Worked hard, payed rent, bills, food, etc, saved for a 50s tribute 2016. Worth all the patience, saving and effort. A special guitar, amazing bang per buck. Anyone sayin these are cheap and all that crap can try living on a real world budget, save for one of these and then get a grip on reality. These are fantastic guitars.
Indeed. Never could afford a true Gibson Les Paul Standard, but was lucky enough to have a little spare money when the 2016 Tributes were launched. Got the 50's Tribute (no High-Performance) in Honeyburst and love it a lot. Sounds great through my Blackstar HT-R1 Tan Bronco small stack. Working man's Les Paul, and found on Reverb that it sells used for more than it costed brand new these days. Not meaning that I'm ever gonna sell it.
+Rob Chapman Mr.chappers can you share with us your favorite blues guitar players? you and the captain always play some of the best opening intros in RUclips and I want to be able to follow up on that which I have. Everytime you guys play your chops me and my brother copy your playing and we are always wondering who your favorite guitarists in blues are? Thank you and much love for your band. 😄
hello there captain n chappers scratchplates just look sad! I love your channel, one of my absolute favourites on yt! i would love a "history" type video/series, where you talk about brands history, materials and when and why things happend, its really fun to hear you talk so passionately about all things guitars and i think that would be great! maybe you have done this, but i havent stumbled across any so i thought id mention it. have a wonderful day fellows and do keep uup the good work!!
You and the others have such a GOOD TIME with all your videos and that's great. I enjoy your information that is presented in a relaxed atmosphere and hope you continue making them. Thank You.
I'm going to repeat the majority of the comments and say that Lee's playing has really gone to another level. Not in any way saying that he was rubbish before. Could listen to those sweet bluesy licks all day! Seen that he is thinking about studying Jazz too...
the answer to the question/statement about gibson and marshall going together really well, I'm surprised no one has said that gibson and marshall go together like Chappers and the Captain. love your videos guys. keep up with the awesome work. rock on guys!!
Ya’lls review of these and other guitars and amps have helped me out in my decision making, thank you! I just picked up a ‘60s tribute high performance from ‘16 in the satin black, and I love it! Rocking those p90s through my laney gh50r 212
A Les Paul isn't a Les Paul without a scratchplate. Good enough for Jimmy Page...good enough for me!! Would love to see a review of a higher end Epiphone Les Paul vs the lower end Gibson Les Paul
No scratch plate in Appetite style looks better and meaner. I bought a Les Paul Studio '50s Tribute T (Satin Vintage) Traditional 2016 (sorry not in UK but living in Singapore) a few days ago after watching this video on this highly informative & entertaining channel. Yes, the guitar really sings by itself from clean to dirty with or without plugging in. Thanks guys.
Go team lose the scratch plate... lol! Nice vid guys, personally I would never ever buy an LP style guitar with anything other than humbuckers but I must admit the P90 one doesn't sound bad! And thanks for plugging 'em into a Marshall... ;)
Capt10. Your guitar playing is getting better and better with every new video. Chappers' is more my style of playing but gotta love those tasty tasty blues leads :)
+Anthony Benanti Personally, I think an ESP EC series is a better choice if you want no scratch plate and tbh, in every way really. For give or take $1000 I definitely have gotten guitars in the past decade I really would say are high quality than a Gibson of the same price range . Now that it's 2016, spending the amount of money for a new Gibson at what they cost, on top of the level of mediocrity their quality control has sunk to seems like the buyer hasn't done enough research into other guitar companies. I think a lot of people still believe Gibson is like gold standard of quality still where you can pick up pretty much any guitar of theirs and be confident it's going to great, which sadly is not the case anymore and every year they continue to cut more and more corners to where this year I'd probably think buying an Epiphone at half the price of a Gibson, and spending a bit of money upgrading it would be the wiser choice. I'm really not trying to enrage anyone and if you like Gibson's and buy them, I don't judge. People are going to like what they like and they have that choice, however it bums me out that to me that within the past decade especially, Gibson has really seemed to have lost a lot of pride in their instruments quality and seem very entitled to charge an arm and a leg for anything with Gibson on the head stock regardless of it's quality.
both, a scratch plate(epi bonnamassa goldtop burstbuckers 2/3) no scratch plate (gibson 2013 LpJ 4904/498T) GREAT REVIEW Chappers i want to buy one of your guitars.....
Did you get the 2016 Flying V in the end? I remember that you wanted to sell your Les Paul for it; if you did buy it then it would be cool to see a short vlog or video about it. Perhaps even how it compares to your other Flying V
