- Chaz shows you how to replace a home chandelier on a very high entryway ceiling. Do it yourself chandelier replacement or burned-out light bulb replacement without needing to hire an expensive contractor or rent scaffolding. Chaz shows you a way to rig-up the chandelier in the attic so you can lower-down yourself AND how to walk in your attic without falling through the ceiling drywall.

You saved my husband's life. I ordered a big chandelier online, and I told him he'd have to borrow a 24-foot ladder. It's really a stroke of luck that I saw your video before he borrowed it.
Walking around in the attic can also be dangerous so tell him to take his time and to lay down some planks to walk on. Thanks for watching. Good luck 👍🏼
Great thinking! I never thought of that. Just thought ladder ladder ladder. I have the same type of entry foyer and access in the attic. And I have a wife who bought a new chandelier because she didn’t like the old one. 🙄😊
Hardest part was busting apart the plastic receptacle box that’s in the attic that’s covering the chandelier connection and wires. I didn’t film because I wasn’t sure how smashing with a hatchet would look. Make sure the breaker is off that feeds your light and good luck!
I don't own a chandelier, hell, I live in an apartment but the video was awesome and I enjoyed it.
Thanks Chaz.
I’ll crack a beer to your awesome comment, glad you enjoyed.
Thank you! I’ve been looking at my light in the vestibule for a year 😱 never did your solution graze my brain! Genius! I could only see my lifeless body at the bottom of the ladder. I’m unstuck and unstoppable! Thank you!😊🙏🏻
Hard part is smashing the plastic receptacle box that houses the chandelier wires, I didn’t film this part because I used a hatchet after I drilled holes into the box like a brick of Swiss cheese and looked like a psychopath. Once the box is off you can unscrew your light from the bracket from the topside, make sure power /breaker off, wire is snipped and you have a rope tied to it to lower once undone. You can rig the chain to your new chandelier before pulling up. Good luck!
I love the way you setup the fail safe. Best to be safe not sorry.
I’m not lying when I tell you I was cackling during this video! You’re hilarious.
Thanks for watching and glad you got a laugh, just don’t get yourself electrocuted or fall through the ceiling! Good luck.
Dude, love your video. Cracked me up and taught me an amazing trick. Thanks.
Saw the wings jersey, immediately trusted you.
Bro you’re hilarious and informative at the same time! 😂👍🏽 I’m buying a house with the same setup.. ! So I’ll be revisiting this video soon! 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Haus! Read through some of my comments to other viewers, there are a few things that weren’t filmed that I discuss that may help you out, don’t get electrocuted and good luck!
Not code but not going to lie, pretty damn genius. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you so much for the idea! 👏👏👏
Good luck if you attempt and if you already tried hopefully it worked out!
that's very smart idea is safe and secure.
Smart. Love it!
This is such a great idea!!! Thanks so much!
Remember it’s not code, the hard part is smashing into plastic receptacle box that housed chandelier wires in attic, I didn’t film this part. I turned off power and drilled a bunch of holes into plastic box so it looked like Swiss cheese then I smashed it apart with a hatchet, make sure the breaker to the light is off. Elevate your quick connects or house inside a receptacle box nailed to a vertical stud so you can easily access. Good luck!
@@ProjectswithChaz thank you Chaz! My challenge will be the base of the light. It's a 80 cm aluminum circle, with 11 wires hanging out of it...
Was looking for a video like this.
Wow I love your idea for future projects.!Unfortunately, the chandelier that I have needs to be screw to the ceiling too. Really great job 👏
There are still ways. Mine does too but I’m not thinking scaffolding is in my future.
You're awesome man! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant! As I stare at my super high ceiling fan
Hats Off,I loved it
Thanks DR, if you haven’t already subscribe to my channel and you’ll receive notifications of other whacky projects!
You are hilarious! Thank you for the tip!
My wife would classify it as sarcasm and lack of emotional intelligence, we agree to disagree. Thanks for watching!
Nod to the Stevie Y sweater! Cool video!
Thanks, Go Wings!
Great news idea !!!
As soon as I saw the Red Wings jersey on, I knew you were the guy.
Go Wings!
Amazing!
It's like the New Years Eve ball drop in reverse!
Thank you for this
You’re welcome, now don’t fall through your ceiling or burn down your house! Thanks for watching.
You are a genius!
I’d like to take credit but I actually got the idea from a RUclips video years ago and decided to shoot my own video with a few more details. Thanks for watching!
I love it. This is some sketchy ass shit but I suppose if it works it works. Good out of the box thinking
So far it’s holding up and no issues, I will post a comment on this project thread if it falls on anyone’s head or burns down the house. We rarely use the fixture but the hassle of swapping out was worth not listening to my wife complain about the old hideous light so win win. Thanks for watching!
