it to the class while explaining the little bit of knowledge I had about breaking at the time, and I did very well on the project. I even threw down a bit and I had only a year max of breaking at the time. I wasn't great but the class loved it. Haha. Second 2 None respect.

Thanks it took me 9 years to edit... It was a group effort between me, Tony and Nathan... We really dug for as much first gen footage as poss... It was super difficult to create a coherent narrative with interviews and archive... We are all happy that it is straight up and does justice to all those, not just STN, who were active at the time who helped keep breakin from death... It would vae been great to include Japan etc but we just had to tell the story as it happened to STN.... Thanks again for the appreciation.

Hey Dan... We really appreciate the kind words and appreciation... Trust me when I say this was a hard film to make... In fact the way we made it and the trials and tribulations that it brought on us as well as the blood sweat and years... (9 of them!)... is fitting for such a legendary hardcore crew but also bearing in mind this untold story of an essential era which, as we say, is the missing link... We kinda aimed for a European "Freshest Kids"... and we fully knew the responsibility we had on our shoulders to come correct and present it honestly, warts n all... Real Bboys/ Bgirls appreciate that shit cuz its in their blood from battling as well as testing themselves every step of the way to become the best they can be.... Again Dan, thank you very much for your kind words... We are so so glad this film continues to be recieved in the way in which we intended it... Best regards... Charlie

Ever felt like you've been airbrushed out of your own past life? I've only watched this once before and I have to say, my feelings were hurt. Now I watch it again years later, just some plain re-invention of the past going on. It's such a shame that everyone felt the need to take such an odd approach to the past in this documentary, and I still don't understand the motivation for doing so. I still get "people" calling me out as a fake to this day because of this film. I have actually stopped mentioning my past as a Second to None member because this film is apparently proof that it never happened. One thing that I know about Hip Hop culture is that it's very staunch about its early history. This film falls very short of that approach as far as basic research of the facts and just respect for an old friend and a crew member, its plain insulting and I now see it as a personal attack. I was DJing last week at an event with a Japanese guy, we got into a discussion about stuff, STN came up and the guy just told me outright that I was never in STN. Far from the first time this has happened. REPERATIONS needed. This film is following me around in the worst way possible.

Your comments are jealous, delusional bollocks..
You were approached TWICE to be in this film and never got back to Charlie both times.. You were in STN for a grand total of four months! Four months! Can you let that sink in.. You were there at the start when Steve Kerr came up with the idea to create a super crew from all the best breakers and poppers in Bournemouth. Your involvement was to come up with the name and that’s it! That was in August of 1985 and you were gone by the November. I have never heard or spoken to you since that time 38 years ago. There’s no reinvention of the past. This is the history that I told Charlie about how this all unfolded and how nearly everyone else gave up including you! A history of which 99.99% you weren’t there for! Your reinventing and Altering the past to fit into your own agenda. An agenda that’s based on regret and sadness that you stepped away early from something, but didn’t make it to the glorious end. Oh and by the way you were a bit shit aswell mate, that’s why Steve asked me to join because I was miles better than you at popping at that time. Forget breaking I never even saw you do a mill or a six step. What is all this shite you’ve written all about? You’re obviously angry at something and it’s not just this film. Classic case of sour grapes Frazer..

Hi Gil… Thanks for the racist message… Those that made this film (I directed it) and those that this film is about have nothing but love and respect for the architects… I mean why wouldn’t we?! We were introduced to this culture by black/Puerto Rican crews like RSC, NYCBs, Mag Force as well as films like Flashdance , wild style and Beat street… and their tours as well as NYC Rap Tour in 82, some tunes and some KISS and WBLS tapes… That’s when/how we got it - through the media - and we had no choice about that but we got it nonetheless and acted upon it with love and a fierce energy… You were the originals and for that we are forever in your debt!! BUT… You have it all wrong bro… No one is taking anything away from those generations… or whitewashing it… This film is about OUR generation although the architects are mentioned and included in the indepth interviews… Bro, it’s obvious you haven’t bothered to even watch the film cuz if you had you’d see that those it’s about and the shit that they are doing pushed the dance (and so culture) further and that is beneficial for EVERYONE, that is if they truly love it… And this film is set at a particular point in time when NYC had moved on and were sleeping on breakin… not saying it wasn’t in your hearts, I’m just saying people weren’t practising and pushing it like folks were overseas… FACT… It was the European and overseas generation as well as LA in the shape of Orco and Air Force that communicated via VHS with the Australians who made legendary Hype magazine which then connected Second to None and Battle Squad and Maurizio and Tuf Tim (UK RSC)… and it was that group of people that then travelled back to NYC in 87 onwards and only really found Kwikstep who was still training and busking… but then connected with others and inspired them to start training again… Honestly dood you’d LEARN all this if you watched the film… Do yourself a favour… Culture moves on bro whether you like it or not… luckily we approached the dance it in a pure, hardcore NYC fashion and documented that in a fucking stylish dope heavy weight doc that Israel who directed Freshest Kids cited as a masterpiece (We wanted to make a European/overseas Freshest Kids so his words were very appreciated), We pulled no punches and asked the difficult questions… showing time stamped dope video evidence of what these people did and the battles and jams that travelled around the globe on 10th generation vhs tapes… It doesn’t matter if those folks were white or purple with mint green zigzags on their balls - it’s about character, heart and work ethic… SKILLS… and making sure the originators get their props and the history is told correctly…. Which is exactly what we did…. But without OUR generation of various shades, colours, creeds, nationalities, shapes and sizes of people… Breakin would have died… FACT… It’s a shame Gil that you focus on the differences between people and not how hip hop culture has brought people from different backgrounds, classes, countries onto a common ground… and progressed mutual understanding and respect… I mean not in your case clearly but in most cases… So many of us whiteys learned about black culture and black lives working back from breaks and lyrics and at a very early age too, is that not a positive thing? So you see “white boys doing a documentary” isn’t just some white boys, it’s the best fucking bboys in the world at the time talking about a time when they were the kings… Yes THEY WERE THE KINGS at that time and it is them you have to thank for the dance still being around… and instead of being ignorant you should do as Alien Ness said in the film and bow ya head and give thanks and recognise whatever contributions these folks have made and also the dope generous filmmakers like myself that dedicated 9 years to get it 100% tight and accurate for the benefit of those it’s about as well as the next generation and then gave it away for FREE…
      Yours unapologetically,
      Charlie Marbles
      (Bboy and Director)