LEE! when are you gonna teach us that chord thing you always do at 9:10???!?!? I've left several comments about it in your instruction vids and they all got upvotes and agree comments. The people have voted, and the want to learn how to play the Captain Riff!
+Event Horizon Productions 1. Bar the 5th fret on D, G and B strings with your index finger and strum them. 2. Hammer-on the G string to 6th fret with your middle finger. 3. Bar the 7th fret of D, G and B strings with your ring finger. 4. Repeat steps 1 and 2. 5. Put your middle finger on G string 7th fret and index finger on B string 6th fret and slide them up two frets (so G is on 9th fret and B is on 8th fret)
What about the Studio Faded series? £100 less than these but with Burstbucker Pros (same as the Standard I think) this year, still a 2-pickup, carved maple top LP model? Also, pro scratch-plate.
Yes, i would like to see them play with that model, along with that nice SG with the mini humbuckers, wich look sick with their mini bat wing scrach plate. Chappers and Cap, please show us what these two babies can do!
I got a 2016, black version, but in 2017, so quite well discounted. As Lee, says, compared to my standard, I just want to play this all the time! I don't need to worry if I scratch it, drop it or whatever, I can just enjoy it for what it is!
These both sound fantastic especially with those Marshall amps. As far as pickguards/scratchates go, it depends on the guitar. Some Les Pauls look great without one, some look odd without one. I think it depends on it's color, binding or no binding & is it a carved top or a flat top Les Paul.
It all really depends on how the LP looks as to whether a scratch plate would look good on it or not. I've got a 2014 LPJ Pro and a scratch plate would just look silly on it. In fact, on my guitar, the wear marks actually make the guitar look really cool too, same goes for my SG.
I love my new 2020 Standard 60's but I do wish it had the soloist fingerboard like this model. Love the wider feel of the 2 models I currently have from 2013.
I'm pro pickgaurd/scratchplate and i think having that on the guitar compliments it, whether its the color and/or style of the guitar ,it gives it an extra effect to the guitar itself
I'm for the pick guard (scratch plates are fitted to Tele and Strat types). My right hand moves all over, but at times I steady it with the little finger on the surface - as did Gary Moore, amongst others. On flat tops like Strats, this is fine, but on arched/carved tops the strings are typically further from the surface, and the pick guard fills the gap. I agree they sometimes spoil the looks, but function beats form, always.
PRO Pickgaurd. Big time. Give me a nice cream pickgaurd and zero pinch harmonics all day long;-) Side note to Rob: Challenge to do and entire video with no pinch harmonics at all. Can you do it;-)
At 4:00 they show 6 different colors-- in Canada we can only get 4 (ebony, gold, vintage burst and honey burst) What are the other colors here? I see two are black and two are... honey burst?!?!!? Two different kinds of burst for sure! What is the color on the far right? Which one is really "honey burst?"
Was eating pizza while watching this. Pizza with mayonaise. MUST TRY BAKED BEANS. Also, anyone who takes their scratchplate off their lae paul, they clearly don't need their toes or ears either, so we'll just pull those off ^^
I always preferred em with the scratchplate, but I bought a standard where you have to drill the holes yourself if you want it to put it on. Not a hope i'm drilling holes into my LP standard for a bit of plastic. But now I quite like it without.
when they have a nice flamed top i prefer them without the scrathplate, but the most of the time i like les paul with them rather than without. Great video by the way
Great Job gentlemen. Can you add any commentary on the neck profiles? I am trying to find the holy grail 59 rounded profile, and pay in 1959 $. My wife overheard me watching one of your reviews and commented, "do you really take advice from these guys?". In fact, I find your reviews to be top notch. Now back to your full out assault concerning the scratch plate issues! ill be Switzerland.
For those of you non-English speaking folks, the "scratch plate" he refers to is called a Pickguard.... Oh and before I watch, I LOVE my 50s T goldtop. Not being a wealthy guy, it's what I could afford and I don't regret buying it one bit. I think Gibson did a great job bringing its legendary quality to guys like myself, on a budget. Oh and pro-pickguard here. Just doesn't look les pauly without it.....
Lee you mentioned polishing out dings and Scratches. I have a 2000 Gibson 57 Goldtop with one ding spot on the front. Could you tell me how I can fix it, tt is a historic with nitro. if you cant tell me, how much do you charge?I don't mind a roughed up burst but I love the goldtop to be immaculate.Cheers Guys
Can you also review the Gibson Les Paul faded range as that is the true bottom of the range and has burstbuckers. I've just bought a black one and love it but would welcome your views!
My dad got me one those for my 18th birthday and it's the best thing ever
That's a wonderful present! Enjoy!
Dude I’m the same way wtffffff
4 years later, do you still have the guitar?
@@wiseguy9202 yes
@@courgeonaute That's cool. Just curious how these stand up to the test of time.