@@ProjectswithChaz it is a very unique solution for sure. Good thinking
Love it! I'm actually going to do this today or tomorrow.
Great! Toughest part is removing/smashing light electrical box when you’re in the attic, I didn’t film this part because I wasn’t sure how it would end up. Make sure power off to your chandelier, smash box to gain access to wires and connection hardware of chandelier, I used a hatchet like a psycho but you can use whatever works. Remember the quick connects will not be code, if you sell your house you’ll have to hardwire back and screw an electrical box over where the chandelier connects to ceiling hole. Good luck!
LGRW! Great video! Genius!
Tackle your project like the champion Stevie Y and you’ll have no problems! Thanks for watching.
You da man! I'm on it!
Love it
fantastic!
Good luck if you attempt and thanks for watching!
Awesome. Save a lot of efforts. I hope there would be a kit for sale for this approach.
Thanks J Z, unfortunately the wire quick connections are not code, if and when I sell our house I’ll have to snip off quick connectors and connect wire-to-wire; seems Cra-Cra but that’s code for you.
@@ProjectswithChaz You just need to put the open junction in a mounted and enclosed junction box to meet code. Could have also used wire nuts instead of buying special quick connects.
Alternative thinking!
love it
Hahaha u are helpful and so funny too
I’ll try that with ceiling fan!
Damn this is genius
Every one needs a husband like this lol
My wife is on the fence with most of my projects, she’s glad the life insurance is in good standing. Thanks for watching!
LOL the wife impersonation got a like lol..
Inspiration from the Dice Man 🎲. Thanks for watching!
This is good. Will attempt something similar. Mystery question? How did you know not to use a bud lite in your video ? 😆
The only time I will willingly drink piss is if I’m stranded in the desert without water. Thanks for watching!
Well I be dang I have been looking a my old ghost looking chandelier for 12 years trying to figure out how to get that thing down from the foyer ceiling and it would have been a 1200 dollars install for a 300 dollar chandelier thanks dude
Take your time and good luck!
There are winch systems you can connect so that you can bring it up and down with a push of a button but good idea tho
Awesome. Fortunately our chandelier is easily pulled up by hand but that’s a great option for gigantic fixtures. Thanks for the comment!
I'm gonna crack 1 beer FIRST, just to take the edge off.
Hardest part is breaking the box that houses the wires, I didn’t film that part because I used a hatchet and looked like a psychopath. Good luck!
Plot twist. The wife doesn't like the angle of the light and demands it be square with the walls.
She can deal with it. If wife goes Karen on me I can easily rotate from above in attic to her desired angle.
Hi Chaz, thanks for the video. It has inspired me to attempt the same. Where do I find the quick connects for the wires? that seems like an easy solution for when we need the chandelier to travel down.
Michelle
***Not code but works like a champ*** You can buy at a local hardware or auto parts store. Make sure the wires aren’t touching anything when you connect and are live, maybe elevate by hanging from a stud or enclose in a junction box that you can simply open to access quick connections when needed. Good luck!
@@ProjectswithChaz Thanks!
@@ProjectswithChaz My chandelier has a rectangle base and is being connected to the ceiling via 4 screws, how do I convert this to meet at the center to hook on to a pulley? Any ideas?
Thanks!
@@alokmichellesudhakar4104 it’s hard to figure out without seeing your light and situation. Can you attach something to the base that’s strong enough to connect your rope/chain to for hoisting up and connecting to an anchor point in the attic? I’m not a professional, just a DIY guy, proceed cautiously and good luck!
Chaz do appreciate you taking the time to make suggestions. I am attaching a link to the light. This part is intended to sit flush on the ceiling and anchored by 4 screws
I was thinking of using cables from the 4 holes to a center point where the pulley cable hook can be attached

Once again thanks for your feedback. Have a wonderful weekend!
Are you related to Michael Keaton, cause he would have done the same thing.Pretty Kool.I am about to do the same thing with a Kichler light and the same frigging altitude. And your attic looks like mine.Down in Florida.Once again are you sure your not related to Keaton???.Good Job and great idea.Thanks.Ray the Pilot,USAF,SAC,Nam Vet.
No relation to BatMan / Beetlejuice, in my younger years I looked like David Byrne from the Talking Heads. My dad was in the Navy on a sub, he wasn’t in Nam but dug-in on Miami Beach during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Thanks for your service and watching! Ps- don’t fall through your ceiling.
