    I used to tape the Agassi matches I was unable to watch live. I distinctly remember taping the 1989 Italian Open final between Agassi and Alberto Mancini. Got off work at 11 and went home to watch a great five setter. Didn't go to sleep till about 4AM.

    Agassi revealed one of the reasons for his success against Becker a few years ago. He said he'd noticed that when he was about to start his service motion, Becker would stick his tongue out at where he was going to serve. It really spooked Becker and he thought Agassi could read his mind.

    It is incredible that no one around Becker (especially his coach Gunther Bosch or his business manager Ion Tiriac) ever told Becker to stop sticking his tongue out when hitting a serve and thereby telegraphing which direction he was hitting the serve! After Agassi and Becker retired from pro tennis, they had dinner together one time and Agassi told Becker that that is why Agassi was so successful returning Becker's serve!

  • @michaelbarlow6610
    @michaelbarlow6610 5 месяцев назад +1

    @v4v819. It would not be the least bit surprising if Agassi did spot Becker accidentally giving away the direction he was planning to hit a serve because Becker DID extend his tongue out of his mouth as he hit a serve! So Agassi was probably being truthful in revealing that observation to Becker when they went out to dinner after Becker had retired from the men's pro tennis tour!

    About racquets evolution given that champ like Becker n' Agassi played whole career with metallic racquets each of 'em had been dealing with an historical change. Swerve from wooden racquets they learnt play with 4 a completely different type might have been shocking nonetheless these champions managed 2 do their best, each developing their own new style so was not unusual to see players with odd but creative techniques. That's what makes 80 n' 90's Tennis so unique I think n' I love it. Thanq ♤♡◇♧

    Becker won this match.
    It's footage from the 1988 Indian Wells tournament and pretty rare.
    Becker would then go on to beat Agassi again in a tough 5 setter in the 1989 Davis Cup and then a subsequent destruction of the 19 year old in a Round Robin match at that year's end at the Masters.
    So basically Becker handled Agassi from 1988 to 1989 when he was at his absolute prime and peak.
    Agassi was in his prime but not yet at his peak.
    Agassi then defeated Becker in the 1990 Indian Wells tourno and never looked back!

      The 80s and 90s served up(no pun intended!) several teenage first time grand slam winners(Wilander,Becker,Edberg and Sampras).
      Agassi could have joined them in 1988....but was stopped by Wilander at the French and Lendl at the US Open semi finals respectively.
      The above clip with Becker and Agassi highlights the difference between now and then.
      Edberg,Mac,Sampras and Becker did not hesitate to come to the net.
      It was instinctive.
      In contrast, the big 3 of the last 20 years are reluctant adventurers to the net at best.
      They have/had perfunctory skills when volleying with Fed being the most accomplished among these 3.
      But Fed never was a spontaneous serve and volleyer.
      That much is evident whether you watch footage from 1998(Fed's debut on the tour).....all the way through until his retirement in 2021.
      But as this clip shows......volleying is an art form as exemplified:
      @0.06
      And this instinctive calibre of volleying has not been seen on the men's tour since Sampras's retirement in 2002.

      It's true to a certain point......that Fed was serve and volleying in the 1999-2003-04 period.
      But he volleyed in the same manner that other baseliners like Borg,Connors,Wilander and Lendl serve and volleyed at Wimby.......which was to mix and match.
      Proof is in that very match between Fed and Sampras.
      Sampras came in behind both 1st and 2nd serves from the 1st point to the last in that contest.
      Fed on the other hand, stayed back on his 2nd serve......revealing his true baselining instincts.
      The real difference is that the elite baseliners of the previous generation(Lendl,Connors,Borg ,Wilander,Agassi,Chang) all faced the creme' de la creme of serve and volley talent on the grass at Wimby in the 1980-1999 period(namely- Mac,Becker,Edberg,Sampras and even Cash).
      Agassi was the one baseliner to win from said baseline, in 1992 at the all england club.
      Fed on the other hand, only had had Hewiit ,Roddick and Nadal(and later Djokovic and Murray) as his principal grass court opponents- all baseliners.
      That's the real difference.
      That one match with Pete(who was well past his best by 2001), was Fed's only experience of playing an elite serve and volleyer at Wimby(Henman and Phillpoussis don't count- not by a long shot).
      That's why Fed does not qualify for the GOAT in my view.....not because of his own undoubted abilities.......but because of the dearth of serve and volleying talent contesting him throughout the 2000s and beyond.

    I enjoy tennis more now that players don’t come to the net so much like they did years ago. If the players of old who used to come to the net a lot tried that against today’s power players, they would quickly learn to stop doing that.

    • @slevinarts
      @slevinarts Год назад +8

      A naïve comment - the technology has completely changed the game - the courts are slower on all surfaces, the new string technology gives such grip and traction for ultimate topspin (let alone the lessened pressure in the balls), it has actually become a slower game of power attrition from the back of the court - everyone plays the same game. This is why the big 3 have never been challenged, as no one is bringing anything new to the game. When players came to the net on faster surfaces time was taken away from the opponent - reaction time had to be faster. Completely different era but far less interesting today. Amazing athleticism today but the tennis has become boring.

      His hair had nothing to do with it.
      He was successful prior to cutting his hair winning Wimbledon in '92 and the U.S. Open in '94 when his hair was long, with the help of a glued-on hair piece...
      He went on to higher level beginning in 1995. He simply matured under good coaching
      It was finally his time.
      Hair....really?
      That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You are a very silly homo sapien.

    Yet Becker attacks Agassi more from the net in just this short 6 minute clip than Nadal or Federer did in several matches(against Agassi).