The Captain has grown a ton with his solo playing! Awesome job Captain! Great job on the intro solo - paired nicely with Chappers rhythm playing
I bought the 60's tribute in 2011 and it's become my go to guitar. Amazing value & highly recomended
The intro was the tastiest jam I've ever heard from you guys for a while!! DAMN GOOOOOD
And also I prefer to have a scratch plate to protect the clear coat on my LP but it looks hideous on a Zakk Wylde Custom :(
If a Les Paul is a plain solid color-Scratchplate
If a Les Paul has a very nice flame and nice burst color-No Scratchplate
Jimmy Page might have something to say about that...
Unless its a reissue...

Pro scratchplate! Can I still get a hug from you Rob if I ever meet you?
Of course :-)
+Rob Chapman If you come to Nepal I can be anywhere at Nepal for you to just hug.

Pro scratchplate ✋🏽
Careful he is kinda funny,,Watch your rear end..lol
Awesome tones and badass playing guys! And Lee's mean face was so damn funny
I am in love with that 60's tribute les paul.
have to say I'm with the captain on the scratch plates
ah, when that scratchplate came off.. Magic! I'm with you Rob!
hello there captain n chappers
scratchplates just look sad!

have a wonderful day fellows and do keep uup the good work!!
I just pulled the trigger on one of these gold tops. Such a good day..
A raise to whoever edits these, please! Hilariously well done!
Pro Scratchplate/Pickguard here. A Les Paul without it just looks wrong. It's like a pocket square on a nice suit. Just makes it look smarter.
Whoever edited this episode - I love you.

For me the whole scratchplate thing really depends on the colour.
ye. like if its a really posh figured top and a contemporary finish then no scratchplate but i love it on classic colors
The captain is absolutely kicking arse on that guitar. Brilliant playing.
A Les Paul isn't a Les Paul without a scratchplate. Good enough for Jimmy Page...good enough for me!!
Would love to see a review of a higher end Epiphone Les Paul vs the lower end Gibson Les Paul
Me too
Yes!!!! That would be awesome!!
Come to the year 2020 they have a few of those videos.
In 12:55 My Soul screams to the Rock n Roll sound of this amazing P90 atitude!
Scratch plate on for life! Btw, nice solo towards the end Lee
The neck joint has finally been slimmed down to be like the axcess. Yesss I might go buy one!
man, i love Lee's chord phrasing! so much to learn from watching you fellas play, cheers!
Pro-scratch plate here. It is neat that the high-performance version just pops off though.
Pro scratch-plate team !

You should do on a short Video the LP studio faded and the Mini HB SG!!!
What about the 2016 Les Paul Studio Faded series of guitars? You hinted at making a video of those in the studio les paul video you did.
You're missing the Gibson Studio Faded???
Yay! Blues noodling! You can't possibly get tired of it.
Go team lose the scratch plate... lol! Nice vid guys, personally I would never ever buy an LP style guitar with anything other than humbuckers but I must admit the P90 one doesn't sound bad! And thanks for plugging 'em into a Marshall... ;)
Going to see about getting the 50s tribute in honeyburst tuesday. Excited.
i tried out the 60s tribute yesterday through a blackstar artisan, sounded beautiful.
I just recently got a 2016 Firebird T and it's amazing. It's become my main guitar with my new band. You have to review one you'll love it!
omg, best intro play ever... capt you're the best
5:42, the best bit!