Chaz, I am more interested in how did you remove your existing chandelier from attic? Did you have to cut the box rod in the attic? Does the upside down U clip that sits on rod, slides out? I do not think it is possible to remove it without cutting the box rod. I have a 20 feet tall foyer ceiling where one ugly chandelier installed by Builder, which has all bulbs died 4 years back. Changing bulbs is also impossible for me. First challenge is to remove the old chandelier. I have checked that in attic, it is attached to a Box fan Rod, which connects between 2 joists of 2x4. I can access the Rod from attic. I can disengage the rod from joists,. But the U like clip which sits on rod (reverse U) is attached to the Box where wires goes in and the chandelier connects from bottom (with center Nut and 2 side nuts). I think it is extremely difficult to remove the Box from Box Rod in the attic. The access to remove nuts is from below i.e. LONG LONG Tall Tall Ladder. or Scaffold rental. any way thanks for a very informative video.
Hello Prakash, I turned off the breaker that goes to light so no power to chandelier, took a hatchet to the receptacle box up in the attic and smashed plastic off from above chandelier bracket. Tied a rope to the chandelier hardware and unscrewed from above to free chandelier and lowered down. Chandelier’s are all different but the hardware should be similar. The hardest part was breaking the plastic receptacle, I drilled a bunch of holes into it like Swiss cheese then smashed to pieces with hatchet, wear safety goggles and gloves! Good luck.
It’s hard to determine your set up, if you don’t think you can duplicate what I did safely you should call a pro.
@@ProjectswithChaz Thank you very much for the tips. and such a quick reply. I am going to use all this information in next 2 days. I hate breathing in that attic air. but it must be done. :-) I visualized and prepared tool kit bag with all the stuff that i need. Going to run a extension wire from other room to up in attic so i can get good light. after killing circuit breaker for attic, that will be handy. Also I am thinking running a long metal hanging chain with new Chandelier, so when i have to change bulb next time, it should be at possible height.
@@prakash27502 wear a mask!
@@ProjectswithChaz I am scary cat, won't even take a risk on ladder above certain height. so i will be taking all the precautions possible. butb thanks for the safety note. I agree that this is not something simple DIYers can do. This is difficulty level 10 (on scale of 1-10) DIY fix.
Do you have a link to this light fixture?
Not the specific fixture but my wife bought at a local light store in Ann Arbor MI: www.grosselectric.com/
Go Wings!
Hells Yes 🙌🏻
Can you put mine up?
I would be stealing your joy of self accomplishment if I did, have someone help you, YOU CAN DO IT! Don’t fall through the ceiling, electrocute yourself or burn down the house. Thanks for watching!
That's exactly the size of my foyer and the size of the ceiling, but I don't have an attic.
That stinks, not sure how the chandelier is attached, probably a mounting plate and screws/nuts like a bedroom ceiling light. If you can’t reach with the tallest folding ladder 🪜 from Lowes or Home Depot you’ll have to contact a lighting contractor. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Don’t you need a junction box for those electrical connections
Whenever we sell the house I’ll probably get the wiring back to code, in the meantime the connection is fine and makes life easier when I need to change a bulb or dust. Thanks for watching!
"Just like you follow the money in corruption in politics..."! 🤣its true, though!
Wires next to insulation…. I hope you covered them. Fire in your sleep is the last thing you want my guy
They are up in the air so no worries, thanks for watching!
Omg! Ok it’s worse than mine!
Fyi never do this call a liscenced electrician with scaffolding.
It’s been up for awhile with no problems. If people feel uncomfortable walking in their attic then they should call an electrician. Thanks for watching!
Quick connect? Lollllz
That’s one of many steps that make this project MAGICAL. Thanks for watching!
Stevie Y. would have hired an electrician! But seriously, nice job. Go Wings.
Steve is too busy with his YzerPlan (creating the next HockeyTown dynasty) to do home repairs!!! Good luck if you attempt and thanks for watching.
Uhhh… I like the entertainment quality of your video but… not so much the electrical work or the teaching the rest of the world how to do it wrong so much, but yes entertainment quality is there!
It works and no issues, not sure what more I could ask for, thanks for watching!
I hope this is a joke video. This is absolutely stupid and dangerous on so many levels. I can go in with a 16' stepladder and do the job in 1-2 hours without getting in the attic and destroying the light box that is SUPPOSED to be there. We also use the appropriate wire connectors not some radio shack shit that is meant for 12V DC. Please don't encourage other people to do this.
Working like a champ so far, if you’re not into it keep scrolling the interwebs is a big place.
YEA THAT ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE A ATTIC SPACE BUT MOST OF THE TIMES THERE'S NO ATTIC SPACE !
Then this video is of little help to those without an attic. I’d rent an extra large folding step ladder and do it myself in that situation, good luck and thanks for watching!
that's very smart idea is safe and secure.
