    By January 2019, after 7 world cup seasons, Defago had never been on a downhill podium (he had a few in SuperG). Then he won Wengen and Kitzbühel within a week. One year later he got Olympic gold in downhill. Before retiring he added Bormio, for a total of 4 downhill wins. Now, 4 wins is not a lot, many people have more than that, but when those 4 are the most important race there is, and the 3 most iconic courses in alpine skiing, you can definitely speak of quality over quantity.

    Miller's run for bronze at 25:55, Svindal silver 43:50, Defago gold 48:50. Interesting that all medalists were totally under the radar coming to Vancouver. But years of experience, lots of downhill success in the past and excellent giantslalom skills worked for them. Technical knowledge was needed for a medal so the classic downhillers like Cuche, Kroell and Walchhofer who were top ranked favorites didn't really stand a chance. Tightest downhill ever, medalists separated by only 0.09 second.

    I was not a downhill racer but I was a downhill skier. It seems that the downhill race is more like a giant slalom now. I (vaguely) recall downhill races in the 70 and 80's where the skiers had few gates and went where the quick line was.

      @donnelly5757 8 лет назад +3

      +pitot1988 After looking over some race results and their venues, average speeds for the whole run can vary from 61-67 mph plus. Considering this includes the start and having to make turns, it's no wonder why some call this the original extreme sport. It's one thing to go 80-100 mph straight, it's another to survive a turn at 60 -70 mph, which is why I'd much rather watch and partake in downhill ski racing than speed skiing.

    • @pierremarcjette7412
      @pierremarcjette7412 5 лет назад +1

      Billy Johnson was clocked at 160km/hr down the sewer. Part of this track which was considered the 3rd favorite on tour. This is the Olympic so very sanitized course, so more racers from different country can do it. And by the way the world record for speed on skis is a bit over 250km/hr.

      Ski race suits are not skin tight spandex, they are fairly thick and padded....ski racers are generally pretty skinny and ropey people.

    • @michaell6435
      @michaell6435 6 лет назад +1

      No Downhill suits aren't padded, just the ones for the slower disciplines like Slalom or GS. Downhill skiers need to resist a lot of forces especially in the turns due to the high speed. Thats why they also need to be quite bulky, especially their legs and core muscles

    • @__red_lightning__2502
      @__red_lightning__2502 5 лет назад

      Ski racers are not skinny at all younger people are but thoes guys at that level have no fat all muscle

    • @michaell6435
      @michaell6435 5 лет назад +1

      Neil Baker i dont know if you ever wore a Downhill suit, but if you did you would know that they are indeed skin tight. Racers even say they are their 2nd skin

    • @keirfarnum6811
      @keirfarnum6811 4 года назад

      Neil Baker
      Yes they are skin tight spandex. I have an old, black Descente suit in my closet right now. Generally we would only wear long underwear and a shirt under out “zoot suits” while racing. GS and slalom suits have some arm padding, but the SG/downhill suits had no padding at all.