Damn, Lee! You've gotten so much better at guitar since I started watching in 2011
Great to see Lee become a more improved/confident player over the years.
scratch plate please.
Scratch plates and no scratch plates both look stunning. Peace and love.
I enjoy seeing Captain play in these new videos!
I just got the Tribute 50's HP...fantastic guitar, I love it. I got the honeyburst finish, And yes I took the scratch plate off!
Lee's playing compared to the earlier videos has come such a long way!
both, a scratch plate(epi bonnamassa goldtop burstbuckers 2/3)
no scratch plate (gibson 2013 LpJ 4904/498T) GREAT REVIEW
Chappers i want to buy one of your guitars.....
#TeamDontCareWhetherThereIsAScratchplateOrNotAllLesPaulsAreNice
Haha
Scratch plates are defiling to beautiful guitars. Take them all off and BUUUURRRNNN them!
But is the guitar beautiful when all the finish near the strings is gone?
s u c c IMO, yes. I see it as a good last touch.
#AllLesPaulLivesMatter
I have a 2012 50's tribute. I have to say I love it and have had no problems with it what so ever.
Lees soloing is the best!!!!!
wow i love it!!
Captain, I made the exact same noise when I heard the high performance LP bridge pickup through that Marshall! Nothing like it!

Scratch plates on solid bodies, none on archtops/hollow-bodies. And that's a no to mayo or beans on pizza. Another great review guys!
These both sound fantastic especially with those Marshall amps.
As far as pickguards/scratchates go, it depends on the guitar. Some Les Pauls look great without one, some look odd without one. I think it depends on it's color, binding or no binding & is it a carved top or a flat top Les Paul.
do the firebird PLEAASSEEE
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FIREBIRDS?! Really wanted to get your opinions on the difference between trad and hi-spec...
That vintage burst is beautiful!
08:45 - About the pickups in 498T and 490R.

pro scratch plate. Rock on Lee and Rob
Capt. gets better with every video
I like my scratchplate like my mayonnaise. I don't like mayonnaise.
+iFlare How would Les Paul sign your guitar? Fokn nailz n shit in ya skrat plat
How WOULD he sign it? He's dead.
+JonV Yeah lol
Took mine off my 2010 50s tribute gibson too
Pro-scratch plate, or "Pickguard" as we say here in the US.
I'm pro pickgaurd/scratchplate and i think having that on the guitar compliments it, whether its the color and/or style of the guitar ,it gives it an extra effect to the guitar itself
pro scratch plate every time. loving your playing Captain.
You guys are great! I love these videos. I'm team scratchplate (although, I am a Fender guy AND an American so we call those Pickguards)
I'm for the pick guard (scratch plates are fitted to Tele and Strat types). On flat tops like Strats, this is fine, but on arched/carved tops the strings are typically further from the surface, and the pick guard fills the gap. I agree they sometimes spoil the looks, but function beats form, always.
I like Rob's choices on this video! I like the 50s tone best. And I love the HP neck (tried it).
PRO Pickgaurd. Big time. Give me a nice cream pickgaurd and zero pinch harmonics all day long;-) Side note to Rob: Challenge to do and entire video with no pinch harmonics at all. Can you do it;-)
so happy to finally have a p90 les paul on here! the closest we've got is double cuts and juniors!
I'm with the no scratch plate team🤘😃🤘. Love you guys, keep,up the good work

that 60s with the p90s gives me a huge trouser-happy :3
Gibson Les Paul + Marshall Amp = Rock n Roll heaven.
Was eating pizza while watching this. Pizza with mayonaise. MUST TRY BAKED BEANS.
Also, anyone who takes their scratchplate off their lae paul, they clearly don't need their toes or ears either, so we'll just pull those off ^^
Maybe I don't fee so bad for hanging on to my 2015 standard now. Also, I think this is the best video of you both playing great together.
Really like the burst on that P90 LP but miss the binding. No scratch plate, please.
I always preferred em with the scratchplate, but I bought a standard where you have to drill the holes yourself if you want it to put it on. Not a hope i'm drilling holes into my LP standard for a bit of plastic. But now I quite like it without.
These edits are the greatest 😅😅
when they have a nice flamed top i prefer them without the scrathplate, but the most of the time i like les paul with them rather than without. Great video by the way
LP STUDIO FADED!!
Come on the scratchplate team!
I really hate that Yousician commercial.
it's so cringey. "yousician is the best way to learn guitar..." no it fucking isn't I don't need to hear this any more
Jamie MacMillan
You gotta' type it in ALL OF TEH CAPITALS! because the volume on that commercial is psychotically loud.
Tiny J good point
Absolutely on the non-scratchplate team. I've owned a few LPs and never keep the scratchplate!
