My father worked for Wal-Mart as a truck driver in the 90s. He is an old school trucker and quit there because of the atmosphere and the "elite" trucker attitude.
@@TheBostonTrucker The distribution center was in North Carolina and I think there was one in Virginia. He worked regionally but has been a truck driver for over 50 years. He is still driving a triaxle dump truck at 77 years old.
What a great story, BostonTrucker. In my early years OTR, I stayed away from the "warm-body-in-the-seat" carriers. And, there's where your Mack Ultraliner story "hits home". I hired-on with a small outfit out of Quincy, IL called Sharkey Transportation...much like Bud Meyer, family-run. Jack Sharkey, the owner, also had a Mack dealership in town, Quincy Mack. Naturally, his fleet was all-Mack, at the time mostly Ultraliners, with a few new CH's coming in. My first truck with them was an Ultraliner...loved the ride, but wasn't good enough for the few (and rare) long runs west to CA, where I lived at the time. Returning from CA one day, Jack could tell I wasn't too happy with the Ultraliner, so he offered me the one-and-only Superliner he had in the shop...a triple-dgit truck his only owner-operator turned-in after retiring! I grabbed it in a heartbeat, and the "rest was history". Out in Barstow at Rip Griffin's one day, I saw an ad for Roadshow Services, and left Sharkey for "show biz" trucking. Gotta tell ya this...I discovered your channel when a saw your 12-speed Mack (Superliner) video...went straight to my heart...still watch it now-and-then. Stay safe, Mike....thank you.
@@TheBostonTrucker You know, it's very possible you saw me in that truck back then...heading home (to CA), the TA in Ontario was (almost always) my last stop before the final push. Returning eastbound to "the big slab" (as we called it), I would always pay a visit to Rip Griffin's in Barstow. Great memories in an even greater truck...I made it mine. Have a neat story about getting the Superliner's rear end rebuilt by an expert old-timer in Gallup, NM when I broke down at the TA there...I'll save it for another time. Thanks, again...stay safe, Mike.
